Bible-believing 03:01.790 --> 03:05.030 Christians because they refused to compromise their faith. 03:05.030 --> 03:12.450 The Holocaust, which was an unspeakable event in terms of its horror and suffering 03:12.450 --> 03:19.090 against the Jewish people, in which six million people were put to death, 03:19.510 --> 03:20.710 literally liquidated. 03:21.590 --> 03:30.630 The Inquisition, which is a term much forgotten or not known to most people, 03:30.750 --> 03:36.690 certainly the younger generations, occupied a much, much longer period, 03:37.090 --> 03:48.470 more than six centuries of, again, unspeakable torture and slaughter of not 03:48.470 --> 03:56.570 only Bible-believing Christians and Jews, but also Muslims, Knights Templars, 03:57.190 --> 04:00.290 and those which they called witches. 04:01.290 --> 04:09.550 It involved tens of millions of people, possibly as many as 50 million, 04:10.730 --> 04:14.910 according to reputable and trustworthy historians. 04:15.870 --> 04:19.590 Many people were not even aware of the term Inquisition. 04:20.090 --> 04:30.030 It is that period of 605 years where the Church of Rome, in a methodical, 04:30.330 --> 04:39.010 organized way, tortured Bible-believers and others so that they would give up 04:39.010 --> 04:47.170 their faith and trust in Mother Church and not submit to a personal faith in Christ 04:47.170 --> 04:49.010 Jesus alone by His grace. 04:49.330 --> 04:53.150 The Roman Catholic Church began the practice of suppressing heresy long before 04:53.150 --> 04:53.950 the 12th century. 04:54.670 --> 04:58.450 To the Roman Church, anything that did not agree with their system of religion was a 04:58.450 --> 05:00.050 heresy and must be suppressed. 05:00.050 --> 05:04.390 However, before the 12th century, those so-called heretics were typically 05:04.390 --> 05:08.610 individual street preachers or small groups of Bible-believers meeting together 05:08.610 --> 05:11.390 in various locations and scattered throughout the land. 05:12.030 --> 05:15.630 Consequently, the Church had no structured system for the suppression of heresy. 05:16.070 --> 05:18.250 The process was sporadic and slow. 05:18.850 --> 05:22.490 There was no real pattern or standard method for dealing with the heresy or the 05:22.490 --> 05:24.970 heretics, but that was about to change. 05:26.290 --> 05:30.490 In the 12th century, a phenomenon occurred, the likes of which the Catholic 05:30.490 --> 05:32.290 Church had not dealt with in the past. 05:32.910 --> 05:36.050 In southern France, scores of people were becoming Bible-believers. 05:36.630 --> 05:39.650 Groups like the Albigensians were rapidly spreading throughout the region. 05:40.350 --> 05:43.970 This heresy, as the Roman Catholic Church called it, was growing at an alarming 05:43.970 --> 05:44.310 rate. 05:44.950 --> 05:49.350 If the Catholic Church was going to suppress this heresy, it clearly needed a 05:49.350 --> 05:52.490 new and systematic method of dealing with heretics. 05:53.410 --> 05:56.590 That new method came with Pope Innocent III. 05:57.390 --> 06:01.450 With the army of the Crusades at his disposal, and offering land to all who 06:01.450 --> 06:05.270 would come and fight this heretical movement in southern France, Innocent III 06:05.270 --> 06:09.670 was determined to suppress this growing menace of Bible-believers, and he would 06:09.670 --> 06:11.730 begin with the Albigensians. 06:12.790 --> 06:19.170 The Inquisition actually, if we wanted to put a date on it, began in France. 06:19.730 --> 06:24.050 An interesting group of people called the Albigensians. 06:24.050 --> 06:29.410 The Albigensians were a remarkable people, and a remarkable civilization, 06:29.970 --> 06:35.450 culture, and moral, and good standing, and good lives. 06:36.490 --> 06:46.370 They had cultivated a wonderful agricultural life based on the biblical 06:46.370 --> 06:47.130 principles. 06:47.130 --> 06:53.110 And they had many cities across France. 06:53.730 --> 06:56.910 Albi is one of the cities even there to this day. 06:57.390 --> 07:02.950 Of course, it's not Bible-believing anymore, because the way in which they 07:02.950 --> 07:13.050 were obliterated was in brutal torture and the loss of life. 07:13.050 --> 07:20.450 And this was really the beginning of the Inquisition, under the Pope called 07:20.450 --> 07:21.410 Innocent III. 07:21.830 --> 07:33.110 He was the one who, building on the legal rights of Rome, to be not just a religious 07:33.110 --> 07:37.590 power, but a civil power, going back to such as Hildebrand and the famous Gregory 07:37.590 --> 07:47.190 VII, he brought the papal power to a zenith or a climax, when he turned what 07:47.190 --> 07:52.410 had been the armies of the Crusades, now against Bible-believers. 07:53.490 --> 07:59.050 And it wasn't just that their cities were devastated and overrun with blood, 07:59.330 --> 08:01.050 and they lost their lives. 08:01.890 --> 08:06.570 And the actual fall of some of these cities, and historians like Wiley, 08:06.930 --> 08:11.030 is a really difficult history to read. 08:11.710 --> 08:15.990 But their very name has been tarnished. 