WEBVTT 00:03.560 --> 00:07.240 This is going to be a pretty in-depth study, going from scripture to scripture. 00:07.380 --> 00:12.100 We're going to be studying all the basic facets of denying self. 00:13.640 --> 00:17.820 You can title the study Self-Denial or Death to Self. 00:20.120 --> 00:23.880 And it's important that you realize we're going to be going quickly through many 00:23.880 --> 00:24.300 scriptures. 00:24.820 --> 00:30.580 You're to write the scriptures down and then go back at another time and look them 00:30.580 --> 00:33.020 up and study them and pray over them. 00:35.360 --> 00:39.400 Some of these are very good memorization scriptures, although I don't believe in a 00:39.400 --> 00:40.580 lot of scripture memorization. 00:40.760 --> 00:44.080 I think you can clutter your head up with too much of the scripture without 00:44.080 --> 00:46.920 meditating on it, without really... 00:46.920 --> 00:52.320 I mean, I've seen people that memorize chapters and chapters and chapters and 00:52.320 --> 00:55.400 they can recite it to you, but so can a parrot. 00:56.400 --> 00:59.300 It doesn't matter how much of the scripture you have memorized. 00:59.300 --> 01:03.220 It's how much of the scripture you have digested in your spirit. 01:04.120 --> 01:07.960 I know there's many people that would disagree with me, but I started memorizing 01:07.960 --> 01:12.800 scripture and I was more into the memorization of it than the practice and 01:12.800 --> 01:14.680 assimilation of it into my life. 01:16.840 --> 01:19.260 But there's some great scripture here for memorization. 01:20.340 --> 01:22.900 1 Kings chapter 17, verse 12. 01:25.520 --> 01:26.740 Let's start at verse 8. 01:28.200 --> 01:34.660 Then the word of the Lord came to him, Elijah, saying, Arise, go to Zarephath, 01:34.880 --> 01:36.680 which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. 01:37.260 --> 01:40.260 Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you. 01:41.080 --> 01:44.100 So he arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city, 01:44.180 --> 01:47.540 behold, a widow was there gathering sticks, and he called to her and said, 01:47.620 --> 01:50.200 Please, get me a little water in a jar that I may drink. 01:50.960 --> 01:54.300 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, Please bring me 01:54.300 --> 01:55.620 a piece of bread in your hand. 01:57.600 --> 02:02.220 But she said, As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour 02:02.220 --> 02:04.300 in the bowl and a little oil in the jar. 02:04.900 --> 02:08.460 And behold, I am gathering a few sticks, that I may go and prepare for me and my 02:08.460 --> 02:10.720 son, that we may eat it and die. 02:11.440 --> 02:12.880 Now this is in the middle of a famine. 02:13.520 --> 02:15.100 It hasn't rained in three years. 02:17.970 --> 02:22.050 I mean, at this point, it's probably two years, because he stays with them for a 02:22.050 --> 02:22.630 year or so. 02:23.230 --> 02:25.510 Maybe it's only one year, but it's an incredible drought. 02:26.070 --> 02:28.690 No water, and she's living in a landship. 02:28.770 --> 02:32.730 All she's got left from her stores is a little bit enough to make a meal for her 02:32.730 --> 02:33.610 son and her, and then that's it. 02:33.710 --> 02:34.610 They don't have anything else to eat. 02:36.570 --> 02:39.230 Then Elijah said to her, Do not fear. 02:40.770 --> 02:46.190 Do as you have said, but make me a little bread cake first from it, and bring it out 02:46.190 --> 02:49.170 to me, and afterward you may make one for yourself and for your son. 02:50.950 --> 02:54.570 For thus says the Lord God of Israel, The bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, 02:55.170 --> 02:59.050 nor shall the jar of oil be empty until the day that the Lord sends rain on the 02:59.050 --> 02:59.650 face of the earth. 03:00.730 --> 03:04.170 So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she and he and her 03:04.170 --> 03:05.410 household ate for many days. 03:06.090 --> 03:09.470 The bowl of flour was not exhausted, nor did the jar of oil become empty 03:09.470 --> 03:13.890 according to the word of Elijah, the word of the Lord, which he spoke 03:13.890 --> 03:14.490 through Elijah. 03:17.650 --> 03:20.030 Now, how rude can you get, right? 03:21.930 --> 03:28.990 Now God has already told him, I have commanded a widow to provide for you, 03:29.050 --> 03:29.630 in verse 9. 03:33.730 --> 03:38.550 And he comes to her, and this is the way God is going to provide for her, 03:38.550 --> 03:44.670 by giving him the first cake from the last meal that she has. 03:48.820 --> 03:54.420 I find that when we are exhausted, that when we have nothing left to give, 03:54.500 --> 04:00.000 when we have absolutely the last bottom of the jar, that's when God will ask us for 04:00.000 --> 04:00.400 peace. 04:02.900 --> 04:06.800 When you're just about to fall asleep, that's when the counseling call will come 04:06.800 --> 04:07.020 in. 04:08.620 --> 04:09.140 That's true. 04:09.400 --> 04:11.960 When you have no more room, then God sends the people. 04:13.800 --> 04:16.140 When you have no more money, then the bills come in. 04:17.120 --> 04:18.560 This is the test of the Lord. 04:19.280 --> 04:21.780 We're going to end, this is real interesting, we're going to end this Bible 04:21.780 --> 04:25.000 study with an Old Testament test, and we're going to start, I'm sorry, 04:25.080 --> 04:27.080 we're going to start it with an Old Testament test, and we're going to end it 04:27.080 --> 04:29.740 with an Old Testament test, with a lot of New Testament scripture in between. 04:31.920 --> 04:33.740 This is an Old Testament test. 04:33.740 --> 04:36.300 You want to be provided for, widow? 04:36.800 --> 04:38.940 She's ready to die, what's she got to lose? 04:39.900 --> 04:40.900 You want to be provided for? 04:41.640 --> 04:45.180 God's going to use you to provide for me, but I'm going to do miracles in your 04:45.180 --> 04:45.380 midst. 04:45.820 --> 04:49.800 I think it's incredible, God says, I have commanded a widow to take care of 04:49.800 --> 04:50.000 you. 04:51.440 --> 04:53.740 I have commanded a widow to provide for you. 04:54.000 --> 04:55.260 Dig that, verse 9. 04:56.100 --> 04:57.780 The widow isn't going to provide for him. 05:00.840 --> 05:06.920 He goes there, she's got one bit of flour left, and he says, alright, you can 05:06.920 --> 05:11.040 provide for me out of a supernatural bowl of flour and a supernatural jar of oil, 05:11.420 --> 05:13.500 that always only has one serving left. 05:18.520 --> 05:20.820 First you must deny yourself and give it to me. 05:21.600 --> 05:22.800 Then I will eat. 05:22.920 --> 05:24.320 Every day will be a day of faith. 05:24.540 --> 05:26.240 You'll only have enough left for that day. 05:28.580 --> 05:30.160 But he swears to her. 05:31.160 --> 05:32.400 In verse 14. 05:34.060 --> 05:37.880 For thus says the Lord God of Israel, the bowl of flour shall not be exhausted, 05:38.000 --> 05:41.600 nor shall the jar of oil be empty until the day that the Lord sends rain on the 05:41.600 --> 05:42.200 face of the earth. 05:46.080 --> 05:48.880 Now there's a lot of New Testament scripture on this that we're going to go 05:48.880 --> 05:49.140 through. 05:50.340 --> 06:00.740 I think the amazing thing for us in the scriptures is that the only way for us to 06:00.740 --> 06:02.880 have anything is to give everything away. 06:04.320 --> 06:07.140 The only way to be exalted is to humble yourself. 06:07.280 --> 06:09.680 The only way to increase is to decrease. 06:11.280 --> 06:14.100 The only way to receive love is to give love. 06:15.820 --> 06:19.340 The only way to grow is to get smaller. 06:21.180 --> 06:26.380 The only way to be taken care of is to take care of somebody else. 06:27.940 --> 06:29.220 It's the rule of the kingdom. 06:30.960 --> 06:35.400 Somebody once said that hell was a place where there was food. 06:35.780 --> 06:39.820 There was a big table and all the people, there was a feast in front of them. 06:43.460 --> 06:46.220 And their arms had no joint at their elbow. 06:47.000 --> 06:49.380 They couldn't bring it to their thing. 06:49.680 --> 06:52.580 And there's this thing and they could carve the turkey and everything but they 06:52.580 --> 06:53.560 couldn't get it to their mouth. 06:55.060 --> 07:00.060 And they said heaven was the exact same scene with people whose arms couldn't bend 07:00.060 --> 07:01.920 either but they were feeding each other. 07:05.170 --> 07:10.150 The same situation that they were saying here, you feed me, I'll feed you. 07:13.390 --> 07:17.950 The only way, the only difference between those two things is selfishness and 07:17.950 --> 07:18.790 giving, sharing. 07:19.530 --> 07:21.010 The situation is exactly the same. 07:21.250 --> 07:25.790 You can have hell in a situation by having two people who are afraid to love and give 07:25.790 --> 07:26.390 to each other. 07:26.870 --> 07:29.610 By having people who are afraid to give themselves up. 07:30.850 --> 07:31.850 And that's hell. 07:32.770 --> 07:34.930 That's selfishness, that's hurt, that's anguish. 07:36.030 --> 07:39.170 And the same situation with the same amount of love and need. 07:41.070 --> 07:42.330 And they give to each other. 07:42.430 --> 07:44.790 Here is two people who have nothing to eat at all. 07:45.610 --> 07:47.290 She's got enough to live and he's got nothing. 07:48.250 --> 07:50.350 She's got just one last meal. 07:50.350 --> 07:56.730 Well, he says the only way you'll be provided for is if you give me a meal from 07:56.730 --> 07:57.670 that last meal first. 07:58.950 --> 08:00.570 And that's the rule of the kingdom. 08:01.970 --> 08:05.150 Okay, turn to Matthew 10, verse 37. 08:17.930 --> 08:19.570 You have that on the middle speed, right? 08:26.440 --> 08:27.420 Four hour speed, right? 08:27.520 --> 08:27.960 The middle one. 08:29.240 --> 08:31.940 Okay, Matthew 10, verse 37. 08:35.060 --> 08:38.060 He who loves father and mother more than me is not worthy of me. 08:38.560 --> 08:41.180 He who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 08:42.120 --> 08:45.980 He who does not take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. 08:46.880 --> 08:49.380 He who has found his life shall lose it. 08:50.320 --> 08:53.940 He who has lost his life for my sake shall find it. 08:54.780 --> 08:57.580 He who receives me, he who receives you, receives me. 08:57.680 --> 08:59.740 And he who receives me, receives him who sent me. 09:01.440 --> 09:06.600 Okay, the key there, he who has found his life shall lose it. 09:06.900 --> 09:09.860 That means he who tries to save his own life shall lose his life. 09:11.420 --> 09:12.720 Again, back to the widow. 09:13.640 --> 09:14.740 Do you want to be saved? 09:15.140 --> 09:16.780 Give away the last bit of your substance. 09:18.140 --> 09:24.820 Now, how this reads into our life is that we need to be continually laying our lives 09:24.820 --> 09:25.560 down for each other. 09:25.560 --> 09:30.040 Continually thinking about how we can make the other person in our lives life better. 