WEBVTT 00:14.540 --> 00:18.020 Start with prayer, and I have just this little devotional that really struck me 00:18.020 --> 00:20.000 and I was going to open today with. 00:20.840 --> 00:21.900 Let's start with prayer. 00:23.280 --> 00:28.000 Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you, Lord, again for these examples of faith 00:28.000 --> 00:29.200 throughout the centuries. 00:30.100 --> 00:35.500 And dear God, once again we cry out, Lord, that you would put your Holy Spirit 00:35.500 --> 00:39.860 anew in the church today and to be able to rise up a generation today that would 00:39.860 --> 00:40.880 glorify your name. 00:41.560 --> 00:44.500 And Father, we want to do that today, so please let these examples, their 00:44.500 --> 00:47.360 mistakes, their successes, teach us lessons. 00:47.860 --> 00:50.480 In Jesus' name we pray, amen. 00:51.240 --> 00:52.220 Quick little devotion. 00:52.520 --> 00:57.340 I think it'll kind of make sense towards the end of this study as I hope to get to 00:57.340 --> 00:57.540 it. 00:58.160 --> 01:01.180 One of the first weeks here, I was going through this devotion, it's by East 01:01.180 --> 01:07.060 Stanley Jones, and he had this particular thing about history and tradition. 01:08.320 --> 01:13.700 And I thought it was a good subtle rebuke to me and I'll bring it to you as well. 01:14.520 --> 01:21.780 And I'll just cut in where he says here, he talks about this professor giving up 01:21.780 --> 01:25.120 Christianity and the professor says, I never consciously gave up a religious 01:25.120 --> 01:25.680 belief. 01:26.600 --> 01:31.420 It was as if I had put my belief into a drawer and when I came back to look for 01:31.420 --> 01:32.860 them, the drawer was empty. 01:33.580 --> 01:39.460 Then he says this, the thing has happened to this generation that happened to three 01:39.460 --> 01:43.040 generations of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 01:43.840 --> 01:49.580 Jacob could say, my eyes are getting a little bad these days, Jacob could say, 01:50.080 --> 01:55.360 my father's God, the God of Abraham, the awe of Isaac. 01:56.360 --> 02:02.700 So Jacob could say, my father's God, the God of Abraham, the awe of Isaac. 02:02.900 --> 02:05.300 That's in Genesis 31, a Moffat translation he used. 02:06.100 --> 02:09.060 God was God to Abraham. 02:10.380 --> 02:13.860 He had ventured forth with him as friend. 02:14.940 --> 02:17.740 He was intimate and firsthand and real. 02:18.460 --> 02:25.140 But in the next generation, God was not, quote, God of Isaac, but only the, 02:25.480 --> 02:27.340 quote, awe of Isaac. 02:27.980 --> 02:31.080 He had faded and become secondhand. 02:31.900 --> 02:35.940 Still, Isaac stood in awe of his father's God. 02:36.800 --> 02:41.660 In the third generation, in Jacob, the result of the gradual fading of God 02:41.660 --> 02:44.620 began to be shown in the decaying morals of Jacob. 02:45.260 --> 02:46.700 Moral rottenness appeared. 02:47.200 --> 02:49.020 He stole his brother's birthright. 02:49.820 --> 02:53.580 He was ready to take the main chance without regard to God. 02:54.260 --> 02:57.160 The same thing has happened with us. 02:58.320 --> 03:03.880 Our forefathers had a firsthand experience of God through revival. 03:04.660 --> 03:08.900 The next generation clung to the church for their father's sake. 03:09.460 --> 03:14.760 But God was only the awe, the afterglow of a fading faith. 03:14.760 --> 03:20.060 The third generation is reaping the results of a fading faith, which producing 03:20.060 --> 03:23.260 decaying morals and a decaying civilization. 03:23.780 --> 03:27.220 Our loss of God is working out in moral decay. 03:28.680 --> 03:32.920 We are going to pieces morally, for we have gone to pieces spiritually. 03:33.760 --> 03:37.400 We have lost God and have thus lost the basis of morals. 03:38.140 --> 03:46.480 Jacob then met God on Jebuch's bank in the midnight rustle and emerged a new man. 03:47.220 --> 03:52.660 Unless we, like Jacob, find a renewal in finding God. 03:55.920 --> 03:56.640 Amen, huh? 03:57.200 --> 04:00.840 So when we look at it, it's a good thing to talk about Jesus. 04:03.080 --> 04:07.840 And it's good to talk about people that talk about Jesus, and that's what history 04:07.840 --> 04:08.260 is. 04:08.760 --> 04:11.700 And it's good to talk about people that talk about people that talk about Jesus. 04:12.000 --> 04:17.780 But all in the center must still completely come to this becoming new and 04:17.780 --> 04:20.640 alive and Christ being alive within us in every generation. 04:21.400 --> 04:23.980 So it's just a rebuke I take to myself. 04:24.120 --> 04:29.180 I like history and I have to remind her that the target is not here, still the 04:29.180 --> 04:30.460 target is here. 04:30.980 --> 04:31.640 You see what I'm saying? 04:32.280 --> 04:34.520 All right, so let's get back to the Hutterites here. 04:34.600 --> 04:38.400 We're going to see some of that, how it works itself out in a movement as 04:38.400 --> 04:39.680 they go through time. 04:41.620 --> 04:44.160 By their own words they say these types of things. 04:44.360 --> 04:50.800 Okay, we picked it up and we ended yesterday with the statement of faith that 04:50.800 --> 04:54.440 we were looking at that comes into page 265 in Volume 1 of the Chronicles. 04:55.080 --> 05:00.260 And then we're going to go right in to now start watching some pretty hard years with 05:00.260 --> 05:01.900 what the Hutterites have gone through. 05:01.980 --> 05:03.340 You're thinking, well, I thought it was hard already. 05:03.900 --> 05:04.540 That's what I thought. 05:04.600 --> 05:07.120 When I get to the part of here that says the golden years, I think that's the 05:07.120 --> 05:07.640 golden years. 05:07.720 --> 05:09.200 I mean, people are still getting chopped up. 05:09.420 --> 05:12.420 So, I mean, you know, it's, I guess it's a matter of semantics here. 05:12.560 --> 05:17.620 But I'm going to take you through this and the whole point is to go on a journey with 05:17.620 --> 05:18.200 these people. 05:18.920 --> 05:23.320 One of the blessing things of the Hutterites was they kept these chronicles. 05:23.480 --> 05:24.920 I wish every group did this. 05:25.360 --> 05:27.080 So you can watch them as they go through. 05:27.200 --> 05:29.720 And one of the most impressive things about these chronicles is they're full of 05:29.720 --> 05:30.400 their mistakes. 05:30.760 --> 05:32.020 Well, this was a bad idea. 05:32.060 --> 05:32.520 We did this. 05:32.580 --> 05:33.960 This was dumb and that type of thing. 05:34.040 --> 05:35.680 And it's good to see that. 05:36.340 --> 05:39.940 And maybe then we can see a reflection of some of the mistakes that we made. 05:40.760 --> 05:46.240 But we have that fiery zeal, that missionary passion, that desire to follow 05:46.240 --> 05:46.800 Christ. 05:46.940 --> 05:50.720 And now we're going through and we're going to see how this works itself out. 05:51.420 --> 05:57.000 So in 1547 to 1553, you see there on page 11, we enter the second wave of 05:57.000 --> 05:57.760 persecution. 05:58.820 --> 06:03.760 In 1545, the king decided that unless we give up living in community, then we would 06:03.760 --> 06:05.440 be expelled from Moravia. 06:06.520 --> 06:08.900 And they mentioned this and they were struggling with it. 06:08.940 --> 06:09.540 Should we do this? 06:09.580 --> 06:10.360 It's getting so bad. 06:10.400 --> 06:11.480 I think we should just stop. 06:11.820 --> 06:14.960 And the king said, you can be in groups of five to seven people. 06:15.140 --> 06:18.080 Well, hardly our families could fit in five to seven people. 06:18.180 --> 06:21.680 It was an obvious thing just to divide up the Anabaptists that were there. 06:22.340 --> 06:27.020 And then when King Charles V came in, and this is a quote from the Chronicles, 06:27.060 --> 06:30.080 I thought it was funny, it was, out, out with us! 06:30.400 --> 06:32.240 And those exclamation points are that way. 06:32.880 --> 06:36.500 And so unfortunately all that we talked about yesterday with the development of 06:36.500 --> 06:40.360 those communities, all the work they had done, start over. 06:40.860 --> 06:42.400 And on the road again they went. 06:43.920 --> 06:45.180 It was a hard time. 06:45.720 --> 06:48.940 But I appreciate the spirit of prayer that I see coming out from these brethren. 06:49.580 --> 06:54.980 It says here on page 297 in the Chronicles, it says we called upon God and 06:54.980 --> 07:02.020 asked Him if His will was for us to remain together, to show us which way to go in 07:02.020 --> 07:07.600 our need and to care for those who trust in Him but are deserted by everyone else. 07:08.240 --> 07:12.060 The Lord in His mercy showed us a way out for we were accepted in Hungary. 07:12.060 --> 07:13.840 So they got a little chance. 07:14.820 --> 07:19.400 Remember we were talking about the Islamic invasion that was happening at this time. 07:19.740 --> 07:23.300 Already they were taking Hungary, Yugoslavia, and all these areas. 07:23.460 --> 07:28.260 And we are going to see many times through today that the brothers found easier time 07:28.260 --> 07:31.660 with the Islam than they did with the Reformers or with the Catholics, 07:31.780 --> 07:32.420 sad to say. 07:32.960 --> 07:36.380 And Hungary was already a place and still for a little gap they let them in. 07:36.720 --> 07:38.340 But the gap didn't last long. 07:39.040 --> 07:45.040 And while they were there, they quickly changed their mind. 07:45.140 --> 07:48.560 As soon as they got things built, they changed their mind and they started 07:48.560 --> 07:51.340 to have to kick them out. 07:51.780 --> 07:55.180 And it was some pretty bad times for them as well. 07:56.160 --> 08:01.540 Just a few thoughts here, how things were bad. 08:01.600 --> 08:03.660 This is page 302 in the first Chronicles. 08:03.780 --> 08:07.760 The first night they camped out in this particular area and they had no place to 08:07.760 --> 08:07.960 stay. 08:08.040 --> 08:10.160 They lived like animals and lived like in the wild. 08:10.280 --> 08:12.780 They were wondering what to do with themselves. 08:14.780 --> 08:19.520 In page 306 it went on to say that many of the believers then had to stay away from 08:19.520 --> 08:23.080 houses and flee into the woods and the mountains in the cold of the winter. 08:23.600 --> 08:26.940 It says they dug holes in the earth to live in like foxes. 08:27.660 --> 08:32.660 Hard such conditions were that they would have endured it all thankfully if only 08:32.660 --> 08:34.480 they would have been left alone. 08:34.580 --> 08:38.560 But even then when they were digging holes to stay in, even then the persecution kept 08:38.560 --> 08:38.880 going. 08:39.500 --> 08:44.540 When they gave them a certain amount of time, the Hungarians there actually built 08:44.540 --> 08:48.720 some gallows, you know what you hang people with, in front of their doors and 08:48.720 --> 08:52.800 said you have until such time to be out or you will be hanging from these gallows. 08:52.940 --> 08:56.200 And they could see from their attitudes they were meaning it. 08:56.960 --> 09:01.900 You went in here, there has even been found some of these areas living in holes. 09:02.340 --> 09:09.160 And here is an area in Moravia where they have done some found these places. 09:10.120 --> 09:15.220 And these Hutterites actually built like caves in places where they could hide from 09:15.220 --> 09:16.780 this terrible time of persecution. 09:17.820 --> 09:21.700 And we are going to start with the handout from yesterday, page 11 everyone. 09:22.480 --> 09:26.040 And it says this would have been okay, okay we had to dig this by hand, 09:26.140 --> 09:27.840 we were living like animals. 09:27.960 --> 09:32.860 But even then in puppets, which is this, where believers were living in holes 09:32.860 --> 09:38.300 underground, some godless men built a fire at the entrance and tried to suffocate 09:38.950 --> 09:40.320 them and smoke them out. 09:40.680 --> 09:42.240 But they were stopped and driven away. 09:42.720 --> 09:47.300 Thieving gangs would chase believers out of thickets and woods and force them to 09:47.300 --> 09:47.800 move on. 09:48.200 --> 09:52.980 Around the Mayburg many lived with the children in holes among the bushes for a 09:52.980 --> 09:53.260 time. 09:53.960 --> 09:58.400 They had also lived in the rocky crevices of caves and cliffs in Moravia and 09:58.400 --> 09:59.300 wherever they could find. 10:00.020 --> 10:04.280 They had a little house still left in Hungary that had 250 children living in 10:04.280 --> 10:07.040 one house as well as sick and the old, lame and the blind. 10:07.500 --> 10:10.800 The brothers in this area supplied them with food, sending them bread and keeping 10:11.490 --> 10:12.540 up with brotherly love. 10:12.700 --> 10:18.560 And they were just hanging on for survival now as they got kicked out of this 10:18.560 --> 10:19.320 particular area. 10:20.180 --> 10:21.840 And it was hard times. 10:23.140 --> 10:27.300 I have here the year 1546 was a difficult time for the Hutterites indeed. 10:27.860 --> 10:29.860 King Ferdinand made a visit to Moravia. 10:30.240 --> 10:30.780 Remember him? 10:30.820 --> 10:32.820 He was the guy that I drew the picture of. 10:35.080 --> 10:37.400 My children really make fun of my artwork. 10:38.280 --> 10:39.000 So he was mad. 10:39.080 --> 10:44.820 He is the guy, he has a lot of... he is not a nice guy. 10:45.140 --> 10:49.240 So Ferdinand made a visit to Moravia and put the brethren in danger and so the 10:49.240 --> 10:53.160 Hutterites fled to the mountains and all these different things began to happen. 10:54.100 --> 10:59.380 And then around 1554 to 1564 was a good period. 11:00.400 --> 11:02.640 You need a little 10 years of rest every now and then. 11:04.340 --> 11:05.300 Poor guys. 11:05.920 --> 11:09.160 After the Hutterites survived persecution and suffering the Golden Period which 11:09.160 --> 11:14.780 lasted again even more so from 1565 then to 1592. 11:15.420 --> 11:17.740 And during this time the community grew rapidly. 11:18.300 --> 11:24.240 And by 1621 there were over 102 communities with a total population of 11:24.240 --> 11:26.920 20,000 to 30,000. 11:27.680 --> 11:28.880 Some little differences. 11:29.160 --> 11:30.420 The king got distracted. 11:30.560 --> 11:31.040 I don't know. 11:31.200 --> 11:34.960 Perhaps, remember there is still this entire Islamic invasion that is 11:34.960 --> 11:37.920 threatening Austria and threatening all these different things. 11:38.120 --> 11:42.580 And at times the kings would be distracted with different things and it was a good 11:42.580 --> 11:43.100 time for them. 11:43.160 --> 11:44.900 And apparently this was one of those. 