08:17.010 --> 08:24.250 The Roman Catholics make out as if they were somehow mannequins holding for a 08:24.250 --> 08:26.530 dualism between body and the flesh. 08:26.530 --> 08:33.590 Where in actual fact, you can trace their origins back, most likely to the 08:33.590 --> 08:39.490 politicians, who were those who went back to the faith of Paul, as it is written in 08:39.490 --> 08:39.970 the scripture. 08:40.550 --> 08:48.370 And when you see how remarkable their lives were, and the authenticity of their 08:48.370 --> 08:53.290 lives, and the morality of their lives, obviously they believed in the true gospel 08:53.290 --> 08:55.390 of Christ Jesus, and not in the dualism. 08:55.390 --> 09:02.570 But it's not just that their cities were wiped out, but even the very history has 09:02.570 --> 09:04.610 been darkened, as it were. 09:04.910 --> 09:08.750 This suppression was not limited to the Albigenses or to southern France. 09:09.410 --> 09:13.190 The powerful arm of the Pope reached into other nations and regions where the 09:13.190 --> 09:14.410 Catholic Church had a presence. 09:14.970 --> 09:18.670 Other groups like the Vaudois or Waldensians also suffered terrible 09:18.670 --> 09:20.010 persecution for their faith. 09:20.010 --> 09:26.390 The Vaudois are an interesting group of believers because they go right back to 09:26.390 --> 09:33.270 apostolic times, and to the writings of the apostles in the New Testament, 09:33.530 --> 09:35.370 of course, to the Old Testament scriptures. 09:35.630 --> 09:41.610 And they had a great love for the scripture as the truth, and they believed 09:41.610 --> 09:47.010 in Christ Jesus alone, by faith alone, and grace alone. 09:47.010 --> 09:54.570 We have wonderful accounts of these by believers such as John Paul Perrin, 09:54.830 --> 10:01.090 his book on the Vaudois, and Alex, Peter Alex, and many others. 10:01.350 --> 10:09.250 It is wonderful to see the faith of these men and women, and to know that they stood 10:09.250 --> 10:10.090 strongly. 10:10.090 --> 10:17.050 The Piedmont Valley, this was one of the valleys that was overrun at different 10:17.050 --> 10:26.710 times by the troops that were sent out to slaughter and massacre the believers in 10:26.710 --> 10:27.730 these valleys. 10:27.730 --> 10:32.130 That's where they got their name from, Vaudois, from the name Valley, 10:32.630 --> 10:39.530 the Valley people in northern Italy and in southern France. 10:39.890 --> 10:44.170 Thus began the development of a structured method of dealing with heresy and heretics 10:44.170 --> 10:45.430 wherever it might be found. 10:45.990 --> 10:50.130 Councils of bishops and archbishops acting under the authority of the Pope became 10:50.130 --> 10:53.850 known as the Holy Office of Inquisition into Heretical Wickedness. 10:53.850 --> 10:58.850 The method that Innocent III began was continued by successive popes as they 10:58.850 --> 11:03.410 devised more horrific means and methods to try and suppress those who disagreed with 11:03.410 --> 11:04.510 the Roman Catholic Church. 11:05.350 --> 11:15.450 Innocent IV was the one who brought in the actual details of how torture was to be 11:15.450 --> 11:15.670 done. 11:15.670 --> 11:22.970 There was a pope who devised these tortures and it was going to be 75 popes 11:22.970 --> 11:29.670 in a row that added to these different types of tortures. 11:30.570 --> 11:34.310 Several reputable historians have commented on the Roman Catholic atrocities 11:34.310 --> 11:38.530 during the Inquisition and even the Roman Catholic historians speak about the 11:38.530 --> 11:39.730 horrors of the Inquisition. 11:39.730 --> 11:41.530 Men like Peter de Rosa. 11:42.010 --> 11:50.770 Peter de Rosa wrote a book, the Vicars of Christ book, The Dark Side of the Papacy 11:50.770 --> 11:52.150 was the other title for it. 11:52.570 --> 11:59.770 And it speaks of the Pope's presumed primacy reigning over all the Church and 11:59.770 --> 12:01.670 the arrogance of papal power. 12:04.690 --> 12:09.590 John Paul presents the papacy as the champion of truth and the rights of man. 12:10.190 --> 12:13.950 He takes it for granted that popes have never contradicted one another on 12:13.950 --> 12:17.530 essentials or deviated from gospel truth. 12:19.070 --> 12:23.490 History explodes the myth of a papacy lily white in the matter of truth. 12:24.510 --> 12:27.550 In an age of barbarism, the popes led the pack. 12:27.550 --> 12:31.670 In an age of enlightenment, they trailed the field. 12:32.830 --> 12:38.050 And their record was worst when, contrary to the gospel, they tried to 12:38.050 --> 12:40.710 impose their truth by force. 12:42.210 --> 12:49.830 And Peter de Rosa, in a separate part of the book, also wrote of the atrocities of 12:49.830 --> 12:53.750 the torture machine that you just mentioned of the Roman Catholic Church. 12:55.030 --> 12:59.590 He writes, the record of the Inquisition would be embarrassing for any 12:59.590 --> 13:00.210 organisation. 13:01.110 --> 13:03.290 For the Catholic Church, it is devastating. 13:04.670 --> 13:09.730 Today, it prides itself, and with much justification, on being the defender of 13:09.730 --> 13:12.210 natural law and the rights of man. 13:13.370 --> 13:17.090 The papacy in particular likes to see itself as the champion of morality. 