WEBVTT 00:00.160 --> 00:04.680 Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of ATP, Ask the Pastor. 00:04.820 --> 00:09.980 I am still Pastor Joshua Sullivan at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kerrville, 00:10.120 --> 00:10.480 Texas. 00:11.580 --> 00:17.560 Today's question, Dear Pastor Sullivan, why or why not is the papacy still the 00:17.560 --> 00:18.280 Antichrist? 00:19.620 --> 00:21.780 Alright, this is always a fun topic to talk about. 00:22.560 --> 00:28.900 The term Antichrist in popular usage is used in the wrong way. 00:28.900 --> 00:34.140 My experience with this, typically today when people mention the Antichrist, 00:34.240 --> 00:39.980 they're usually talking about a being of pure and unadulterated evil with no 00:39.980 --> 00:43.300 religious connotations at all, with no relationship to the church. 00:43.560 --> 00:49.040 So it's not uncommon for people to label their least favorite politician as the 00:49.040 --> 00:49.640 Antichrist. 00:50.260 --> 00:54.160 But right off the get-go, we have to say this isn't what Scripture is talking about 00:54.160 --> 00:57.580 when it teaches about the Antichrist. 00:58.900 --> 01:01.180 The Scriptures are actually pretty clear about this. 01:01.300 --> 01:06.240 So if we go to 1 John 2 verse 18, St. John writes, Little children, 01:06.760 --> 01:11.180 it is the last hour, and you have heard that the Antichrist is coming. 01:11.700 --> 01:17.400 Even now many Antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. 01:18.120 --> 01:23.920 So John says that there is the Antichrist who is coming, but there are also many 01:23.920 --> 01:24.920 Antichrists. 01:25.160 --> 01:27.660 He says something similar in 1 John 4 verse 3. 01:27.660 --> 01:32.540 He says, Every spirit that does not confess that Jesus has come in the flesh 01:32.540 --> 01:36.740 is not of God, and this is the spirit of the Antichrist. 01:37.320 --> 01:42.080 Now what he means there, what he's saying is that all the heretics, whether they 01:42.080 --> 01:48.640 deny Christ as the Son of God in the Incarnation, or if they deny the effects 01:48.640 --> 01:53.460 of the Incarnation, they are Antichrists because they're teaching contrary to 01:53.460 --> 01:56.300 Christ either in his person or in his work. 01:57.220 --> 02:01.740 Now, while there are many Antichrists, and everyone who is a heretic then has the 02:01.740 --> 02:06.760 spirit of Antichrist, the scripture also teaches, as we saw there in 1 John 2 verse 02:06.760 --> 02:09.860 18, that there is one preeminent Antichrist. 02:10.600 --> 02:13.900 Now he's not a political ruler as much as some people would like him to be. 02:14.200 --> 02:16.880 Rather, he's a ruler of the church. 02:17.580 --> 02:25.000 So if we look at 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, St. Paul writes that the Antichrist, 02:25.140 --> 02:29.800 now this is in verse 4, he opposes and exalts himself above all that is called 02:29.800 --> 02:36.200 God or that is worshiped so that he sits in the temple of, excuse me, as God in the 02:36.200 --> 02:39.260 temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 02:39.820 --> 02:41.840 Now, two main points can be drawn out from this. 02:42.380 --> 02:48.120 First, the Antichrist has set himself up in the place of God and opposes God. 02:48.300 --> 02:49.200 We'll get to that in a moment. 02:49.740 --> 02:53.340 The second, and to what we're dealing with here at first, the Antichrist is someone 02:53.340 --> 02:57.980 who then will rule in the church as he, Paul says, sits in the temple of God. 02:58.300 --> 03:00.140 Now, let's get back to that first point. 03:00.480 --> 03:04.900 How does one oppose God and exalt himself above all that is called God or that is 03:04.900 --> 03:05.360 worshiped? 03:05.920 --> 03:10.880 Well, by teaching doctrines that are contrary to Christ, that are contrary to 03:10.880 --> 03:16.160 the gospel, and in doing so, assuming divine authority for oneself. 03:16.800 --> 03:21.040 So to be Antichrist is to be set against the gospel, to be set against Christ, 03:21.800 --> 03:26.940 and demonstrating this by teaching doctrines which detract from who Christ is 03:26.940 --> 03:30.300 or, more specifically, from what he does, from his saving work. 03:31.040 --> 03:36.100 And generally then, you do that by substituting human works in the place of 03:36.100 --> 03:39.140 the work of Christ's merits and atoning work upon the cross. 03:39.760 --> 03:45.700 Now, it's all of these things that led the Lutheran reformers to identify the papacy 03:45.700 --> 03:48.080 of the Roman church as the Antichrist. 03:48.640 --> 03:50.740 And there are several reasons for doing so. 03:50.880 --> 03:52.380 Let's walk these out a little bit. 03:53.140 --> 03:56.360 So why did the Lutheran reformers think that the Pope was the Antichrist? 