WEBVTT 00:00.000 --> 00:02.880 I like to look at the evidence for the resurrection in four categories. 00:03.300 --> 00:06.060 The first one is, did Jesus die on the cross? 00:06.180 --> 00:06.920 Was he dead? 00:07.500 --> 00:12.220 Virtually every scholar on planet Earth can see that Jesus was dead after 00:12.220 --> 00:12.900 crucifixion. 00:12.960 --> 00:18.360 We have no record of anyone anywhere ever surviving a full Roman crucifixion. 00:18.880 --> 00:23.340 Even the Journal of the American Medical Association published a peer-reviewed 00:23.340 --> 00:27.620 scientific medical study of the evidence for the death of Jesus and said, 00:28.360 --> 00:32.180 clearly, the weight of the evidence indicates that Jesus was dead even before 00:32.180 --> 00:33.800 the wound to his side was inflicted. 00:34.200 --> 00:38.900 Even the atheist New Testament scholar, Gerd Ludeman, says historically it's 00:38.900 --> 00:41.160 indisputable that Jesus was dead. 00:41.220 --> 00:42.520 So Jesus was dead. 00:43.160 --> 00:47.700 The second category of evidence is the early accounts we have for the 00:47.700 --> 00:48.120 resurrection. 00:48.740 --> 00:52.180 In other words, I used to think as an atheist that the resurrection was a legend 00:52.180 --> 00:55.120 and that took a long time to develop in the ancient world. 00:55.620 --> 00:59.960 But what I learned is that we have preserved for us a creed of the earliest 00:59.960 --> 01:00.880 Christian church. 01:01.440 --> 01:06.000 A creed that is an eyewitness-based report of the resurrection of Jesus. 01:06.340 --> 01:11.200 Now this creed has been dated back by scholars to within months of the death of 01:11.200 --> 01:11.500 Jesus. 01:11.900 --> 01:12.520 Within months. 01:12.600 --> 01:14.380 That is historical gold. 01:14.580 --> 01:18.080 So we've got a newsflash from ancient history on the resurrection. 01:18.080 --> 01:20.460 Third category of evidence is the empty tomb. 01:21.020 --> 01:24.940 And the best evidence for that is even the opponents of Jesus implicitly admitted the 01:24.940 --> 01:25.540 tomb was empty. 01:26.040 --> 01:29.080 Because when the disciples began proclaiming that Jesus had risen, 01:29.200 --> 01:33.100 what the opponents said was, oh, well, the disciples stole the body. 01:33.800 --> 01:37.100 Now they're conceding the tomb's empty, they're just trying to explain how it got 01:37.100 --> 01:37.520 empty. 01:37.760 --> 01:39.740 So everybody's conceding the tomb was empty. 01:40.220 --> 01:42.400 How did it get empty is really the issue. 01:42.480 --> 01:45.800 And that goes to the fourth category of evidence, which is eyewitnesses. 01:46.500 --> 01:50.700 You know, for most of what we know about ancient history, it comes from one or 01:50.700 --> 01:52.440 maybe two sources of information. 01:53.260 --> 01:56.280 And yet for the conviction of the disciples that they encountered the 01:56.280 --> 02:02.800 resurrected Jesus, we have no fewer than nine ancient sources inside and outside 02:02.800 --> 02:06.900 the New Testament confirming and corroborating the conviction of the 02:06.900 --> 02:09.360 disciples that they encountered the risen Christ. 02:09.480 --> 02:12.580 That is an avalanche of historical data. 02:12.580 --> 02:16.520 So you put all that together and you have a really good case for Easter.
