WEBVTT 00:26.140 --> 00:26.620 Morning! 00:27.140 --> 00:28.720 Welcome to Inquisition Update. 00:29.120 --> 00:31.920 My name is Tom Friess, and I'll be your host for the next hour. 00:32.220 --> 00:34.880 You're listening to FirstAmendmentRadio .com. 00:34.980 --> 00:36.420 Thank you for tuning in, everybody. 00:37.120 --> 00:41.240 We're going to continue in our reading and discussion of the book, A Woman Rides a 00:41.240 --> 00:42.420 Beast, by Dave Hunt. 00:42.560 --> 00:45.500 We're currently in the chapter entitled, Seducer of Souls. 00:46.390 --> 00:54.380 And we'll continue where we left off last Friday, backing up just one paragraph for 00:54.380 --> 00:55.480 continuity purposes. 00:56.260 --> 01:02.740 The last paragraph of this particular section, you'll find it in the middle of 01:02.740 --> 01:03.860 page 180. 01:04.480 --> 01:05.360 It says, 01:20.900 --> 01:27.560 The latter is so far from Rome's official party line that in 1979, the Vatican 01:27.560 --> 01:29.920 revoked his status as theologian. 01:30.700 --> 01:35.140 Yet he remains a powerful influence within the Roman Catholic Church. 01:35.740 --> 01:42.360 Or take Father Matthew Fox, silenced for one year by the Vatican, but vocal 01:42.360 --> 01:47.700 thereafter, with views that could only be called pagan and New Age. 01:48.960 --> 01:54.380 Expelled from the Dominican Order for insubordination, and not excommunicated 01:54.380 --> 01:59.740 from the Church for his gross heresies, Fox has since become an Episcopalian. 02:00.540 --> 02:04.600 A wide range of other theologians and clergy remain in the Church, from 02:04.600 --> 02:08.980 Maryknoll priests and nuns advocating Marxism and liberation theology, 02:10.000 --> 02:17.660 to the Society of St. Pius X zealots, who are scandalized by John Paul II's 02:17.660 --> 02:18.460 ecumenism. 02:18.960 --> 02:22.080 Okay, there's where we ended up Friday. 02:22.680 --> 02:28.960 Still talking about the real divisions within the Roman Catholic Church. 02:28.960 --> 02:36.000 You know, we're led to believe that the Roman Catholic Church is so united in its 02:36.000 --> 02:45.180 belief system, and that as evidence of its infallibility as the one holy Roman 02:45.180 --> 02:49.180 Catholic and Apostolic Church, outside of which there is no salvation, 02:50.080 --> 02:52.060 which in fact is a lie. 02:52.060 --> 02:58.860 The Roman Catholic Church is fractured into many different pieces. 02:59.860 --> 03:05.380 All rival factions seeking their particular influence over the papacy, 03:06.460 --> 03:10.600 and trying to change the Church, change the theology of the Church, 03:11.280 --> 03:15.480 and it is truly confusion. 03:16.100 --> 03:16.820 Okay? 03:17.120 --> 03:17.860 Confusion. 03:18.560 --> 03:20.660 That's its Babylonian roots. 03:20.880 --> 03:21.520 Confusion. 03:22.400 --> 03:26.720 Now Dave Hunt continues with the next portion of this chapter entitled The Great 03:26.720 --> 03:27.300 Schism. 03:28.220 --> 03:32.040 He says there have been at least as many divisions among Roman Catholics throughout 03:32.040 --> 03:34.440 the centuries as among Protestants. 03:35.340 --> 03:37.340 And there still are to this day. 03:38.220 --> 03:42.440 Some of these disagreements were fought with sword and spear. 03:43.380 --> 03:48.200 Consider for example the Great Schism when France and Italy struggled for possession 03:48.200 --> 03:49.920 of the lucrative papacy. 03:50.940 --> 03:55.900 In 1378 Pope Urban VI, the Neapolitan, became Pope. 03:56.600 --> 04:02.540 Trying to effect some much-needed reform, Urban excommunicated the cardinals who had 04:02.540 --> 04:04.040 purchased their benefices. 04:05.520 --> 04:06.200 Simony. 04:06.200 --> 04:12.280 Now it was a well-intentioned, but politically foolish move, as the 04:12.280 --> 04:17.580 historian Von Gollinger explains, quote, Simony had long been the daily 04:17.580 --> 04:20.780 bread of the Roman Curia, and the breath of its life. 04:21.620 --> 04:28.680 Without Simony, the machine must come to a standstill, and instantly fall to pieces. 04:29.630 --> 04:34.140 The cardinals had, for their own point of view, ample ground for insisting on the 04:34.140 --> 04:36.680 impossibility of subsisting without it. 04:37.400 --> 04:43.940 They accordingly revolted from Urban, and elected Clement VII, a man after their 04:43.940 --> 04:44.660 own heart. 04:45.520 --> 04:51.500 And thus it came to pass that in 1378-1409, Western Christendom was divided 04:51.500 --> 04:53.500 into two obediences. 04:53.500 --> 05:05.040 So because of the war over Simony, the papacy was split in two, there being 05:05.040 --> 05:05.980 two popes. 05:06.680 --> 05:16.920 And in 1409, Pisa was the scene of a synod from all Europe that was called to heal 05:16.920 --> 05:17.600 the breach. 05:18.300 --> 05:23.140 It was the first time in 300 years that those attending such a gathering dared to 05:23.140 --> 05:25.280 speak openly and vote freely. 05:25.840 --> 05:31.160 There was a sense of relief, even of triumph, when the two reigning popes, 05:31.280 --> 05:37.820 Gregory XII and Benedict XIII, were deposed as heretics, and a third 05:37.820 --> 05:40.120 pope, Alexander V, was elected. 05:41.020 --> 05:44.940 Of course, neither of the two popes yielded to their synod's decision. 05:44.940 --> 05:51.700 Now there were three, quote-unquote, vicars of Christ, instead of a mere two, 05:52.180 --> 05:55.600 just as there had been 350 years before. 05:56.500 --> 06:01.120 The situation lasted from 1409-1415 A.D. 06:01.920 --> 06:06.720 Could it be that one of the abominations to which this woman in John's vision would 06:06.720 --> 06:11.240 give birth was a man claiming to be the vicar of Christ? 06:11.240 --> 06:17.580 And even worse, three men each claiming to be Christ's true and only representative 06:17.580 --> 06:21.980 on the earth, each damning those who followed either of the other two? 06:23.000 --> 06:29.760 Catherine of Siena, who persuaded Gregory XI, seventh of the Avignon popes, 06:30.120 --> 06:34.520 to return to Rome, is recognized today as a Catholic saint. 06:35.340 --> 06:42.760 She was a staunch supporter of Urban VI, but he is shown on the list as an 06:42.760 --> 06:43.760 anti-pope. 06:44.280 --> 06:46.100 The worst abominations. 06:46.340 --> 06:51.500 Just before her death, Catherine, who had lengthy trances in which she 06:51.500 --> 06:57.740 allegedly saw heaven, purgatory, and hell, received permission from God, 06:57.820 --> 07:04.540 so she said, to allow her, quote, to bear the punishment of all the sins of 07:04.540 --> 07:06.200 the world, unquote. 