09:30.820 --> 09:35.220 And if we're always worried about what's in it for me and why, I mean, even reading 09:35.220 --> 09:38.280 it into our life here, whether it be the schedule or the job, you know, 09:38.340 --> 09:42.380 why is it that I'm always making the salad? 09:42.980 --> 09:45.160 Why do they have me cutting the onions all the time? 09:46.060 --> 09:48.460 Well, that might be the nastiest job in the kitchen. 09:48.560 --> 09:50.500 Be grateful that you're able to do it. 09:50.920 --> 09:53.140 So somebody else doesn't have to do it. 09:53.660 --> 09:55.200 You're benefiting somebody else. 09:55.760 --> 09:59.700 If we would think of the body instead of us, if we would think of the whole, 10:00.160 --> 10:02.040 we would be glad to do the nasty job. 10:02.980 --> 10:08.820 I'm sure you're glad when the grease is on your hands instead of your face. 10:09.820 --> 10:14.040 You know, when you're working with something greasy and all of a sudden 10:14.040 --> 10:15.960 somebody says, Hey, you have grease on your nose. 10:16.280 --> 10:18.980 And you look down and you had it on your hand and you rubbed your nose. 10:19.480 --> 10:21.520 And now you can't see your nose, but you can see your hand. 10:21.520 --> 10:26.760 I'm sure your whole mind is grateful when you realize you didn't rub your face and 10:26.760 --> 10:28.740 you see the grease and you catch it first on your hand. 10:29.080 --> 10:31.840 Now, if your hand had a mind of its own, it wouldn't be grateful. 10:34.120 --> 10:36.420 It wouldn't be grateful that it had grease on it. 10:37.100 --> 10:38.140 Boy, I'm sure glad. 10:38.240 --> 10:38.860 Well, I'm not. 10:39.300 --> 10:40.420 I've got grease on me. 10:40.680 --> 10:43.680 Well, that's the way the body has to be acting. 10:44.540 --> 10:49.780 I'm glad I got the grease instead of the more honorable part of the body, 10:49.860 --> 10:50.580 whatever that is. 10:52.240 --> 10:54.960 They said there's some parts of the body to honor and some to dishonor. 10:55.160 --> 10:56.320 We walk on our feet. 10:56.900 --> 10:58.580 It gets the brunt of weight. 10:58.840 --> 11:01.540 If we step on something, it gets hurt first. 11:02.800 --> 11:05.300 Our feet, if they had a mind of their own, wouldn't be grateful. 11:05.400 --> 11:07.020 They wish that we'd walk on our hands. 11:07.420 --> 11:09.440 So it could be up and you could shake feet with people. 11:10.800 --> 11:12.100 You could wave to people. 11:14.000 --> 11:16.880 But which part of your body gets more honor? 11:16.980 --> 11:17.740 Your feet or your hands? 11:17.980 --> 11:18.680 Your hands do. 11:19.460 --> 11:22.160 You cook, you sew, you work with it. 11:22.220 --> 11:23.720 You don't cook, sew, and work with your feet. 11:23.820 --> 11:25.140 You don't love with your feet. 11:25.320 --> 11:28.700 You don't go up to somebody and give them a foot rub with your foot on their back. 11:30.280 --> 11:34.440 The reason I'm saying this is that there is parts of the body that are supposedly, 11:35.320 --> 11:38.400 the Bible calls it, parts to dishonor and parts for honor. 11:39.140 --> 11:42.500 There are parts of your body that are covered up. 11:42.800 --> 11:46.000 No one ever sees, except your husband or wife. 11:47.820 --> 11:52.480 And those are for intimacy, those parts of the body. 11:53.260 --> 11:56.240 There are parts of the Christian body that no one ever sees. 11:56.960 --> 12:00.720 Only in the bridal love between the body and the Lord do they get exposed. 12:01.580 --> 12:08.300 Only when God is being worshipped and only when God is blessing and anointing are 12:08.300 --> 12:11.120 those parts of the body lifted up and shown. 12:12.400 --> 12:14.320 And God sees them only in private. 12:15.200 --> 12:18.760 That's why Jesus said, when you do your giving, give in private. 12:18.980 --> 12:22.560 For your Father sees thee in secret and rewards thee openly. 12:25.140 --> 12:28.480 Anyone who is married will tell you that there is intimate moments between a 12:28.480 --> 12:30.420 husband and a wife that they don't share with anybody. 12:31.060 --> 12:34.720 But it beams from their face during the day when they are doing other things. 12:34.720 --> 12:39.000 That love, that intimate fellowship between a husband and a wife. 12:40.500 --> 12:45.140 It's not sex that I'm talking about, it's the intimacy that's a part of it. 12:46.220 --> 12:50.720 That makes a man, a husband or a wife, at ease. 12:52.660 --> 12:56.100 He's not alarmed, he's thinking of his beloved or he's thinking of his mate. 12:56.820 --> 13:00.540 And he has a peace and a joy about that person, even though he's not with them. 13:01.060 --> 13:02.600 That is the way it is with Christians. 13:03.380 --> 13:07.480 And you probably, whoever you are, are probably a part of the body that's not 13:07.480 --> 13:09.620 getting as much honor as Billy Graham. 13:09.680 --> 13:13.020 Or not getting as much honor as somebody in the spotlight. 13:13.280 --> 13:17.480 Or an elder, or a group leader, or a team leader, or whatever it might be. 13:18.180 --> 13:21.280 And everybody sees them and they're the hand that's always getting shaken. 13:21.420 --> 13:23.320 And they're the hand that's always getting patted on the back. 13:23.580 --> 13:26.140 And they're the people that are always getting written about and talked about. 13:26.440 --> 13:28.220 And you're just not noticed at all. 13:29.020 --> 13:35.180 But if you remain intimate with God as part of the body, then God will honor you 13:35.180 --> 13:36.940 openly at the proper time. 13:39.600 --> 13:42.320 And it has to do with this losing your life. 13:42.440 --> 13:46.180 It has to do with this... the only way to find your life is to lose it. 13:46.520 --> 13:49.460 And I think that there needs to be... 13:49.460 --> 13:51.620 This Bible study is not a rebuke. 13:52.320 --> 13:54.240 This Bible study is a remembrance. 13:54.540 --> 13:57.200 And it's for me... it's more for me than any of you. 13:57.900 --> 14:04.180 As I read through this, as I'm teaching this, nobody needs to be humbled more than 14:04.180 --> 14:05.440 those that are in the public eye. 14:05.600 --> 14:09.520 Nobody needs to be at the foot of the cross more than those who are being given 14:09.520 --> 14:12.240 honor, or being given esteem, or being given attention. 14:12.720 --> 14:14.640 Those are the people that need to be the humblest. 14:14.740 --> 14:18.300 Because if they're not, they're doomed to fall. 14:18.960 --> 14:21.580 And everybody that's depending on them is doomed to fall with them. 14:22.700 --> 14:24.960 Matthew 13, verse 44. 14:38.360 --> 14:39.960 Matthew 13, verse 44. 14:40.120 --> 14:44.900 The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field which a man found and 14:44.900 --> 14:45.120 hid. 14:45.500 --> 14:50.100 And from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys the field. 14:51.080 --> 14:53.880 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls. 14:54.540 --> 14:58.800 And upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and 14:58.800 --> 14:59.240 bought it. 15:03.000 --> 15:05.780 Now, what is it that you seek from the Christian life, really? 15:06.800 --> 15:09.600 I mean, a lot of people that are Christians were losers. 15:09.960 --> 15:13.240 In fact, most Christians today were losers in the world. 15:13.660 --> 15:16.680 And they traded in a losing life for what they hoped would be a winning life. 15:17.280 --> 15:18.420 That's not salvation. 15:19.240 --> 15:22.300 That might be something that will spark you to get saved. 15:22.760 --> 15:26.700 That might be something that will put a desire in your heart to meet the Lord. 15:26.700 --> 15:30.400 But that is, I think, the bulk of the testimonies you hear. 15:30.820 --> 15:31.740 I had nothing. 15:32.120 --> 15:33.760 I was down and out. 15:33.860 --> 15:34.800 I was this and that. 15:36.580 --> 15:38.820 And my testimony is very much like that, too. 15:39.340 --> 15:41.500 And that's really not serving the Lord. 15:41.620 --> 15:43.940 That might be meeting the Lord, but it's not serving the Lord. 15:44.440 --> 15:45.700 I didn't have any happiness. 15:45.880 --> 15:46.880 I was unfulfilled. 15:47.020 --> 15:49.060 And I met Jesus, and since then things have been wonderful. 15:50.480 --> 15:52.740 That's the attraction between a man and a woman. 15:52.800 --> 15:53.740 That is not a marriage. 15:54.920 --> 15:58.160 I was lonely, and I met her, and my life has changed. 15:58.940 --> 16:00.660 She has just thrilled my heart. 16:00.820 --> 16:01.680 That is not a marriage. 16:01.800 --> 16:02.560 That's attraction. 16:02.760 --> 16:05.280 That's the spark that might bring two people together. 16:05.480 --> 16:06.940 That is not commitment. 16:07.140 --> 16:08.340 That is not relationship. 16:10.360 --> 16:13.860 People today are so emotional-minded. 16:14.040 --> 16:16.800 People today are so... they need to be fulfilled. 16:16.980 --> 16:18.620 They need to have all their goodies. 16:21.200 --> 16:25.200 And it's just not like that in a man-woman relationship, and it's not like that 16:25.200 --> 16:26.220 between Christ and the Church. 16:26.460 --> 16:28.120 You can be attracted to Jesus. 16:28.260 --> 16:28.980 I have nothing. 16:29.060 --> 16:30.020 Now I can have everything. 16:30.160 --> 16:31.320 Alright, that's valid. 16:32.800 --> 16:36.820 Then he's going to say, alright, you really want everything? 16:37.060 --> 16:37.880 Give up everything. 16:38.440 --> 16:40.620 A man found a treasure hidden in the field. 16:40.920 --> 16:42.840 He sold all that he had so he could get it. 16:43.040 --> 16:44.820 He gave up everything to have it. 16:47.660 --> 16:49.580 Well, it's easy to give up. 16:49.640 --> 16:53.480 As Winky Pratt, he says, you know, you say, I gave up smoking, I gave up 16:53.480 --> 16:55.380 drinking, I gave up fornicating, I gave up drugs. 16:55.740 --> 16:57.600 It's easy to give up your wrongs. 16:59.040 --> 17:00.580 But have you given up your rights? 17:02.400 --> 17:03.800 Giving up your wrongs is easy. 17:03.860 --> 17:05.160 Those things are killing you anyway. 17:05.260 --> 17:08.220 You didn't do God any favors by giving up things that are sending you to hell. 17:10.620 --> 17:13.380 God is impressed when you give up the things you love. 17:15.320 --> 17:18.180 It was one thing for Abraham to send Ishmael away. 17:19.180 --> 17:21.980 It was another thing for him to put Isaac on the altar. 17:25.160 --> 17:27.760 He had to give up his wrong by getting rid of Ishmael. 17:27.920 --> 17:30.620 Then he had to give up his right by getting rid of Isaac. 17:31.660 --> 17:32.660 Put him on the altar. 17:32.980 --> 17:34.540 Offer him as a burnt offering. 17:34.700 --> 17:37.860 There couldn't be anything more distasteful to a father to do. 17:37.860 --> 17:39.400 Nothing could be worse. 17:39.580 --> 17:39.900 Nothing. 17:40.600 --> 17:42.320 Absolutely nothing could have been worse. 17:42.560 --> 17:46.660 He'd rather cut his own head off with a machete than to burn his own son. 17:50.110 --> 17:54.690 Giving up the things that are killing you is a favor to yourself. 17:56.290 --> 17:59.670 Nobody ever did God a favor by getting saved. 