11:45.440 --> 11:48.880 During that time the members of the colonies were engaged with a variety of 11:48.880 --> 11:50.400 different economic activities. 11:51.120 --> 11:52.340 And this was impressive times. 11:52.980 --> 11:56.540 You see the industry of the Anabaptists starting to pour out in these brethren. 11:57.000 --> 12:01.160 Some of them included wagon making, cutlery, leather working, nursing. 12:01.560 --> 12:02.500 They became doctors. 12:03.680 --> 12:06.940 They actually became some of the most famous doctors in Europe at that time. 12:07.800 --> 12:10.940 Shoemaking, pottery making, watchmaking, and weaving. 12:11.460 --> 12:15.620 There were also barbers, surgeons, and coppersmiths, tinsmiths, locksmiths. 12:15.840 --> 12:20.160 Because their reputation is hard working, they were hired by many of the lords in 12:20.160 --> 12:21.620 Moravia and Slovakia. 12:22.200 --> 12:26.020 And so they would get the brothers to come to their castle and they would help work 12:26.020 --> 12:26.940 this or work that. 12:27.280 --> 12:32.220 One of the things that I find impressive with them, it's the same thing I see with 12:32.220 --> 12:36.960 the Zinzendorf brothers there in Bethlehem and Hernhut, was to have these kind of 12:36.960 --> 12:44.300 trades and then still have all these trades be used for the propagating of the 12:44.300 --> 12:45.140 kingdom of God. 12:46.320 --> 12:48.240 That's a big temptation in and of itself. 12:48.600 --> 12:51.580 You understand, it's one thing when you're starving to death, you have no money, 12:51.800 --> 12:55.540 you're hungry, and you're dying, and oh great, we can all live together in 12:55.540 --> 12:56.060 community. 12:56.180 --> 12:57.560 It's kind of a not so bad thing. 12:58.000 --> 13:02.000 When it raised to the point where they were able to raise to this kind of level, 13:02.300 --> 13:06.260 I think it's even more impressive to something that they were trying to uphold. 13:08.040 --> 13:11.860 It's during this time that the Hutterites established their first kindergartens and 13:11.860 --> 13:13.240 started to educate the children. 13:13.780 --> 13:17.960 In this day, the education of children in Germany and this area, Moravian area, 13:18.140 --> 13:20.540 was pretty pathetic in a lot of places. 13:20.960 --> 13:24.340 And so they started to have schools and a lot of the lords and things would actually 13:24.340 --> 13:27.840 have their children go to the school with the Hutterites and they would begin to 13:27.840 --> 13:29.440 train them and begin to educate them. 13:29.540 --> 13:34.680 They felt it was very important that the children learn to read and learn to be 13:34.680 --> 13:39.300 able to study the faith, kind of like the Hebrews did in earlier times. 13:39.940 --> 13:42.080 And it was very successful for them. 13:42.580 --> 13:50.880 And it is at this time that Caspar Brachmichael began to put together this 13:50.880 --> 13:51.460 chronicle. 13:51.600 --> 13:57.280 And here are some of the handwritten copies that I took some pictures of here. 13:59.060 --> 14:03.720 I don't know if it do me any... oh yeah, at least I know what the 26 says. 14:05.460 --> 14:10.500 And so they gathered up a lot of the different papers, a lot of the different 14:10.500 --> 14:13.440 documents, and began to put this thing together. 14:13.580 --> 14:17.100 And these books are Anabaptist masterpieces. 14:17.200 --> 14:21.160 They're historical masterpieces because they read like in journal fashion. 14:21.360 --> 14:23.780 And that's what makes it fun as a historian to teach a history class on the 14:23.780 --> 14:25.720 Hutterites because you follow them through. 14:25.840 --> 14:28.240 It's just like this happened, that happened, this happened. 14:28.780 --> 14:34.820 And to have a record of a people like that that goes through time is really an 14:34.820 --> 14:37.240 incredible gift that we have today. 14:38.060 --> 14:39.560 And so they had that here. 14:39.620 --> 14:40.780 And here's some of the original documents. 14:41.780 --> 14:46.240 They kept transcribing these and through the ages. 14:46.740 --> 14:52.400 So I've been told... I was reading one little book on the Hutterites and this 14:52.400 --> 14:52.840 person... 14:52.840 --> 15:00.180 I think that this, the first volume, is the copy, the leftover handwritten copy 15:00.180 --> 15:06.180 of this, according to this one book that I read, he said was under the bed in a 15:06.180 --> 15:10.580 wooden box under the bishop's bed in Bonhomme community in South Dakota. 15:11.540 --> 15:13.440 I just think that's so funny. 15:13.540 --> 15:16.120 I would love to be able to see this box or something. 15:16.220 --> 15:17.860 I don't know if by now NC's written that book. 15:17.940 --> 15:18.860 They have it somewhere else. 15:19.040 --> 15:21.580 But it's been handed down, handed down, handed down. 15:22.220 --> 15:27.720 And it is really a treasure we have for all of our history in looking at what 15:27.720 --> 15:28.400 they've done here. 15:30.140 --> 15:32.480 Another thing I'll just say real quick about these. 15:32.580 --> 15:34.380 I mentioned it just a little bit earlier already. 15:35.520 --> 15:37.460 I appreciate the honest history. 15:38.580 --> 15:42.900 It's kind of like even when you're writing the Bible, if you were writing the Bible, 15:43.020 --> 15:46.360 would you have given the David story with Bathsheba? 15:46.620 --> 15:48.540 Would you have told the stories? 15:49.160 --> 15:52.140 Would you have mentioned that Peter denied the faith? 15:52.260 --> 15:54.300 Maybe you'd have left that out and cleaned it up a little bit. 15:54.720 --> 15:57.980 But wouldn't you agree we'd all have been very sad if that would have happened? 15:58.400 --> 15:59.400 Same with these chronicles. 15:59.880 --> 16:03.000 It's hard to believe that they just kept transcribing all these things when some of 16:03.000 --> 16:06.620 them were like ten pages of this was a disastrous mistake. 16:06.720 --> 16:07.980 I can't believe the elder did that. 16:08.080 --> 16:09.880 And it went on and it went on like that. 16:10.360 --> 16:11.980 But they still pass it down. 16:12.360 --> 16:15.660 And if I get to there, I'll read you some quotes where they actually say why they 16:15.660 --> 16:18.160 pass it down so future generations can learn lessons. 16:18.840 --> 16:21.860 So I think it's good for us all to be honest with our history. 16:22.360 --> 16:24.160 I think that's really good for us. 16:24.940 --> 16:29.040 Okay, so then during the golden period, the brethren were very well organized and 16:29.040 --> 16:33.100 prosperous and mission work was carried out more than ever before. 16:33.900 --> 16:39.640 And if I could say a rebuke to us in our time of prosperity, you know, we think 16:39.640 --> 16:42.460 well during persecution times you have nothing else to do, you might as well go 16:42.460 --> 16:43.180 in the mission field. 16:43.480 --> 16:48.320 But here during their time of prosperity, they organized and still went into 16:48.320 --> 16:48.740 missions. 16:50.800 --> 16:52.040 Let me read you some of these. 17:00.580 --> 17:08.780 Okay... 352... 352... I'll read you some of this. 17:11.240 --> 17:12.280 Just a little glance. 17:12.380 --> 17:17.700 My goal here today is just to give you a flavor as you walk through this people and 17:17.700 --> 17:21.920 walk with them on their journey through the centuries here and see things that 17:21.920 --> 17:22.380 they had. 17:23.140 --> 17:27.660 So during this time, page 352 in volume 1, they traveled with joy and fear of God 17:27.660 --> 17:33.040 again and again praising Him who leads into prison and out again. 17:33.540 --> 17:38.080 They put their trust in the Lord and after they reached the Rhine, they carried on 17:38.080 --> 17:40.580 their task of obedience to their mission from the church. 17:40.580 --> 17:43.780 They returned joyfully to the church community with a good conscience. 17:43.980 --> 17:47.480 Just something said in there about the missionaries there. 17:47.560 --> 17:52.580 And 355, another one, so that they lay down again and returned to the prison on 17:52.580 --> 17:56.360 Sunday when the city governor came to the two priests who questioned him about his 17:56.360 --> 17:56.720 mission. 17:57.260 --> 18:03.360 He told them he himself had not chosen to do this task, he didn't choose to be a 18:03.360 --> 18:08.700 missionary, but had been appointed by God and His Spirit in His church. 18:09.140 --> 18:15.100 Just as God sent His Son and as the Son sent His Apostles into all the world, 18:15.500 --> 18:20.720 so He still sends out His servants through His Spirit, first of all to preach the 18:20.720 --> 18:25.040 Word of God, then they are to baptize, not infants and young children, 18:25.440 --> 18:28.440 but those who hear, understand and believe. 18:29.120 --> 18:33.320 Again, that's when they were in prison and being challenged about their missionary 18:33.320 --> 18:34.020 activity. 18:36.060 --> 18:41.900 Another real quick one here, another missionary again being asked questions. 18:45.600 --> 18:48.700 This is the good time, this is what I think is funny, they are still in prison, 18:48.820 --> 18:50.220 they are still getting killed and everything. 18:50.780 --> 18:57.700 357, five times the executioner came ready to execute them, but the council could not 18:57.700 --> 18:58.400 reach a verdict. 18:58.520 --> 19:03.520 Here's one of these particular men here, and they had in mind to execute first Hans 19:03.520 --> 19:08.800 Schmidt and the other Heinrich Adams because these two had opposed them the 19:08.800 --> 19:13.520 most and they hoped that they would shake the others when Hans heard that he was 19:13.520 --> 19:17.160 going to die, but he sang for joy, he sang for joy. 19:17.740 --> 19:20.560 This is one of the missionaries that were sent out, that's why I mention him here. 19:20.920 --> 19:24.080 But it's interesting when they were trying to decide what do we do with them, 19:24.140 --> 19:27.480 do we kill them or not, and here is an attitude that comes out from him, 19:27.700 --> 19:28.960 and it's a beautiful quote. 19:30.880 --> 19:34.980 The date of the execution, Hans Schmidt and Heinrich Adams was sent for on August 19:34.980 --> 19:35.760 13th. 19:36.560 --> 19:39.040 And then they told him what was going to happen to them. 19:39.140 --> 19:44.320 Some felt sympathy for them and had sent them food and drink from time to time, 19:44.600 --> 19:47.360 now came to offer their hand to Hans. 19:47.480 --> 19:49.140 He shook hands and smiled at them. 19:49.660 --> 19:53.940 And even when he had walked through the crowd in the square, there had been a 19:53.940 --> 19:55.140 smile on his lips. 19:55.660 --> 20:00.300 People had swarmed about him to the left and to the right and front and behind as 20:00.300 --> 20:05.020 he was being taken before the court, which made him exclaim. 20:05.100 --> 20:09.160 So everybody started showing up and he said, what a wonderful wedding I am having 20:09.160 --> 20:11.500 with so many people coming to my attending. 20:12.880 --> 20:17.540 And again, they seem to talk about this quite often about seeing their martyrdom 20:17.540 --> 20:19.340 as called their wedding day. 20:20.520 --> 20:25.180 One of the particular ones that caught my attention was a brother who was, 20:25.700 --> 20:27.660 you'll see this one in the martyr's mirror as well. 20:28.320 --> 20:30.740 And the Chronicles, it's on page 343. 20:32.020 --> 20:42.320 And this brother was again arrested and as he was arrested, the judge told him that 20:42.320 --> 20:47.020 an order had come from Innsbruck demanding the names of the leaders who sent brothers 20:47.020 --> 20:50.780 out on missions and of those who gave them food and shelter. 20:50.940 --> 20:54.040 And he answered, we are not sent out to harm anyone. 20:54.320 --> 21:01.240 Our mission is the salvation of men, to call them to repent and change their 21:01.240 --> 21:01.800 lives. 21:02.020 --> 21:05.180 But this last question he added was not about the Articles of Faith. 21:05.420 --> 21:08.360 They did not need to know and he would not tell them. 21:08.680 --> 21:09.680 So he wasn't going to tell them. 21:10.720 --> 21:13.820 They would let the people know the Articles of Faith, but there were some 21:13.820 --> 21:17.420 things, it's kind of like name and serial number that the army people gave. 21:17.500 --> 21:20.100 They would say, if they ask you Articles of Faith, they would talk to them. 21:20.140 --> 21:23.160 But if they ask you other things, like who sends people on missionaries, 21:23.200 --> 21:23.600 where do you go? 21:23.660 --> 21:25.540 He said, that we don't have to answer. 21:25.920 --> 21:31.680 So they finally put this guy in prison, stuck him in a terrible hole, a rotten 21:31.680 --> 21:32.060 hole. 21:32.160 --> 21:33.280 I mean, it's just disgusting. 21:33.440 --> 21:37.560 They go through some details here and they leave him down there to rot so long. 21:37.600 --> 21:39.140 I don't know if you remember this story from the martyr's mirror. 21:39.780 --> 21:45.760 They begin him to rot so long that he goes through this little journal writings here 21:45.760 --> 21:46.740 where they gave him food. 21:46.860 --> 21:49.660 He had to quickly eat his food before the rats would get it. 21:49.820 --> 21:54.120 And then he had to put a rock on the bowl so that they wouldn't drink his water. 21:54.840 --> 21:59.280 And he was there and began to see his feet were rotting and he was noticing that. 21:59.620 --> 22:02.480 And then the brothers actually got a letter to him and saying, can you give us 22:02.480 --> 22:05.420 some sign that you're alive? 22:06.380 --> 22:08.600 How about a straw from your bed? 22:09.260 --> 22:12.100 And so he looked around and he didn't even have a straw from his bed. 22:12.460 --> 22:17.600 So he looked around and what he had done was all his clothes had rotted except to 22:17.600 --> 22:20.800 this collar that was all that was left was a collar. 22:21.420 --> 22:25.300 And he had that collar hanging up on some little nail or something. 22:25.700 --> 22:29.280 His shirt had rotted away until not a thread remained except the collar that was 22:29.280 --> 22:32.380 around his neck, which finally hung on the wall. 22:33.420 --> 22:40.620 And so as he thought about what to send them, he said he got word of them asking 22:40.620 --> 22:43.400 to send him some sign that he was still faithful to God and the church. 22:43.500 --> 22:44.260 He had nothing else. 22:44.540 --> 22:46.680 He just sent him a little piece of straw. 22:46.880 --> 22:51.220 But Hans Karl would gladly have done so, but he did not even have so much as a 22:51.220 --> 22:52.740 bundle of straw in the dungeon. 