07:07.100 --> 07:11.500 Yet Christ's death had already paid the full penalty for sin. 07:12.400 --> 07:15.940 Was she excommunicated as a heretic for blasphemy? 07:16.840 --> 07:22.220 No, she was so admired for her, quote, unquote, sacrifice, that the Roman 07:22.220 --> 07:23.920 Catholic Church made her a saint. 07:23.920 --> 07:29.320 Five hundred years later, the Church would accept the claim that the sufferings, 07:29.660 --> 07:35.060 as evidenced by the stigmata and bleeding in the hands, feet, and the side where 07:35.060 --> 07:42.760 Christ was pierced, endured for fifty years by a monk named Pedro Padre Pio, 07:44.100 --> 07:47.320 were also in payment for the sins of the world. 07:47.320 --> 07:57.220 Pio claimed that more spirits of the dead than living persons visited him in his 07:57.220 --> 07:58.400 monastery cell. 07:59.340 --> 08:04.400 The spirits came to thank him for praying for their sins with his sufferings, 08:05.260 --> 08:08.260 so they could be released from purgatory and go to heaven. 08:09.180 --> 08:14.060 Other monks testified that they heard multitudes of voices talking with Padre 08:14.060 --> 08:15.200 Pio at night. 08:15.200 --> 08:21.880 The Bible, however, repeatedly assures us that Christ suffered the full penalty for 08:21.880 --> 08:22.180 sin. 08:22.840 --> 08:28.480 Quote, In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, 08:28.920 --> 08:30.960 according to the riches of his grace. 08:31.400 --> 08:36.340 Ephesians chapter 1 verse 7 and Colossians chapter 1 verse 14. 08:37.160 --> 08:42.160 There is nothing left for sinners to pay in order to receive the pardon offered by 08:42.160 --> 08:43.120 God's grace. 08:43.120 --> 08:45.880 The debt has been paid in full. 08:46.800 --> 08:48.680 Quote, It is finished. 08:49.220 --> 08:49.900 Unquote. 08:50.540 --> 08:54.460 Christ cried in triumph just before he died upon the cross. 08:55.460 --> 08:59.700 To suggest otherwise is the most serious heresy. 09:00.620 --> 09:05.520 John the Baptist hailed Christ as, quote, the Lamb of God which taketh away 09:05.520 --> 09:06.600 the sin of the world. 09:06.840 --> 09:08.740 See John chapter 1 verse 29. 09:09.740 --> 09:15.040 All others, including Pio at all, being sinners, for all have sinned, 09:15.200 --> 09:21.700 see Romans chapter 3 verse 23, would have to die for their own sins and 09:21.700 --> 09:25.540 therefore could not also pay for the sins of another person. 09:26.300 --> 09:33.920 Peter declared that Christ once and for all time suffered for sins the just, 09:34.320 --> 09:40.660 that is the sinless one, for us the unjust, that he might bring us to God. 09:40.800 --> 09:49.020 First Peter 3.18 Yet Catherine of Siena and Pedro Pio and other suffering saints 09:49.020 --> 09:55.680 are revered and prayed to by millions of Catholics, including the current Pope, 09:56.240 --> 09:58.820 for having suffered for the sins of others. 09:59.780 --> 10:05.780 They are greater than Christ in the sense that his suffering leave good Catholics 10:05.780 --> 10:12.320 still in purgatory, whereas Padre Pio's suffering releases multitudes to heaven. 10:13.240 --> 10:19.540 Vatican II declared that believers have always, quote, carried their crosses to 10:19.540 --> 10:26.680 make expiation for their own sins and the sins of others, to help their brothers 10:26.680 --> 10:29.900 obtain salvation from God, unquote. 10:30.420 --> 10:37.280 Such blasphemy is one of the abominations to which the Roman Catholic Church has 10:37.280 --> 10:40.700 given birth and which she still nurtures today. 10:40.700 --> 10:46.260 Can there be any greater abomination than teaching that sinners for whom Christ paid 10:46.260 --> 10:53.400 the full penalty of sin, need yet to, quote, make expiation for their own sins 10:53.400 --> 10:55.740 and the sins of others, unquote. 10:58.420 --> 11:04.580 Under the subtitle, Idols of Thy Abominations, Dave writes, In the Bible, 11:04.800 --> 11:10.240 the word abomination is a spiritual term associated with idolatry. 11:11.160 --> 11:16.460 God condemned Israel for, quote, the idols of thy abominations, 11:16.680 --> 11:17.200 unquote. 11:17.540 --> 11:20.900 See Ezekiel chapter 16, verse 36. 11:21.980 --> 11:28.120 Occult practices are also called abominations, along with illicit and 11:28.120 --> 11:29.280 perverted sex. 11:30.100 --> 11:34.300 Since the woman astride the beast is, quote, the mother of harlots and 11:34.300 --> 11:40.820 abominations, unquote, it seems clear that these evil practices rooted in Babel will, 11:40.980 --> 11:46.400 under Antichrist, characterize the world religion which this woman represents. 11:47.300 --> 11:52.740 She is called the mother of these things because she has fostered and encouraged 11:52.740 --> 11:53.020 them. 11:53.020 --> 11:58.060 The description fits exactly both the history and the present practice of the 11:58.060 --> 11:59.180 Roman Catholic Church. 12:00.160 --> 12:06.200 The biblical prohibition against making images for religious purposes and bowing 12:06.200 --> 12:14.160 down before them and God's abhorrence of this pagan practice is clearly set forth 12:14.160 --> 12:19.060 in the second of the ten commandments and in numerous other passages of scripture. 12:19.060 --> 12:27.520 For example, quote, ye shall make you no idols nor graven image to bow down unto 12:27.520 --> 12:27.840 it. 12:28.580 --> 12:34.080 Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image an abomination unto the 12:34.080 --> 12:39.760 Lord, unquote, Leviticus 26.1, Deuteronomy 27.15. 12:40.620 --> 12:47.140 Yet Vatican II recommends images in the church as if they are to be venerated by 12:47.140 --> 12:47.840 the faithful. 12:47.840 --> 12:53.200 In Catholic churches and cathedrals around the world one sees the faithful on their 12:53.200 --> 12:59.740 knees in front of images of this sort or that saint, most often Mary. 13:00.520 --> 13:04.540 The second of the ten commandments that God gave to Israel states, quote, 13:04.980 --> 13:09.800 thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image or any likeness of anything that is 13:09.800 --> 13:12.760 in the heaven above or that is in the earth be thee. 13:13.480 --> 13:16.880 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them nor serve them. 13:16.880 --> 13:23.760 Exodus chapter 20 verse 4 and 5 and Deuteronomy chapter 5 verse 8 and 9. 13:24.580 --> 13:27.900 How does the Roman Catholic Church get around this clear prohibition? 13:28.440 --> 13:30.800 She does worse than ignore it. 13:31.080 --> 13:33.740 She literally hides it from the people. 