18:00.370 --> 18:00.830 Nobody. 18:03.510 --> 18:08.610 It's when you are saved and you are beautiful Isaacs that God has given you 18:08.610 --> 18:15.850 your talents, your riches, your future, your images of what you should have as a 18:15.850 --> 18:16.470 human being. 18:17.230 --> 18:18.110 Your rights. 18:18.370 --> 18:19.250 What I could be. 18:20.110 --> 18:21.770 I could be making such and such. 18:21.850 --> 18:22.970 I could be a so and so. 18:23.050 --> 18:24.630 I have the talent to do this and that. 18:26.710 --> 18:27.890 I could be writing books. 18:27.970 --> 18:28.810 I could be making records. 18:28.810 --> 18:31.870 I could be a great chef. 18:32.050 --> 18:34.050 I could be married by now. 18:34.130 --> 18:36.130 I should have married that guy instead of coming to this place. 18:36.310 --> 18:37.090 Or whatever it was. 18:39.290 --> 18:40.490 I have four kids. 18:40.570 --> 18:40.930 Do the lot. 18:40.990 --> 18:41.970 I'm glad I'm here. 18:45.840 --> 18:47.780 Your rights is what God gives you. 18:47.880 --> 18:49.900 Your wrongs, you can get rid of those yourself. 18:50.420 --> 18:51.340 If you are smart enough. 18:51.860 --> 18:54.120 There are people in the world that use self-hypnosis. 18:54.320 --> 18:55.900 In Eastern stuff. 18:55.960 --> 18:56.800 They gave up drugs. 18:56.920 --> 18:57.300 They gave up fornication. 18:58.000 --> 18:59.160 They knew those things were killing them. 18:59.160 --> 19:01.160 You can give those things up without the Lord. 19:01.280 --> 19:03.940 You can't give up yourself without the Lord. 19:04.340 --> 19:05.020 You can't. 19:05.380 --> 19:06.220 It's impossible. 19:06.980 --> 19:09.220 Because all you do is benefit yourself. 19:09.700 --> 19:12.100 Unless you give yourself up for the Lord. 19:12.760 --> 19:17.680 The man found a treasure and he got rid of everything he had to possess this 19:17.680 --> 19:17.960 treasure. 19:18.320 --> 19:19.280 What is the treasure? 19:20.960 --> 19:21.740 What is it? 19:26.030 --> 19:26.930 What's the treasure? 19:28.350 --> 19:29.290 What's the treasure? 19:29.970 --> 19:31.910 Jesus is the treasure. 19:33.790 --> 19:34.790 Jesus is the treasure. 19:35.670 --> 19:37.370 I am the resurrection and the life. 19:37.530 --> 19:38.250 I am the way. 19:38.370 --> 19:39.010 I am the truth. 19:39.130 --> 19:39.750 I am the life. 19:40.650 --> 19:41.570 He is the bridegroom. 19:42.530 --> 19:43.310 Who is the treasure? 19:43.430 --> 19:43.710 Jesus. 19:48.460 --> 19:50.020 You can't have him. 19:50.040 --> 19:51.460 If you have any of yourself. 19:51.940 --> 19:53.260 You can have part of him. 19:53.360 --> 19:54.540 You can be on your way. 19:54.620 --> 19:55.460 You can be growing. 19:55.820 --> 19:58.880 You can be going step by step on the Christian installment plan. 19:58.880 --> 20:04.580 But you better, you'll always be making payments until you have that experience 20:04.580 --> 20:08.100 where God karate chops you behind the knees and you're on your face. 20:08.600 --> 20:13.060 And the best thing to get you there is to give up the things you love the most. 20:13.840 --> 20:14.840 Your dreams. 20:15.880 --> 20:16.940 Your ideals. 20:18.040 --> 20:20.140 The things that you always wanted out of life. 20:20.680 --> 20:21.280 Throw them away. 20:23.940 --> 20:27.900 You know, I always wanted to live in Colorado. 20:27.900 --> 20:30.400 I don't know why, I just always wanted to live in Colorado. 20:31.340 --> 20:38.220 And I wanted to have a ranch up in Colorado with a recording studio and a 20:38.220 --> 20:38.680 Learjet. 20:41.080 --> 20:46.060 So that I could go up there and do all my records and I could fly to LA or fly out 20:46.060 --> 20:47.280 and do concerts and come back. 20:47.600 --> 20:52.600 That would be a little paradise away from everything else. 20:52.860 --> 20:54.300 Just my family and my friends. 20:54.300 --> 20:56.000 This was in B.C. 20:56.100 --> 20:56.380 days. 20:56.620 --> 20:58.460 Just going up there and partying and so on. 20:58.480 --> 20:59.780 That was my dream. 21:00.980 --> 21:05.400 And then when I became a Christian, all I had to do was get rid of the drugs 21:05.400 --> 21:07.200 and the party and put the Bible studies in. 21:07.820 --> 21:12.660 And I could still have the ranch in Colorado and the recording studio and the 21:12.660 --> 21:12.960 Learjet. 21:13.600 --> 21:16.880 And everybody would say how blessed God had blessed me if I did it. 21:16.980 --> 21:18.900 It would be totally acceptable in the body. 21:19.920 --> 21:20.920 That's the crazy thing. 21:20.920 --> 21:24.580 We have a Christianity where you can have anything you want to and just put 21:24.580 --> 21:25.640 Christian labels on it. 21:25.880 --> 21:27.000 That's not Christianity. 21:28.500 --> 21:30.960 You can have anything you want to and put Christian labels on it. 21:31.020 --> 21:34.980 You can say I have a burden for this and I feel led to do this and whatever. 21:35.180 --> 21:39.440 And you can still Christianize your selfishness. 21:42.980 --> 21:45.120 You can stamp a dove and a fish on it. 21:45.860 --> 21:46.580 You know? 21:48.800 --> 21:52.820 And God is not impressed with your dove and your fish. 21:53.840 --> 21:56.180 He is impressed with nothing more than the heart. 21:56.820 --> 21:58.020 A heart after Him. 21:58.540 --> 22:02.300 A heart that when finds the pearl, sells everything He has. 22:02.600 --> 22:07.020 He sells everything He has to buy it. 22:08.680 --> 22:09.840 That's self-denial. 22:10.020 --> 22:10.900 That is everything. 22:11.040 --> 22:12.920 It doesn't say He sold most of what He had. 22:14.300 --> 22:18.200 There is a story that I read once about a guy. 22:18.300 --> 22:19.260 I think Winky tells this. 22:21.340 --> 22:23.420 A guy comes into the pearl shop, right? 22:23.560 --> 22:24.400 He is a pearl collector. 22:24.960 --> 22:27.380 And there is a pearl the size of a globe in the front. 22:31.610 --> 22:35.190 And the guy goes, I have been looking for a pearl like that all my life. 22:35.270 --> 22:35.990 I have collected pearls. 22:36.230 --> 22:37.610 What does that pearl cost? 22:37.710 --> 22:39.070 Oh, it's very expensive. 22:40.490 --> 22:41.790 Well, how much does it cost? 22:42.070 --> 22:43.410 You probably couldn't afford it. 22:44.710 --> 22:46.070 Well, how much is it? 22:46.450 --> 22:47.490 Everything you've got. 22:48.610 --> 22:49.710 Is that all? 22:50.330 --> 22:51.350 Is that it? 22:51.890 --> 22:52.750 Well, that's great. 22:53.290 --> 22:54.170 What have you got? 22:55.310 --> 22:56.790 Oh, I don't know. 22:56.890 --> 22:57.370 Open up my wallet. 22:58.490 --> 22:59.010 $117. 22:59.530 --> 22:59.930 All right. 23:00.230 --> 23:00.890 What else have you got? 23:05.970 --> 23:08.370 Well, I've got a check here in my bank account. 23:08.630 --> 23:13.510 There's $40,000, $50,000 I've saved in stocks and bonds. 23:13.590 --> 23:14.250 All right, write a check. 23:14.350 --> 23:15.410 $40,000. 23:16.070 --> 23:17.350 Sign over your stocks and bonds. 23:17.470 --> 23:17.650 Okay. 23:17.790 --> 23:18.350 What else have you got? 23:19.210 --> 23:20.530 Well, that's all I've got. 23:21.570 --> 23:26.330 I mean, you know, I don't even have much left to make my house payment with. 23:26.650 --> 23:27.590 Oh, you have a house. 23:29.490 --> 23:30.690 Yeah, I have a house. 23:31.270 --> 23:32.450 All right, we'll take that. 23:33.130 --> 23:34.930 Where do you want my wife and I to live? 23:34.990 --> 23:35.490 In our car? 23:36.150 --> 23:36.990 Oh, you have a car. 23:38.930 --> 23:39.750 Yeah, two of them. 23:39.970 --> 23:40.490 Two cars. 23:42.570 --> 23:47.910 Well, where do you want my wife and children to go out in the cold? 23:48.170 --> 23:49.330 Oh, you have wife and children. 23:50.370 --> 23:51.050 One wife. 23:51.130 --> 23:51.530 How many children? 23:51.750 --> 23:52.090 Three. 23:52.270 --> 23:52.750 Three children. 23:57.530 --> 23:59.210 Oh, you expect me to live alone? 23:59.310 --> 24:00.230 Oh, yes, you too. 24:01.650 --> 24:02.550 That's the whole thing. 24:02.630 --> 24:05.790 People, when they think God wants everything, they stop short. 24:06.610 --> 24:07.910 They think He wants my money. 24:08.050 --> 24:10.190 They think, well, He wants this and that. 24:10.250 --> 24:11.950 But He wants everything. 24:12.330 --> 24:13.850 It has to be under the blood. 24:14.150 --> 24:15.490 Everything has got to be committed. 24:17.050 --> 24:18.770 You can't think of just money. 24:18.850 --> 24:20.350 You can't think of what I could be doing. 24:20.350 --> 24:25.170 You can't think of who you could be or what you're hoped to be or any other 24:25.170 --> 24:25.330 thing. 24:25.370 --> 24:26.510 It's got to be everything. 24:30.700 --> 24:30.940 Okay. 24:34.720 --> 24:35.560 Luke 12. 24:38.140 --> 24:38.580 36. 24:56.310 --> 24:57.670 Starting at 35. 25:00.910 --> 25:01.910 Luke 12, 35. 25:02.050 --> 25:04.290 Be dressed in readiness and keep your lamps alight. 25:04.910 --> 25:08.050 And be like men who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding 25:08.050 --> 25:08.410 feast. 25:08.410 --> 25:12.330 So that they may immediately open the door to him when he comes anock. 25:13.170 --> 25:16.810 Blessed are those slaves whom the master shall find on the other when he comes. 25:17.190 --> 25:21.570 Truly I say to you that he will gird himself to serve and have them recline at 25:21.570 --> 25:24.110 table and will come up and wait on them. 25:25.610 --> 25:29.910 Now, this goes with the scripture in Luke 17. 25:30.130 --> 25:31.870 I just want you to read that first. 25:31.870 --> 25:38.890 It says that when we're with Jesus, it says that he will gird himself, 25:39.150 --> 25:41.470 have them recline at table, and will come up and wait on them. 25:41.670 --> 25:43.070 Now, this might just be a parable. 25:44.150 --> 25:45.430 It also might be literal. 25:46.170 --> 25:50.090 At the wedding feast, Jesus might come up and say, what would you like? 25:51.170 --> 25:52.190 That's incredible. 25:53.310 --> 25:58.970 The king, the master, will gird himself to serve and have them recline at table and 25:58.970 --> 26:00.610 will come up and wait on them. 26:01.230 --> 26:03.270 Now, this goes with Luke 17. 26:03.330 --> 26:04.270 Turn to Luke 17. 26:05.670 --> 26:06.870 And we'll come back to this. 26:08.030 --> 26:10.370 Luke 17, verse 7. 26:17.730 --> 26:21.510 But which of you having a slave plowing or tending sheep will say to him when he has 26:21.510 --> 26:25.710 come in from the field, come immediately and sit down to eat? 26:26.310 --> 26:29.430 But will he not say to him, prepare something for me to eat, and properly 26:29.430 --> 26:33.010 clothe yourself and serve me until I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will 26:33.010 --> 26:33.590 eat and drink? 26:34.410 --> 26:37.790 He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, 26:37.930 --> 26:38.190 does he? 26:38.830 --> 26:42.830 So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded, you say, we are 26:42.830 --> 26:43.850 unworthy slaves. 