22:53.260 --> 22:54.580 That is how poor he was. 22:55.020 --> 23:01.620 And then so he sent him this collar and he said, so he let them know that they should 23:01.620 --> 23:02.640 not send him anything. 23:02.920 --> 23:06.300 He must clothe himself with the garment of patience. 23:07.220 --> 23:09.580 And he considered that a garment of patience because they said we will send 23:09.580 --> 23:10.240 you clothes or something. 23:10.440 --> 23:14.580 He said he is persevering in the Lord this way, but he wanted them to know that he 23:14.580 --> 23:16.260 was very serious. 23:16.540 --> 23:17.720 He was very serious indeed. 23:18.740 --> 23:23.160 And so they went on with these different things. 23:25.260 --> 23:26.260 And these were the good times. 23:32.930 --> 23:36.210 Do you remember the story that I was reading you by Harold S. 23:36.290 --> 23:43.010 Bender where the man was saying, I will never again execute another 23:43.010 --> 23:44.470 Anabaptist? 23:44.710 --> 23:45.570 He was a Hutterite. 23:45.650 --> 23:49.530 It is on page 429 in the Chronicles, but there is a little more detail that 23:49.530 --> 23:51.930 comes out here in the Chronicles I wanted to show you. 23:53.710 --> 24:09.170 Why it made it so graphic was as he was going to... as he was going to kill this 24:09.170 --> 24:14.950 man, the blade apparently was not all that sharp, unfortunately. 24:15.430 --> 24:17.810 The executioner had great difficulty beheading him. 24:18.230 --> 24:20.270 He just could not strike accurately. 24:20.970 --> 24:24.150 He had to finish cutting off the brother's head on the ground the best he could. 24:24.450 --> 24:27.530 He was afraid of his own life and was endangered by the mob. 24:27.870 --> 24:32.070 The experience made him say later that he would never execute another brother as 24:32.070 --> 24:33.210 long as he lived. 24:33.550 --> 24:37.350 It later says that this man, he said he went insane and had to be chained up, 24:37.570 --> 24:39.170 the leader there. 24:39.970 --> 24:46.050 And so it was some serious hard times, even during the good times, of what they 24:46.050 --> 24:46.570 had there. 24:46.850 --> 24:50.250 So again, we are just watching them go through. 24:50.830 --> 24:53.070 They did have some mission frustrations. 24:54.330 --> 24:55.690 Not everything came through. 24:56.230 --> 25:06.390 In 430, as they were sending some people out in 430 of the Chronicles, in 1571, 25:07.090 --> 25:10.810 a servant of God's word and several other brothers were sent to Tyrol. 25:10.930 --> 25:14.250 Remember that's where Hutter came from and Blaurock ended up. 25:14.410 --> 25:16.650 It was a good place to send out missionaries. 25:17.770 --> 25:21.790 The church sent them to look for people who longed for God's truth. 25:22.330 --> 25:27.950 People who were repenting for their sins and desiring to seal their surrender to 25:27.950 --> 25:30.410 God with the covenant of grace. 25:30.990 --> 25:32.450 And that was their commission to go out. 25:32.590 --> 25:33.370 Nice commission, huh? 25:33.850 --> 25:36.950 But when they got there, it didn't go that well. 25:37.330 --> 25:41.330 They went back to Pustre Valley, which is where we remember that Jacob 25:41.330 --> 25:44.610 Hutter was from, looking for different people. 25:44.810 --> 25:49.110 Then he met him on the road, okay, heading back for this place. 25:49.230 --> 25:54.210 Okay, they felt that they had traveled so far and met so few people interested in 25:54.210 --> 25:58.690 the truth that they had lost all hope of finding anyone who was ready to be 25:58.690 --> 26:00.550 obedient and surrender to the truth. 26:00.910 --> 26:04.350 So they had decided to leave that area rather than spend their money for nothing. 26:04.930 --> 26:07.910 Again, I just thought that was an interesting little note that shows that 26:07.910 --> 26:10.630 not all these mission activities were great successes. 26:10.850 --> 26:14.030 They got to a point sometimes and said, well, no one is even interested in the 26:14.030 --> 26:14.610 gospel here. 26:14.850 --> 26:16.290 So, you know, that's your brother. 26:17.450 --> 26:21.430 So let's not get disheartened when we get into situations like that. 26:23.830 --> 26:28.290 One of the particular ones that I wanted to read to you was when they got into one 26:28.290 --> 26:30.270 area and they were arrested by the Lutherans. 26:30.750 --> 26:36.430 And there's an interesting little dialogue that goes in between the difference 26:36.430 --> 26:40.530 between the Anabaptists and the Lutherans there as they are talking about it. 26:40.790 --> 26:43.610 And that's what I have here on page 451. 26:51.480 --> 26:59.300 Okay, this is interesting because the point that I want to take from this is 26:59.300 --> 27:07.120 that the Anabaptists then, and I believe a true concept of Anabaptism today is the 27:07.120 --> 27:08.640 concept of a visible church. 27:09.800 --> 27:15.380 Remember they had the parish idea and they said, well, the church is invisible. 27:15.620 --> 27:16.480 They said, that's ridiculous. 27:16.600 --> 27:17.460 Yes, true indeed. 27:17.580 --> 27:19.660 Only God knows who are His children. 27:19.820 --> 27:23.980 But He does desire, remember the whole concept of the Incarnation, Christ is both 27:23.980 --> 27:25.460 spirit and His flesh. 27:25.740 --> 27:28.860 And so He does have a physical people. 27:29.720 --> 27:34.820 So there's an interesting passage here where they get arrested by the Lutherans. 27:37.560 --> 27:39.200 And I'm going to read it to you here. 27:39.340 --> 27:44.560 Okay, so as they begin to talk with them, the two ministers said that the church... 27:46.700 --> 27:55.220 okay, let's see where to get in here because there's some interesting passages. 27:58.020 --> 27:58.460 Okay, 28:03.560 --> 28:12.710 so they were talking first about things like faith and works and they were saying 28:12.710 --> 28:13.230 something here. 28:13.370 --> 28:18.150 Finally, he said, talking about, he says, yet they are powerless when faced 28:18.150 --> 28:19.630 with the Word of God and the pure truth. 28:19.730 --> 28:22.910 No Hebrew, Greek, Latin, in short, no kind of learning will help. 28:23.310 --> 28:27.410 And finally, these priests at Salzburg openly admitted to these different 28:27.410 --> 28:32.270 brothers that the Turks were also devout, maybe more devout than they, but it depend 28:32.270 --> 28:35.570 on what each person believed, which is what was the reality of their life, 28:35.630 --> 28:37.150 not what was true in their life. 28:37.210 --> 28:40.570 And they began to get into this argument on, yes, it matters what you believe, 28:40.670 --> 28:43.110 but it also must be a true change in their life. 28:44.570 --> 28:48.090 At first, so they went on and started getting into more trouble with these guys. 28:48.190 --> 28:51.710 And it says, at first he was cruelly tortured and many attempts to win him over 28:51.710 --> 28:54.510 made by the magistrates, nobles, and commoners, learned doctors, 28:54.570 --> 28:55.410 and Lutheran ministers. 28:55.910 --> 29:00.610 In 1556, his cell was left unlocked for a full six months with just this word, 29:01.610 --> 29:02.830 okay, say you won't leave. 29:04.070 --> 29:07.190 Now, when they were able to escape, they had free conscience and they left, 29:07.310 --> 29:09.450 but the Lutherans said, say you won't leave. 29:09.870 --> 29:10.990 So they said, okay, we won't leave. 29:11.150 --> 29:14.190 And they were there with the gates open for six months and they just stayed there 29:14.190 --> 29:14.610 in prison. 29:15.270 --> 29:18.270 And finally, they, I guess maybe they hoped they would leave, but finally they 29:18.270 --> 29:21.150 said, okay, we will let you leave. 29:21.850 --> 29:26.270 If you just do one thing, just say that we, or I'll give you right from the quote, 29:31.280 --> 29:35.040 talking about as Paul was still firm in the faith, refusing to admit that 29:35.040 --> 29:37.280 magistrates, the sword or war were Christians. 29:37.640 --> 29:42.000 These warmongers said that they did not want him to associate with other people 29:42.000 --> 29:46.120 and that here it is, and that they would keep him in prison until he died or 29:46.120 --> 29:48.080 admitted that they were good Christians. 29:49.280 --> 29:54.700 All you have to do now, just say that we're Christians, just say that we're two 29:54.700 --> 29:56.980 good Christians and we'll let you go. 29:57.320 --> 29:58.740 And they wouldn't do it. 29:58.880 --> 30:00.740 Finally, this brother got sick in prison. 30:00.880 --> 30:01.840 He was about to die. 30:03.060 --> 30:06.160 And, and so they, when they were about to die, they got some people to come up here 30:06.160 --> 30:06.960 and talk to them. 30:07.380 --> 30:13.740 And, and he said to him, since God has struck him down with disease, now is the 30:13.740 --> 30:14.220 time. 30:14.500 --> 30:18.540 They sent two ministers to question him on infant baptism in the Eucharist and to win 30:18.540 --> 30:19.520 him over to their beliefs. 30:19.900 --> 30:23.780 And Paul answered this, listen, I'll join your church into this 30:23.780 --> 30:24.260 circumstance. 30:24.560 --> 30:28.660 It's a beautiful thing that he gets into here about the visible church. 30:28.820 --> 30:29.600 Don't miss this. 30:30.440 --> 30:37.020 He says, if you can show me one little flock of Christ, that is a fruit of your 30:37.020 --> 30:42.180 preaching, I will join them and I will lay down whatever is against God in me and 30:42.180 --> 30:43.200 accept what is better. 30:43.720 --> 30:44.260 Ouch. 30:45.740 --> 30:50.360 Oh, the two ministers said, well, that a Christian church is not something 30:50.360 --> 30:51.280 visible. 30:52.020 --> 30:54.100 You cannot point to it. 30:55.080 --> 30:56.960 And brother Paul said, remember he's sick. 30:57.980 --> 31:00.200 This shows what false prophets you are. 31:00.820 --> 31:04.960 For Christ pointed to his church and to his disciples when he stretched forth his 31:04.960 --> 31:08.020 hand toward them and said, here are my mother and my brothers. 31:08.460 --> 31:12.260 Whoever does the will of my father in heaven is my mother, my brother, 31:12.360 --> 31:13.000 and my sisters. 31:13.140 --> 31:16.220 He also said, you are to be the light of the world. 31:16.480 --> 31:21.120 A city set on a hill cannot be hidden and further love one another as I have loved 31:21.120 --> 31:24.020 you that all may recognize you as true disciples. 31:24.560 --> 31:29.020 And Peter says, lead such good lives among the heathen that they may be one without 31:29.020 --> 31:29.700 words. 31:30.080 --> 31:33.240 And he clearly points to the Christian church when he says to his brothers, 31:33.240 --> 31:40.160 you are a chosen race, the royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own 31:40.160 --> 31:40.720 people. 31:41.040 --> 31:42.040 Paul says the same. 31:42.240 --> 31:46.220 You are the temple of the living God and you are a seal of my apostleship to the 31:46.220 --> 31:46.520 Lord. 31:47.000 --> 31:49.420 You false serpents. 31:50.600 --> 31:53.860 He continued, look how God points to his church. 31:54.240 --> 31:58.440 But as you cannot do it, you are still children of darkness, not members of the 31:58.440 --> 31:59.200 body of Christ. 31:59.300 --> 32:02.640 If you were members, you would also be able to point to a body. 32:03.060 --> 32:07.920 Am I to submit myself to you so that you can make me a Christian when you have not 32:07.920 --> 32:10.640 made a single Christian in your church? 32:11.560 --> 32:14.680 You are like the 400 false prophets of Ahab. 32:14.860 --> 32:18.980 Just as with them, a false spirit speaks out of your lying words to mislead the 32:18.980 --> 32:19.680 whole world. 32:20.160 --> 32:20.820 And he goes on. 32:22.040 --> 32:25.080 He didn't win friends and influence people that way, but they made their point. 32:25.240 --> 32:25.780 You know what I mean? 32:27.420 --> 32:32.280 And I thought that he goes on in that concept there of talking about the idea of 32:32.280 --> 32:32.960 a visible church. 32:33.060 --> 32:34.120 And I think it's a good point. 32:34.180 --> 32:38.120 It's a good point in all the idea of, I believe, early Christianity and 32:38.120 --> 32:40.540 Anabaptist Christianity in that way. 32:43.950 --> 32:47.390 Okay, the golden period was over. 32:47.890 --> 32:50.170 And now we start to get into the Turkish wars. 32:50.550 --> 32:53.850 The Turkish wars are the buildup, not quite the 30 year war, but now we have 32:53.850 --> 32:57.070 the Islamic invasion, the Jihad against Austria. 32:57.150 --> 33:00.350 And they're starting to come up on the side here. 33:00.810 --> 33:03.770 And the golden period of the Hutterites ended with the start of the Turkish war, 33:03.890 --> 33:05.730 which was fought against the Roman Empire. 33:06.390 --> 33:10.710 During the war, armies from both sides would come to the communities in search of 33:10.710 --> 33:11.470 food and shelter. 33:11.630 --> 33:15.250 The Turks, who killed and captured many of the members, frequently raided the 33:15.250 --> 33:15.690 colonies. 33:17.330 --> 33:22.130 And to get money for the Turks, emperors told all the lords to contribute 33:22.130 --> 33:23.130 taxes and monies. 33:23.250 --> 33:26.170 And the Hutterites had a problem with paying war taxes. 33:27.030 --> 33:31.110 So sheep, cattle, wagons, and many other possessions were stolen instead. 33:31.750 --> 33:34.830 For 13 years, the colonies were raided and the Hutterites were killed. 33:35.150 --> 33:36.690 They took refugees and passages. 33:37.290 --> 33:40.030 They hid again in passages and caves again. 33:40.430 --> 33:43.130 When the war ended, the brethren tried to rebuild what they had left. 33:43.190 --> 33:50.430 But the time they did, as soon as they did, it was starting to be the 30-year 33:50.430 --> 33:50.850 war. 33:51.610 --> 33:56.690 I have here, it's mentioned here, this brother talks about this time period. 33:57.350 --> 34:03.950 He says in page 403, As usual, wherever possible, the tribe of priests 34:03.950 --> 34:06.730 keep stirring up the powers that be. 34:07.470 --> 34:09.930 But the Lord our God stood in the way. 34:10.530 --> 34:15.550 The archangel Michael stood watch over his people, otherwise they would long since 34:15.550 --> 34:17.850 have been swallowed up and devoured like bread. 34:18.570 --> 34:23.770 But as a hen gathers her young under her wings, protecting them by pecking at all 34:23.770 --> 34:29.510 that want to attack her own, indeed, as an angel hovers over its young, 34:29.690 --> 34:32.930 this and much more God did for the sake of his people. 