13:34.920 --> 13:39.820 The ten commandments shown in the Catholic catechisms leave out the second 13:39.820 --> 13:45.140 commandment prohibiting images and divide the last one, prohibiting covetousness, 13:45.420 --> 13:46.140 into two. 13:46.140 --> 13:50.780 It is a flagrant rejection of the clear command by God. 13:51.700 --> 13:56.860 Moreover, that rejection is dishonestly covered up by pretending the command 13:56.860 --> 13:57.900 doesn't exist. 13:58.840 --> 14:02.680 It is a deliberate deception practiced upon the members of the church, 14:03.160 --> 14:07.460 most of whom know nothing of the Bible except what the clergy tell them. 14:08.200 --> 14:13.140 When Emperor Leo III issued an edict from Constantinople calling for forcible 14:13.140 --> 14:19.820 baptism of Jews, he was praised, but when in 726 A.D. 14:19.940 --> 14:26.420 he demanded that all images be broken, there was a great outcry from citizens and 14:26.420 --> 14:26.960 clergy. 14:28.000 --> 14:33.580 Pope Gregory II claimed that images were not worshipped, but reverenced. 14:34.440 --> 14:37.760 The truth slipped out, however, in his letter to the Emperor. 14:37.760 --> 14:46.760 But as for the statue of St. Peter himself, which all the kingdoms of the 14:46.760 --> 14:51.820 West esteem as a god on earth, the whole West would take a terrible 14:51.820 --> 14:53.720 revenge if it were destroyed. 14:55.300 --> 15:00.840 A bloody war was fought around Ravina over this issue, and a synod in Rome 15:00.840 --> 15:04.580 excommunicated all who dared attack the images. 15:05.580 --> 15:10.880 Christians had not used images until Constantine became the de facto head of 15:10.880 --> 15:11.460 the church. 15:12.320 --> 15:16.780 The door that was open to paganism at that time has never been shut. 15:17.720 --> 15:22.480 The Roman Catholic Church attempted to accommodate the pagans joining it by 15:22.480 --> 15:26.100 retaining their idols under Christian names. 15:26.880 --> 15:33.200 That practice is still part of Santeria, voodoo, etc. 15:33.460 --> 15:33.860 today. 15:34.700 --> 15:41.900 Catholic apologists insist that veneration is not of the image itself, but of the 15:41.900 --> 15:44.880 quote-unquote saint that it represents. 15:45.860 --> 15:50.580 Yet Pope John Paul II openly promotes the pagan belief that images have power. 15:51.280 --> 15:56.420 Recently at St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope declared, quote, a mysterious 15:56.420 --> 16:03.000 presence of the transcendent prototype seems as it were to be transferred to the 16:03.000 --> 16:03.840 sacred image. 16:04.820 --> 16:10.500 The devout contemplation of such an image thus appears as a real and concrete path 16:10.500 --> 16:15.900 of purification of the soul of the believer, because the image itself, 16:16.240 --> 16:22.920 blessed by the priest, can in a certain sense, by analogy with the sacraments, 16:23.480 --> 16:28.420 actually be considered a channel of divine grace, unquote. 16:29.060 --> 16:34.540 Such idolatry the Bible repeatedly condemns as spiritual adultery or 16:34.540 --> 16:35.360 fornication. 16:36.040 --> 16:43.780 Rome is the mother of harlots in this way as well, having led untold millions into 16:43.780 --> 16:44.640 idolatry. 16:45.160 --> 16:49.180 Now under the subtitle, Salvation for Sale, we're going to talk about 16:49.180 --> 16:54.340 indulgences now, a subject that is familiar to my regular listeners. 16:55.380 --> 16:59.680 The Roman Catholic Church has been in the business of selling salvation to the 16:59.680 --> 17:06.220 naive, with much of her great wealth accumulated from that source. 17:07.120 --> 17:12.860 And she does this in the name of Christ, who offers salvation as a free gift. 17:13.720 --> 17:20.940 He told his disciples, quote, freely ye have received, freely give, unquote. 17:21.100 --> 17:23.040 See Matthew chapter 10 verse 8. 17:23.780 --> 17:27.740 There could be no greater abomination than selling salvation. 17:27.740 --> 17:33.780 Yet Rome has never repented of this evil, but continues similar practice to this 17:33.780 --> 17:34.440 very day. 17:35.380 --> 17:43.000 Under Pope Leo X, who reigned from 1513 to 1521, who cursed and excommunicated Martin 17:43.000 --> 17:49.120 Luther, specific prices were published by the Roman Chancery to be paid to the 17:49.120 --> 17:52.680 church for absolution from each imaginable crime. 17:52.680 --> 17:55.520 Even murder had its price. 17:56.100 --> 18:02.080 For example, a deacon guilty of murder could be absolved for 20 crowns. 18:02.980 --> 18:09.000 The quote-unquote anointed malefactor, as they were called, once pardoned in this 18:09.000 --> 18:13.180 way by the church, could not be prosecuted by civil authorities. 18:14.260 --> 18:17.260 Leo's sale of salvation was nothing new. 18:18.060 --> 18:23.600 200 years earlier, Pope John XXII, who reigned from 1316 to 1334, 18:23.920 --> 18:30.360 had done the very same thing, setting a price for every crime from murder to 18:30.360 --> 18:32.380 incest to sodomy. 18:33.180 --> 18:37.600 The more Catholics sinned, the richer the Roman Catholic Church became. 18:38.500 --> 18:42.100 Similar fundraising schemes had been in operation for years. 18:42.980 --> 18:49.280 Pope Innocent VIII, who reigned from 1484 to 1492, for example, had granted the 18:49.280 --> 18:52.540 20-year Butter Brief indulgence. 18:53.100 --> 18:59.600 For a certain sum, one could purchase the privilege of eating favorite dishes during 18:59.600 --> 19:02.580 Lent and at other times of fasting. 19:03.220 --> 19:08.560 It was a way to be credited with fasting while indulging oneself in the richest 19:08.560 --> 19:09.140 foods. 19:09.140 --> 19:12.740 The people believed that the Popes had such power. 19:13.080 --> 19:19.260 After all, wasn't whatever the quote-unquote victors of Christ bound or 19:19.260 --> 19:22.740 loosed on earth similarly bound and loosed in heaven? 19:23.340 --> 19:28.940 The proceeds from this enterprising scheme built the bridge over the Elbe. 19:29.620 --> 19:36.340 Pope Julius III, who reigned from 1550 to 1555, renewed this indulgence for a 19:36.340 --> 19:40.760 handsome fee for another 20 years after he came to office. 19:41.380 --> 19:48.020 Pope Leo X tore down Constantine's Basilica and built St. Peter's, 19:48.600 --> 19:53.040 largely with monies paid by people who thought they were thereby gaining 19:53.040 --> 19:56.520 forgiveness for sins and entrance into heaven. 19:56.520 --> 20:02.760 That magnificent structure stands as one more piece of evidence that Rome is the 20:02.760 --> 20:04.620 mother of abominations. 