26:44.230 --> 26:46.670 We have done only that which we ought to have done. 26:47.670 --> 26:50.730 Now, that is the attitude when you serve God. 26:51.450 --> 26:52.870 I'm just doing what I'm supposed to do. 26:53.130 --> 26:56.230 Remember Paul said, I don't have any reward for preaching the gospel. 26:56.630 --> 26:58.690 Woe is me if I don't preach the gospel. 27:00.710 --> 27:04.250 My reward is that when I preach the gospel, I offer it without charge. 27:05.410 --> 27:06.690 But think of that, think of that. 27:06.750 --> 27:11.630 It's like, whether it be Kevin on the press, or whether it be Julie Lynn in the 27:11.630 --> 27:16.710 track department, or whether it be Carol up in the office, or Terry in the art 27:16.710 --> 27:18.930 department, or whoever you are in this ministry. 27:20.090 --> 27:23.950 If that's where God has you, you don't get a reward for doing those things. 27:24.030 --> 27:24.850 Not at all. 27:24.850 --> 27:27.810 I don't get a reward for playing the piano and singing. 27:30.430 --> 27:31.610 Woe is me if I don't. 27:32.270 --> 27:34.090 Woe is you if you don't draw pictures. 27:34.350 --> 27:38.350 It's not that that gets us a reward. 27:38.570 --> 27:42.210 It's serving God in everything we do with a proper heart. 27:43.210 --> 27:44.470 It isn't the deeds. 27:45.170 --> 27:49.050 God isn't going to give art points for him, and car points for him, and music 27:49.050 --> 27:49.730 points for me. 27:49.950 --> 27:51.470 God isn't impressed with my songs. 27:51.530 --> 27:52.770 He's got better music in heaven. 27:54.430 --> 27:58.770 God isn't impressed with any of us and what we do. 27:58.850 --> 28:00.910 He's impressed with how we do it. 28:02.750 --> 28:05.850 He isn't impressed that this guy is out tending sheep. 28:06.330 --> 28:07.270 He isn't impressed. 28:08.250 --> 28:10.750 He isn't impressed that he comes in and cooks him a meal. 28:11.050 --> 28:15.710 He's impressed that the guy says, I'm doing all I'm supposed to do. 28:15.790 --> 28:16.650 This is wonderful. 28:18.090 --> 28:19.610 He isn't patting himself on the back. 28:19.690 --> 28:20.970 I'm just an unworthy slave. 28:20.970 --> 28:22.510 That's the best slave there is. 28:23.430 --> 28:28.910 And yet, to tie it into Luke 12 that we just read. 28:29.070 --> 28:30.230 I'm sorry, yeah, Luke 12. 28:30.490 --> 28:32.910 It says, He is going to wait on us. 28:37.930 --> 28:41.170 The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve. 28:43.850 --> 28:45.090 And to prove it. 28:47.770 --> 28:50.050 In John 13, turn to John 13. 28:59.180 --> 29:00.040 Verse 3. 29:01.100 --> 29:02.800 John 13, verse 3. 29:03.100 --> 29:07.680 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had 29:07.680 --> 29:09.660 come forth from God and was going back to God. 29:09.720 --> 29:11.340 That's an interesting start. 29:12.100 --> 29:16.320 Rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and taking a towel, girded himself about. 29:16.560 --> 29:20.680 Then he poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to 29:20.680 --> 29:23.000 wipe them with the towel with which he was girded. 29:26.990 --> 29:28.130 He dressed as a slave. 29:28.130 --> 29:31.910 He took off his clothes and put a towel on, the way a foot slave would be girded. 29:34.450 --> 29:37.270 And then used the towel that was around him. 29:37.270 --> 29:38.830 I mean, it's a pretty big towel. 29:39.530 --> 29:40.770 To start wiping their feet with. 29:43.750 --> 29:47.670 Not only did he say he's going to serve, but he showed his disciples he was going 29:47.670 --> 29:48.750 to serve the night he died. 29:51.090 --> 29:53.530 He says, Now the hour has come for me to be glorified. 29:53.610 --> 29:54.890 Not until I wash your feet. 29:57.690 --> 29:58.650 He goes on. 29:59.270 --> 30:01.370 So he came to Simon Peter in verse 6. 30:02.090 --> 30:05.150 And said to him, And Peter says to him, Lord, do you wash my feet? 30:05.230 --> 30:09.810 Jesus said, What I do you do not realize now, but you shall understand later. 30:10.070 --> 30:10.570 Thank you. 30:10.910 --> 30:13.230 Peter said to him, Never shall you wash my feet. 30:13.810 --> 30:16.810 Jesus answered him, If I don't wash your feet, you have no part in me. 30:17.390 --> 30:20.250 Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and my 30:20.250 --> 30:20.610 head. 30:22.030 --> 30:24.610 He's the guy that opened his mouth and changed feet all the time. 30:30.160 --> 30:31.420 He came to serve. 30:31.660 --> 30:35.440 Yet our attitude, he says, must be... 30:35.440 --> 30:38.800 And when we do what we are commanded, we are to say we are only unworthy slaves 30:38.800 --> 30:40.340 doing what we are supposed to be doing. 30:41.800 --> 30:43.900 We don't deserve to live. 30:44.860 --> 30:47.040 With what we have done against God. 30:47.340 --> 30:49.620 With the lives we have lived for selfishness. 30:49.760 --> 30:51.960 We do not deserve another breath. 30:52.280 --> 30:53.420 We deserve only hell. 30:53.700 --> 30:55.280 It's only God's grace that we're saved. 30:55.560 --> 30:57.720 We did not do anything to get saved. 30:57.720 --> 31:00.560 We did not turn around and go, Okay God, I promise I'm going to be a good 31:00.560 --> 31:00.920 boy now. 31:00.940 --> 31:01.980 And God says, Okay, I'll save you. 31:02.160 --> 31:07.620 It was that God saw that we were lost in our sins and He made provision for us. 31:07.720 --> 31:09.700 And then He offered us a way out. 31:09.780 --> 31:11.820 And we said, Come and get me. 31:12.220 --> 31:13.340 And He saved us. 31:13.380 --> 31:14.620 We didn't save ourselves. 31:14.760 --> 31:15.640 He saved us. 31:19.140 --> 31:20.780 And we've got to remember that. 31:20.840 --> 31:23.020 That we are on borrowed time. 31:24.400 --> 31:26.660 It's just like a man... You've heard this expression before. 31:26.660 --> 31:29.060 A guy, he gets healed of cancer, you know. 31:30.520 --> 31:33.640 He has an operation, they take out half of his lung and he says, I'm living on 31:33.640 --> 31:34.260 borrowed time. 31:34.340 --> 31:35.640 I should have been dead a year ago. 31:36.060 --> 31:38.280 All the time that I've had since then is borrowed time. 31:39.100 --> 31:41.220 You've all heard that expression, I live on borrowed time. 31:41.320 --> 31:42.180 Who did he borrow it from? 31:42.200 --> 31:42.800 From God. 31:44.160 --> 31:44.820 We're all. 31:46.240 --> 31:47.780 As they say, as Lenin said. 31:48.360 --> 31:52.260 Lenin, from the communists, said that communists were dead men on furlough. 31:54.400 --> 31:56.200 They were dead men on furlough. 31:58.200 --> 32:03.000 And I tell you that Christians are already to be living martyrs. 32:03.060 --> 32:03.980 They're already to be dead. 32:04.040 --> 32:05.420 You're already crucified with Christ. 32:05.680 --> 32:07.420 You've already been destroyed. 32:07.780 --> 32:12.880 There shouldn't be anything left in me of, you know, trying to build Keith's kingdom. 32:13.020 --> 32:14.580 Or trying to build up Keith Green. 32:14.680 --> 32:16.160 Or in you, trying to build up you. 32:16.400 --> 32:18.580 There's all got to be building up Jesus. 32:18.580 --> 32:22.060 There shouldn't be anything left in John the Baptist of trying to build up John the 32:22.060 --> 32:22.340 Baptist. 32:22.460 --> 32:25.120 He says, no, I shall decrease and he shall increase. 32:25.960 --> 32:29.340 There shouldn't be any looking to what we can gain from being in last days 32:29.340 --> 32:29.780 ministries. 32:29.860 --> 32:31.660 Or we can gain from being in this department. 32:32.000 --> 32:33.960 Or being the head of this, or the tail of that. 32:37.160 --> 32:38.320 It's got to be. 32:39.080 --> 32:40.460 We're trying to build up Christ. 32:40.600 --> 32:42.300 We're trying to expand his kingdom. 32:42.440 --> 32:43.380 We are serving him. 32:43.660 --> 32:46.540 I don't care if it's washing toilets. 32:46.620 --> 32:48.940 I want to be the best toilet washer in the universe. 32:49.500 --> 32:52.740 I want to clean the parts of the toilet no one will ever see, that God sees. 32:54.580 --> 32:56.940 I always remember that somebody told me that they were... 32:57.680 --> 32:59.360 He says, I was in a C.S. 32:59.360 --> 32:59.920 Lewis book. 33:00.680 --> 33:04.660 Has he ever thought about the wildflowers that are in the crags in the hills that no 33:04.660 --> 33:05.300 one ever sees? 33:05.380 --> 33:07.700 That just bloom, they're beautiful flowers that no one ever sees? 33:09.280 --> 33:10.920 He says, I meditated on that once. 33:10.980 --> 33:14.960 And after that, when I had bathroom duties, I used to polish the bottom of the 33:14.960 --> 33:15.220 toilet. 33:15.720 --> 33:17.680 The behind the toilet, I'd polish it. 33:19.400 --> 33:21.260 Sounds ridiculous, but it's... 33:21.260 --> 33:22.660 God sees the bottom of the toilet. 33:22.760 --> 33:25.140 Who are you polishing the toilet for, anyway? 33:25.780 --> 33:27.260 God sees everything, you know? 33:28.460 --> 33:29.880 And I've never forgotten that. 33:29.900 --> 33:35.020 And when I make the bed, my wife and I make the bed together, it drives me crazy 33:35.020 --> 33:38.720 when the sheet underneath isn't totally straight. 33:39.600 --> 33:42.380 If there's a wrinkle in it, you know, I still remember, well, God sees the 33:42.380 --> 33:42.580 wrinkle. 33:42.720 --> 33:46.120 We're not really making the bed right, because his eyes are under the blanket. 33:55.180 --> 33:56.400 Who do we make beds for? 33:56.500 --> 33:57.520 Who do we wash dishes for? 33:57.580 --> 33:58.620 Who do we clean toilets for? 33:58.940 --> 34:01.700 Is it so that people will go, boy, she's a great toilet cleaner? 34:02.120 --> 34:03.600 Well, they're never going to look behind the toilet. 34:05.140 --> 34:09.040 I think Wayne can tell you, in the service, they have what's called white 34:09.040 --> 34:09.880 glove inspection. 34:10.500 --> 34:15.600 You put on a white glove and go to the place behind the footlocker and run a 34:15.600 --> 34:18.840 white glove behind it and see if there's any dust back where nobody can look. 34:20.200 --> 34:22.060 They want everything spick and span. 34:22.180 --> 34:23.580 They do that at McDonald's, too, I hear. 34:26.280 --> 34:33.080 It's important that we realize that it's God who sees the back of our minds, 34:33.420 --> 34:35.440 the back of our toilets, the back of everything. 34:36.260 --> 34:40.180 And when we're given a job to do, we're to do it that he's the one we are to 34:40.180 --> 34:40.700 impress. 34:41.600 --> 34:44.460 And we are not to try to impress anyone but him. 34:45.200 --> 34:47.620 And if you can impress God, who else do you have to impress? 34:49.500 --> 34:52.700 And he, like any loving father, wants you to impress him. 34:53.540 --> 34:56.480 Not by impressing others, but just by impressing you. 35:00.340 --> 35:02.040 Okay, this is getting exciting. 35:03.020 --> 35:04.840 John 12, verse 24. 35:07.760 --> 35:08.720 Back a chapter. 35:09.420 --> 35:10.220 This is beautiful. 35:11.760 --> 35:15.920 Truly, truly, verse 24, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the 35:15.920 --> 35:18.480 earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. 35:19.180 --> 35:21.140 And if it dies, it bears much fruit. 