34:33.190 --> 34:36.750 Even the unbelievers often had to acknowledge that God refused to let his 34:36.750 --> 34:38.850 people be driven away and annihilated. 34:39.370 --> 34:43.050 They lived in the land God had provided, especially for them. 34:43.430 --> 34:47.970 They were given the wings of a great eagle and flew to the place God had prepared for 34:47.970 --> 34:51.510 them, and they were sustained there as long as it pleased Him. 34:51.950 --> 34:56.430 Thus they gathered in peace and unity and preached the word of God publicly. 34:57.110 --> 34:58.810 Don't miss that, page 403. 34:59.450 --> 35:03.870 They were put in a certain place by God, they gathered in peace and preached the 35:03.870 --> 35:05.090 word of God publicly. 35:05.210 --> 35:06.950 Then they had prayer meetings twice a week. 35:07.310 --> 35:12.270 Sometimes more often they held meetings in which the communal and united prayer was 35:12.270 --> 35:17.570 offered to God, asking Him for all the needs of the brotherhood and giving joyful 35:17.570 --> 35:19.870 thanks for all the good things they enjoyed. 35:20.270 --> 35:25.050 Likewise, intercession was made for emperors and kings, princes, and worldly 35:25.050 --> 35:30.610 authority that God might make them think about the office entrusted to them and 35:30.610 --> 35:34.470 conduct it properly so as to govern peaceably and protect the faithful. 35:35.050 --> 35:44.150 Interesting, preaching publicly even in a time like this and going into these prayer 35:44.150 --> 35:48.570 meetings is what this brother here believes to be some of the success of what 35:48.570 --> 35:49.970 survived this time. 35:50.910 --> 35:52.450 Page 13, now I'll go to that. 35:52.890 --> 35:56.510 I'll do a few more and then I'm going to stop right before the 30-year war and then 35:56.510 --> 35:58.650 we'll take a quick break. 36:00.250 --> 36:07.830 There's a beautiful analogy here of two brothers, a young man and a young woman, 36:07.830 --> 36:09.370 and two brothers that were killed. 36:09.930 --> 36:12.550 This is on page 489 during this time period. 36:12.650 --> 36:15.290 Again, this is the Turkish war. 36:17.910 --> 36:24.910 And I like this brotherhood team. 36:25.030 --> 36:29.010 You know, when they send out missionaries two by two, when you do these things, 36:29.150 --> 36:32.610 the camaraderie that you have in that, I read that in the Circuit Riders with the 36:32.610 --> 36:34.250 Methodists and type of thing. 36:34.290 --> 36:39.650 And here's two young brothers that were zealous for the Lord and they were killed. 36:40.310 --> 36:41.650 Here's one and here's another. 36:42.090 --> 36:47.230 But it's an interesting story how they give it out to them in 489 of volume 1. 36:48.050 --> 36:49.350 These two brothers were caught. 36:49.770 --> 36:53.990 Heinrich and Jacob were beset with 24 ministers who tried to make them waver in 36:53.990 --> 36:55.070 their faith and recant. 36:55.470 --> 36:59.350 But even with their combined efforts, they made no headway against the brothers, 36:59.450 --> 37:03.650 nor could they convict them of any wrongdoing, much less find any just reason 37:03.650 --> 37:04.670 to put them to death. 37:05.170 --> 37:06.730 So they go on doing these different things. 37:06.810 --> 37:11.670 When the dear brothers heard that their hour had come, they rejoiced and was 37:11.670 --> 37:17.110 undismayed, saying it was an even greater joy to them than celebrating a wedding. 37:17.350 --> 37:18.810 Again, this analogy comes through. 37:19.210 --> 37:23.990 Yes, they were of such courage because God made them worthy to die for the truth in 37:23.990 --> 37:29.270 praise of His name, like many servants and saints of God before them who attained the 37:29.270 --> 37:30.010 heavenly crown. 37:30.370 --> 37:31.550 Now here's the way this happened. 37:32.330 --> 37:36.470 When they were led out, they spoke courageously to the great crowd that had 37:36.470 --> 37:40.530 gathered, admonishing them to repent from their sinful life and turn to God. 37:40.750 --> 37:45.470 The two brothers began to sing with overflowing hearts, lifting their voices 37:45.470 --> 37:47.890 in a lovely song of praise to the Lord. 37:48.230 --> 37:53.590 Those present told us that the people were startled and shaken to hear them sing 37:53.590 --> 37:54.950 together so joyfully. 37:55.450 --> 38:00.570 Many of that great gathering wept as they heard the singing. 38:01.070 --> 38:05.330 It touched their hearts that the brothers should have such an inner joy and peace in 38:05.330 --> 38:07.170 the very moment of meeting death. 38:07.570 --> 38:12.810 Eternal joy had already blazed up in them because they were to be with Abraham, 38:13.050 --> 38:16.850 Isaac and Jacob, with the patriarchs and all the holy ones, with all the prophets 38:16.850 --> 38:20.470 and apostles, and with the Lord and with the faithful brothers and the sisters 38:20.470 --> 38:20.910 already. 38:21.010 --> 38:25.690 Yes, with Jesus Christ Himself their Redeemer forever and ever. 38:25.830 --> 38:29.410 They sang until they came to the edge of the water where they were to be drowned. 38:30.290 --> 38:39.270 Then Heinrich said, My brother Jacob, my brother Jacob, we have traveled long 38:39.270 --> 38:43.870 and far together, so now together still let us pass through this temporal death 38:43.870 --> 38:45.750 into the life of the world beyond. 38:46.330 --> 38:50.570 The executioner took brother Jacob Mendel first and pushed him under the water. 38:51.310 --> 38:52.070 This one here. 38:53.270 --> 38:54.610 And pushed him under the water. 38:55.030 --> 39:01.350 When he was dead, the executioner pulled him out and laid him in front of Heinrich 39:01.350 --> 39:08.110 saying, My dear Heinrich, and there he is appealing, My dear Heinrich, take a look 39:08.110 --> 39:11.570 at your brother who has lost his life. 39:11.950 --> 39:15.310 Recant or you must die too. 39:15.450 --> 39:17.030 There is no other way. 39:17.910 --> 39:23.670 But Heinrich said, I will never recant and desert the divine truth. 39:23.850 --> 39:27.650 I will remain firm even if it costs my life. 39:28.510 --> 39:29.530 And you know what happened. 39:30.470 --> 39:37.230 So impressive stories of the zeal and the tenacity of these brothers as they went 39:37.230 --> 39:37.490 on. 39:38.810 --> 39:42.850 Again a little missionary on page 503 there is a mention there I was going to 39:42.850 --> 39:45.390 say that they are talking about sending the missionaries to burn. 39:45.470 --> 39:49.090 Remember we talked about burn and they were starting to make those laws against 39:49.090 --> 39:51.150 the Anabaptist missionaries. 39:51.690 --> 39:55.590 We see some of those in that time period around burn. 39:56.770 --> 39:57.550 It was an interesting thing. 39:57.690 --> 39:59.010 I just threw this out. 39:59.210 --> 40:02.250 It doesn't really tie to our story, but I just thought it was really curious. 40:03.570 --> 40:05.290 I wrote here Hebrew letters on the grapes. 40:07.310 --> 40:08.030 I don't know. 40:09.050 --> 40:12.210 I have no idea what this... this is like a diary. 40:12.350 --> 40:14.230 Remember this guy is just writing stuff that he saw. 40:15.090 --> 40:16.990 And this is in 1602. 40:19.350 --> 40:24.530 He woke up one morning and he said, beautiful Hebrew writing was found on the 40:24.530 --> 40:25.870 grapes in many places. 40:26.350 --> 40:30.210 It was so skillfully done that no one could have painted it better and each one 40:30.210 --> 40:31.310 was different from the other. 40:32.610 --> 40:33.010 Strange. 40:33.610 --> 40:34.250 It lists that. 40:34.290 --> 40:36.030 It's the kind of thing that comes out in the chronicles. 40:36.190 --> 40:39.630 Just little things like that. 40:41.290 --> 40:45.370 Also they go through the concept of this time and praying and stopping for the 40:45.370 --> 40:45.710 battles. 40:46.130 --> 40:50.050 And some of the generals and things comment that there's no way this 40:50.050 --> 40:54.930 particular battle could have been stopped if it wasn't for the intercession of these 40:54.930 --> 40:55.870 brothers that were praying. 40:55.950 --> 40:57.370 The brothers and sisters that were praying. 40:57.910 --> 41:03.290 And there's 579 and 588 there's all this coming out. 41:04.190 --> 41:09.430 And during this war then, and still, on page 597, 41:15.570 --> 41:21.450 this brother Conrad Blousey, a servant of the word, was traveling in Switzerland 41:21.450 --> 41:25.370 that year with three of his brothers and keeping with the task of the brotherhood, 41:25.550 --> 41:29.190 they were sent to gather God's people for his church. 41:29.530 --> 41:33.150 They were on their way back to the community, but brother Conrad had not 41:33.150 --> 41:36.630 taken to heart the warnings that they had been given him and they were captured and 41:36.630 --> 41:37.330 probably killed. 41:37.890 --> 41:41.110 Just again, these little examples of the different things. 41:41.270 --> 41:48.190 And then I'm going to give you this one quote and then we're going to take a 41:48.190 --> 41:48.550 break. 41:48.990 --> 41:56.130 So now we're into this Turkish war and we're about to get into perhaps their 41:56.130 --> 41:56.950 hardest time. 41:56.950 --> 42:04.390 And it's interesting as it's mentioned there in the Chronicles. 42:08.020 --> 42:11.220 Actually they mention every time a comment comes, but here's to give you an example 42:11.220 --> 42:11.800 of one of them. 42:14.200 --> 42:16.360 Page 632 in volume 1. 42:16.820 --> 42:26.230 They finish this phase and he said this, he wrote, "...On November 29, 1618, 42:27.010 --> 42:31.550 around 4 o'clock in the morning, an extraordinary comet appeared. 42:34.310 --> 42:40.330 It was a brilliant and had a very long tail, such as is rarely seen. 42:41.110 --> 42:45.090 After that, it appeared each morning a little earlier until it rose exactly at 42:45.090 --> 42:45.410 midnight. 42:45.770 --> 42:50.290 The time when it rose changed gradually from morning to midnight and from midnight 42:50.290 --> 42:50.930 to evening. 42:51.290 --> 42:54.990 This covered a period of four weeks, namely from November 29th until the end of 42:54.990 --> 42:55.370 December. 42:55.710 --> 43:00.330 It was watched with great awe and terror and was last seen close to the North Star 43:00.330 --> 43:01.290 where it faded away. 43:02.170 --> 43:07.610 In the year following, we were to learn what much suffering and sorrow what it had 43:07.610 --> 43:11.250 signified." Take a break and we'll see. 43:11.330 --> 43:12.410 We'll go into the 30-year war. 43:13.850 --> 43:16.750 Okay, welcome back. 43:18.570 --> 43:25.430 What we get to now is this 30-year war period with the Hutterites. 43:25.870 --> 43:28.830 And again, the 30-year war, I don't have time to get into the details of that, 43:28.930 --> 43:31.650 but it was a war between the Catholics and the Protestants. 43:32.350 --> 43:35.770 And who was going to rule these nations and these areas? 43:36.130 --> 43:39.150 Was this going to be a Catholic kingdom or a Protestant kingdom and they went back 43:39.150 --> 43:39.670 and forth. 43:40.630 --> 43:45.250 And again, you still have the Ottoman Empire trying to make its way up at the 43:45.250 --> 43:48.050 same time and kind of watching to see what the Christians are going to do to 43:48.050 --> 43:48.450 themselves. 43:49.550 --> 43:54.550 And then the Hutterites are in the middle of all this and really, in this day and 43:54.550 --> 43:57.270 age, you could probably not be in a worse place. 43:58.050 --> 44:02.090 And that's why I call them, you'll see at the end of this, I call them the Marine 44:02.090 --> 44:08.950 Corps of the Anabaptists because this is the irregima of the Anabaptists when they 44:08.950 --> 44:11.090 went through all these different times. 44:11.870 --> 44:18.230 I have here written on my paper, in 1618 the 30-year war began and by 1622 44:18.230 --> 44:22.430 Cardinal von Dietrichstein expelled the Hutterites from Arabia and they moved 44:22.430 --> 44:24.570 southeast to Slovakia. 44:25.090 --> 44:28.110 The 30-year war was still raging and Hutterite communities were the prime 44:28.110 --> 44:31.670 target for plundering, pillaging, burning, and looting. 44:32.670 --> 44:38.510 And one particular thing happened that was bad news for the Hutterites and that was 44:38.510 --> 44:42.930 the Battle of White Mountain to give you a little bit of world history. 44:46.270 --> 44:47.750 The Battle of White Mountain. 44:50.130 --> 44:54.210 What this was, all the different, you remember Moravia was always a little 44:54.210 --> 45:01.490 bit more independent in these things and so who was going to fight these Catholic 45:01.490 --> 45:01.950 lords? 45:02.130 --> 45:05.350 And so there was a big battle where, I think I gave the numbers here, 45:06.270 --> 45:13.650 30,000 Bohemian and mercenaries from the Protestant side and they were up against 45:13.650 --> 45:19.050 27,000 by Ferdinand II representing the Holy Roman Empire and the Catholic side. 45:19.550 --> 45:24.650 And it was a huge battle and the Battle of White Mountain and unfortunately for the 45:24.650 --> 45:27.530 Hutterites, the Protestants lost. 45:28.090 --> 45:32.650 And after that, all hope of any kind of this protection from the lords of their 45:32.650 --> 45:36.090 areas was just come to a ruin. 45:37.330 --> 45:45.930 And that's when in 1622, that was 1620, November 8, 1620 and 1622 is when the 45:45.930 --> 45:49.610 Cardinal Dietrich Stein just said, out with all of you. 45:50.150 --> 45:50.910 Out with all of you. 45:50.950 --> 45:53.690 And it was a very pitiful, pitiful time. 45:54.500 --> 45:57.370 And so again, these were very, very hard times. 45:57.850 --> 45:59.070 Let me just thumb through. 45:59.190 --> 46:03.530 I'm just going to thumb through this just to kind of get you a sample of the journal 46:03.530 --> 46:05.270 entries that they put in here. 46:05.630 --> 46:06.450 It's just pitiful. 46:09.350 --> 46:14.330 Okay, terrible remorseless punishment came to us and that was the chastening of God's 46:14.330 --> 46:14.750 people. 46:16.730 --> 46:20.930 October 30, the community at Frischau was plundered twice. 46:21.010 --> 46:23.170 October 31, Trott was plundered. 46:23.430 --> 46:24.610 I'm just going down here. 46:24.750 --> 46:28.910 August 9, the house at Wiederstatten and its old mill was destroyed. 46:29.550 --> 46:32.410 15, 19, September 18, another one destroyed. 46:32.590 --> 46:33.290 Fire set here. 46:33.390 --> 46:35.690 September 19, they go through. 46:36.130 --> 46:38.450 On September 24, a tragic thing occurred. 