13:18.090 --> 13:23.290 What history shows, however, is that for more than these six centuries, 13:24.030 --> 13:30.250 without a break, the papacy was the sworn enemy of elementary justice. 13:30.850 --> 13:36.970 Eighty popes in a line from the 13th century on, not one of them, among them, 13:37.170 --> 13:42.490 disapproved of the theology and apparatus of the Inquisition. 13:42.490 --> 13:49.930 On the contrary, one after another, each added his own cruel touches to the 13:49.930 --> 13:51.890 working of this deadly machine. 13:53.010 --> 13:57.630 That closes the quote from centuries of her murderous rampage. 14:14.150 --> 14:19.250 In the Bible, the Holy Spirit foretold her lust for power and for blood. 14:19.250 --> 14:23.690 And history has recorded some of the gruesome details of that. 14:24.590 --> 14:30.810 And the second Roman Catholic historian that I can quote from is Lord Acton, 14:30.930 --> 14:36.610 who is made famous for his observation, with the mother Roman Catholic Church 14:36.610 --> 14:43.050 firmly in mind, that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. 14:44.410 --> 14:51.790 And he says about the Inquisition that the Inquisition is peculiarly the weapon and 14:51.790 --> 14:54.250 peculiarly the work of the popes. 14:55.010 --> 15:00.010 It stands out from all those things in which they cooperated, followed or 15:00.010 --> 15:03.230 assented as the distinctive feature of papal Rome. 15:04.190 --> 15:10.390 It was set up, renewed and perfected by a long series of acts emanating from the 15:10.390 --> 15:12.250 supreme authority of the church. 15:13.170 --> 15:20.430 No other institution, no doctrine, no teaching, no ceremony is so distinctly 15:20.430 --> 15:25.830 the individual creation of the papacy, except the dispensing power. 15:26.970 --> 15:33.290 It's the principle thing with which the papacy is identified and by which it must 15:33.290 --> 15:34.130 be judged. 15:35.250 --> the principle of the Inquisition is murderous. 15:59.450 --> 16:06.570 And the man's opinion of the papacy is regulated and determined by his opinion of 16:06.570 --> 16:07.990 religious 16:19.010 --> 16:19.750 a humane manner. 16:20.330 --> 16:23.970 They continued to devise more horrific tortures in their attempt to make the 16:23.970 --> 16:27.970 so-called heretics renounce their faith and accept Roman Catholicism. 16:28.650 --> 16:30.110 Things like the Judas Chair. 16:30.110 --> 16:34.550 The Judas Chair was used in the Spanish Inquisition in particular. 16:34.810 --> 16:37.210 It was a pyramid-type seat. 16:37.990 --> 16:48.670 The victim was lowered down on this seat so that the pointed end of the Judas Seat, 16:48.770 --> 16:55.910 which was this pyramid, penetrated the orifices of both male and female so that 16:55.910 --> 16:58.870 they suffered excruciating pain. 16:58.870 --> 17:04.530 And there was hope that they would renounce their biblical faith and proclaim 17:04.530 --> 17:06.550 their faith in Holy Mother Church. 17:06.790 --> 17:09.510 This is just one example. 17:10.150 --> 17:12.370 Other Bible believers were burned at the stake. 17:13.050 --> 17:17.050 Burning at the stake was often carried out in front of a large crowd in an auto-defe, 17:17.190 --> 17:20.150 in occasion of dramatic pomp and festivity. 17:20.150 --> 17:25.930 Those who were burnt at the stake were very often those, of course, who were 17:25.930 --> 17:32.450 called heretics, whose faith and biblical convictions carried the most threat to the 17:32.450 --> 17:33.250 papacy. 17:34.710 --> 17:41.210 And it was almost as if the Roman Church believed that by burning them, 17:41.870 --> 17:46.810 both their bodies and their beliefs would disappear into the cinders together. 17:49.470 --> 17:57.450 And in England, at the time of the English Reformation in the 16th century and during 17:57.450 --> 18:03.690 the reign of Mary Tudor, the eldest daughter of Henry VIII, who became known 18:03.690 --> 18:08.110 as Bloody Mary, she was a fervent Catholic, beholden to the Pope, 18:08.690 --> 18:19.830 who brought in the Inquisition to cause the martyrdom of some 288 Protestant 18:19.830 --> 18:21.550 martyrs in England. 18:22.630 --> 18:30.030 Most of them died because they denied the real presence, the real presence being 18:30.030 --> 18:36.970 Catholic dogma or doctrine or teaching that Jesus Christ is really present, 18:37.790 --> 18:46.170 body, soul, divinity and humanity, in the sacrament. 18:48.330 --> 18:54.150 The burning back-to-back of Bishops Latham and Ridley, which took place in Oxford 18:54.150 --> 19:05.150 outside Balliol College in 1555, is still well known to many people as are 19:05.150 --> 19:13.910 Latham's stirring last words, which were an inspiration for centuries to 19:13.910 --> 19:19.530 Bible-believing Christians in the English-speaking world mainly. 19:20.710 --> 19:25.770 And Bible believer 22:51.200 --> 22:54.360 would submit to the Church of Rome. 22:54.620 --> 22:58.320 Another method of imposing horrific pain to the joints was to raise the victim 22:58.320 --> 22:59.740 toward the ceiling by ropes. 