35:21.920 --> 35:23.860 He who loves his life loses it. 35:24.000 --> 35:27.260 He who hates his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal. 35:28.560 --> 35:30.480 If anyone serves me, let him follow me. 35:30.520 --> 35:32.820 And where I am, there shall my servant also be. 35:32.880 --> 35:34.760 If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. 35:35.080 --> 35:36.240 Now, look at verse 25. 35:36.420 --> 35:37.780 That's a good memorization verse. 35:38.020 --> 35:39.620 We ought to write that up on the wall. 35:42.300 --> 35:44.680 He who loves his life loses it. 35:45.040 --> 35:49.880 This is different than, he who finds his life loses it, and he who loses it finds 35:49.880 --> 35:50.020 it. 35:50.020 --> 35:53.600 This is, he who loves his life, not just finds it, but loves it, 35:53.740 --> 35:54.240 loses it. 35:54.500 --> 35:58.980 He who hates his life in this world shall find it to life eternal. 36:01.980 --> 36:03.700 That's getting right down to it. 36:04.760 --> 36:07.260 Remember it says, he who loves father and mother more than me. 36:07.620 --> 36:10.640 He who does not deny father and mother. 36:10.840 --> 36:13.640 He who does not love me more than son. 36:13.760 --> 36:15.260 And then, even his own life. 36:15.620 --> 36:19.560 In another place it says, he who does not hate his father and mother, or his son and 36:19.560 --> 36:22.400 daughter, or his wife or husband, even his own life. 36:23.320 --> 36:26.540 The word hatred there means by comparison to God's love. 36:26.860 --> 36:28.220 Comparison for your love for God. 36:29.980 --> 36:31.100 What's important to you? 36:34.520 --> 36:36.160 You know, we had to go through a time. 36:36.960 --> 36:40.280 I went through a time when the newsletter was important to me, believe it or not. 36:42.040 --> 36:45.480 There was a time when opening the mail was important to me, two and a half, 36:45.560 --> 36:46.060 three years ago. 36:49.320 --> 36:52.800 And now I find that I've got to keep my interest in the newsletter up. 36:54.820 --> 36:58.100 It's not so much that God is so important to me. 36:58.180 --> 37:03.940 It's just that I have had my heart and my treasure in so many things in my life. 37:05.420 --> 37:09.220 I think the hardest thing to give up my treasure right now is my kids. 37:09.460 --> 37:10.860 I treasure my kids a lot. 37:12.720 --> 37:16.780 First it was music, and then it was fellowship in Bible study. 37:17.040 --> 37:18.520 Anything but God is wrong. 37:19.200 --> 37:24.060 And then it was ministry and concerts, and then it was the community and the 37:24.060 --> 37:24.460 newsletter. 37:25.560 --> 37:27.420 And then it was administration and so on. 37:28.060 --> 37:30.640 Now it's the children and... 37:32.340 --> 37:40.400 I guess it's the kids and indecision about what to do in the future. 37:42.220 --> 37:44.400 But after a while you kind of get the hang of it. 37:44.540 --> 37:48.060 After a while you get something in your hand and God slaps your hand and you let 37:48.060 --> 37:48.440 it go. 37:49.020 --> 37:51.440 And then you get something else in your hand and he slaps your hand and you let it 37:51.440 --> 37:51.680 go. 37:52.100 --> 37:54.520 And then you get something else in your hand and before he can slap you, 37:54.600 --> 37:55.120 you let it go. 37:55.120 --> 37:57.380 You get used to letting things go. 37:57.520 --> 37:58.460 It becomes a habit. 37:59.380 --> 38:02.520 You see your heart loving something and you immediately know there's danger 38:02.520 --> 38:04.620 because a hand is going to come out of the sky and slap you. 38:07.020 --> 38:11.400 And he slaps you lovingly, like you would if your kid had a scorpion in his hand. 38:11.500 --> 38:13.160 You'd slap his hand, get rid of that scorpion. 38:13.220 --> 38:14.780 You wouldn't say, please let go of the scorpion. 38:15.960 --> 38:16.560 Why daddy? 38:16.720 --> 38:18.080 Well, here's a book. 38:18.140 --> 38:19.380 Read this book on scorpions. 38:21.340 --> 38:28.760 I can't understand these parents that have children that are six months old or eight 38:28.760 --> 38:31.240 months old or nine months old and the kid only understands one thing. 38:33.860 --> 38:37.240 And they pick the kid up and they start explaining to this nine month old why they 38:37.240 --> 38:38.380 can't touch the wall socket. 38:38.600 --> 38:39.880 That can really hurt you. 38:40.800 --> 38:42.080 The kid doesn't understand. 38:42.240 --> 38:45.900 He just understands pain and rebuke and encouragement. 38:46.160 --> 38:46.840 That's about it. 38:46.840 --> 38:49.300 And it's even more the tone of voice than what you're saying. 38:50.440 --> 38:53.800 The greatest thing was when Josiah hit the age of reason, when I could sit down and 38:53.800 --> 38:57.600 explain to him why he's not supposed to ask why when I say no. 38:59.200 --> 39:00.480 So it was wonderful. 39:01.100 --> 39:04.880 And it was just wonderful when I realized I didn't have to keep dealing with, 39:05.040 --> 39:09.500 at that point, when if I said no, you can't do it, and he asked why he got a 39:09.500 --> 39:09.800 spanking. 39:09.800 --> 39:14.800 And another time, he asked me... 39:18.700 --> 39:21.500 He says, can we go somewhere or something? 39:21.600 --> 39:22.320 And I said, yes. 39:22.440 --> 39:23.620 And he turned around and said, why? 39:26.240 --> 39:28.380 He says, I can say why when you say yes, right? 39:31.560 --> 39:33.520 But I can say why when you say no, right? 39:41.840 --> 39:45.220 I said, yeah, you won't get a spanking if you ask why when I say yes. 39:45.280 --> 39:46.920 And he said, you can ask why about anything. 39:47.040 --> 39:48.540 You just can't ask why when I say no. 39:49.760 --> 39:51.880 You can't question me when I say no. 39:52.620 --> 39:54.700 Because I'll tell you why when I say no. 39:54.740 --> 39:56.320 You can't do that because of that, and that's it. 39:57.300 --> 39:57.920 So it was real. 39:58.180 --> 40:02.340 When they reach the age of reason, it's not any more pain, rebuke, 40:02.420 --> 40:02.940 and encouragement. 40:03.080 --> 40:03.720 It's explanation. 40:04.900 --> 40:08.440 And in the Christian walk, there's a time when God doesn't explain because it 40:08.440 --> 40:09.680 doesn't make a lot of sense. 40:09.680 --> 40:12.480 It doesn't make sense to give up something you love. 40:13.180 --> 40:14.880 It's easy to give up something you hate. 40:15.160 --> 40:18.220 It doesn't make sense to give up something that is benefiting you. 40:21.020 --> 40:23.560 Except it's competing with God. 40:24.900 --> 40:26.900 God is more jealous than you know. 40:27.600 --> 40:30.940 Because he's jealous for our good, and the best thing for us is to have God 40:30.940 --> 40:31.580 one and only. 40:32.440 --> 40:33.000 And that's the whole thing. 40:33.040 --> 40:34.760 He's not as jealous in a selfish way. 40:34.760 --> 40:39.920 He's jealous with us the way a Godly husband is jealous of a wife. 40:40.060 --> 40:41.880 Or a father is jealous over his children. 40:42.020 --> 40:45.920 That he doesn't want anybody hurting his children, or deceiving his children, 40:46.040 --> 40:47.040 or misleading his children. 40:47.320 --> 40:49.180 So he's jealous for their good. 40:50.600 --> 40:54.100 And God knows the best for us is to love him with everything that's in us. 40:55.140 --> 40:58.180 Therefore, whenever we start loving something else, he's jealous for us 40:58.180 --> 40:59.140 because it's harming us. 40:59.220 --> 41:01.080 Not because he ain't getting all the glory. 41:01.820 --> 41:06.300 It's because it's not for our benefit, it's not for his benefit, which is not for 41:06.300 --> 41:06.820 our benefit. 41:07.000 --> 41:10.220 And when he doesn't get the glory, it destroys us. 41:11.380 --> 41:14.740 We think it feels good for a while when we get the glory, but it kills us. 41:18.860 --> 41:19.760 Memorize that scripture. 41:19.940 --> 41:21.400 He who loves his life loses it. 41:21.480 --> 41:24.040 He who hates his life in this world shall keep it till life eternal. 41:26.920 --> 41:28.880 Okay, Luke 17, verse 7. 41:29.360 --> 41:30.440 Oh, we've already gone there, sorry. 41:31.660 --> 41:33.380 Luke 21, verse 2. 41:42.760 --> 41:43.440 Verse 1. 41:43.620 --> 41:44.500 Luke 21, 1. 41:47.460 --> 41:50.940 And he looked up and he saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury. 41:52.420 --> 41:55.480 And he saw a certain poor widow putting in two small copper coins. 41:56.340 --> 41:59.240 And he said, Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of 41:59.240 --> 41:59.440 them. 41:59.980 --> 42:01.340 Now, can you imagine that? 42:02.260 --> 42:07.320 Here comes, you know, Mayor Sadie's, you know, the mayor of Jerusalem. 42:07.500 --> 42:11.440 He's coming down there and he's writing out a $40,000 check, you know, 42:11.580 --> 42:12.280 putting it in. 42:16.220 --> 42:20.120 Hi, I have a $40,000 cashier's check. 42:22.040 --> 42:25.160 Oh yeah, the next guy comes in, he writes a $60,000 check, you know. 42:25.460 --> 42:26.480 They're all standing in line. 42:26.480 --> 42:31.300 Yes, yes, I've paid 25% this year. 42:31.420 --> 42:35.140 I pledge it to the temple treasury television fund. 42:35.840 --> 42:39.480 Okay, and then here comes, you know, this little widow. 42:39.700 --> 42:41.780 She's dressed in rags and she's got two cents. 42:42.620 --> 42:43.260 She puts it in. 42:43.360 --> 42:44.180 Get out of the way! 42:44.340 --> 42:46.160 You know, we've got more important gifts today. 42:47.400 --> 42:51.760 And Jesus turns and says to the disciples, She's put in more than all of them 42:51.760 --> 42:52.440 combined. 42:53.480 --> 42:53.880 Why? 42:56.540 --> 43:00.680 For they all out of their surplus put into the offering, but she out of her poverty 43:00.680 --> 43:02.680 put in all that she had to live on. 43:04.640 --> 43:06.240 Now, that's self-denial. 43:06.880 --> 43:08.140 They didn't deny anything. 43:08.540 --> 43:09.980 Do you know how... 43:10.560 --> 43:12.360 I do this all the time to Melody. 43:13.300 --> 43:17.900 You know, we go out to eat and I don't like something, you know, that she likes. 43:18.100 --> 43:19.180 I'm very generous with it. 43:19.640 --> 43:21.320 Here, you can have this, you know. 43:21.320 --> 43:24.140 I don't like pickles and I don't like tomatoes, you know. 43:24.220 --> 43:25.020 So I'm always giving her my... 43:25.020 --> 43:25.560 She's grateful. 43:25.640 --> 43:26.280 She likes tomatoes. 43:26.360 --> 43:27.260 She likes extra tomatoes. 43:27.320 --> 43:27.660 It's great. 43:27.960 --> 43:29.120 But it wasn't a gift. 43:29.480 --> 43:30.840 It's garbage to me. 43:32.560 --> 43:32.940 It is. 43:32.960 --> 43:33.620 It's just garbage. 43:34.080 --> 43:35.120 It's cluttering up my plate. 43:35.160 --> 43:37.420 I don't want those little gooey seeds all over my hamburger. 43:38.920 --> 43:41.680 You know, pickle juice on my mayonnaise. 43:41.860 --> 43:42.140 It's just... 43:43.000 --> 43:44.540 To her, it's a gift. 43:45.100 --> 43:45.880 She goes, thank you. 43:45.960 --> 43:46.360 It's great. 