46:38.570 --> 46:42.890 Our fugitives from Fribitz were trying to return home and put their nursing mothers, 46:42.990 --> 46:47.270 their old, their sick and their children from both Austerlitz and Littenitz into 12 46:47.270 --> 46:49.110 wagons from which they fled. 46:49.470 --> 46:53.110 But they were massacred, they were destroyed and terrible things happened 46:53.110 --> 46:53.390 there. 46:54.370 --> 47:00.710 Turning the page, a whole mob of peasants then began to run into the community and 47:00.710 --> 47:03.890 took the flour, the meat, the salt, the cheese and began to take everything 47:03.890 --> 47:05.770 that was there. 47:07.510 --> 47:12.470 In some places when the enemy was gone, the peasants were even worse because they 47:12.470 --> 47:17.050 were also being plundered in their towns and so they came into our towns. 47:17.130 --> 47:21.750 People always say when you get into non-resistance debates of, well, 47:21.810 --> 47:25.490 what would you do if the Muslims would take over America or the Hitler would not 47:25.490 --> 47:26.010 have been stopped? 47:26.090 --> 47:29.230 What would you do if you are not going to resist yourself and then people are going 47:29.230 --> 47:29.970 to take your food? 47:30.830 --> 47:32.830 Yeah, been there, done that. 47:33.210 --> 47:37.810 It is the theology of martyrdom and we can see that it's not just a theory. 47:38.410 --> 47:41.910 We've been through that as an Anabaptist people and not just the Hutterites but 47:41.910 --> 47:44.790 other groups have done this as well, but this is graphically preserved for us 47:44.790 --> 47:45.750 because of the Chronicles. 47:46.430 --> 47:52.290 He says, it is impossible to overstate the depth of the need and pain we suffered. 47:53.970 --> 47:58.270 When all human hope is gone, we fervently pray to God. 47:59.390 --> 48:03.670 God oppose the enemy and change their fury into kindness towards the devout. 48:04.010 --> 48:08.450 Let us all the more thank the Lord as long as we live for his deliverance and the 48:08.450 --> 48:09.750 good that he has done to us. 48:09.850 --> 48:14.190 Let our lives be more dedicated and holy so that he has no need to bring still 48:14.190 --> 48:16.370 harsher chastisement to us. 48:17.470 --> 48:19.610 Again, just going flipping through here. 48:24.830 --> 48:29.990 Killed here, wars here, worse and worse to all the nations of the countries revolted. 48:30.710 --> 48:34.790 March 25th, they shot a baby in his mother's arm, injured the brothers and 48:34.790 --> 48:39.370 sisters, plundered a house, struck a child dead in his father's arm, cruelly tortured 48:39.370 --> 48:43.750 several others, murdered 52 brothers as well as sister and the child. 48:44.330 --> 48:50.070 One was burned, got pulled, tortured some brothers terribly, in particular Heinrich 48:50.070 --> 48:51.970 Schutzer was burned with red hot iron. 48:52.470 --> 48:56.570 Wounds were cut in his thigh, then gunpowder was poured into the wound and 48:56.570 --> 48:57.470 caught on fire. 48:59.050 --> 49:00.690 These people, he said, I don't even understand. 49:00.830 --> 49:02.110 He said, they are claiming to be Christians. 49:02.210 --> 49:04.150 Even the Turks, the Muslims wouldn't do this. 49:04.350 --> 49:05.110 It is heartbreaking. 49:05.290 --> 49:06.870 More than human nature could stand. 49:07.430 --> 49:11.550 He goes on, such horrible shootings and slashings followed the captives could 49:11.550 --> 49:12.930 scarcely describe it. 49:14.970 --> 49:17.350 He goes into the things in the Battle of White Mountain. 49:17.410 --> 49:18.530 That was before the Battle of White Mountain. 49:19.030 --> 49:19.730 Then it got worse. 49:20.890 --> 49:23.870 Different people were going over the mountains, freezing to death in the 49:23.870 --> 49:30.770 mountains, overwhelmed by fear and despair in these different areas and taken 49:30.770 --> 49:31.470 prisoner. 49:31.810 --> 49:36.370 Some from the community were taken prisoner and helped up a barricade and 49:36.370 --> 49:39.570 throw up on the barricade. 49:39.730 --> 49:42.970 Shot a lady and a boy three or four years old. 49:44.390 --> 49:48.430 And it is just, I mean, it is page after page of this. 49:49.030 --> 49:52.650 All we could do was to commit everything to God, including this outrage and 49:52.650 --> 49:53.650 violence that we suffered. 49:53.830 --> 49:57.970 Oftentimes our greatest fear and need God provided in a merciful way. 49:58.370 --> 50:03.970 Beyond all human comprehension, He promotes generals, completely unknown 50:03.970 --> 50:08.050 to us, generals of foreign nations and languages to help us in this way or that. 50:08.150 --> 50:12.790 They saw God's hand in different things and were very blessed with it. 50:12.850 --> 50:16.310 Two hundred and thirty people killed over here and hurt over there. 50:17.610 --> 50:18.910 Then a famine came. 50:19.030 --> 50:19.710 There was disaster. 50:20.230 --> 50:22.270 It stopped raining and there was famine. 50:22.890 --> 50:23.330 Destruction. 50:23.430 --> 50:26.110 March 6, somebody was dying here. 50:26.190 --> 50:26.910 Another one there. 50:26.970 --> 50:29.530 March 21, the steward, the servant, he died. 50:29.590 --> 50:34.270 But then in the midst of all this, and I just couldn't believe that. 50:34.710 --> 50:37.610 So here it is now, 1622. 50:39.350 --> 50:42.030 So in the middle of this disaster, everything is falling apart. 50:42.170 --> 50:42.990 They are barely living. 50:43.150 --> 50:49.250 This year too, we followed the example of our forefathers by sending out several 50:49.250 --> 50:51.410 brothers into various places in Germany. 50:52.250 --> 50:57.350 In the middle of all that, there was something inside them that they believed 50:57.350 --> 51:02.430 that part of who they were as Christians had to spread the gospel. 51:02.830 --> 51:06.570 And even in the midst of this thirty year war of absolute pillage and tyranny, 51:07.230 --> 51:08.070 they still did this. 51:08.150 --> 51:09.530 They even comment on it. 51:10.230 --> 51:12.850 They went, this is page 678 in volume 1. 51:13.550 --> 51:18.750 They went to seek those on fire for the truth and to call people to repentance. 51:19.430 --> 51:25.550 It amazed many people in Bohemia where both hostile armies were encamped as well 51:25.550 --> 51:31.530 as in Germany that our defenseless members set out in a time of such terrible danger 51:31.530 --> 51:36.370 when scarcely anyone, whether of high or low estate, could travel in safety. 51:36.950 --> 51:41.710 But the Lord was their protector and they relied on Him alone when their task was 51:41.710 --> 51:43.770 completed through the intercession of His people. 51:44.090 --> 51:46.370 He often then brought them home again safe. 51:46.710 --> 51:47.810 Praising God for that. 51:48.710 --> 51:50.010 So, amazing. 51:50.170 --> 51:50.990 It still goes on. 51:51.110 --> 51:57.290 At one place, on page 678, they were mixing clay with their food to try to help 51:57.290 --> 52:01.130 survive and just literally starving to death. 52:01.890 --> 52:02.970 They're being spelled out. 52:03.050 --> 52:04.570 Again, I have just written pages here. 52:04.730 --> 52:08.830 Page 765, 766, 769, 770. 52:09.130 --> 52:12.130 Again, each one they're talking about sending out missionaries, sending out 52:12.130 --> 52:13.510 missionaries, sending out missionaries. 52:14.010 --> 52:20.570 It's almost as if these brothers knew, if we stop, if we stop the mission 52:20.570 --> 52:24.250 activity, if we stop the forward advance of the gospel, we're going to deteriorate. 52:24.370 --> 52:25.930 We're going to start falling apart. 52:26.070 --> 52:28.690 We're going to start, we're going to start to die. 52:28.790 --> 52:32.450 And when they saw lots of people dying, literally, and then also during this 52:32.450 --> 52:36.070 persecution, they're mentioning here, there are oftentimes a lot of people 52:36.070 --> 52:36.570 recanted. 52:36.970 --> 52:37.890 I mean, it happened a lot. 52:38.170 --> 52:38.650 People left. 52:38.730 --> 52:39.590 People said, that's enough. 52:39.830 --> 52:44.130 Even back when they were saying you had to just be in living in caves and digging 52:44.130 --> 52:44.450 holes. 52:44.590 --> 52:45.970 Many of them said, that's not for me. 52:46.070 --> 52:46.350 Thanks. 52:46.890 --> 52:48.870 And recanted to the faith. 52:49.330 --> 52:53.510 And so for all those people, they had to keep going and keep going. 52:54.010 --> 52:59.290 And this is where that Semper Fi of the Anabaptists really shows itself in their 52:59.290 --> 53:02.110 tenacious attitude to keep things going. 53:03.050 --> 53:07.010 At this point, we're coming to the end of the 30 year war. 53:07.890 --> 53:15.570 And it was in 1648, and it was good, but they were still in a bad place. 53:15.790 --> 53:19.810 Even after the war ended in 1648, Catholics controlled most of Hungary. 53:20.330 --> 53:23.490 So there was renewed religious persecution, torture, whippings, 53:23.650 --> 53:27.730 and book burnings were among the convergent methods used by the Jesuit 53:27.730 --> 53:28.250 priest. 53:28.790 --> 53:32.550 This is also a time, if you know your church history, or your world history, 53:32.770 --> 53:40.930 that the Ottoman Empire now was coming up and expanding, and they had taken actually 53:40.930 --> 53:41.390 Vienna. 53:41.990 --> 53:43.910 They took it and held it for a few months. 53:44.490 --> 53:51.650 And this was like the point of world history that could have went one way or 53:51.650 --> 53:52.030 the other. 53:52.490 --> 53:55.030 During this time, it's interesting in the Chronicles, and the footnotes in the 53:55.030 --> 53:58.770 Chronicles back this up in records, that building up to this taking of Vienna, 53:58.930 --> 54:04.310 there was one time a 15 pound hailstorm was coming up and coming down on the area. 54:04.670 --> 54:06.950 It was documented both in the Chronicles and in different times. 54:07.150 --> 54:15.810 Huge different storms and things like that that was happening. 54:15.870 --> 54:19.110 There was an earthquake, and lots of comets, just like this. 54:19.190 --> 54:21.310 That might have been actually one of these in this time. 54:21.710 --> 54:24.470 The comets were being seen. 54:25.330 --> 54:29.610 When I read that, when I considered what was happening in world history at the 54:29.610 --> 54:37.210 time, and I think back of Daniel and the battles that go on in heaven when we pray 54:37.210 --> 54:39.130 and Daniel fights. 54:39.230 --> 54:42.770 I just can't help but think there was some powerful warfare going on in the heavens 54:42.770 --> 54:43.930 during this time. 54:45.790 --> 54:48.010 In 1665, there's these. 54:48.090 --> 54:49.090 They have a prayer meeting here. 54:49.170 --> 54:50.590 They're talking about these different things. 54:50.850 --> 54:57.010 And finally, they continue to be beat down, continue to be persecuted. 54:58.270 --> 54:58.730 It was interesting. 54:58.850 --> 55:03.430 One thing they also mention, again getting close to the time of the taking of Vienna. 55:04.010 --> 55:08.550 They go out and one time he writes in his Chronicles that many people in the city 55:08.550 --> 55:13.110 saw a great sword in the sky pointed towards the east. 55:13.190 --> 55:14.630 He said, I don't know what this means. 55:15.230 --> 55:16.390 God knows its meaning. 55:16.730 --> 55:17.370 And then a pillar. 55:17.790 --> 55:19.850 And lots of different things were happening in this time period. 55:20.010 --> 55:23.190 It must have been pretty interesting. 55:23.930 --> 55:26.950 And when you think of all the ramifications that would have happened if 55:26.950 --> 55:30.270 the Ottoman Empire would have continued to take the western world. 55:31.190 --> 55:35.690 I just imagine there's a lot more that was happening than just fighting on the 55:35.690 --> 55:35.990 ground. 55:37.210 --> 55:42.800 Yeah, they were. 55:42.920 --> 55:45.000 Particularly where they're going now, they're getting there. 55:45.040 --> 55:48.000 But when they went down to Hungary, the Ottoman had already taken part of 55:48.000 --> 55:49.140 Hungary and Yugoslavia. 55:49.620 --> 55:52.180 And when they were scattering out, they were getting into these places. 55:52.960 --> 55:57.060 And now, where they're going from now, and this next step, is entirely into 55:57.960 --> 55:58.760 Turkish areas. 56:08.480 --> 56:08.880 Yeah, 56:15.210 --> 56:15.790 I know. 56:16.030 --> 56:16.590 Yeah, amen. 56:16.950 --> 56:21.650 And you see this, and they even say that in one of these quotes here that when they 56:21.650 --> 56:25.470 get over, they're about to make this decision now to go over into Transylvania. 56:26.190 --> 56:29.810 And they say, it's better here than it was with the Catholics and the Protestants. 56:30.070 --> 56:32.270 And the Muslims was actually taking better care of them. 56:32.550 --> 56:34.390 So, interestingly enough. 56:34.930 --> 56:37.750 So finally, they get through this, they're beaten down, beaten down, 56:37.870 --> 56:40.690 finally people are leaving, but then they're getting the missionaries, 56:40.850 --> 56:45.290 getting, and finally they get to the very end, and volume one closes with this 56:45.290 --> 56:47.290 appeal to the Dutch Mennonites. 56:47.470 --> 56:52.270 And saying, help, help, we're dying, we're starving to death. 56:52.550 --> 56:55.890 And there's this letter that's written to the Dutch Mennonites, which I appreciate, 56:56.810 --> 57:00.290 because they call them brother and that type of thing. 57:00.430 --> 57:04.470 And a lot of these early guys in their zeal, the Swiss brethren were the same, 57:04.630 --> 57:08.010 certainly the Dutch in their early days were the same, and the Hutterites were the 57:08.010 --> 57:10.050 same, that was kind of the, we're it personality. 57:10.770 --> 57:14.390 And I like to see at the end of this, if there's one thing that God gave them 57:14.390 --> 57:17.850 through all that great persecution was a humility to say, help. 57:18.510 --> 57:23.250 And they wrote to the Dutch, and the Dutch did beautifully help them financially. 57:24.830 --> 57:31.430 And in that letter, at the end of volume one, they mention a lot about the idea of, 57:31.430 --> 57:36.290 the idea of calling them brother and that type of thing. 57:36.330 --> 57:37.250 So I appreciate that. 57:37.570 --> 57:42.230 You know, and I think that just like we need a brotherhood, my personal feeling 57:42.770 --> 57:45.910 that brotherhoods need each other. 57:46.330 --> 57:50.230 And it's good to help one another, encourage one another, hold each other 57:50.230 --> 57:50.630 accountable. 57:51.670 --> 57:54.230 And that's the kind of thing that happened with them. 57:55.050 --> 57:56.490 All right, so now we go on. 57:57.130 --> 58:03.430 And this tenacious group of people is still trying to limp on and keep going and 58:03.430 --> 58:03.950 keep going. 