23:00.640 --> 23:04.540 And then with weights tied to the ankles, the victim was dropped almost to the floor 23:04.540 --> 23:08.780 before coming to a jarring smashed and the eyes were squeezed from the socket. 25:58.470 --> 26:03.350 It was hoped that as they were going through this torture that they would 26:03.350 --> 26:07.990 submit and give up their personal faith and believe in the faith in the system, 26:08.510 --> 26:10.090 the system being the Catholic Church. 26:10.530 --> 26:14.850 The Iron Maiden, or Iron Virgin as it was also called, is yet another of the 26:14.850 --> 26:15.930 Inquisition's horrors. 26:15.930 --> 26:21.870 The Iron Virgin, it was a tomb-sized container with folding doors. 26:22.550 --> 26:28.650 And at the touch of a spring, the spiked, studded arms would wrap around the body of 26:28.650 --> 26:38.050 the victim in such a way as to puncture parts of the entire body, including the 26:38.050 --> 26:39.790 eyes and the ears. 26:39.790 --> 26:47.070 And the purpose, obviously, was to inflict pain, but by means of a slow death, 26:47.290 --> 26:51.430 vicious spikes into the body and a slow death. 26:52.210 --> 26:55.830 The Roman Catholic Church learned that they could completely remove the skin from 26:55.830 --> 26:59.230 a person, all the way down to their waist, before the person would die. 26:59.910 --> 27:03.690 They also had several other ways and instruments to tear and mutilate the flesh 27:03.690 --> 27:04.390 of their victims. 27:04.390 --> 27:11.030 Another way of slowly bringing upon death was the different ways that the Catholic 27:11.030 --> 27:15.710 Church used to tear the flesh of men and women, and even children. 27:16.590 --> 27:24.970 These implement a torture of whips and saws and different claws by which they 27:24.970 --> 27:26.430 tore into the human flesh. 27:26.430 --> 27:34.530 It wasn't just that they did this over the body in general, it was often done in 27:34.530 --> 27:40.690 particular on the genitals of men and women, so that they could inflict the 27:40.690 --> 27:48.050 greatest pain at the most sensitive areas of the body, particularly the genital 27:48.050 --> 27:49.590 organs of both sexes. 27:50.290 --> 27:54.690 Sometimes these things were heated to make them even worse. 27:54.690 --> 27:59.450 The Inquisitors also had devised several methods to crush the bones of those who 27:59.450 --> 28:00.410 refused to repent. 28:01.190 --> 28:05.970 Instruments for compressing the fingers till the bones would be squeezed to 28:05.970 knees and elbows. 29:02.370 --> 29:06.110 Another set of instruments were used by the Inquisition to pierce the body, 29:06.430 --> 29:07.810 such as the chair of nails. 29:08.310 --> 29:16.610 This chair of nails was so that the victim would be placed on this and then mallets 29:16.610 --> 29:25.410 would be hit down on it to make sure that the nails really did their work of 29:25.410 --> 29:27.630 puncturing the body with exquisite pain. 29:27.630 --> 29:35.470 And the fire was lit under the chair of nails so that the heresy of trusting in 29:35.470 --> 29:39.810 Christ alone, by faith alone and grace alone, would be given up, or the so-called 29:39.810 --> 29:44.070 heresy that is Biblical faith, and people would trust in Holy Mother 29:44.070 --> 29:44.610 Church. 29:45.410 --> 29:49.750 There were also devices to slowly and painfully remove the intestines and other 29:49.750 --> 29:54.010 organs from the body while keeping the person alive and conscious of the pain. 29:54.850 --> 29:59.730 Any one of those horrors could be inflicted on anybody, man, woman or child, 29:59.850 --> 30:03.610 over the age of 12, that did not agree with the Roman Catholic Church, 30:04.210 --> 30:07.830 and the trials were not conducted in a democratic or fair manner. 30:07.830 --> 30:12.870 Anyone could be arrested by the Inquisition on suspicion. 30:13.890 --> 30:17.970 And then the trial was secret, the prisoner wasn't allowed to know the 30:17.970 --> 30:22.730 accusers or the witnesses, and the judges were the priesthood. 30:22.730 --> 30:29.490 There were ecclesiastics with absolute power and discretion. 30:30.450 --> 30:38.390 The evidence of infamous persons, of criminals, perjurers or heretics was 30:38.390 --> 30:40.170 admitted so long as it was hostile. 30:41.170 --> 30:47.250 When I use the word heretic there, I'm not referring to true believers. 30:48.190 --> 30:52.070 Children from the age of 12 were required to bear testimony. 30:53.490 --> 30:59.910 The prisoner didn't have the help, rather, of an advocate, for anyone 30:59.910 --> 31:04.590 defending a heretic was held guilty of the crime of furthering heresy. 31:06.490 --> 31:12.830 And this, it's worth mentioning, that the Inquisition was consistently 31:12.830 --> 31:19.190 carried out in European countries, France, Germany, Holland, Spain and Italy. 31:19.510 --> 31:23.930 Those people were subjected to horrendous suffering, and yet they continued to be 31:23.930 --> 31:29.050 steadfast in their faith, and were able to derive the strength and courage to face 31:29.050 --> 31:29.990 those atrocities. 