43:46.440 --> 43:47.080 I have more. 43:47.080 --> 43:50.020 And I'm saying, I have more without it, you know. 43:51.960 --> 43:55.420 Really, I have more to eat without that stuff on my plate. 43:57.300 --> 43:59.920 And so many people... 43:59.920 --> 44:05.800 And the other time, this was our first Mexico outreach that we had in L.A. 44:05.880 --> 44:07.380 We didn't really have a... 44:07.870 --> 44:14.020 The first Christmas, we were going to put together clothing to take down to an 44:14.020 --> 44:14.540 orphanage. 44:14.540 --> 44:17.160 And we knew this Mexican brother that knew some people in Mexico, and we were going 44:17.160 --> 44:17.700 to take it down. 44:18.320 --> 44:19.400 And Melody had Josiah. 44:21.340 --> 44:27.160 And when she was pregnant with our first child, Josiah, she was... 44:27.580 --> 44:30.400 We were very well known around the area, and people started giving her maternity 44:30.400 --> 44:30.780 clothes. 44:32.140 --> 44:34.920 And we had about four or five pregnant girls in the ministry. 44:35.560 --> 44:38.260 And so we put in the newsletter, you know, we have pregnant girls, 44:38.360 --> 44:39.540 and if you could send us... 44:40.040 --> 44:43.120 We are clothes for our guys, and you can send us shoes, and you can send us 44:43.120 --> 44:44.380 maternity clothes and baby clothes. 44:44.460 --> 44:45.160 We could appreciate it. 44:45.200 --> 44:46.820 Anything left over, we will send to Mexico. 44:48.080 --> 44:51.460 Well, she went out, and I bought her some maternity clothes, and some people had 44:51.460 --> 44:52.680 given her some really neat maternity clothes. 44:52.760 --> 44:57.200 So she had about five or six really neat, like, you know, maternity blue jeans and a 44:57.200 --> 44:57.880 blue jean skirt. 44:58.160 --> 45:01.020 And really nice, you know, maternity plaid this. 45:01.400 --> 45:03.980 And then she had all these goofy maternity stuff. 45:04.040 --> 45:06.400 I mean, the stuff that she wouldn't be caught dead in Tijuana wearing, 45:06.460 --> 45:06.680 you know. 45:08.480 --> 45:10.560 And she was going to give that all away, you know. 45:10.840 --> 45:14.480 And she had all the good stuff put away for when we had our next child. 45:14.560 --> 45:16.460 And she had all the other stuff ready to go to Mexico. 45:17.240 --> 45:18.460 And then we had the revival. 45:21.540 --> 45:24.780 And lo and behold, the week of the revival, the guy comes to pick up the 45:24.780 --> 45:25.460 stuff from Mexico. 45:26.000 --> 45:27.680 And she is in the back going through it. 45:27.860 --> 45:28.940 Well, Lord... 45:29.460 --> 45:31.400 She goes out, and she goes, guess what I just did? 45:35.560 --> 45:36.480 I go, what? 45:36.480 --> 45:40.200 I gave all the prize stuff that I was saving to the Mexican orphans, 45:40.260 --> 45:40.420 you know. 45:40.460 --> 45:43.620 And I knew it wouldn't matter to them, but it really mattered to God. 45:44.800 --> 45:48.880 I knew that they would be grateful to get the big polka dot bow tie maternity pass. 45:52.000 --> 45:53.700 The stripes with the dots on it. 45:58.040 --> 46:01.240 She goes, I knew, and I knew it really mattered to me that I wanted those. 46:01.320 --> 46:05.540 But I knew it mattered to God that I gave something away that was really giving. 46:09.010 --> 46:10.590 That's denying self. 46:12.150 --> 46:15.270 When the person works so the other one can eat. 46:17.310 --> 46:22.750 It's not, okay, you work, and I'll eat, and then I'll work and you eat. 46:24.370 --> 46:25.870 It isn't... that's a trade. 46:25.990 --> 46:26.590 That's not giving. 46:28.250 --> 46:30.570 I'm not saying you should not eat and only work. 46:30.810 --> 46:32.930 I'm not trying to lay any of those things on you. 46:33.190 --> 46:36.250 I'm just saying that giving is a final... 46:36.710 --> 46:37.490 Giving is painful. 46:37.610 --> 46:38.890 Real giving is painful. 46:39.230 --> 46:40.290 That was painful for Melody. 46:40.550 --> 46:42.850 For weeks and weeks after that, she kept kicking herself. 46:43.610 --> 46:44.350 She didn't grumble. 46:44.430 --> 46:47.710 She just kept going, how am I going to wear those clothes, you know? 46:49.090 --> 46:51.130 And she kept saying, well, you know, I know it's the right thing. 46:51.390 --> 46:54.030 And, you know, she gave it up to the Lord and finally got through. 46:54.230 --> 46:56.630 But it was like, it was painful. 46:56.730 --> 46:57.590 It cost her. 47:00.310 --> 47:03.530 Real giving... that widow could have gone out and I bet you two cents would have 47:03.530 --> 47:04.610 bought a lot in those days. 47:07.150 --> 47:08.810 I bet you she came to follow Jesus. 47:08.950 --> 47:11.470 I mean, it doesn't say she did, but I bet she became one of his disciples. 47:12.290 --> 47:15.410 And was there when he split the five thousand, when he fed the five thousand. 47:15.550 --> 47:20.950 I bet you she... you know, she's probably one of his followers. 47:22.830 --> 47:24.990 Because she had a right heart after God. 47:28.910 --> 47:29.270 Okay... 47:30.210 --> 47:31.230 1 Peter 4 47:42.760 --> 47:49.260 1 Peter 4 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also 47:49.260 --> 47:54.240 with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has sinned from sin. 47:55.020 --> 47:58.640 So as to live the rest of the time in the flesh, no longer for the lusts of men, 47:59.080 --> 48:00.240 but for the will of God. 48:01.960 --> 48:04.640 Self-denial is suffering in the flesh. 48:06.280 --> 48:09.320 Self-denial is putting to deeds the lusts of the flesh. 48:10.080 --> 48:13.840 Self-denial is putting away the appetites of self. 48:15.620 --> 48:17.600 It's saying, God is more important. 48:18.000 --> 48:18.840 You are more important. 48:19.320 --> 48:20.240 Others are more important. 48:20.900 --> 48:22.160 Spiritual things are more important. 48:23.900 --> 48:27.000 And there's nothing wrong with eating, and there's nothing wrong with joking, 48:27.120 --> 48:29.160 and there's nothing wrong with playing games and recreation. 48:31.180 --> 48:35.780 But those are some of the things that are fun, that are also beneficial for us to 48:35.780 --> 48:37.300 give up, in part at least. 48:37.300 --> 48:43.600 And sometimes, like when we fast, in totality, for the sake of arming 48:43.600 --> 48:49.480 ourselves with the purpose of suffering in the flesh, because he who has suffered in 48:49.480 --> 48:50.540 the flesh has ceased from sin. 48:50.780 --> 48:55.400 I'm not talking about, you know, becoming a sage, you know, with a long 48:55.400 --> 48:58.960 robe on and living in a cave, and so that then you become spiritual. 48:59.780 --> 49:05.060 I'm talking about putting aside your own selfish and physical lusts and desires. 49:06.120 --> 49:11.000 And it makes it conducive for prayer, and it makes it conducive for fellowship. 49:11.980 --> 49:16.500 Because you're a lot easier to live with when you're not hard to please. 49:17.640 --> 49:19.000 Can you write that down? 49:19.160 --> 49:19.740 That's important. 49:20.200 --> 49:23.500 You're a lot easier to live with when you're not hard to please. 49:26.660 --> 49:30.240 And somebody who's willing to suffer in the flesh is very easy to please. 49:32.900 --> 49:35.500 And they're very hard to wrong. 49:42.310 --> 49:45.290 You're a lot easier to live with when you're not hard to please. 49:48.510 --> 49:50.670 Okay, Revelation 12, verse 11. 50:01.440 --> 50:03.700 Starting in verse 10, Revelation 12, verse 10. 50:04.440 --> 50:08.020 And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, Now the salvation, and the power, 50:08.140 --> 50:11.500 and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ have come. 50:11.760 --> 50:15.740 For the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our 50:15.740 --> 50:16.520 God day and night. 50:16.520 --> 50:21.260 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of 50:21.260 --> 50:21.840 their testimony. 50:22.420 --> 50:26.140 And they did not love their life even to death. 50:28.240 --> 50:32.020 Now this is an after... this is the end of the world. 50:32.580 --> 50:35.900 Here's the testimony of God concerning the testimony of his saints. 50:37.140 --> 50:39.400 They overcame him by these things. 50:39.700 --> 50:43.820 By the blood of the Lamb, by the word of their testimony, and the fact that they 50:43.820 --> 50:45.420 did not love their life even to death. 50:48.760 --> 50:50.600 That's pretty important for you to understand. 50:50.800 --> 50:53.040 The blood of the Lamb, that's the death of Christ. 50:53.500 --> 50:59.260 The word of their testimony, that means the explanation of praise to God, 50:59.340 --> 51:02.920 and telling of the deeds of God, which helped them overcome and build up 51:02.920 --> 51:03.420 their faith. 51:04.200 --> 51:06.540 And their hatred of their own life. 51:09.660 --> 51:11.460 Their inconsiderateness of themselves. 51:17.070 --> 51:19.630 You know the great saints we read books and biographies about. 51:21.270 --> 51:24.010 Hardly ever considered themselves personally. 51:29.800 --> 51:32.640 Okay, finally we are going to end the study in Jeremiah 35. 51:46.860 --> 51:48.320 I'm going to read the whole chapter. 51:49.860 --> 51:50.900 Incredible story. 51:55.880 --> 51:57.020 Jeremiah 35. 52:00.050 --> 52:02.430 The test of self-denial, you can call this part. 52:07.810 --> 52:13.690 This is an incredible story of God testing the self-denial of a group of people. 52:14.450 --> 52:15.990 God testing, not the devil. 52:18.010 --> 52:23.430 I love the parts of the Bible that don't fit in with our concept of God. 52:23.630 --> 52:25.090 Those are my favorite parts of the Bible. 52:25.390 --> 52:30.030 Because I love having my concept of God expanded, twisted, stretched. 52:31.530 --> 52:33.970 That God is much bigger than I can put him in a box. 52:35.050 --> 52:39.670 I love when parts of the Bible, when God does things, says things, 52:39.770 --> 52:45.770 reacts to things in ways that are inconsistent with our 1981 church western 52:45.770 --> 52:47.430 United States concept of God. 52:48.990 --> 52:53.470 Anything like that in the Bible alerts my attention, flags my view. 52:53.830 --> 52:57.670 Because it shows me that God is bigger than we have allowed him to become. 52:58.770 --> 52:59.430 In reality. 53:01.850 --> 53:03.010 Okay, chapter 35. 53:03.270 --> 53:03.930 Let's just read it through. 53:05.470 --> 53:09.290 The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim, 53:09.370 --> 53:13.350 the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, Go to the house of the Rechabites, 53:15.290 --> 53:18.790 and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the 53:18.790 --> 53:20.510 chambers, and give them wine to drink. 53:21.270 --> 53:21.990 There's the test. 53:22.430 --> 53:23.050 Why is it a test? 53:23.150 --> 53:23.750 You'll find out in a minute. 53:24.810 --> 53:30.490 Then I took Jezeniah, the son of Jeremiah, son of Habeziniah, and his brothers, 53:30.610 --> 53:34.530 and all his sons, and the whole house of Rechabites, and I brought them into the 53:34.530 --> 53:38.550 house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Haman, the son of Igdaliah, 53:38.570 --> 53:42.230 the man of God, which was near the chamber of the officials, which was above the 53:42.230 --> 53:45.250 chamber of Messiah, the son of Shalom, the doorkeeper. 