58:04.450 --> 58:09.890 But the hard times keep falling on. 58:09.990 --> 58:14.250 In 1685, I wrote, after constant torturing and robbing, the Hutterites gave up 58:14.250 --> 58:15.450 community of goods. 58:16.050 --> 58:20.070 They still had the lair and other church services, but community of goods was 58:20.070 --> 58:20.690 abandoned. 58:21.430 --> 58:24.330 And so after all that, they said, okay, let's break this up. 58:24.450 --> 58:25.430 Let's meet in our little homes. 58:25.510 --> 58:26.710 We'll still have a common area. 58:27.250 --> 58:29.430 They still read the lair. 58:29.510 --> 58:30.230 They had the teachings. 58:30.470 --> 58:34.810 They had these different things, but they said, we've got to just survive 58:34.810 --> 58:35.090 here. 58:35.950 --> 58:40.270 In 1688, all the Hutterite babies, the Catholics kept coming in here. 58:40.530 --> 58:44.670 Now, before they went to this area, the Transylvania area, building up to 58:44.670 --> 58:48.310 that, sorry, that the Catholics were coming in and sending Jesuits into their 58:48.310 --> 58:49.770 place and persecuting them. 58:50.150 --> 58:53.510 And it was some very hard times, very hard times indeed. 58:54.610 --> 58:58.790 And this is where the Chronicles turns very honest. 58:59.610 --> 59:05.330 Well, I hope it all was, but very, not honest, but very humbly revealing of 59:05.330 --> 59:11.990 what Johannes Waldner began to talk about some of this time period. 59:12.030 --> 59:14.470 I'm going to read to you a few of those things. 59:15.730 --> 59:22.710 So as they were trying to make their way through this time, the Catholics now who 59:22.710 --> 59:27.090 had full control were trying to get at them and do things to them. 59:27.270 --> 59:32.190 And after they were already beat down so much, it did begin to start to wear on 59:32.190 --> 59:32.470 them. 59:33.130 --> 59:37.310 And I have here in 272, 59:41.590 --> 59:50.540 and on page 271 of volume two, large numbers left the brotherhood until 59:50.540 --> 59:54.080 at last the community was remained, was ruined. 59:54.160 --> 59:55.480 And it almost came to an end. 59:56.100 --> 59:59.660 One third of the people died that year and things were getting bad. 01:00:00.220 --> 01:00:07.560 1622, he goes up and just makes a little brief walking through some of these hard 01:00:07.560 --> 01:00:08.000 times. 01:00:08.280 --> 01:00:12.660 He comes to this passage in 272, he says the Hutterian church nearly came 01:00:12.660 --> 01:00:17.920 to the same point where it lost everything because it had left its first love. 01:00:18.720 --> 01:00:24.980 And as lost the first purity and integrity, the Lord removed its lampstand 01:00:24.980 --> 01:00:26.080 from its place. 01:00:26.720 --> 01:00:27.120 Interesting. 01:00:27.860 --> 01:00:28.920 That was from their own words. 01:00:29.220 --> 01:00:34.120 Johannes Waltner said that he believed that this was happening. 01:00:34.260 --> 01:00:38.500 He said the brothers and sisters no longer gave such a clear witness of godliness and 01:00:38.500 --> 01:00:40.700 dedication as in the early days. 01:00:41.580 --> 01:00:43.760 Things were bad here. 01:00:45.820 --> 01:00:48.560 They started to be able to not organize. 01:00:48.840 --> 01:00:50.460 They weren't raising up other leaders. 01:00:50.960 --> 01:00:52.700 They weren't getting their message across. 01:00:54.040 --> 01:00:59.440 And it was a hard task for their teachers, but things went from bad to worse. 01:01:00.140 --> 01:01:03.700 He mentioned things like sleeping during the meetings, sleeping in church. 01:01:04.160 --> 01:01:05.260 Hard rebukes were given. 01:01:05.920 --> 01:01:06.720 People were lazy. 01:01:06.920 --> 01:01:09.160 People were basically losing their vision. 01:01:09.160 --> 01:01:12.960 They were beaten down to the point where they were beginning to lose their vision. 01:01:13.520 --> 01:01:18.280 A revealing thing in 284, it says to make the matter clear, dear brothers, 01:01:18.540 --> 01:01:21.380 Johannes Waltner is writing this later to future generations. 01:01:22.000 --> 01:01:26.780 To make the matter clear, dear brothers, the church is and must be established by 01:01:26.780 --> 01:01:28.100 the Holy Spirit. 01:01:28.820 --> 01:01:34.520 It is the only place where the true brotherly love of the church can be 01:01:34.520 --> 01:01:37.720 practiced fairly and impartially. 01:01:38.160 --> 01:01:44.480 And he begins to see just this lack of the indwelling place of the Holy Spirit. 01:01:44.680 --> 01:01:50.880 He rebukes him for slander and gossip and the problem that the gossip is causing 01:01:50.880 --> 01:01:51.220 them. 01:01:54.620 --> 01:01:58.580 He talks about the different clothes they are getting into, the different attitudes 01:01:58.580 --> 01:01:59.720 they are following the world. 01:02:00.040 --> 01:02:04.700 And he finally gets to this beautiful prayer found on page 303. 01:02:05.180 --> 01:02:13.060 And Johannes Waltner says, O Lord God Almighty, grant that we may once more know 01:02:13.060 --> 01:02:20.640 a time when you daily add to your church those who are being saved, so that our 01:02:20.640 --> 01:02:22.240 hearts may rejoice in it. 01:02:22.620 --> 01:02:29.140 How old and how barren has grown Sarah, Abraham's wife, your church, who ought to 01:02:29.140 --> 01:02:33.980 have children, to bear children for eternal life, that your praise may be 01:02:33.980 --> 01:02:35.360 proclaimed on earth. 01:02:36.180 --> 01:02:41.120 You see, he is noticing that after all that wear it down and wear it down and 01:02:41.120 --> 01:02:43.880 wear it down, finally they are getting to the point where they are just losing the 01:02:43.880 --> 01:02:44.220 vision. 01:02:44.400 --> 01:02:48.380 They are going on and Johannes Waltner is the elder here and he is just bemoaning 01:02:48.380 --> 01:02:55.220 that we don't have that spirit and we need to somehow return and get that kind of 01:02:55.220 --> 01:02:55.900 spirit again. 01:02:58.420 --> 01:03:01.560 He then talks about the idea of the Jesuits. 01:03:01.920 --> 01:03:05.800 To make matters worse, the Catholics were then sending Jesuits in and forced them 01:03:05.800 --> 01:03:09.260 onto the community and make agreements with them. 01:03:09.320 --> 01:03:10.240 And here was one of the agreements. 01:03:10.700 --> 01:03:14.920 In page 310, the Jesuits refused to release some imprisoned brothers unless 01:03:14.920 --> 01:03:21.380 the whole congregation signed an agreement to attend church and have their small 01:03:21.380 --> 01:03:22.280 children baptized. 01:03:24.140 --> 01:03:28.240 So it was bad already, you are losing the fire, the lamp stand is practically gone, 01:03:28.320 --> 01:03:29.720 Johannes Waltner I guess said it was gone. 01:03:30.920 --> 01:03:35.640 And then this Jesuit attack says, ok I will let your brothers go if you sign 01:03:35.640 --> 01:03:35.940 this. 01:03:36.620 --> 01:03:39.820 In the end the people signed it and the people were set free. 01:03:40.540 --> 01:03:45.560 That is how easily they gave up true Christian baptism, signing against their 01:03:45.560 --> 01:03:49.680 own hearts and consciences because they were not willing to suffer for God and His 01:03:49.680 --> 01:03:51.160 truth, the Chronicles write. 01:03:51.800 --> 01:03:56.840 And then this one after they finally do that first baptism, someone is watching it 01:03:56.840 --> 01:04:04.120 and it says here, the brothers and therefore returned home after the elder 01:04:04.120 --> 01:04:08.340 was deeply sorry for what he had done, when the local priest came to the first 01:04:08.340 --> 01:04:10.000 time to baptize a baby. 01:04:11.080 --> 01:04:16.080 This man is looking through a window and Jacob Pullman saw him through a window and 01:04:16.080 --> 01:04:20.800 cried out, oh woe is me, what have I done? 01:04:21.600 --> 01:04:26.080 And they realize we have let it all go, it is gone, I am letting our babies get 01:04:26.080 --> 01:04:30.200 baptized, this minister is watching this and how did it get to this point? 01:04:32.260 --> 01:04:36.040 A disturbance followed from all that, they rushed and attacked the pastor and 01:04:36.040 --> 01:04:41.880 all different things, it was just like non-stop letting up, it just went from bad 01:04:41.880 --> 01:04:45.200 to bad to bad with all these different things. 01:04:46.260 --> 01:04:50.760 They sent more Jesuits in at different times, they made an agreement to come to 01:04:50.760 --> 01:04:56.240 them and to let them into their church and it was terrible. 01:04:57.880 --> 01:05:04.460 Finally they had a group of them made to Transylvania to Hermenstadt in 01:05:04.460 --> 01:05:07.320 Transylvania and began to get there. 01:05:08.240 --> 01:05:14.340 There the Jesuits asked to come in there and they allowed the Jesuits to preach. 01:05:14.460 --> 01:05:18.120 The preacher said, okay, just let me come in and I will talk to your people and if 01:05:18.120 --> 01:05:20.820 you agree to do that, the preacher made the mistake and let the Jesuit come into 01:05:20.820 --> 01:05:21.960 their church and preach. 01:05:22.320 --> 01:05:26.060 He mentions in the Chronicles that he was faking and crying and saying, you brothers 01:05:26.060 --> 01:05:31.820 just don't understand the truth and began to explain to him from the Catholic faith 01:05:31.820 --> 01:05:35.200 to them and they were so weakened and so lacking in their understanding that they 01:05:35.200 --> 01:05:35.620 bought it. 01:05:35.940 --> 01:05:39.600 He said, yeah, alright, and they left and they became Catholics. 01:05:40.260 --> 01:05:47.160 And so worse and worse and it was just beaten down and made to a last where it 01:05:47.160 --> 01:05:49.080 was finally hardly anything left. 01:05:51.000 --> 01:05:57.620 And then he says this, finally 01:06:02.250 --> 01:06:07.310 he gets to that point, he says, now it has come to a complete ruin. 01:06:07.690 --> 01:06:10.950 He says, now I continue telling how God the Lord did not let the light of the 01:06:10.950 --> 01:06:14.830 divine truth die down and be entirely extinguished. 01:06:15.110 --> 01:06:21.730 To the praise and glory of his name he left a tiny spark alive and kept it alive 01:06:21.730 --> 01:06:24.890 to this very day and can be found in the following history. 01:06:25.590 --> 01:06:30.410 So here again, a bad time in their life and they had got to a point where things 01:06:30.410 --> 01:06:36.330 were very bad and it looked like things were going nowhere and there was about 50 01:06:36.330 --> 01:06:37.610 Hutterites left. 01:06:38.570 --> 01:06:43.870 At one time 50,000 or 40,000 or so, 30 at least, we're down to 50. 01:06:44.190 --> 01:06:45.670 Beaten down to almost nothing. 01:06:46.730 --> 01:06:47.390 Almost nothing. 01:06:47.930 --> 01:06:48.790 And then this happened. 01:06:51.590 --> 01:06:58.710 In 1755, well in 1752 it says that the Hutterites were here in the Chronicles. 01:06:58.870 --> 01:07:02.850 They began to have these revivals that were going on in the eastern side of 01:07:02.850 --> 01:07:03.250 Germany. 01:07:03.910 --> 01:07:06.910 And people started to get a hold of these writings of Luther and they started 01:07:06.910 --> 01:07:11.550 talking about faith and there was a group of people that were gathering together and 01:07:11.550 --> 01:07:12.390 they got revived. 01:07:12.910 --> 01:07:16.350 And it says here that they got a hold of these Lutheran books and they got a hold 01:07:16.350 --> 01:07:18.190 of these things and they said, wow this is exciting. 01:07:18.830 --> 01:07:23.750 And on page 369 volume 2, these books and writings were introduced to the 01:07:23.750 --> 01:07:26.070 Corinthians, that's the eastern wayside of Germany. 01:07:26.630 --> 01:07:30.610 And the mid 18th century, although they were brought in secretly, they produced a 01:07:30.610 --> 01:07:32.490 great fervent and revival. 01:07:33.070 --> 01:07:37.790 Many peasants stopped attending church and read the Bible and other books in their 01:07:37.790 --> 01:07:38.410 homes instead. 01:07:38.870 --> 01:07:43.490 They also began holding secret meetings at night for the joy of hearing God's word. 01:07:43.690 --> 01:07:48.230 Many others went long distance through the dark and rain, snow and wind. 01:07:48.270 --> 01:07:51.250 In these meetings they prayed, read the Bible and other books, 01:07:51.390 --> 01:07:52.310 sang and talked together. 01:07:52.790 --> 01:07:56.690 This was happening not only in one place but spread nearly to every judicial 01:07:56.690 --> 01:08:00.330 district in Corinthian and for instance this area around these different places. 01:08:00.490 --> 01:08:03.990 There was a big revival that was happening in this far east Germany. 01:08:06.190 --> 01:08:07.430 So they got a hold of these things. 01:08:07.530 --> 01:08:10.570 Regarding such books therefore, people started finding these books and 01:08:10.570 --> 01:08:11.650 they said they were very dangerous. 01:08:11.770 --> 01:08:14.510 So the Catholics got everybody's books and they stamped it. 01:08:14.570 --> 01:08:18.990 Unless it had the king stamped on this book then we were going to consider it 01:08:18.990 --> 01:08:19.990 illegal. 01:08:20.670 --> 01:08:23.110 But then they stopped going to church. 01:08:23.270 --> 01:08:25.830 They started meeting in their little cottage services and you know what the 01:08:25.830 --> 01:08:26.310 story is. 01:08:26.570 --> 01:08:27.670 They finally were arrested. 01:08:28.050 --> 01:08:28.710 It was interesting. 01:08:28.850 --> 01:08:32.610 One of the things that they said when they were mad about all these revived people 01:08:32.610 --> 01:08:36.910 reading these books and the Bibles, this one guy said, he says nothing is kept 01:08:36.910 --> 01:08:38.990 in its proper place anymore, this Catholic judge. 01:08:39.390 --> 01:08:43.730 He said many people have the effrontery to meddle in matters not fitting for them. 01:08:43.850 --> 01:08:47.930 A farmer or head of the family should have a plow, whip or ox goat in his hand. 01:08:48.050 --> 01:08:48.670 Not a book. 01:08:48.950 --> 01:08:52.530 His wife should have a cooking spoon and household keys. 01:08:52.830 --> 01:08:53.510 Not a book. 01:08:53.790 --> 01:08:57.470 A farm laborer should have a hoe, woodcutter's axe, flail or manure fort. 01:08:57.750 --> 01:08:58.410 Not a book. 01:08:58.690 --> 01:09:02.270 A servant girl should be at the spinning wheel feeding the pigs or similar work, 01:09:02.470 --> 01:09:04.150 not occupied with a book. 01:09:04.510 --> 01:09:08.230 But now no one is content with a rifle station and work. 01:09:08.430 --> 01:09:09.890 Everybody wants to be a priest. 