20:05.080 --> 20:13.300 As Giovanni de' Medici, Leo had made an abbot at age 7 for his first communion and 20:13.300 --> 20:17.320 a cardinal at age 13. 20:18.280 --> 20:24.420 Though he was the youngest cardinal at the time, Pope Benedict IX ascended the papal 20:24.420 --> 20:25.600 throne at age 11. 20:25.600 --> 20:31.900 Imagine an 11-year-old solemnly pronouncing forgiveness of sins as 20:31.900 --> 20:34.540 Christ's one true representative on earth. 20:35.420 --> 20:40.780 It was Pope Leo X who commissioned the Dominican friar Tetzel to sell 20:40.780 --> 20:47.020 indulgences, which it was promised would free those in purgatory or release the 20:47.020 --> 20:52.260 purchaser, if bought in his own name, from having to spend any time in that 20:52.260 --> 20:53.860 intermediate place of torment. 20:54.820 --> 21:00.920 Tetzel's infamous sales pitch went something like this, quote, As soon as the 21:00.920 --> 21:06.660 coin in the coffer rings, a soul from purgatory springs, unquote. 21:07.600 --> 21:12.200 How could anyone be so naive as to believe that the forgiveness of sin for which 21:12.200 --> 21:18.020 Christ had to endure the full wrath of God upon the cross could be purchased with 21:18.020 --> 21:18.480 money? 21:18.480 --> 21:25.480 This, quote, unquote, God of Catholicism, who moves in response to whatever 21:25.480 --> 21:31.120 regulations a corrupt church invents, is clearly not the God of the Bible. 21:32.020 --> 21:37.920 It was this particular abomination of selling salvation that scandalized Martin 21:37.920 --> 21:41.380 Luther and sparked the Protestant Reformation. 21:42.110 --> 21:47.880 Well-meaning Protestants, wanting to believe the best, imagine that Roman 21:47.880 --> 21:53.120 Catholicism has rid itself of past abominations, including indulgences. 21:54.100 --> 21:59.700 But Charles Colson's book, entitled The Body, contains examples of such incorrect 21:59.700 --> 22:00.400 information. 22:00.960 --> 22:06.440 Though the book eloquently speaks much truth, it erroneously presents Roman 22:06.440 --> 22:13.080 Catholicism as biblical Christianity and calls for union therewith on the part of 22:13.080 --> 22:14.180 evangelicals. 22:15.040 --> 22:20.780 Colson writes, quote, the Reformers, for example, assailed the corrupt 22:20.780 --> 22:22.680 practices of indulgences. 22:23.340 --> 22:29.200 Today, they, meaning indulgences, are gone, save for the modern-day 22:29.200 --> 22:36.900 equivalent practices by some unscrupulous televangelist hucksters, ironically mostly 22:36.900 --> 22:43.520 Protestants, who promise healing and blessing for contributions, unquote. 22:44.220 --> 22:51.000 We endorse his condemnation of the, quote, unscrupulous television hucksters, 22:51.200 --> 22:56.080 unquote, but wonder at his incorrect interpretation of Rome. 22:56.080 --> 23:02.960 A major document of Vatican Council 2 devotes 17 pages to explaining indulgences 23:02.960 --> 23:10.840 and how to obtain them, and excommunicates and damns any who deny that the Church has 23:10.840 --> 23:14.340 the right to grant indulgences today for salvation. 23:14.940 --> 23:20.800 The rules are complex and ludicrous as well as abominable. 23:21.580 --> 23:26.480 Try to imagine God honoring such regulations as granting certain 23:26.480 --> 23:33.540 indulgences, quote, only on set days appointed by the Holy See, or that of a 23:33.540 --> 23:39.320 plenary indulgence applicable only to the dead can be gained in all churches on 23:39.320 --> 23:40.620 November 2nd. 23:41.000 --> 23:42.840 We'll be back right after this. 24:09.280 --> 24:12.360 You're listening to FirstAmendmentRadio .com. 24:12.560 --> 24:14.560 Worldwide, freedom is never free. 24:14.720 --> 24:18.380 We need your support today at titled, When the Third Temple is 24:31.260 --> 24:31.560 Built. 24:31.920 --> 24:33.560 That's crosstheborder.org. 24:33.560 --> 24:37.640 When it comes to prophecy today, much of the evangelical Christian world 24:37.640 --> 24:42.220 has their eyes on Israel, waiting and watching to see when the Third Temple will 24:42.220 --> 24:43.040 begin to be built. 24:43.540 --> 24:44.800 The plans are drawn. 24:44.920 --> 24:46.240 The Jewish people are eager. 24:46.840 --> 24:50.580 Most evangelical Christians today believe that the rapture will happen before the 24:50.580 --> 24:51.540 Third Temple is built. 24:52.040 --> 24:53.520 Hi, I'm Michael Eugene. 24:54.040 --> 24:56.720 I was taught that Daniel's 70th week was in the future. 24:57.300 --> 24:58.960 Is that really what the Bible teaches? 24:58.960 --> 25:02.580 Have we searched the Scriptures and found this to be true? 25:03.320 --> 25:06.900 Why is it so important for a re-established Israel to build a Third 25:06.900 --> 25:07.780 Temple in Jerusalem? 25:08.420 --> 25:12.980 Is it necessary to build a temple on the same location already occupied by the Dome 25:12.980 --> 25:13.440 of the Rock? 25:14.040 --> 25:18.020 Is it necessary for sacrifices to take place in the Temple on Temple Mount? 25:18.760 --> 25:21.840 Is there really a rapture followed by seven years of tribulation? 25:22.600 --> 25:24.100 What is the New Testament Temple? 25:24.920 --> 25:27.060 Can we identify history and prophecy? 25:27.740 --> 25:30.840 Who is the first beast in Revelation Chapter 13? 25:31.460 --> 25:34.080 Who are the seven kings in Revelation 17? 25:34.860 --> 25:38.400 I have asked all these questions and I have found Nicholas Arthur's new book, 25:38.780 --> 25:43.260 When the Third Temple is Built, answers all these questions and more using 25:43.260 --> 25:44.860 Scripture to interpret Scripture. 25:45.560 --> 25:49.000 The Bible says that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private 25:49.000 --> 25:49.740 interpretation. 25:49.740 --> 25:53.400 Nicholas shows us in his new book, When the Third Temple is Built, 25:53.600 --> 25:58.100 how the Bible interprets prophecy and not man's private interpretation. 25:59.080 --> 26:05.420 Visit crosstheborder.org, c-r-o-s-s, crosstheborder.org to get your print, 26:05.780 --> 26:11.080 e-pub, or pdf version of Nicholas Arthur's new book titled, of Jesus Christ. 26:22.380 --> 26:25.640 This is at the very heart of firstamendmentradio.com. 26:26.320 --> 26:31.540 In that spirit, we have created the Prophecy Reality News app for all of your but wonder at his 27:19.640 --> 27:21.840 incorrect interpretation of Rome. 27:22.700 --> 27:29.560 A major document of Vatican II devotes 17 pages to explaining indulgences, 27:29.560 --> 27:37.820 and how to obtain them, and excommunicates and damns any who deny that the Roman 27:37.820 --> 27:42.280 Catholic Church has the right to grant indulgences today for salvation. 