53:46.370 --> 53:48.170 Just in case you don't know where it is. 53:51.350 --> 53:56.570 Then I set before the men of the house of Rechabites pitchers full of wine and cups, 53:56.670 --> 53:59.090 and I said to them, Drink wine. 54:00.950 --> 54:04.950 But they said, We will not drink wine, for Jonadab, the son of Rechab, 54:05.010 --> 54:07.610 our father, commanded us, saying, You shall not drink wine. 54:07.710 --> 54:08.890 You are your sons forever. 54:10.870 --> 54:13.890 And you shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed, and you shall 54:13.890 --> 54:15.270 not plant a vineyard or own one. 54:16.190 --> 54:20.070 But in tents you shall dwell all your days, that you may live many days in the 54:20.070 --> 54:21.110 land where you sojourn. 54:22.590 --> 54:26.470 And we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, our father, 54:26.590 --> 54:29.750 in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, we our wives, 54:29.810 --> 54:34.390 our sons, and our daughters, nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in, and we do 54:34.390 --> 54:36.290 not have vineyard or field or seed. 54:37.170 --> 54:40.610 We have only dwelt in tents and have obeyed and have done according to all that 54:40.610 --> 54:42.010 Jonadab, our father, commanded us. 54:43.150 --> 54:46.610 But it came about, when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came up against the land, 54:46.670 --> 54:49.990 that we said, Come and let us go to Jerusalem, before the army of the 54:49.990 --> 54:53.250 Chaldeans and before the army of the Assyrians, that we have dwelt in 54:53.250 --> 54:53.570 Jerusalem. 54:53.930 --> 54:58.670 In other words, the Babylonians came to occupy Israel, and they rushed ahead of 54:58.670 --> 55:01.770 the occupying army to find shelter with the people of Jerusalem. 55:05.260 --> 55:08.600 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying, Thus says the Lord of 55:08.600 --> 55:12.180 hosts, the God of Israel, Go and say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of 55:12.180 --> 55:15.340 Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction by listening to my words, 55:15.440 --> 55:19.100 declares the Lord, the words of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, which he commanded his 55:19.100 --> 55:20.980 sons not to drink wine or observe? 55:21.920 --> 55:25.200 So they do not drink wine to this day, for they have obeyed their father's 55:25.200 --> 55:25.520 command. 55:25.800 --> 55:28.760 But I have spoken to you again and again, and yet you have not listened to me. 55:29.500 --> 55:33.780 Also I have sent you all my servants, the prophets, sending them again and 55:33.780 --> 55:36.740 again, saying, Turn now every man from his evil way, and amend your deeds. 55:37.160 --> 55:39.040 Do not go after other gods to worship them. 55:39.240 --> 55:42.080 Then you shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your forefathers, 55:42.420 --> 55:45.160 but you have not inclined your ear to listen or listen to me. 55:45.500 --> 55:48.720 Indeed the sons of Jonadab, the sons of Rechab, have observed the command of their 55:48.720 --> 55:52.360 father, which he commanded them, but this people have not listened to me. 55:52.960 --> 55:55.760 Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, 55:56.060 --> 56:00.360 Behold, I am bringing on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster 56:00.360 --> 56:03.580 that I have pronounced against them, because I spoke to them, but they did not 56:03.580 --> 56:03.840 listen. 56:04.100 --> 56:06.100 And I have called them, but they did not answer. 56:07.220 --> 56:11.920 Now as I read this, I was hoping that God would somehow give a nice word to the poor 56:11.920 --> 56:13.960 family that could not live in houses and so on. 56:13.960 --> 56:17.680 Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, Thus says the Lord, 56:17.760 --> 56:21.160 the God of hosts, the God of Israel, Because you have obeyed the command of 56:21.160 --> 56:25.520 Jonadab your father, kept all his commands, and done according to all that 56:25.520 --> 56:26.200 he commanded you. 56:26.560 --> 56:28.520 Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, 56:28.840 --> 56:33.140 Jonadab, the son of Rechab, shall not lack a man to stand before me always. 56:35.840 --> 56:36.720 Test passed. 56:38.420 --> 56:39.420 Who tested them? 56:39.620 --> 56:40.060 God. 56:40.840 --> 56:42.960 Now God wanted to use them as an example. 56:43.080 --> 56:44.340 He said he looked all over the land. 56:44.420 --> 56:46.140 Let me find a righteous family around here. 56:46.520 --> 56:47.280 He sees them. 56:47.780 --> 56:52.660 Well, before I use them as an example, I better give them one last test. 56:53.300 --> 56:58.220 So he has Jeremiah, the heaviest righteous man, most righteous man in Israel, 56:58.420 --> 57:02.560 bring him into the house of God, set wine before him, and command him to 57:02.560 --> 57:03.040 drink it. 57:03.960 --> 57:09.880 In the church, here is a righteous prophet, who is never listed as sinning, 57:11.140 --> 57:15.320 in the house of God, asking him to drink wine, which is commanded in the law of 57:15.320 --> 57:17.660 Moses for people to drink wine, except for the Nazarites. 57:18.320 --> 57:19.860 It wasn't against the laws of the land. 57:19.920 --> 57:21.200 It wasn't against the laws of the temple. 57:21.260 --> 57:22.360 They can drink wine in the temple. 57:23.420 --> 57:26.480 They said, uh-uh, our father said it, and we are not going to do it. 57:28.120 --> 57:30.260 And you can see it wasn't, would you like to drink wine? 57:30.380 --> 57:31.480 It was, drink wine! 57:35.120 --> 57:41.840 There will come a time, like with Balaam, when God will say, go ahead and go. 57:43.880 --> 57:47.200 There will come a time when God has made it clear to you not to do something, 57:48.020 --> 57:50.800 and God will tell somebody to come to you and say, do it! 57:52.000 --> 57:55.900 There will, there will come a time in your life that is consistent with the word of 57:55.900 --> 58:02.030 God, and you will jump at the chance. 58:02.830 --> 58:04.370 Because it's something you always wanted to do. 58:05.450 --> 58:08.990 This family always wanted to drink wine, especially the kids that weren't around 58:08.990 --> 58:10.270 when Grandpa said, don't drink it. 58:12.290 --> 58:16.310 You know, all my friends drink wine, the priests drink wine, even Jeremiah 58:16.310 --> 58:17.370 probably drank wine. 58:17.950 --> 58:19.650 It was part of the culture, it was part of the religion. 58:20.610 --> 58:23.890 How unreasonable for our father to make us outcasts and weirdos. 58:26.370 --> 58:33.110 There will come a time when God says to you, deny yourself. 58:34.470 --> 58:37.630 Don't raise your standard of living, raise your standard of giving when God 58:37.630 --> 58:38.210 blesses you. 58:39.390 --> 58:45.870 And some other man of God will come through and say, feed yourself, 58:46.210 --> 58:46.810 bless yourself. 58:48.070 --> 58:51.230 Some other man of God will come through and God will say, and then God will say, 58:51.330 --> 58:52.970 okay, what did I teach you originally? 58:54.750 --> 58:58.050 What did I teach you about not raising yourself up? 58:58.590 --> 59:01.990 What did I teach you about not dressing yourself up? 59:04.050 --> 59:05.530 Bringing attention to yourself. 59:06.390 --> 59:07.610 Don't ever change that. 59:09.230 --> 59:10.890 God never changes his principles. 59:11.250 --> 59:14.730 Sometimes he changes his ways, and sometimes, as in the case of, 59:14.890 --> 59:18.510 you know, Paul says, I've learned the secret of abounding and abasing. 59:19.590 --> 59:23.210 I've learned the secret of having much and enjoying it, having little and enjoying 59:23.210 --> 59:23.450 it. 59:24.250 --> 59:25.130 Some people like that. 59:25.190 --> 59:27.430 I'm not talking about money, I'm not talking about anything. 59:27.950 --> 59:30.790 I'm not talking about there being any benefit in giving up things. 59:31.830 --> 59:35.530 I'm talking about there being a benefit in worshipping God through putting down 59:35.530 --> 59:37.150 everything else but God. 59:37.900 --> 59:45.570 You must understand there is no benefit in giving up food and giving up sex or giving 59:45.570 --> 59:50.050 up money or giving up anything in its proper place. 59:51.090 --> 59:56.610 There's only benefit in worshipping God above all else and denying him nothing and 59:56.610 --> 59:58.630 denying yourself everything so you can have him. 01:00:05.050 --> 01:00:06.250 Okay, any questions? 01:00:15.340 --> 01:00:15.820 Yes. 01:00:15.940 --> 01:00:19.940 In the scripture John 13, 6-10, we talked about Jesus washing the 01:00:19.940 --> 01:00:20.560 disciples' feet. 01:00:21.260 --> 01:00:26.500 Something's a little confusing to me about the symbolism of washing the feet because 01:00:26.500 --> 01:00:32.100 Jesus says later on after verse 10 that anyone who has had a bath needs only to 01:00:32.100 --> 01:00:32.720 wash his feet. 01:00:33.220 --> 01:00:38.220 So apparently the way I read the symbolism is that Jesus has washed our entire bodies 01:00:38.220 --> 01:00:41.080 and we're clean in him because of his sacrifice. 01:00:41.500 --> 01:00:45.020 Yet our feet have to be... we're touching the ground with our feet. 01:00:45.120 --> 01:00:48.680 We take a bath and we walk around and our feet get dirty but yet you're still clean. 01:00:49.080 --> 01:00:49.820 And he had to keep washing our feet. 01:00:49.820 --> 01:00:51.660 There's a lot of different interpretation of that. 01:00:51.760 --> 01:00:52.020 Can you? 01:00:52.500 --> 01:00:54.180 No, I wouldn't expound on it. 01:00:54.220 --> 01:00:57.800 All I would say, it also has been explained as just being his reaction to 01:00:57.800 --> 01:00:59.280 Peter saying, wash my hands and my head. 01:00:59.360 --> 01:01:01.860 He says, no, your hands and head are clean. 01:01:01.960 --> 01:01:02.960 You took a bath earlier. 01:01:03.400 --> 01:01:05.420 Your feet, you're walking in the dust. 01:01:05.500 --> 01:01:06.700 That's what needs to be washed. 01:01:06.800 --> 01:01:07.580 I don't need to wash them. 01:01:07.580 --> 01:01:10.420 I mean, it could just be a practical, physical thing that he was telling Peter. 01:01:12.020 --> 01:01:13.780 I'm not saying it couldn't be spiritual. 01:01:14.500 --> 01:01:16.780 I wouldn't want to get into it, especially now. 01:01:18.840 --> 01:01:20.040 Yes, Laura. 01:01:20.040 --> 01:01:25.820 When you were saying about there coming a time when God told you something and then 01:01:25.820 --> 01:01:31.400 he'll send someone or allow someone to come and ask God for something, 01:01:31.840 --> 01:01:35.760 it looked like it's really okay to not do what he said. 01:01:35.900 --> 01:01:42.520 I thought about that prophet that prophesied about Josiah and prophesied 01:01:42.520 --> 01:01:43.120 against the altar. 