01:09:10.530 --> 01:09:13.690 And that was their attitude of dealing with these things. 01:09:14.210 --> 01:09:20.650 These people then, the empress at that time said she was kind of nice and she 01:09:20.650 --> 01:09:29.010 allowed them then to be gone to the far end of her domain there. 01:09:30.030 --> 01:09:31.630 Let me catch where I'm at here. 01:09:33.990 --> 01:09:37.630 They experienced a miraculous revival in the stringent attempt to Catholicize her 01:09:37.630 --> 01:09:39.090 empire. 01:09:39.390 --> 01:09:44.710 Empress Maria Theresa, not to be confused with Mother Teresa, Maria Theresa had 01:09:44.710 --> 01:09:47.710 deported these Lutherans to the remote borders of her empire. 01:09:47.890 --> 01:09:51.770 She allowed the revived Lutherans to practice their religion but only in the 01:09:51.770 --> 01:09:53.430 fringes of her domain. 01:09:54.030 --> 01:09:55.510 However, these were different. 01:09:55.630 --> 01:09:58.130 These were some names that started to come in as part of this revival. 01:09:58.490 --> 01:10:01.690 Some people called the Waldners, the Hoffers, the Kleinsassers, 01:10:01.810 --> 01:10:04.230 the Glanzers, the Wurzs and perhaps even more. 01:10:04.570 --> 01:10:08.310 But the thing is she said I'll let you go there but I want you if you go there to 01:10:08.310 --> 01:10:10.170 swear an oath of allegiance to me. 01:10:12.810 --> 01:10:14.730 Well, these people were a little different. 01:10:15.190 --> 01:10:18.590 They said well we've been reading the Bible and Jesus says you can't swear 01:10:18.590 --> 01:10:19.110 oaths. 01:10:19.370 --> 01:10:20.250 So we can't do that. 01:10:20.650 --> 01:10:23.510 I'll give you free farms, I'll give you free land, I'll let you go there and even 01:10:23.510 --> 01:10:26.210 give you free land if you swear an oath. 01:10:26.630 --> 01:10:30.450 And they said well how can you make me do something if it's not in God's word. 01:10:30.930 --> 01:10:31.770 And they didn't do it. 01:10:32.250 --> 01:10:36.930 So because of that they started then to work amongst the brothers. 01:10:37.750 --> 01:10:42.510 They had to get menial jobs and they started meeting up with some of the last 01:10:42.510 --> 01:10:43.870 remnant of the Hutterites. 01:10:44.330 --> 01:10:48.870 And now you can turn over to the second handout here and I'll hurry up. 01:10:50.850 --> 01:10:55.250 And as they were there with these other, they started to look at these other 01:10:55.250 --> 01:10:58.050 others, they started to be impressed with their life. 01:10:58.690 --> 01:11:01.890 And as they were impressed with their life they started to know more. 01:11:02.210 --> 01:11:05.970 And as they wanted to know more they started showing them some different works. 01:11:06.570 --> 01:11:09.750 And even though they weren't meeting with the Hutterites anymore, as Hutterite 01:11:10.290 --> 01:11:13.370 colonies anymore, they still had church services and they gave them Peter 01:11:13.370 --> 01:11:15.170 Ritterman's writing, they gave them certain things. 01:11:15.710 --> 01:11:18.190 And these brothers started to get excited. 01:11:18.670 --> 01:11:22.050 And they started to say, wow, this is pretty interesting. 01:11:22.470 --> 01:11:23.630 Tell us more about this. 01:11:23.930 --> 01:11:26.910 And they went home and they compared it to the gospel and they read it with the 01:11:26.910 --> 01:11:29.230 gospel and they read it with these writings and they got more excited. 01:11:29.610 --> 01:11:31.650 And they said well, let's do it. 01:11:32.490 --> 01:11:36.930 So they got everybody together, they got them excited, and on volume 2, 01:11:37.010 --> 01:11:41.610 page 385, it mentions they met at Andreas Wirt's house and they began to have the 01:11:41.610 --> 01:11:44.750 church service there and things were going great. 01:11:45.110 --> 01:11:48.350 And they started to have a new revival of these people. 01:11:49.670 --> 01:11:54.850 As they went on and started meeting, it was impressive. 01:11:55.410 --> 01:11:57.990 There was one already arrested quickly named Michael Hoffer. 01:11:58.050 --> 01:11:58.890 He died in prison. 01:11:59.250 --> 01:12:03.070 So as soon as they got started again, as soon as they grabbed some of the cubs 01:12:03.070 --> 01:12:05.650 from the lions, the persecution happened again. 01:12:06.150 --> 01:12:07.530 And they began to come down on them. 01:12:09.550 --> 01:12:14.810 And then, so you have this first generation people revived, on fire for the 01:12:14.810 --> 01:12:17.830 Lord, and now they're starting this movement back again and they want to do 01:12:17.830 --> 01:12:17.950 it. 01:12:18.010 --> 01:12:20.450 But what happens with first generation Christians? 01:12:25.170 --> 01:12:29.010 What happens a lot of times that we read about in the first generation of the 01:12:29.010 --> 01:12:30.710 Hutterites and the first generations here? 01:12:33.750 --> 01:12:35.190 They started to have a little fight. 01:12:35.750 --> 01:12:40.030 Andreas Wirt's married this couple that the rest of the community, another 01:12:40.030 --> 01:12:43.090 community, the church community didn't like. 01:12:43.490 --> 01:12:46.710 And so they didn't approve of who this boy was marrying and so they got upset with 01:12:46.710 --> 01:12:46.790 it. 01:12:46.810 --> 01:12:47.890 He said, I'm going to marry her anyway. 01:12:48.430 --> 01:12:52.090 And they started having this big wedding feast and everything and finally they were 01:12:52.090 --> 01:12:55.930 getting already to the point of a split already. 01:12:56.490 --> 01:12:58.650 And I know you're thinking, oh no, here it comes. 01:12:59.170 --> 01:13:03.170 But here's something that I want to show you for something that we can learn, 01:13:03.390 --> 01:13:03.730 all right? 01:13:04.630 --> 01:13:08.630 And it's June 16, 1765 and they're starting to this and they're already 01:13:08.630 --> 01:13:09.770 starting to split up again. 01:13:10.270 --> 01:13:14.310 They discipline, one of the communities want discipline on Andreas Wirt's because 01:13:14.310 --> 01:13:15.670 he didn't listen to them. 01:13:15.910 --> 01:13:18.550 They, of course, with him and all his people start getting mad and they were 01:13:18.550 --> 01:13:19.250 going to break up. 01:13:19.770 --> 01:13:24.070 So it says on here on page 397, when the four arrived, they talked with 01:13:24.070 --> 01:13:25.850 the brothers about the division between them. 01:13:26.290 --> 01:13:30.430 But after a great deal of arguing and each side insisting their own opinion was 01:13:30.430 --> 01:13:34.110 right, it almost seemed as if nothing would come of the uniting. 01:13:34.770 --> 01:13:36.830 They had, in fact, already parted. 01:13:37.450 --> 01:13:43.290 Andreas Wirt's and his son-in-law were setting out for Ebersdorf, the two others 01:13:43.290 --> 01:13:43.970 for Stein. 01:13:44.510 --> 01:13:50.490 And Andreas turned around and said, they're about to split, and Andreas Wirt's 01:13:50.490 --> 01:13:58.410 turned around and said this, let us submit completely and think of nothing but making 01:13:58.410 --> 01:13:58.950 peace. 01:13:59.970 --> 01:14:04.850 We are the only brothers in Transylvania and we can't, and can't the few of us be 01:14:04.850 --> 01:14:05.290 united? 01:14:06.150 --> 01:14:12.690 So finally somebody in a time of passion decided that they're going to actually 01:14:12.690 --> 01:14:13.270 have peace. 01:14:13.610 --> 01:14:17.050 The three united with Kurtz and with him and Andreas told the brothers there. 01:14:17.670 --> 01:14:23.130 The three returned to Krutz, the community with him, and Andreas told the brothers 01:14:23.130 --> 01:14:25.610 there, we have changed our mind, we want to accept their discipline, 01:14:25.710 --> 01:14:28.030 their correction, and unite with you. 01:14:28.110 --> 01:14:32.390 And so they came back together and was able to go in a united front. 01:14:32.470 --> 01:14:36.230 So I think that's a rare moment in church history and I think it deserves, 01:14:36.570 --> 01:14:37.750 let's give them a round of applause. 01:14:37.850 --> 01:14:38.430 Let's hear it. 01:14:39.090 --> 01:14:42.790 Instead of splitting, they got together and came together. 01:14:42.890 --> 01:14:44.010 I think that's incredible. 01:14:45.310 --> 01:14:47.050 Wish we could learn that spirit. 01:14:47.050 --> 01:14:52.290 Alright, they're keeping going and yes, it never stops. 01:14:52.390 --> 01:14:53.230 It never stops. 01:14:53.790 --> 01:14:58.830 They're going through the different things and now finally they get up to the point 01:14:58.830 --> 01:15:03.630 where they're planning on, people are saying, well we're going to take your 01:15:03.630 --> 01:15:07.850 children and we're going to put them in orphanages. 01:15:07.950 --> 01:15:09.230 They say we've got to get out of here. 01:15:09.770 --> 01:15:11.650 And so finally they plan an escape. 01:15:11.950 --> 01:15:14.630 A miraculous thing happens that they were able to leave the prison. 01:15:15.010 --> 01:15:24.170 Many of them were arrested and put in prison and they were allowed to escape in 01:15:24.170 --> 01:15:24.910 broad daylight. 01:15:25.570 --> 01:15:30.710 But finally they got to this point where where were they going to go? 01:15:31.130 --> 01:15:33.250 Of course it was going and hiding. 01:15:33.530 --> 01:15:34.430 People were after them. 01:15:35.010 --> 01:15:37.630 It was terrible and so they had to leave at night. 01:15:37.830 --> 01:15:42.750 And the place they had to cross, you see that picture I have on your map? 01:15:43.250 --> 01:15:47.670 They had to cross these mountains to finally get to the place where they felt 01:15:47.670 --> 01:15:52.790 was much safer in Islamic countries here than where they were now. 01:15:53.870 --> 01:15:56.970 And let me read you where they're going. 01:15:57.030 --> 01:16:01.850 So they're going from Transylvania to Wallachia and here in this area they 01:16:01.850 --> 01:16:02.250 cross. 01:16:02.630 --> 01:16:05.010 And finally they get to this part here with these mountains and it's an 01:16:05.010 --> 01:16:05.850 impressive story. 01:16:07.410 --> 01:16:12.150 The very same day the guys returned and we made ready to leave in the evening. 01:16:12.310 --> 01:16:15.090 This is their journal entry before they're going to one of those peaks. 01:16:16.010 --> 01:16:20.170 It was impossible to take the wagons over the mountains so we loaded what was 01:16:20.170 --> 01:16:22.430 absolutely necessary into the four horses. 01:16:22.590 --> 01:16:27.310 We unharnessed the four oxen and drove them with us leaving the empty wagons for 01:16:27.310 --> 01:16:30.490 the guides to bring them customs as opportunity offered. 01:16:30.970 --> 01:16:35.410 When everything was ready and the sun began to sink we started on our way again. 01:16:35.930 --> 01:16:37.330 It was October 13th. 01:16:37.790 --> 01:16:41.950 The guides led us through pathless thickets and wilderness for they knew 01:16:41.950 --> 01:16:43.550 where we would be safe from danger. 01:16:43.750 --> 01:16:46.930 There was a familiar with every path and hiding place in the mountains. 01:16:47.090 --> 01:16:52.710 The ground began to rise sharply and often the only way was to clamber upon the hands 01:16:52.710 --> 01:16:53.250 and feet. 01:16:53.550 --> 01:16:57.890 Each of us had to scramble up the best he could so as not to be left behind. 01:16:58.230 --> 01:17:03.010 In some places it was hard work to bring the laden horses up the steep slopes. 01:17:03.410 --> 01:17:05.170 The climb went out all night. 01:17:05.390 --> 01:17:10.370 Every reader can imagine how difficult and exhausting it was with little children on 01:17:10.370 --> 01:17:15.250 our back, with young, old and weak all struggling up the high mountainside in the 01:17:15.250 --> 01:17:15.990 dark of night. 01:17:16.250 --> 01:17:23.150 All did their utmost using their last drop of energy without sparing themselves all 01:17:23.150 --> 01:17:27.670 hurried on eager to flee from Babel and the abomination that causes the 01:17:27.670 --> 01:17:28.390 desolation. 01:17:29.370 --> 01:17:31.810 When we reached the crest we halted a little while. 01:17:32.670 --> 01:17:35.930 Then our guides told us that we had already succeeded in crossing over the 01:17:35.930 --> 01:17:39.670 border into Wallachia and were out of danger. 01:17:40.070 --> 01:17:44.090 We could now release the dogs which we had kept them so they wouldn't bark. 01:17:44.990 --> 01:17:48.590 And on the top they held a common prayer and thanked God. 01:17:49.270 --> 01:17:52.950 A little later they found that the government had already actually had beds 01:17:52.950 --> 01:17:56.730 ready for their children that they were about to take and put into the orphanages 01:17:56.730 --> 01:17:57.890 to be made into Catholics. 01:17:59.270 --> 01:18:04.790 So they start here, they keep going, they make it into this area. 01:18:04.930 --> 01:18:09.070 There's an interesting story I don't have to give you, but again how the problems I 01:18:09.070 --> 01:18:12.450 like in the Chronicles where as soon as they get into this Islamic area, 01:18:12.890 --> 01:18:16.370 it was an area that the Muslims had taken over, but they wanted to protect the 01:18:16.370 --> 01:18:17.910 rights of the Orthodox that were there. 01:18:18.490 --> 01:18:22.990 And you couldn't knock over crosses and things like that. 01:18:23.070 --> 01:18:26.870 Well, as soon as they got into town, the Chronicler writes, some boys went out 01:18:26.870 --> 01:18:29.190 and started hacking down some crosses and stuff. 01:18:29.830 --> 01:18:33.090 And he writes in there, and not for religious reasons. 01:18:34.930 --> 01:18:38.990 And so some of the people saw it, turned them in, and there was this great 01:18:38.990 --> 01:18:39.310 offense. 01:18:39.390 --> 01:18:45.270 They had to protect their own Muslim people not to oppress the Greeks and the 01:18:45.270 --> 01:18:47.850 Greek Orthodox people that were there, the Russian Orthodox that were there. 01:18:48.010 --> 01:18:52.130 And so they came under this charge and so they wanted to cut their hands off of the 01:18:52.130 --> 01:18:55.350 boys or give something like $50,000 for each offense. 01:18:55.890 --> 01:18:56.870 And they went back and forth. 01:18:57.150 --> 01:19:01.350 And I appreciate the Chronicler, I think it might have been Johannes 01:19:01.350 --> 01:19:05.730 Waldner, he wrote, I'm telling this so future generations can know not to do 01:19:05.730 --> 01:19:06.850 these kinds of things. 01:19:07.150 --> 01:19:09.350 It's terrible when he tells those kinds of stories. 01:19:10.230 --> 01:19:11.470 It's a blessing. 01:19:12.010 --> 01:19:13.330 So they go through this. 01:19:13.490 --> 01:19:16.530 Again, they fight their way through these different things. 