31:29.990 --> 31:37.490 Well, it was a wonderful demonstration of the grace and divine power of the Lord 31:37.490 --> 31:44.530 Jesus Christ, in whom they believed so firmly, that carried them through and 31:44.530 --> 31:55.050 enabled them to survive the ordeal, which today we can hardly begin to 31:55.050 --> 31:59.010 contemplate, that we could deal with. 32:00.390 --> 32:04.490 Many of the afflictions of the righteous, and the Lord delivereth them out of them 32:04.490 --> 32:11.130 all, they remembered that the Lord had said in the Gospel, be scriptures proclaimed who the Christ was and who the Antichrist was. 33:11.450 --> 33:18.970 And they were upheld in their faith because they knew that the scriptures had 33:18.970 --> 33:24.590 foretold that these sufferings would come upon believers. 33:24.590 --> 33:30.610 Christ Jesus talked about many Christs coming and we were not to believe in them. 33:30.670 --> 33:32.290 Many people claiming to be the Christ. 33:32.790 --> 33:35.250 Peter talked about many false teachers. 33:35.410 --> 33:42.250 The Apostle Paul talked about wolves coming in the midst of the flock of the 33:42.250 --> 33:42.550 Lord. 33:42.550 --> 33:48.270 And it was always the many and the few who would stand strong. 33:48.450 --> 33:55.270 So they were warned and they took great cognizance of the fact that they were 33:55.270 --> 34:02.510 coming under the woman spoken about in Revelation 17. 34:02.510 --> 34:10.650 They knew that 17 of Revelation said the words, mystery, Babylon the great, 34:10.810 --> 34:16.350 mother of harlots, drunken with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs 34:16.350 --> 34:16.790 of Jesus. 34:16.990 --> 34:20.850 Revelation chapter 17 and verse 6. 34:20.850 --> 34:28.170 They realized that the papal system was the one that was doing these things and 34:28.170 --> 34:32.830 that they were to stand strong in the faith because this was what was 34:32.830 --> 34:33.990 prophesied. 34:33.990 --> 34:40.890 And they saw that she indeed was great because she had brought in princes and 34:40.890 --> 34:49.530 kings and queens to do her work and that she indeed was mystery because she was 34:49.530 --> 34:56.770 proclaiming a message that was unknown to the pages of scripture except that it had 34:56.770 --> 35:00.330 been prophesied that such horrors would come. 35:00.330 --> 35:04.290 An apostasy from the true gospel. 35:05.110 --> 35:10.070 It is sad that many Bible believers of our own day will say that they know who the 35:10.070 --> 35:12.810 Christ is but they do not know who the Antichrist is. 35:13.210 --> 35:18.630 It is proclaimed in 2 Thessalonians 2 as both a system and a person. 35:18.630 --> 35:24.310 The man of sin and the one who would sit in the temple of God calling himself God 35:24.310 --> 35:28.230 and the only one in the pages of history who has done this is the Pope. 35:28.790 --> 35:35.450 To this day the Pope calls himself the Holy Father which is a title of God and he 35:35.450 --> 35:39.530 calls himself the vicar of Christ which is a title of the Holy Spirit. 35:40.190 --> 35:43.510 So he sits in the temple of God calling himself God. 35:43.510 --> 35:49.210 Now the Bible believers saw these things and they saw that it was historically 35:49.210 --> 35:49.810 true. 35:50.550 --> 35:55.750 Unlike many Bible believers of our own day who say they do not know who the 35:55.750 --> 36:01.550 Antichrist is and they are looking for something to come in future times whereby 36:01.550 --> 36:07.150 they will get implanted with a computer chip or something in their brain or some 36:07.150 --> 36:10.390 other of these wild ideas that go around. 36:10.390 --> 36:15.650 Whereby in the pages of scripture we see these things prophesied and we see it 36:15.650 --> 36:16.270 fulfilled. 36:16.550 --> 36:22.670 And a problem for the church today is that we ignore history at our peril. 36:22.670 --> 36:28.750 In those days the cardinals wore scarlet and the bishops purpled and to this day 36:28.750 --> 36:32.370 the Roman church still boasts these two colours. 36:32.370 --> 36:43.170 I remember when I was a priest in Rome in 1963 going into 1964 and I went to Vatican 36:43.170 --> 36:50.110 Council 2 as it was in session and I saw the square filling up with 3000 prelates 36:50.110 --> 36:54.950 pouring into the square after one of the sessions of the council. 36:55.510 --> 37:01.050 And I saw that the colours were scarlet and purple and I was taken aback because 37:01.050 --> 37:06.670 even as a Catholic priest I knew what Revelation said and this was real and this 37:06.670 --> 37:10.730 is the real colours of Rome and this is what was prophesied of her. 37:10.730 --> 37:12.290 And that's only one of the details. 37:12.770 --> 37:14.250 She holds the golden cup. 37:14.750 --> 37:18.770 She is the only system that has dumped the blood of the saints over such a long 37:18.770 --> 37:19.710 period of time. 37:20.450 --> 37:21.550 This is fact. 37:21.770 --> 37:24.510 It is not something that is surmised. 37:24.790 --> 37:27.770 This can be verified on the pages of history. 37:28.390 --> 37:32.630 The Roman Catholic Church today still maintains the canon laws that she used as 37:32.630 --> 37:36.990 her authority to torture and murder Bible believers for over 600 years. 