27:43.220 --> 27:47.220 The rules are complex and ludicrous as well as abominable. 27:48.180 --> 27:53.560 Try to imagine God honoring such regulations as granting certain 27:53.560 --> 27:59.880 indulgences, quote, only on set days appointed by the Holy See, unquote, 28:00.400 --> 28:07.420 or that a, quote, plenary indulgence applicable only to the dead can be gained 28:07.420 --> 28:11.040 in all churches on November 2nd, etc. 28:11.260 --> 28:13.320 I wonder why they chose November 2nd. 28:14.400 --> 28:15.620 Anybody have an idea? 28:16.160 --> 28:17.080 I do. 28:17.740 --> 28:23.660 The entire teaching on indulgences denies the sufficiency of Christ's redemptive 28:23.660 --> 28:25.900 sacrifice for sins upon the cross. 28:26.520 --> 28:30.540 Some ancient indulgences even remain in force today. 28:31.440 --> 28:37.380 A recent notice inside the publication known as Inside the Vatican reminded Roman 28:37.380 --> 28:43.840 Catholics that on August 28th and 29th of 1994, an unusual opportunity for obtaining 28:43.840 --> 28:45.960 a special indulgence would occur. 28:45.960 --> 28:56.320 Quote, Pope Celestine V gave a holy door to the Cathedral of Maria Callimaggio in 28:56.320 --> 29:00.100 his bull of the 29th of September 1294. 29:00.940 --> 29:07.940 To obtain this, quote, unquote, perdonanza indulgence, it's necessary to 29:07.940 --> 29:10.640 be in the Cathedral between 6 p.m. 29:10.660 --> 29:13.540 on the 28th of August and 6 p.m. 29:13.560 --> 29:15.080 on the 29th of August. 29:15.080 --> 29:22.160 To truly repent of one's sins and to confess and go to mass and communion 29:22.160 --> 29:24.260 within 8 days of the visit. 29:25.200 --> 29:33.820 The holy door is opened every year, but this year, 1994, is the 700th 29:33.820 --> 29:36.700 anniversary of the bull of pardon. 29:37.620 --> 29:39.560 Go there, unquote. 29:39.560 --> 29:43.680 Warning, reformation ahead. 29:44.680 --> 29:49.620 Inside the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church, to which Martin Luther nailed his 29:49.620 --> 29:56.440 95 theses, were relics, including an alleged lock of the Virgin Mary's hair, 29:57.400 --> 30:04.120 offering two million years in indulgences to those venerating them according to 30:04.120 --> 30:05.460 prescribed rules. 30:06.460 --> 30:11.460 Never has the Roman Catholic Church apologized for having led multitudes 30:11.460 --> 30:12.820 astray in this manner. 30:13.700 --> 30:19.500 And how does one apologize to souls now in hell for having sold them a bogus, 30:19.980 --> 30:22.240 quote, ticket to heaven, unquote. 30:23.080 --> 30:28.660 For both ingenuity and infamy, no money-grabbing scheme of the past or of 30:28.660 --> 30:34.320 today's unscrupulous television hucksters even comes close to the sale of 30:34.320 --> 30:35.200 indulgences. 30:35.920 --> 30:40.020 It provided much cash for the popes at the time of the Reformation. 30:41.000 --> 30:49.540 In AD 593, Pope Gregory I had first proposed the unbiblical, but ultimately 30:49.540 --> 30:55.960 very, very profitable idea that there was a place called Purgatory, in which the 30:55.960 --> 31:00.840 spirits of the dead suffered in order to be purged of their sins and fully 31:00.840 --> 31:05.380 delivered from, quote, the debt of eternal punishment, unquote. 31:06.260 --> 31:12.800 This fabrication was declared to be a church dogma by the Council of Florence in 31:12.800 --> 31:18.100 1439 and remains an important part of Roman Catholicism today. 31:19.040 --> 31:24.140 It was not such abominable heresies, however, that divided Roman Catholics. 31:24.140 --> 31:29.360 All seemed content with the promise that the church would somehow get them to 31:29.360 --> 31:35.060 heaven no matter how repugnant to common sense and justice the methods were. 31:35.600 --> 31:41.260 As Chamberlain has said, quote, the eye of faith was blind to the 31:41.260 --> 31:43.420 incidental discrepancies, unquote. 31:44.340 --> 31:49.760 It was the division caused by the rival popes, each claiming to be in charge of 31:49.760 --> 31:53.980 the machinery of salvation that stirred the church to action. 31:54.780 --> 32:01.560 By deposing all three rivals who each claimed to be the so-called vicar of 32:01.560 --> 32:07.220 Christ and then appointing a new pope, Martin V, the Council of Constance 32:07.220 --> 32:08.660 reunited the church. 32:09.660 --> 32:13.320 Many bishops were convinced that a reformation was desperately needed. 32:14.140 --> 32:19.080 To move the church toward reformation, Constance decreed that there should be 32:19.080 --> 32:22.300 another ecumenical council each ten years. 32:23.200 --> 32:29.260 Pope Martin V dutifully, quote, summoned the council in 1423 to meet first 32:29.260 --> 32:32.240 at Pavia, then at Siena. 32:32.840 --> 32:38.100 But the moment any signs of an attempt to reform manifested themselves, he dissolved 32:38.100 --> 32:42.800 it, quote, on account of the fewness of those present, unquote. 32:42.800 --> 32:47.420 However, shortly before his death, he summoned the new council to meet at 32:47.420 --> 32:47.900 Basel. 32:48.880 --> 32:53.960 Martin V's successor, Eugenius IV, could not avoid carrying out the duty he 32:53.960 --> 32:59.160 had inherited from his predecessor, to which he was already pledged in 32:59.160 --> 33:00.820 conclave, unquote. 33:01.580 --> 33:07.580 The struggle for supremacy between the popes and the councils, Eugenius ordered 33:07.580 --> 33:12.180 the council disbanded almost immediately upon a pretext. 33:12.180 --> 33:17.720 But the assembly refused, and a contest with the pope began. 33:18.780 --> 33:23.220 At first, with the backing of the general populace of Europe and King Sigismund, 33:23.840 --> 33:27.540 in vain, the pope excommunicated the prelates involved. 33:28.540 --> 33:35.020 Support for reform poured into the council from kings, princes, bishops, prelates, 33:35.500 --> 33:36.640 and universities. 33:37.640 --> 33:43.060 Under pressure, the pope was forced to give the council his full sanction, 33:43.920 --> 33:48.860 an acknowledgement once again of the superiority of council over pope, 33:49.260 --> 33:54.380 which Pope Pius IX would manage to reverse at Vatican Council I. 33:55.180 --> 34:01.520 The council deposed Eugenius, calling him, quote, a notorious disturber of peace and 34:01.520 --> 34:08.320 unity of God's church, a simoniac, a perjurer, an incorrigible man, 34:08.860 --> 34:16.480 a schismatic, an apostate from the faith, an obstinate heretic, a squanderer of the 34:16.480 --> 34:22.600 church rights and property, incapable and harmful to the administration of the Roman 34:22.600 --> 34:24.160 pontificate, unquote. 