01:19:16.530 --> 01:19:22.190 And now, unfortunately, the Ottoman now wants to take Russia. 01:19:23.590 --> 01:19:27.810 And just when they got from one place of war to another place, now the Ottoman 01:19:27.810 --> 01:19:34.050 Empire is going into Russia and they find themselves in the Turkish war trying to 01:19:34.050 --> 01:19:34.670 take Russia. 01:19:35.430 --> 01:19:38.270 And back and forth there's terrible things. 01:19:38.370 --> 01:19:42.250 They say it's even worse than the other things that were happening to them. 01:19:42.310 --> 01:19:45.270 Some of the things that are so graphic in the Chronicle that I wrote a warning on my 01:19:45.270 --> 01:19:47.190 pages so that my children don't just pick it up. 01:19:47.250 --> 01:19:47.830 It's just terrible. 01:19:48.230 --> 01:19:51.110 Some of the things like they would have these head vices, which would have been a 01:19:51.110 --> 01:19:52.450 nice easy torture device. 01:19:52.550 --> 01:19:58.810 You would just take a strap and turn a stick like that with a strap around your 01:19:58.810 --> 01:20:02.050 head, you know, like you would do a tourniquet and then tell you to recant. 01:20:02.410 --> 01:20:06.490 And then he gives the graphic words on what happened to that person when that's 01:20:06.490 --> 01:20:06.830 happening. 01:20:07.050 --> 01:20:07.710 It's terrible. 01:20:07.710 --> 01:20:15.810 One thing, I'll just read you for the girl's sake, 473, during this time back 01:20:15.810 --> 01:20:23.170 and forth with the Catholics now and the Turks and this whole area, on page 473 01:20:23.170 --> 01:20:25.970 there's an interesting story that girls can appreciate. 01:20:26.930 --> 01:20:27.930 Excuse me, 437. 01:20:37.960 --> 01:20:43.700 One of the robbers had fetched Maria Nagler, a young sister about 15 years old, 01:20:43.780 --> 01:20:45.560 and brought her out to the school and to the yard. 01:20:46.080 --> 01:20:49.920 The godless man tormented her, telling her, make the sign of the cross. 01:20:50.140 --> 01:20:51.340 Meaning, you know, like this. 01:20:51.780 --> 01:20:52.880 Make the sign of the cross. 01:20:56.030 --> 01:20:57.410 Make the sign of the cross. 01:20:57.710 --> 01:20:59.770 She refused point blank to do it. 01:21:00.210 --> 01:21:05.230 The German went up to her and said, my child, he wants you to cross yourself. 01:21:05.450 --> 01:21:07.810 If you refuse, he'll cut off your head. 01:21:08.430 --> 01:21:09.250 Do you understand that? 01:21:10.390 --> 01:21:14.030 She said, I will not do it. 01:21:14.410 --> 01:21:15.570 I would rather die. 01:21:16.150 --> 01:21:21.110 His tormentor drew his sword as if to behead her, but when Maria would not let 01:21:21.110 --> 01:21:26.690 herself be intimidated and was ready to die rather than submit, something in him 01:21:26.690 --> 01:21:29.010 was touched and he left her alone. 01:21:29.490 --> 01:21:34.070 After a while, he looked for her again and wanted to take her with him, but she had 01:21:34.070 --> 01:21:36.390 hidden herself, however, and didn't fall into her hands. 01:21:36.630 --> 01:21:37.010 Yikes! 01:21:38.010 --> 01:21:39.070 That would have been bad. 01:21:39.410 --> 01:21:41.730 But just again to show you some of the tenacity there. 01:21:43.530 --> 01:21:46.650 Again, in the midst of this, they have different times in their history where 01:21:46.650 --> 01:21:48.730 they're trying to get back together, trying to not. 01:21:49.310 --> 01:21:51.230 Real quick in page 508. 01:21:51.370 --> 01:21:55.510 I just want to keep this theme going in page 508. 01:21:59.920 --> 01:22:04.140 Since the situation in Germany provided to be, as we had heard, God filled many 01:22:04.140 --> 01:22:07.340 brothers with courage and great eagerness to send two of their numbers into 01:22:07.340 --> 01:22:11.740 countries that we have mentioned to find out whether there were any zeal and 01:22:11.740 --> 01:22:16.160 longing to learn of God and His truth to change their lives and to save their souls 01:22:16.160 --> 01:22:17.680 from eternal destruction. 01:22:17.820 --> 01:22:21.620 And they went on and began to continue their mission activities. 01:22:22.240 --> 01:22:25.080 Through this time, it got harder. 01:22:25.840 --> 01:22:32.040 They finally got into places where it became disastrous and things again began 01:22:32.040 --> 01:22:37.760 to dwindle and things began to get hard and they eventually found themselves in... 01:22:37.760 --> 01:22:39.980 they found themselves getting into Russia. 01:22:40.600 --> 01:22:50.620 And in Russia, they meet up with the Russian Mennonites, which is interesting, 01:22:50.760 --> 01:22:55.140 which is interesting in it because it's kind of like a full circle. 01:22:59.140 --> 01:23:04.540 As we're taking now the Swiss brethren, they were going from Switzerland over to 01:23:04.540 --> 01:23:09.520 Moravia, now up to Transylvania and finally we get into Russia. 01:23:10.120 --> 01:23:13.720 We're going to pick up next week, we're going to go from Holland into Poland 01:23:13.720 --> 01:23:18.860 and all this and through the Dutch and end up in the same community in Russia. 01:23:19.120 --> 01:23:20.100 And this is where they end up. 01:23:20.140 --> 01:23:24.540 They actually end up with the Russian Mennonites and essentially become Russian 01:23:24.540 --> 01:23:28.660 Mennonites for a while and again give up community of goods. 01:23:29.260 --> 01:23:30.800 Until it was finally revived. 01:23:33.120 --> 01:23:37.800 It was brought that to America right at a time when Russia was beginning to change 01:23:37.800 --> 01:23:43.560 their desire for their rules about non-resistance. 01:23:43.720 --> 01:23:45.800 First, they had full permission to go up. 01:23:45.820 --> 01:23:47.940 They said no restraints and they came up. 01:23:48.020 --> 01:23:52.320 But when they were there with the Russian Mennonites in these different colonies and 01:23:52.320 --> 01:23:56.160 we're going to talk about next week hopefully, it was... 01:23:56.160 --> 01:24:00.520 they became incredibly prosperous and with that incredible prosperity, there's some 01:24:00.520 --> 01:24:04.260 pretty graphic mistakes said in the Chronicles about the way of life that they 01:24:04.260 --> 01:24:05.000 had experienced. 01:24:05.580 --> 01:24:10.400 And finally some brothers got together and said it can't be like this and they 01:24:10.400 --> 01:24:16.560 decided to bring it back again and regain what they had. 01:24:17.740 --> 01:24:25.400 Those communities was Chortice and Radeva and also another one that they came... and 01:24:25.400 --> 01:24:28.440 was that the community that you said your people came? 01:24:28.700 --> 01:24:29.140 Chortice. 01:24:29.380 --> 01:24:32.780 Okay, that's where these brothers had ended up with. 01:24:34.100 --> 01:24:42.100 And again there's some very honest words in the Chronicles about how they were 01:24:42.100 --> 01:24:43.020 during this time. 01:24:44.220 --> 01:24:47.240 Malochna was another one that they came to. 01:24:48.140 --> 01:24:52.180 But finally there was in their wanting... they would get together. 01:24:52.260 --> 01:24:55.020 There were several talks sometimes about can we have a community? 01:24:55.180 --> 01:24:57.080 The Russians wouldn't let them have community of goods. 01:24:57.180 --> 01:25:01.080 They kept trying to argue back and forth and they were finally able to pull this 01:25:01.080 --> 01:25:04.380 out and they wanted to try to rebuild. 01:25:05.580 --> 01:25:09.060 And again shortly after they did that, they started coming to America. 01:25:09.420 --> 01:25:15.020 Last page and we'll finish up here is on page 6 of this next handout. 01:25:18.460 --> 01:25:21.720 These were then... rebuild again. 01:25:21.840 --> 01:25:25.100 The colonies still didn't practice community of goods but that was about to 01:25:25.100 --> 01:25:25.460 change. 01:25:25.560 --> 01:25:27.680 Michael Waldner was one of the ministers at the time. 01:25:27.780 --> 01:25:31.840 He experienced a dream where the angels instructed him to set up a community after 01:25:31.840 --> 01:25:33.980 the pattern of Jesus and the disciples. 01:25:34.420 --> 01:25:36.600 They began to some prayer groups after this time. 01:25:37.100 --> 01:25:39.160 And after soul searching they realized the answer. 01:25:39.280 --> 01:25:40.960 They would reestablish the community of goods. 01:25:41.460 --> 01:25:45.600 And in 1859 community of goods began again 40 years after it was abandoned. 01:25:46.640 --> 01:25:52.020 It's interesting if you ever read on page 666 in the volume 2, they talk about that 01:25:52.020 --> 01:25:55.360 the early one... they had a wrong emphasis on community. 01:25:55.980 --> 01:26:00.860 And that the emphasis must be on God itself and to let these things to flow. 01:26:00.980 --> 01:26:04.240 And there's some good words there about that. 01:26:04.300 --> 01:26:08.600 Michael Waldner was a blacksmith and so his followers who... the people who 01:26:08.600 --> 01:26:11.080 accepted community of goods were known as a Schmiedleite. 01:26:11.540 --> 01:26:14.960 I guess Schmied is blacksmith in Hutterish. 01:26:14.980 --> 01:26:15.840 Is that right Marcus? 01:26:16.240 --> 01:26:21.180 The next year Darius Walter also established communal living and they lived 01:26:21.180 --> 01:26:24.180 on the other end of the community and they were called the Dariusite. 01:26:24.600 --> 01:26:27.720 And the group who hadn't accepted community of goods lived in the middle and 01:26:27.720 --> 01:26:33.440 both groups immigrated and in a few years each other in the 1870s. 01:26:33.860 --> 01:26:38.320 And then there was another, a teacher and his name and because of a teacher they 01:26:38.320 --> 01:26:40.300 also became the Leralites who came later. 01:26:40.400 --> 01:26:42.840 There was one more group too when they did immigrate to America. 01:26:43.140 --> 01:26:46.900 They were given free lands and free farms and some of them just took up having those 01:26:46.900 --> 01:26:50.700 farms and they became what's known as a Prairielite who didn't quite stay together 01:26:50.700 --> 01:26:52.400 as a people and kind of dwindled. 01:26:54.280 --> 01:26:58.220 So that's... it's incredible people and when we get to America the last week I'm 01:26:58.220 --> 01:27:02.720 going to try to talk about our American experience and just this thing but just... 01:27:02.720 --> 01:27:04.600 I know I'm running late but just one thing I want to say. 01:27:04.880 --> 01:27:08.880 What quick things can we learn from the Hutterites even if you don't like their 01:27:08.880 --> 01:27:10.480 whole way of doing things and that's it. 01:27:10.880 --> 01:27:11.660 Last page. 01:27:12.240 --> 01:27:15.100 The conservative Anabaptist, what can we learn from the Hutterites still to this 01:27:15.100 --> 01:27:15.360 day? 01:27:16.080 --> 01:27:18.520 The idea of working as a brotherhood. 01:27:19.320 --> 01:27:20.480 One I have on there. 01:27:20.580 --> 01:27:22.420 The idea of working as a brotherhood. 01:27:23.360 --> 01:27:27.320 Not just being independent but coming and working your life together and sharing in 01:27:27.320 --> 01:27:28.100 one form or another. 01:27:29.200 --> 01:27:33.160 The Hutterites show this obviously through their history in some wonderful ways. 01:27:33.600 --> 01:27:36.780 The ability to set a direction and execute a vision. 01:27:37.420 --> 01:27:41.440 To do that individuals have to lay down many of their own personal things and be 01:27:41.440 --> 01:27:42.300 able to go forward. 01:27:42.400 --> 01:27:44.480 You can see in their heyday they did that beautifully. 01:27:45.220 --> 01:27:47.360 The concept of sharing material blessings. 01:27:47.940 --> 01:27:50.280 In one fashion or another I think this is very important. 01:27:50.440 --> 01:27:51.640 It's part of the teachings of Christ. 01:27:52.000 --> 01:27:56.720 And again I see this in all true expressions of Anabaptist churches and I 01:27:56.720 --> 01:27:58.780 think that's something that we can learn from them as well. 01:27:59.360 --> 01:28:04.760 And four, particularly with the beginning, is a zeal to spread the kingdom of God. 01:28:05.140 --> 01:28:08.500 The one thing that I wanted, the burden of the whole two days was to see that there 01:28:08.500 --> 01:28:10.520 seemed to be something in the Swiss brethren. 01:28:11.000 --> 01:28:15.260 There seemed to be something in the spirit that started with Conrad Grebel and Mons 01:28:15.260 --> 01:28:17.780 and all that in Zurich and it spread to all these places. 01:28:18.120 --> 01:28:23.340 Is there's just this passion within them that won't rest until this expresses 01:28:23.340 --> 01:28:26.300 itself in spreading Christ's kingdom to the world. 01:28:26.980 --> 01:28:31.360 And there was a balance between not just doing that and not existing, but they had 01:28:31.360 --> 01:28:35.960 the discipleship of a church community, a church brotherhood, but also the same 01:28:35.960 --> 01:28:38.380 burden to share that and spread that to the world. 01:28:38.840 --> 01:28:42.880 And they didn't seem to be at odds as much as we tend to get to in these days. 01:28:43.160 --> 01:28:44.820 So, that's the Hutterites. 01:28:46.240 --> 01:28:51.160 We're going to try to pick up, there'll be a test Monday and then just 01:28:51.160 --> 01:28:57.580 the four have to come and then after that we're going to try to go to Holland and 01:28:57.580 --> 01:29:03.180 through Münster and then follow the Dutch brothers all the way to Russia and see 01:29:03.180 --> 01:29:07.320 kind of an interesting progress as well of the Russian Mennonites making it. 01:29:07.520 --> 01:29:12.240 And then the last week I'm going to hope to bring these people to America and then 01:29:12.240 --> 01:29:16.560 we can talk about some of our personal experiences and the things that we can 01:29:16.560 --> 01:29:21.580 learn and maybe see things that are a little closer to home and I'll let you 01:29:21.580 --> 01:29:24.420 talk about some of your histories and things as well. 01:29:24.580 --> 01:29:26.260 So, let's close with a quick word of prayer. 01:29:27.580 --> 01:29:31.340 Dear Lord, again we thank you for this example and we pray God that you would 01:29:31.340 --> 01:29:36.680 raise up again today a people that would be zealous to follow you in this way. 01:29:38.060 --> 01:29:44.460 Oh God, may we not get off balance but look at Jesus and Jesus alone and allow 01:29:44.460 --> 01:29:48.380 you to be real and alive and working in your church. 01:29:48.500 --> 01:29:49.160 We thank you Father. 01:29:49.280 --> 01:29:51.240 It's only by the Holy Spirit we can do this. 01:29:51.500 --> 01:29:52.580 It's in Jesus' name we pray. 01:29:52.740 --> 01:29:53.060 Amen.