37:36.990 --> 37:41.850 And it is not just that she held these things in the past. 37:42.270 --> 37:50.230 She still holds in the present day teachings that you must submit to her and 37:50.230 --> 37:53.950 she says that she has the right to coerce Christian people. 37:53.950 --> 38:03.430 This is in modern canon law, canon 1311, quotation, the church has an innate and 38:03.430 --> 38:12.110 proper right to coerce offending members of the Christian faithful by means of 38:12.110 --> 38:14.890 papal sanctions, end of quotation. 38:15.650 --> 38:22.810 The Catholic Church also holds to the fact that she can demand a submission of 38:22.810 --> 38:23.750 intellect and will. 38:24.530 --> 38:29.530 Now we know that submission of intellect and will is usually a hallmark of a cult 38:29.530 --> 38:38.290 and we wouldn't expect that the church that holds itself to be a true church 38:38.290 --> 38:43.530 would in any way in its writings hold to this. 38:43.530 --> 38:51.630 But she does in fact, in the famous canon 752, she says the following, quotation, 38:52.250 --> 38:58.490 a religious respect of intellect and will, even if not the assent of faith, 38:58.870 --> 39:06.010 is to be paid to the teaching of the supreme pontiff or college of bishops 39:06.010 --> 39:10.130 enunciate on faith and morals. 39:10.130 --> 39:14.850 Which the supreme pontiff or college of bishops enunciate on faith and morals. 39:15.230 --> 39:21.510 So what the supreme pontiff, the supreme mediator says or his college of bishops on 39:21.510 --> 39:25.350 faith and morals, you have to submit your intellect and will. 39:25.350 --> 39:31.110 And this is the same teaching, it is not upheld with the rigors of the 39:31.110 --> 39:37.750 past or there are no sanctions like the past, but the same mindset is there and I 39:37.750 --> 39:43.990 think that we have to see that and we have to realize that Bible believers were 39:43.990 --> 39:44.350 fortified. 39:44.350 --> 39:51.570 They saw what the apostle Peter said kept by the power of God and they were kept by 39:51.570 --> 39:59.030 the power of God and their faith resounded at that time before the throne of God and 39:59.030 --> 40:04.550 it still resounds on the pages of history for those who dare read the true 40:04.550 --> 40:05.490 historical accounts. 40:06.050 --> 40:10.650 Why would the church that claims to be a humanitarian loving organization continue 40:10.650 --> 40:12.950 to write those canons into her modern law? 40:13.710 --> 40:18.010 Could it be that the Roman Catholic Church is still using those laws and maintaining 40:18.010 --> 40:20.030 that same mindset in our day and age? 40:20.030 --> 40:27.110 It is certainly among the best kept secrets of the history of the 20th century 40:27.110 --> 40:36.530 that an inquisition which was as severe as in previous centuries that we have been 40:36.530 --> 40:42.410 discussing did take place at the time of the Second World War. 40:42.410 --> 40:49.250 Just to give you a little background first, in 1929 Benito Mussolini signed the 40:49.250 --> 40:55.570 Lateran Treaty with the Pope of the time, Pope Pius XI, officially conceding Vatican 40:55.570 --> 40:57.150 Hill to the Pope. 40:57.350 --> 41:00.970 In other words, the Vatican to be set up again as a political entity. 41:00.970 --> 41:06.190 The papacy once again became a sovereign civil state. 41:07.090 --> 41:15.530 The legal agreement with Mussolini was just the beginning of the concordats that 41:15.530 --> 41:21.710 were to be established with many nations, perhaps the most infamous being the one 41:21.710 --> 41:24.830 between Pope Pius XII and Adolf Hitler. 41:26.010 --> 41:33.650 The Vatican formed alliances with the following Roman Catholic dictators, 41:33.770 --> 41:39.670 among others, Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, Francisco Franco in Spain, 41:40.510 --> 41:47.790 Antonio Salazar in Portugal, Juan Perón in Argentina, but the most brutal and 41:47.790 --> 41:53.830 bloodthirsty of all of them was Anton Pavelich in Croatia. 41:54.930 --> 41:59.810 According to a memorandum in the documents of the United States Army's 41:59.810 --> 42:08.750 counterintelligence corps, dated 12th September 1947, agents hunting escaped 42:08.750 --> 42:15.530 Nazi war criminals after World War II purposely avoided capturing one man 42:15.530 --> 42:22.570 because, to quote the document, his contacts are so high and his present 42:22.570 --> 42:28.590 position so compromising to the Vatican that any extradition of the subject would 42:28.590 --> 42:32.030 deal a staggering blow to the Roman Catholic Church. 42:33.390 --> 42:41.370 The man was Anton Pavelich, head of the new nation state of Croatia, carved out of 42:41.370 --> 42:43.310 Yugoslavia during the war. 42:44.310 --> 42:50.690 During Pavelich's four-year reign, he and Roman Catholic prelate Archbishop 42:50.690 --> 43:00.310 Alois Stepinac pursued a convert-or-die policy among the 900,000 approximately 43:00.310 --> 43:05.170 Greek Orthodox Serbs, Jews and others in Croatia. 43:06.170 --> 43:09.230 200,000 were converted. 43:10.530 --> 43:18.770 700,000 who chose to die were tortured, burned, buried alive or shot after digging 43:18.770 --> 43:20.310 their own graves. 