34:24.160 --> 34:30.340 Yet his name remains on today's official lists of the vicars of Christ. 34:31.240 --> 34:36.960 With great courage, the council declared, quote, all ecclesiastical appointments 34:36.960 --> 34:39.600 shall be made according to the canons of the church. 34:40.480 --> 34:42.080 All simonies shall cease. 34:43.140 --> 34:48.040 All priests, whether the highest or lowest rank, shall put away their concubines. 34:48.900 --> 34:54.640 And whoever within two months of this decree neglects its demands shall be 34:54.640 --> 34:58.640 deprived of his office, though he be the bishop of Rome. 34:59.500 --> 35:05.400 The pope shall neither demand nor receive any fees for ecclesiastical offices. 35:06.460 --> 35:13.060 From now on, a pope shall think not of this world's treasures, but only of those 35:13.060 --> 35:15.460 of the world to come, unquote. 35:16.240 --> 35:23.200 That machine, or rather, that medicine, excuse me, proved too strong. 35:23.820 --> 35:26.760 And the tide of opinion turned against the council. 35:27.400 --> 35:31.600 The people wanted reformation, but not that much reformation. 35:32.180 --> 35:36.960 And the last thing the pope and the curia wanted was to be required to live as true 35:36.960 --> 35:40.660 Christians with a council making certain they did. 35:41.460 --> 35:48.360 Pope Eugenius summoned his own council at Florence, deposed and anathematized the 35:48.360 --> 35:55.840 members of Basel, quote, laid Basel under interdict, excommunicated the municipal 35:55.840 --> 36:00.940 court, and required everyone to plunder the merchants who were bringing their 36:00.940 --> 36:09.200 wares to the city, because it is written, quote, the righteous hath spoiled the 36:09.200 --> 36:10.940 ungodly, unquote. 36:11.280 --> 36:18.540 The pope then bribed King Frederick with a hundred thousand florins, quote, 36:18.800 --> 36:24.740 together with the imperial crown, assigned tithes to him from all the German 36:24.740 --> 36:31.340 benefices, and gave full power to his confessor to give him twice a plenary 36:31.340 --> 36:34.340 absolution from all sins, unquote. 36:34.340 --> 36:40.640 Such is the abominable manner in which the popes dispensed their favors, including 36:40.640 --> 36:42.000 forgiveness of sins. 36:42.380 --> 36:48.020 Let me tell you, popes of Rome still wield that kind of power, and that's how they 36:48.020 --> 36:53.680 control the kings and presidents and queens and potentates of the world. 36:54.320 --> 37:01.280 Still, the world has not learned the lesson of history or of Bible prophecy. 37:01.280 --> 37:06.880 He says the Council of Basel could not compete with the power and wealth of the 37:06.880 --> 37:07.180 pope. 37:08.200 --> 37:10.880 Eugenius now had the backing he needed. 37:11.840 --> 37:16.800 Von Dollinger comments, quote, the victory of Eugenius was complete. 37:17.680 --> 37:22.140 When on his deathbed he received the homage of the German ambassadors, 37:22.960 --> 37:29.460 the event was celebrated, February 7, 1447, in Rome, with the ringing of bells 37:29.460 --> 37:30.440 and bonfires. 37:30.440 --> 37:36.940 Even the slight concessions the pope had made to the Germans, he thereupon recalled 37:36.940 --> 37:39.840 in secret bowls, unquote. 37:40.740 --> 37:47.960 In 1443, an anonymous German Catholic, in mourning for his church, seemed to echo 37:47.960 --> 37:54.500 the very vision that God had given John in the book of Revelation, chapter 17. 37:55.360 --> 38:01.520 Quote, the Roman harlot has so many paramours, drunk with the wine of her 38:01.520 --> 38:06.980 fornications, that the bride of Christ, the church, and the council representing 38:06.980 --> 38:14.080 her, scarcely received the loyal devotion of one among a thousand, unquote. 38:14.560 --> 38:20.740 As he died, having triumphed over the council and Germany, Eugenius cried in 38:20.740 --> 38:26.080 agony of conscience, quote, how much better were it for thy soul's salvation, 38:26.720 --> 38:30.600 hadst thou never become cardinal and pope, unquote. 38:30.840 --> 38:38.280 The next pope, Nicholas the Fifth, who reigned from 1447 to 1455, 38:39.900 --> 38:46.740 voided Eugenius' decrees against the council of Basel, yet both popes remain on 38:46.740 --> 38:48.600 the official list of popes today. 38:48.600 --> 38:54.780 It was the last chance for the papacy to be reformed, but it would not happen. 38:55.620 --> 39:00.300 In only a short while, the curious, diligent forgers were at work once again 39:00.300 --> 39:06.400 producing more false documents to prove the pope's infallibility and dominance 39:06.400 --> 39:07.200 overall. 39:09.440 --> 39:16.020 Under the subtitle, Corruption of the Era, Dave Hunt continues, he says, Rome's 39:16.020 --> 39:23.780 dominance of church and world for more than a thousand years through 39:23.780 --> 39:31.780 excommunication, torture, and death had led to corruption of such proportions that 39:31.780 --> 39:35.440 even the secular world recoiled in shame and horror. 39:36.380 --> 39:40.340 The cry resounded throughout Christendom for a reformation of the church. 39:40.340 --> 39:46.640 All knew, however, that it was impossible, as long as the court of Rome remained what 39:46.640 --> 39:47.180 it was. 39:48.000 --> 39:54.480 Quote, There every mischief is fostered and protected, and hence it spreads, 39:55.080 --> 39:59.740 but there, unless a miracle, there is no hope for reformation. 40:00.180 --> 40:00.660 Unquote. 40:01.480 --> 40:06.760 Among the popes who followed Nicholas on Peter's alleged throne were some whose 40:06.760 --> 40:09.080 evil was beyond imagination. 40:09.080 --> 40:18.480 Von Dollinger says of Pope Paul II, Sixtus IV, Innocent VIII, and Alexander 40:18.480 --> 40:25.320 VI, that each tried, quote, to exceed the vices of his predecessor. 40:25.660 --> 40:26.120 Unquote. 40:27.060 --> 40:32.620 One contemporary said that Paul II had, quote, made the papal chair into a sewer 40:32.620 --> 40:34.040 by his debaucheries. 40:34.280 --> 40:34.720 Unquote. 40:35.480 --> 40:41.240 Pilgrims who went to Rome with high hopes returned disillusioned, just like Martin 40:41.240 --> 40:46.240 Luther, to declare that, quote, In the metropolis of Christendom, 40:46.580 --> 40:52.680 speaking of Rome, and in the bosom of the great mother and mistress of all churches, 40:53.480 --> 40:58.580 the clergy, with scarcely an exception, keep concubines. 40:58.900 --> 40:59.400 Unquote. 