03:56.440 --> 04:01.260 Well, first, the Pope claims to rule all Christianity by divine right. 04:01.360 --> 04:05.840 By that, I mean that the Pope claims that according to scripture, according to what 04:05.840 --> 04:08.620 God has told us, he rules the entire church. 04:08.840 --> 04:10.400 All churches, all ministers. 04:10.900 --> 04:15.020 The thing is, there's no word of God anywhere in the scriptures that 04:15.020 --> 04:19.360 establishes the Bishop of Rome as the supreme ruler of the church. 04:19.700 --> 04:24.820 Now, the papacy's chief proof text for this, which is Matthew 16-18, doesn't 04:24.820 --> 04:26.640 specifically speak to this at all. 04:26.700 --> 04:30.540 In fact, if you've got more questions about that, I've dealt with that topic 04:30.540 --> 04:36.420 specifically in another ATP video entitled Does Jesus Establish the Papacy in Matthew 04:36.420 --> 04:37.480 16-18. 04:37.480 --> 04:40.420 So I highly recommend checking that video out as well. 04:40.760 --> 04:43.040 Now, in fact, it's quite the opposite. 04:43.460 --> 04:47.380 Throughout the New Testament scriptures, what we see is the equality of ministers 04:47.380 --> 04:50.300 and churches by divine right. 04:50.720 --> 04:52.160 Now, so that's the first thing. 04:52.240 --> 04:56.300 He puts himself by human right over all churches and all ministers. 04:56.680 --> 05:00.940 Second, the papacy's doctrine is one that's contrary to the gospel, 05:01.720 --> 05:05.360 that it leads men away from Christ and faith in Christ. 05:05.360 --> 05:09.020 Now, that's a pretty bold claim, but we can back this up. 05:09.100 --> 05:10.240 We can give you a couple examples. 05:10.980 --> 05:18.680 So first, the papacy reserves the right to change Christ's doctrine by adding to it 05:18.680 --> 05:19.700 or reinterpreting it. 05:20.260 --> 05:23.240 And by doing so, he's putting himself above the scriptures. 05:23.880 --> 05:27.520 Again, I've got to recommend another ATP video we've done called Scripture and 05:27.520 --> 05:28.000 Tradition. 05:28.660 --> 05:31.780 In that video, I give a full treatment of how the Roman Catholic doctrine isn't 05:31.780 --> 05:38.180 based on scripture, but mostly man's doctrine, false opinions. 05:38.920 --> 05:42.720 And then the papacy turns around and binds men's consciences to these false 05:42.720 --> 05:43.780 pronouncements then. 05:44.480 --> 05:46.600 So go ahead and check out that video, Scripture and Tradition. 05:47.200 --> 05:53.100 The papacy also sets itself against God's word in that he sets himself up as God by 05:53.100 --> 05:54.920 refusing to be subject to anyone else. 05:55.400 --> 05:57.400 And so papal authority cannot be questioned. 05:58.180 --> 06:02.020 The pope's doctrine cannot be judged by councils, by ministers, most of all, 06:02.160 --> 06:04.140 most importantly, by the word of God. 06:04.620 --> 06:09.640 So when a bishop refuses to be judged by the word of God, at that point, 06:09.720 --> 06:11.060 he's made himself God. 06:11.600 --> 06:15.640 And that's specifically what Paul's talking about in 2 Thessalonians 2, 06:15.940 --> 06:16.580 verse 4. 06:17.120 --> 06:19.180 There are some other ways, though, that the pope does this. 06:19.700 --> 06:23.960 Another way the pope subverts the gospel is by teaching people to pray to the 06:23.960 --> 06:25.420 saints rather than to Christ. 06:25.940 --> 06:27.440 Saints, the Virgin Mary, etc. 06:27.820 --> 06:30.520 Instead of Christ or alongside of their prayers to Christ. 06:31.020 --> 06:35.380 And so invoking the saints for help and for aid is ultimately idolatry. 06:36.160 --> 06:40.160 St. Paul says in 1 Timothy 2 that there's one mediator between God and man, 06:40.600 --> 06:43.320 the man Jesus Christ, who gave himself as a ransom for all. 06:43.840 --> 06:47.980 1 John 2, verse 1, If anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, 06:48.400 --> 06:50.100 Jesus Christ, the righteous one. 06:50.600 --> 06:55.160 Now, Rome does teach officially in her catechism that Christ is the only mediator 06:55.160 --> 07:01.540 between God and But by simultaneously teaching the people to flee to the saints 07:01.540 --> 07:06.140 and to the Virgin Mary in times of trouble with their prayers, they're leading people 07:06.140 --> 07:06.980 away from Christ. 07:07.900 --> 07:12.480 Now, another blatant example of how the papacy teaches contrary to the scripture 07:12.480 --> 07:17.060 would be to compare papal doctrine, some of the ones which people are most 07:17.060 --> 07:21.780 familiar with, with what St. Paul says in 1 Timothy 4, verses 1 through 3. 07:21.780 --> 07:26.380 There, Paul says that in the latter times, some will preach a doctrine of demons. 