43:21.310 --> 43:32.610 This appalling persecution was carried out by the Ustashis, including many of the 43:32.610 --> 43:36.350 worst atrocities of the whole Second World War. 43:36.930 --> 43:41.550 Certainly the mutilations were horrific and the savagery was terrible. 43:42.490 --> 43:48.650 The Catholic Church did not leave the execution of a religious war to the 43:48.650 --> 43:50.450 secular arm on this occasion. 43:51.370 --> 43:57.090 She was there herself, openly ignoring precautions and bolder than she had been 43:57.090 --> 43:58.710 for a very long time. 44:00.090 --> 44:04.110 Wielding the hatchet or dagger, pulling the trigger, organizing the 44:04.110 --> 44:10.730 massacre, the Roman Catholic priesthood became again its own instrument of 44:10.730 --> 44:11.410 inquisition. 44:12.550 --> 44:19.390 Many of the Ustashi officers were priests or friars who were sworn to fight with 44:19.390 --> 44:24.390 dagger or gun for the triumph of Christ and Croatia. 44:25.990 --> 44:31.550 Priests played a prominent role in the closing or takeover of the Serbian 44:31.550 --> 44:37.190 Orthodox churches, the seizure of church records and the interrogation of the 44:37.190 --> 44:39.690 Serbian Orthodox clergy as well. 44:40.770 --> 44:46.930 They also supervised the concentration camps and organized the torture of many of 44:46.930 --> 44:47.430 the victims. 44:48.050 --> 44:50.510 And this is all happening in the 20th century. 44:51.830 --> 44:58.270 French author Edmond Paris, who was born a Roman Catholic, has written a very 44:58.270 --> 45:03.330 thorough account of this terrible massacre in his book Convert or Die. 45:03.970 --> 45:10.270 And he wrote, it's difficult for the world to believe that a whole people could be 45:10.270 --> 45:15.310 doomed to extermination by a government and religious hierarchy of the 20th 45:15.310 --> 45:21.550 century, just because it happened to belong to another ethnical and racial 45:21.550 --> 45:30.030 group and had inherited the Christianity of the Byzantium kind instead of the Roman 45:30.030 --> 45:30.550 kind. 45:32.050 --> 45:40.090 The world does not in fact know and is thus unable to understand fully all this 45:40.090 --> 45:47.270 background in the Second World War to what happened in the Balkan Wars of the 1990s 45:47.270 --> 45:48.450 in Yugoslavia. 45:48.450 --> 45:57.790 After the Vatican, note the Vatican, led Western nations in recognizing Croatia 45:57.790 --> 46:01.350 as an independent sovereign state. 46:02.310 --> 46:07.170 And of course, immediately hostilities broke out between the Croats and the 46:07.170 --> 46:11.830 Serbs, given this background of what took place in the Second World War. 46:15.630 --> 46:22.190 British historian and journalist Andrew Roberts of the Sunday Telegraph expressed 46:22.190 --> 46:24.290 surprise in that newspaper. 46:25.550 --> 46:30.710 He wrote, in the present crisis, almost the entire Western media have 46:30.710 --> 46:33.050 chosen to champion the Croats. 46:34.050 --> 46:41.110 He goes on to ask the question, how are the Serbs expected to react to the 46:41.110 --> 46:47.190 decision to adopt the Ustashe's chequered symbol as the Croatian national flag? 46:48.170 --> 46:54.870 In Krajina, it takes longer than the 45 minute attention span of today's CNN 46:54.870 --> 47:01.150 broadcaster to forget the way Franciscan friars participated in the slaughter of 47:01.150 --> 47:03.970 Serbs in Croatian Bosnia. 47:05.070 --> 47:10.790 Orthodox Serbs were promised protection if they converted to Catholicism, 47:11.510 --> 47:17.070 but were then killed after they entered the churches as the priests looked on. 47:18.910 --> 47:24.130 The attempt during the Second World War to create the entirely Roman Catholic 47:24.130 --> 47:30.250 independent state of Croatia was accompanied by a persecution so ferocious 47:30.250 --> 47:34.350 that it is difficult to find a parallel in all of history. 47:35.510 --> 47:40.690 The Inquisition applied to the Serbian Orthodox by the Croatian Catholics 47:40.690 --> 47:48.570 accounted for 700,000 Serbs tortured and killed in just four years. 47:49.270 --> 47:54.290 And of course, we have that state that they wanted in Croatia now. 47:55.350 --> 47:59.430 In the year 2000, the Pope asked for forgiveness for the part that the members 47:59.430 --> 48:01.170 of the church played in the Inquisition. 48:01.170 --> 48:02.630 I remember the time well. 48:02.770 --> 48:05.330 It was March in the year 2000. 48:06.050 --> 48:14.030 The Pope asked for forgiveness for the acts of the members of the church that 48:14.030 --> 48:16.090 they had done in the service of truth. 48:16.870 --> 48:22.430 Now, it wasn't the members of the church or individual members of the church who 48:22.430 --> 48:23.550 did these things. 48:23.690 --> 48:27.440 It was the papacy itself and the Popes in particular. 48:29.700 --> 48:34.660 Peter de Rosa had said 80 Popes in a row. 48:35.140 --> 48:42.240 In my study of going through one after another of Popes in the past, as I have 48:42.240 --> 48:49.860 studied history, I have seen that I can document at least 75 Popes in a row who 48:49.860 --> 48:51.840 have upheld torture. 