40:59.820 --> 41:02.380 And the church made a profit from it. 41:03.720 --> 41:12.720 Pope Sixtus IV, who reigned from 1471 to 1484, who had licensed Rome's brothels for 41:12.720 --> 41:19.820 an annual fee, and taxed the clergy for their mistresses, invented an even more 41:19.820 --> 41:22.720 ingenious method of filling the church coffers. 41:23.620 --> 41:27.000 It would be used by the popes after him to full advantage. 41:27.840 --> 41:35.540 Sixtus decided that he, as Christ's vicar, could apply indulgences to the dead as 41:35.540 --> 41:36.540 well as to the living. 41:37.080 --> 41:42.320 It was a novel idea which no one had thought of before, and one which turned 41:42.320 --> 41:44.580 out to be incredibly profitable. 41:45.500 --> 41:51.140 What surviving relative could refuse to purchase the release of a deceased mother, 41:51.400 --> 41:55.680 father, aunt or uncle or child from the tortures of purgatory? 41:55.680 --> 42:02.120 And of course, the richer the living relatives were, the more it invariably 42:02.120 --> 42:05.520 cost to transfer the deceased from purgatory to heaven. 42:06.480 --> 42:11.060 One marvels that anyone would take the word of such an evil pope. 42:11.880 --> 42:18.440 But Sixtus was no worse than many others, and after all, evil or not, he was 42:18.440 --> 42:21.520 Christ's vicar and the successor of Peter. 42:22.200 --> 42:23.100 Was he not? 42:23.100 --> 42:30.080 Again, Chamberlain put it so well, quote, No lay monarch, no matter how 42:30.080 --> 42:36.260 powerful or virtuous, could hope to attract to himself the deep instinctive 42:36.260 --> 42:42.200 reverence that men felt for the successor of St. Peter, no matter how unworthy, 42:42.700 --> 42:43.180 unquote. 42:44.040 --> 42:49.760 The few bold souls such as Savonarola of Florence, who dared to criticize Rome's 42:49.760 --> 42:53.980 abominations, were consigned to the flames for their zeal. 42:54.800 --> 42:56.720 Now on to the Council of Trent. 42:57.060 --> 43:01.880 Dave Hunt says, Such was the state of the Roman Catholic Church at the time of the 43:01.880 --> 43:02.680 Protestant Reformation. 43:03.820 --> 43:07.000 Remember, Luther and Calvin were devout Roman Catholics. 43:07.680 --> 43:09.040 There were no Protestants. 43:09.940 --> 43:12.220 That word had not yet been invented. 43:13.500 --> 43:17.680 Multitudes had been crying for reformation for at least 200 years. 43:18.520 --> 43:24.460 No one, however, Calvin and Martin Luther included, wanted to leave the Roman 43:24.460 --> 43:25.320 Catholic Church. 43:25.760 --> 43:29.140 They desired to see it reformed from within. 43:30.120 --> 43:35.500 Furious at the challenge to their power, the popes would have consigned Luther and 43:35.500 --> 43:36.900 Calvin to the flames. 43:37.700 --> 43:41.500 But unable to get their hands on them because of the protection afforded by 43:41.500 --> 43:46.980 certain German princes, the hierarchy threw them summarily out of the Church. 43:47.460 --> 43:53.460 Sick to death with the arrogant despotisms of the papacy, with its oppression and 43:53.460 --> 44:00.520 slaughter of any who would not bow to its imperious demands, multitudes followed 44:00.520 --> 44:05.720 Martin Luther and John Calvin and the other reformers, the Reformation leaders, 44:05.900 --> 44:07.080 out of the Church. 44:07.840 --> 44:13.320 Giddy with the first gasping breaths of spiritual freedom they had ever drawn. 44:14.140 --> 44:20.780 Suddenly Protestantism, this upstart clamor of heresy, was thriving and on the 44:20.780 --> 44:21.900 march everywhere. 44:22.900 --> 44:29.440 Pope Paul III saw his empire dwindling and his influence over kings coming to an end. 44:29.440 --> 44:35.960 A despotic Renaissance pope who had, quote, bestowed the red hat on his 44:35.960 --> 44:42.260 nephews, age 14 and 17, and promoting them despite their notorious immorality, 44:42.740 --> 44:43.260 unquote. 44:44.140 --> 44:47.720 Pope Paul III acted decisively on two fronts. 44:48.540 --> 44:52.900 He convened a council in Trent, in northern Italy, that would condemn the 44:52.900 --> 44:54.940 Protestant Reformation theologically. 44:55.860 --> 45:01.240 And he went to work behind the scenes to organize a holy war that was intended to 45:01.240 --> 45:06.680 militarily wipe Protestantism from the face of the earth in Christ's name. 45:07.540 --> 45:16.860 Rome's popularity was at a low ebb when the Council of Trent met in 1545 to 45:16.860 --> 45:21.620 consider its response to the menace of Protestantism, which threatened the Church 45:21.620 --> 45:22.660 and much of Europe. 45:22.660 --> 45:27.640 There were still many clergy within the Roman Catholic Church who realized the 45:27.640 --> 45:31.960 need for a Reformation and hoped that the Council of Trent would bring it about, 45:32.620 --> 45:37.700 thereby making it possible to welcome those who had left the Church back into 45:37.700 --> 45:38.380 its fold. 45:39.240 --> 45:42.980 The Pope and his Curia, however, had other plans. 45:43.760 --> 45:51.200 The opening speech at the Council by Bishop Coriolano Martorano encouraged 45:51.200 --> 45:53.140 those who hoped for reform. 45:54.140 --> 45:59.440 Unfortunately, very few so-minded were present, for the Pope had stacked the deck 45:59.440 --> 46:00.780 with his own men. 46:01.700 --> 46:07.640 Von Dolliger describes that stirring oration, quote, The picture he, 46:07.900 --> 46:13.400 Mortorano, drew of the Italian cardinals and bishops, their bloodthirsty cruelty, 46:13.920 --> 46:17.920 their avarice, their pride, and the devastation they had wrought of the 46:17.920 --> 46:20.060 Church, was perfectly shocking. 46:21.060 --> 46:28.180 An unknown writer who has described this first sitting in a letter to a friend 46:28.180 --> 46:33.320 thinks Luther himself never spoke more severely, unquote. 46:34.120 --> 46:39.480 In fact, this lone cry for a return to genuine Christianity was followed by a 46:39.480 --> 46:45.980 chorus supporting the very evil which Martorano had exposed. 46:46.920 --> 46:53.660 The Council of Trent, controlled by Italians, was to prove itself incapable of 46:53.660 --> 46:54.880 facing the facts. 46:55.440 --> 47:01.760 When once again a non-Italian delegate dared to bring up charges that reflected 47:01.760 --> 47:09.140 badly upon the papacy, the Italian bishops shouted, stamped their feet, and cried 47:09.140 --> 47:13.280 that this, quote, accursed wretch must not speak. 47:13.760 --> 47:16.700 He should at once be brought to trial, unquote. 47:17.520 --> 47:22.880 The, quote, freedom of speech, unquote, at Trent was similar to what it 47:22.880 --> 47:27.980 would be 325 years later in Rome at Vatican Council 1. 