07:27.220 --> 07:30.660 Specifically, they'll forbid marriage, and they will preach abstinence from 07:30.660 --> 07:32.040 certain foods on certain days. 07:33.100 --> 07:34.560 And so where do we see this? 07:34.640 --> 07:39.040 Well, we see this precisely in the Roman church that forbids marriage to her clergy 07:39.040 --> 07:44.300 and prohibits certain foods on certain days during certain times of the year. 07:44.500 --> 07:49.080 St. Paul calls this a doctrine of demons, because you're ultimately doing something 07:49.080 --> 07:55.480 for the sake of meriting favor before God and the church rather than faith in 07:55.480 --> 07:58.340 Christ's merits as that which saves and grants God's favor then. 07:58.680 --> 08:02.480 Now, in all of this, the most egregious error by which the papacy opposes Christ 08:02.480 --> 08:05.260 in the gospel is what it does with justification. 08:06.060 --> 08:10.360 The papacy teaches men to trust in their own works and merits in fasts, 08:10.580 --> 08:12.520 pilgrimages, rosaries, and things like that. 08:13.060 --> 08:16.860 If those things are done with the right intention, Rome teaches, then people merit 08:16.860 --> 08:17.640 grace by them. 08:18.160 --> 08:21.380 Along with this goes the mass, the Roman mass. 08:22.340 --> 08:27.040 They teach that the mass is an unbloody re-sacrificing of Christ upon the altar at 08:27.040 --> 08:32.060 each mass, and that those merits that are earned there can be applied either to the 08:32.060 --> 08:35.980 living who are present at the mass or to the dead in purgatory. 08:36.820 --> 08:40.820 Again, it's this sort of thing that demonstrates that the papacy is leading 08:40.820 --> 08:44.540 men not to faith in Christ, but to their own works and to their own merits. 08:44.940 --> 08:47.700 Even then, it's through the invention of purgatory, which doesn't come from 08:47.700 --> 08:51.260 Scripture, but comes from Plato, that the Pope claims authority over men's 08:51.260 --> 08:52.360 souls even after death. 08:52.680 --> 08:56.880 And in all of these things put together, we see that all of this contradicts the 08:56.880 --> 09:01.300 scriptural gospel that men are justified solely by faith in Christ, and not by 09:01.300 --> 09:03.480 faith in a combination of human works. 09:04.240 --> 09:08.840 Now, so far, I actually haven't answered your question yet of, is the papacy still 09:08.840 --> 09:09.700 the antichrist? 09:10.500 --> 09:15.400 And the answer to that is to look at the papistic doctrine of today and say, 09:15.440 --> 09:16.700 has anything changed? 09:17.160 --> 09:18.440 And the answer is really no. 09:19.080 --> 09:23.540 Some people are going to cite the Vatican II Council as an example of changing Roman 09:23.540 --> 09:27.860 beliefs, but if you read through the documents of Vatican II, what you see is 09:27.860 --> 09:29.920 that Vatican II really changed nothing. 09:30.140 --> 09:33.340 It was cosmetic changes for the Roman Church. 09:34.060 --> 09:38.280 It changed the Church's posture towards the unbelieving world, if anything. 09:39.400 --> 09:43.640 The Roman Church still believes what it does about the papacy and about the 09:43.640 --> 09:48.440 doctrines that we've mentioned here, and in some ways it still behaves as it 09:48.440 --> 09:49.880 did during the time of the Reformation. 09:50.900 --> 09:55.440 The long and short of it is, the papacy puts doctrines in front of people to 09:55.440 --> 09:58.660 believe, which are not Christian, which are not biblical, and in doing so, 09:58.680 --> 10:02.640 it leads men away from Christ, away from trusting Christ alone for their 10:02.640 --> 10:08.620 salvation, and teaches them to place their faith in themselves and their works. 10:09.500 --> 10:12.120 Does that mean the papacy is still the Antichrist? 10:12.800 --> 10:13.560 You betcha. 10:14.000 --> 10:17.260 Now, if you want to do some more research on this, I would highly recommend you go 10:17.260 --> 10:17.880 to two places. 10:18.140 --> 10:21.160 The first is the Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope. 10:21.420 --> 10:22.960 This is by Philip Melanchthon. 10:23.080 --> 10:25.860 It's one of the confessional documents of the Lutheran Church. 10:25.920 --> 10:27.800 You can find it in the Book of Concord. 10:28.440 --> 10:32.000 Also, then, I would highly recommend two books against the papacy. 10:32.360 --> 10:35.220 It's by Nicholas Junius and Balthasar Meissner. 10:35.420 --> 10:37.680 You can get this also from Repristination Press. 10:38.080 --> 10:43.440 I'd highly recommend that as they tackle this issue of the papacy, papal doctrine, 10:44.000 --> 10:46.860 and the Antichrist, and they do it quite succinctly and quite well. 10:47.080 --> 10:47.820 Thanks for the question. 10:48.200 --> 10:50.060 We'll see you next time on Ask the Pastor.