48:52.700 --> 48:55.520 And this is historical fact. 48:55.720 --> 49:01.160 It was the Popes that gave the authority, as we saw. 49:01.380 --> 49:06.820 Lord Acton said it was primarily an institution of papal Rome. 49:06.820 --> 49:14.140 Even under Isabel and Ferdinand in Spain, under the famous Spanish Inquisition, 49:14.820 --> 49:22.500 it was still under the papal inquisitors that the authority came and that the 49:22.500 --> 49:27.160 devices of the tortures were given by papal Rome. 49:27.160 --> 49:36.980 So, for the Pope to apologize that it was somehow members of the church, 49:37.200 --> 49:47.180 this is a total mock apology because it was papal Rome that did the horrific deeds 49:47.180 --> 49:51.520 for all these centuries and papal Rome has not apologized. 49:52.520 --> 49:59.820 And the same remains and the same doctrines that they held then, 50:00.220 --> 50:01.060 they hold today. 50:01.460 --> 50:07.460 They hold through salvation, through sacramental system, as they did at the 50:07.460 --> 50:14.980 time of the Inquisition, and they still hold to a type of sacramentalism by which 50:14.980 --> 50:18.900 a person looks to the communion bread that it can sanctify you. 50:18.900 --> 50:23.200 It is not any physical thing that sanctifies. 50:23.780 --> 50:28.880 It is the righteousness of Christ Jesus received by faith under the conviction of 50:28.880 --> 50:32.160 the Holy Spirit by which a person becomes a Bible believer. 50:32.580 --> 50:36.040 As the Roman Catholic Church continues to embrace the increasingly popular 50:36.040 --> 50:39.960 ecumenical movement across the world, it would be wise for all of us, 50:40.040 --> 50:44.240 and especially Bible believers, to remember the lessons of history and to 50:44.240 --> 50:45.940 remain steadfast in our faith. 50:45.940 --> 50:50.880 Now, what happened to the faith of believers at this time? 50:51.440 --> 50:54.160 The faith of believers stood strong. 50:54.800 --> 51:00.880 They knew that Christ Jesus had said that he would be with them. 51:00.880 --> 51:07.540 They knew that Christ Jesus promised to be with them all days, even until the end of 51:07.540 --> 51:08.060 the world. 51:08.400 --> 51:14.260 They knew that Christ Jesus was with them and the power of the Holy Spirit that they 51:14.260 --> 51:18.700 could withstand the suffering that they were going through. 51:18.700 --> 51:26.540 It is not just that Christ Jesus, who is the judge of all, will finally one 51:26.540 --> 51:33.320 day judge them that he will, and he will bring into light all the horrors of the 51:33.320 --> 51:41.560 past, but Christ Jesus was, even in those years, triumphing in the gospel and in the 51:41.560 --> 51:47.340 glorious faith of these men and women, and sometimes even children, suffering for 51:47.340 --> 51:47.840 their faith. 51:47.840 --> 51:52.500 They died because of their faith in Christ alone. 51:52.960 --> 52:02.760 They trusted in Christ alone and in his glorious gospel alone, and they withstood 52:02.760 --> 52:07.840 the torture to die for the true faith. 52:07.840 --> 52:15.000 And in that way, Christ Jesus was gloriously reigning, as it says in Psalm 52:15.000 --> 52:25.720 2, and he was holding in derision those who would try to break apart his kingdom. 52:26.140 --> 52:30.640 He held them in derision and they were triumphant even then. 52:30.640 --> 52:37.660 Look at the same Christ Jesus who, at the cross, suffered the most 52:37.660 --> 52:40.720 ignominious death one could ever imagine. 52:41.480 --> 52:45.860 And what looked to be the greatest of all failures turned out to be the greatest 52:45.860 --> 52:55.100 triumph in his sacrifice in the place of believers and his righteousness credited 52:55.100 --> 52:55.780 to them. 52:55.780 --> 53:02.920 And in the same way, through all those horrible years, he was triumphing in the 53:02.920 --> 53:04.060 faith of believers. 53:05.100 --> 53:08.540 Now, Rome has not just given up. 53:08.660 --> 53:13.000 She has given up, actually, the physical tortures, but she still has the same 53:13.000 --> 53:18.480 mindset as we gave from some of her canon laws of the present day. 53:19.360 --> 53:25.580 And she still draws many onto a bosom, but we are not to be afraid. 53:26.060 --> 53:28.140 Christ Jesus talked about the little flock. 53:29.000 --> 53:35.100 He told us that there would be few that would stand, but they would stand by his 53:35.100 --> 53:35.700 power. 53:35.700 --> 53:41.320 And so, we know the true gospel is not numerical. 53:42.040 --> 53:49.160 It is brilliantly true that Christ Jesus has given his life, the one for the many, 53:49.980 --> 53:52.220 as you trust on him and him alone. 53:52.220 --> 53:59.940 It is to look to Christ Jesus and him alone for faith and recognize that you are 53:59.940 --> 54:06.520 destitute of anything spiritually and to trust on him and to share in that same 54:06.520 --> 54:12.280 victory of faith that was demonstrated through all those years before the throne 54:12.280 --> 54:14.780 of God and will be seen for all eternity. 54:14.780 --> 54:19.520 We need to remember that so many of them, especially in my country in England, 54:20.000 --> 54:26.180 had come out from the Roman Catholic Church and had been converted wonderfully 54:26.180 --> 54:28.640 to faith in