47:28.860 --> 47:33.620 A famous eyewitness wrote shortly after the council opened that nothing beneficial 47:33.620 --> 47:37.680 was to be hoped for from the monstrous bishops attending. 47:38.680 --> 47:43.880 There was nothing episcopal about them except their long robes. 47:44.680 --> 47:50.900 They had become bishops through royal favor, through solicitation, through 47:50.900 --> 47:57.300 purchase in Rome, through criminal arts, or after long years spent in the Curia, 47:57.600 --> 47:58.000 unquote. 47:58.780 --> 48:02.180 They, quote, must all be deposed, unquote. 48:02.180 --> 48:07.160 If Trent was to produce anything worthy, but that was impossible. 48:08.180 --> 48:13.840 Another contemporary, Pallavicini, wrote, quote, the Italian bishops knew of 48:13.840 --> 48:19.700 no other aim than the upholding of the apostolic see and its greatness. 48:20.520 --> 48:26.520 They thought that in working for its interests, they showed themselves at once, 48:27.000 --> 48:30.820 good Italians and good Christians, unquote. 48:30.820 --> 48:35.520 Now Dave is going to talk a little bit about the Catholic and Protestant wars. 48:36.180 --> 48:42.380 He says, not satisfied with damning the Protestants theologically, the canons and 48:42.380 --> 48:46.960 decrees of the Council of Trent containing more than 100 anathemas against Protestant 48:46.960 --> 48:51.740 beliefs, Pope Paul III wanted to destroy them physically. 48:52.220 --> 48:59.160 He offered the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V of Spain, 1,100,000 ducats, 48:59.160 --> 49:07.920 12,000 infantry, 500 horses, if he would turn his full force against the, 49:07.940 --> 49:09.440 quote-unquote, heretics. 49:10.200 --> 49:15.460 The Catholic Emperor was only too happy to have a reason to bring the rival 49:15.460 --> 49:20.840 Protestant princes of Germany into subjection, unquote, to crush 49:20.840 --> 49:25.940 Protestantism and give to his realm a unified Catholic faith that would, 49:26.000 --> 49:30.440 he thought, strengthen and facilitate his own government, unquote. 49:30.960 --> 49:34.960 Nearly ten years of war across Europe ensued. 49:35.840 --> 49:41.980 Pope Paul III, quote, issued a bull excommunicating all who should resist 49:41.980 --> 49:48.560 Charles and offering liberal indulgences to all who should aid him, unquote. 49:49.260 --> 49:55.340 After heavy losses on both sides and much treasury among rival rulers, the 49:55.340 --> 49:59.280 Protestants remained strong enough to force the Emperor into a compromise. 50:00.340 --> 50:04.580 Will Durant explains the settlement that created the state churches, which still 50:04.580 --> 50:05.860 exist in Europe today. 50:06.520 --> 50:12.420 Quote, In order to permit peace among and within the states, each prince was to 50:12.420 --> 50:15.720 choose between Roman Catholicism and Lutheranism. 50:16.380 --> 50:22.660 All his subjects were to accept, quote, his religion, whose realm, 50:23.080 --> 50:28.620 unquote, it was, and those who did not like it were to emigrate. 50:29.340 --> 50:32.560 There was no pretense on either side to toleration. 50:33.360 --> 50:37.260 The principle which the Reformation had upheld in the youth of its rebellion, 50:37.860 --> 50:41.820 the right of private judgment, was as completely rejected by the 50:41.820 --> 50:43.920 Protestant leaders as by the Catholics. 50:44.540 --> 50:48.980 The Protestants now agreed with Charles and the Pope that unity of religious 50:48.980 --> 50:52.080 belief was indispensable to social order and peace. 50:52.960 --> 50:57.060 The princes were to banish dissenters instead of burning them. 50:57.880 --> 51:01.500 The real victor was not freedom of worship, but freedom of the princes. 51:02.400 --> 51:06.800 Each became, like Henry VIII of England, a supreme head of the church, whether 51:06.800 --> 51:12.060 Catholic or Protestant, in his territory, with the exclusive right to appoint the 51:12.060 --> 51:15.480 clergy and the men who should define the obligatory faiths. 51:16.520 --> 51:17.540 We've run out of time. 51:17.680 --> 51:20.180 We'll finish this quote tomorrow on the broadcast. 51:20.500 --> 51:21.260 Thanks for listening. --> 53:46.670 e-pub, or PDF version of Nicholas Arthur's new book titled, When the Third Temple is 53:46.670 --> 53:46.990 Built. 53:47.350 --> 53:48.950 That's crosstheborder.org. 53:48.950 --> 53:53.030 When it comes to prophecy today, much of the Evangelical Christian world 53:53.030 --> 53:57.630 has their eyes on Israel, waiting and watching to see when the Third Temple will 53:57.630 --> 53:58.430 begin to be built. 53:58.950 --> 54:00.210 The plans are drawn. 54:00.330 --> 54:01.650 The Jewish people are eager. 54:02.250 --> 54:05.990 Most Evangelical Christians today believe that the rapture will happen before the 54:05.990 --> 54:06.950 Third Temple is built. 54:07.410 --> 54:08.930 Hi, I'm Michael Eugene. 54:09.450 --> 54:12.110 I was taught that Daniel's 70th week was in the future. 54:12.710 --> 54:14.370 Is that really what the Bible teaches? 54:14.990 --> 54:17.990 Have we searched the Scriptures and found this to be true? 54:17.990 --> 54:22.310 Why is it so important for a re-established Israel to build a Third 54:22.310 --> 54:23.170 Temple in Jerusalem? 54:23.770 --> 54:28.390 Is it necessary to build a Temple on the same location already occupied by the Dome 54:28.390 --> 54:28.870 of the Rock? 54:29.290 --> 54:33.410 Is it necessary for sacrifices to take place in the Temple on Temple Mount? 54:33.970 --> 54:37.230 Is there really a rapture followed by seven years of tribulation? 54:38.070 --> 54:39.490 What is the New Testament Temple? 54:40.350 --> 54:42.450 Can we identify history and prophecy? 54:43.510 --> 54:46.250 Who is the first beast in Revelation Chapter 13? 54:46.250 --> 54:49.470 Who are the seven kings in Revelation 17? 54:50.270 --> 54:53.830 I have asked all these questions and I have found Nicholas Arthur's new book, 54:54.350 --> 54:58.670 When the Third Temple is Built, answers all these questions and more using 54:58.670 --> 55:00.270 Scripture to interpret Scripture. 55:00.970 --> 55:04.390 The Bible says that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private 55:04.390 --> 55:05.110 interpretation. 55:05.950 --> 55:08.830 Nicholas shows us in his new book, When the Third Temple is Built, 55:08.990 --> 55:13.470 how the Bible interprets prophecy and not man's private interpretation. 55:14.470 --> 55:23.590 Visit crosstheborder.org to get your print, e-pub, or PDF version of Nicholas 55:23.590 --> 55:26.830 Arthur's new book titled, When the Third Temple is Built. 55:27.190 --> 55:28.870 That's crosstheborder.org.