01:01:43.540 --> 01:01:43.820 Right. 01:01:44.820 --> 01:01:46.000 That's a heavy story. 01:01:46.900 --> 01:01:51.060 God told him not to go and the other guy said, well, God said you could go, 01:01:51.480 --> 01:01:52.980 you know, you could come into my house and eat. 01:01:53.140 --> 01:01:53.680 God had told him. 01:01:56.560 --> 01:01:57.520 All right. 01:01:58.440 --> 01:02:00.680 Can you turn to John chapter 11? 01:02:01.680 --> 01:02:02.580 Gospel of John. 01:02:07.300 --> 01:02:14.580 This is a study that I prepared for our own ministry last night and I got sick 01:02:14.580 --> 01:02:17.280 yesterday and didn't feel up to presenting this. 01:02:18.220 --> 01:02:25.880 As God works together for good in everything, I know that possibly there are 01:02:25.880 --> 01:02:31.000 some here that needed to hear the principles that Jesus lives out and 01:02:31.000 --> 01:02:32.820 presents in his life through this chapter. 01:02:34.640 --> 01:02:39.680 And this morning I felt the Spirit united me to call Dale and see. 01:02:40.000 --> 01:02:45.000 I knew that Leonard was out of town and that possibly I was to teach this here 01:02:45.000 --> 01:02:45.320 tonight. 01:02:45.320 --> 01:02:48.300 He said, no, there wasn't any plans for anybody to be here to take Leonard's 01:02:48.300 --> 01:02:48.580 place. 01:02:49.580 --> 01:02:52.580 And I always feel kind of strange sitting in Leonard Reagan's chair. 01:02:54.560 --> 01:03:00.200 I don't feel that I have his years or anything that he has, except the same God 01:03:00.200 --> 01:03:02.800 and the same Bible, which is a lot. 01:03:05.020 --> 01:03:10.280 And so tonight we're going to look at, I think, one of the most exciting, 01:03:10.560 --> 01:03:14.300 dramatic, It's more dramatic than anything that ever happened on a soap opera or on a 01:03:14.300 --> 01:03:15.040 Hollywood screen. 01:03:15.860 --> 01:03:18.160 It's the death and resurrection of Lazarus. 01:03:19.960 --> 01:03:24.680 And this chapter is peppered with... 01:03:24.680 --> 01:03:28.280 There's several verses in here that you could teach on for a week if you have one 01:03:28.280 --> 01:03:29.020 of those teaching mentalities. 01:03:29.940 --> 01:03:33.600 I never could get into people that took a verse and went a week on it. 01:03:33.860 --> 01:03:35.160 I've never been able to do that. 01:03:37.220 --> 01:03:39.200 The Bible is sort of like a love letter. 01:03:40.020 --> 01:03:41.340 And there's stories. 01:03:42.460 --> 01:03:47.720 There is a couple of books in the Bible that you can spend weeks on verses. 01:03:48.460 --> 01:03:51.240 The only two I can think of, really, is Romans and Hebrews. 01:03:51.760 --> 01:03:55.200 They always kind of stump the stars in the theologian field. 01:03:56.940 --> 01:04:00.360 But the Gospels, I think they're meant to be read. 01:04:01.820 --> 01:04:06.780 Read them, go through them, pick out the good parts and expound on them. 01:04:06.780 --> 01:04:11.020 I don't know how you would feel if you'd written a couple of letters to somebody 01:04:11.020 --> 01:04:13.080 and they took a week to go on each sentence. 01:04:14.500 --> 01:04:15.320 Dear Fred. 01:04:17.040 --> 01:04:18.740 Look at the way he said dear. 01:04:19.080 --> 01:04:21.760 Look at that semicolon there at the end of Fred. 01:04:24.480 --> 01:04:25.840 He spelled the date out. 01:04:27.500 --> 01:04:31.960 I have trouble with spending a lot of time on one little part of the Scripture 01:04:31.960 --> 01:04:34.580 because you tend to forget the whole story. 01:04:34.580 --> 01:04:36.320 So we're going to go through this. 01:04:39.060 --> 01:04:42.900 There is a couple of places where we need to stop and say a few things. 01:04:44.220 --> 01:04:49.040 And to point out some things that aren't necessarily obvious on the surface. 01:04:50.460 --> 01:04:57.860 But I think you'll agree, taking a look at it, that Jesus' emotions are not what the 01:04:57.860 --> 01:04:59.940 people in this chapter thought they were. 01:04:59.940 --> 01:05:03.700 Okay, let's go from the beginning. 01:05:04.080 --> 01:05:04.820 Chapter 11. 01:05:04.980 --> 01:05:06.240 I'm reading from the New American Standard. 01:05:11.420 --> 01:05:13.040 Now a certain man was sick. 01:05:13.520 --> 01:05:16.820 Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 01:05:16.980 --> 01:05:18.320 You can remember Mary and Martha. 01:05:19.040 --> 01:05:21.200 Remember, Martha was the busy one. 01:05:22.160 --> 01:05:24.660 She wanted to make Thanksgiving dinner for Jesus. 01:05:24.860 --> 01:05:27.040 You know, the turkey and the stuffing and she was running around. 01:05:27.040 --> 01:05:30.620 She had her hands in the microwave and everything. 01:05:31.140 --> 01:05:33.140 And Mary was kind of sitting in a gaze-indy. 01:05:33.880 --> 01:05:36.460 But that's another whole story, another whole principle. 01:05:36.640 --> 01:05:40.520 But that's the same Mary and Martha of the, hey Mary, how come you're not 01:05:40.520 --> 01:05:41.180 working, thing. 01:05:42.000 --> 01:05:44.100 Okay, verse 2. 01:05:44.160 --> 01:05:47.820 And it was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her 01:05:47.820 --> 01:05:49.760 hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 01:05:51.420 --> 01:05:56.660 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is 01:05:56.660 --> 01:05:57.020 sick. 01:05:59.700 --> 01:06:01.300 Now, let's stop there. 01:06:03.640 --> 01:06:08.480 I think that Jesus had a special relationship with his family. 01:06:09.080 --> 01:06:11.780 Now it's true that Jesus had a love for all mankind. 01:06:12.100 --> 01:06:14.560 But let's face it, as Leonard says, he had some favorites. 01:06:15.100 --> 01:06:19.820 Nobody likes to think of things like that, but he had favorites. 01:06:20.460 --> 01:06:24.340 Not according to, like it says that God is not a respecter of persons. 01:06:24.500 --> 01:06:27.240 That means that he's not impressed when you have big gold rings. 01:06:27.600 --> 01:06:30.900 He's not impressed that you have a big house, or that you've got a pretty face, 01:06:30.940 --> 01:06:32.120 or a wonderful personality. 01:06:32.480 --> 01:06:36.000 He's only impressed with one thing, the state and attitude of your heart. 01:06:37.160 --> 01:06:41.360 Remember, here is a family, a man, an Israelite in whom there is no guile. 01:06:41.440 --> 01:06:42.460 That impressed Jesus. 01:06:44.720 --> 01:06:48.780 It impressed David, a man after God's heart, a man after my heart. 01:06:48.780 --> 01:06:52.360 Have you considered my servant Job, a man righteous, upright and blameless. 01:06:52.560 --> 01:06:55.440 Those are the things that always impressed God in the Bible. 01:06:56.360 --> 01:06:59.840 There must have been something about this family that impressed Jesus. 01:07:00.660 --> 01:07:04.440 But we already have an example that he was impressed with Mary, his devotion. 01:07:05.680 --> 01:07:08.400 Lazarus also, now there are a lot of things in the Bible, in fact it says at 01:07:08.400 --> 01:07:11.280 the end of this book of John, that if everything Jesus did were written, 01:07:12.100 --> 01:07:13.720 the world couldn't even contain books. 01:07:13.800 --> 01:07:15.700 Now I used to look at that and go, that's not a literal statement, 01:07:15.800 --> 01:07:16.600 but it really is. 01:07:17.060 --> 01:07:17.840 You know why? 01:07:18.720 --> 01:07:19.800 What has Jesus done? 01:07:20.560 --> 01:07:22.420 Well, brought the earth. 01:07:23.040 --> 01:07:25.920 What if they wrote down every single thing he did while he was on the earth? 01:07:25.980 --> 01:07:27.220 That wouldn't fill the earth, would it? 01:07:27.300 --> 01:07:28.260 No, probably not. 01:07:28.620 --> 01:07:32.180 I mean, if they wrote down everything that John Paul Gideon did, you know, 01:07:32.380 --> 01:07:32.980 he took a breath. 01:07:33.740 --> 01:07:35.000 He digested his spirits. 01:07:36.000 --> 01:07:37.180 He blinked his eyes. 01:07:37.300 --> 01:07:38.580 I mean, that wouldn't even fill the earth. 01:07:40.140 --> 01:07:41.300 What else did Jesus do? 01:07:42.640 --> 01:07:43.580 He created the earth. 01:07:45.060 --> 01:07:48.180 Imagine all the books it would take to talk about how he created the eye of a 01:07:48.180 --> 01:07:48.480 fly. 01:07:50.240 --> 01:07:51.320 What else does he do? 01:07:51.540 --> 01:07:53.020 He runs the universe. 01:07:53.860 --> 01:07:55.260 Are you getting the picture? 01:07:55.880 --> 01:07:56.980 How long has he done it? 01:07:57.260 --> 01:07:58.560 Forever in both directions. 01:07:59.420 --> 01:08:03.680 Now you can find out why the earth could not contain all the books of everything 01:08:03.680 --> 01:08:04.400 Jesus has done. 01:08:04.440 --> 01:08:05.320 That's a literal statement. 01:08:06.160 --> 01:08:11.560 But back to Lazarus, Lazarus must have done some incredible, had an incredible 01:08:11.560 --> 01:08:11.820 heart. 01:08:11.820 --> 01:08:18.020 He must have really impressed Jesus with his spiritual depth and character. 01:08:18.940 --> 01:08:22.500 For him to be called by his own sisters, the one whom you love. 01:08:24.940 --> 01:08:29.080 And another place in this chapter, it says, look, see how much he loved them, 01:08:29.120 --> 01:08:29.600 he's weeping. 01:08:29.740 --> 01:08:33.120 The people, he has, Lazarus was one of his best friends. 01:08:33.800 --> 01:08:37.620 He wasn't like one of the twelve, but he was one of his favorite 01:08:37.620 --> 01:08:38.840 missionaries, if you will. 01:08:39.880 --> 01:08:45.240 One of his favorite people that were supporting the ministry on the outside. 01:08:45.360 --> 01:08:47.640 Somebody he liked to hang out with when he was in town. 01:08:49.420 --> 01:08:52.100 Now there's another thing in this verse. 01:08:52.560 --> 01:08:54.120 Lord behold, he whom you love is sick. 01:08:54.800 --> 01:09:00.780 It's almost like they're saying to him, they don't say, Lord Lazarus is sick. 01:09:01.560 --> 01:09:05.560 They say, Lord, this guy is sick, and remember how much you love him? 01:09:06.240 --> 01:09:11.140 Like they're trying to say, they're trying to talk Jesus into coming. 01:09:11.860 --> 01:09:20.240 They're trying to add a little bit of human ingenuity and human pull to get him 01:09:20.240 --> 01:09:20.620 to come. 01:09:21.800 --> 01:09:26.800 But when Jesus heard it in verse 4, he said, this sickness is not unto death, 01:09:26.940 --> 01:09:30.320 but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it. 01:09:32.700 --> 01:09:34.040 How does Jesus know that? 01:09:36.500 --> 01:09:43.540 Jesus knows that Lazarus, through the spiritual realm, he knows that Lazarus is 01:09:43.540 --> 01:09:45.960 not going to stay dead by this sickness. 01:09:46.820 --> 01:09:47.980 This is not unto death. 01:09:50.740 --> 01:09:54.400 Now, you have to understand what his disciples... you guys can come on in. 01:09:55.240 --> 01:09:59.240 There's plenty, there's room here on the couch, and there's more chairs around. 01:10:02.200 --> 01:10:05.040 Do you have to understand what this sounds like to his disciples? 01:10:05.560 --> 01:10:10.600 Now remember, Jesus had the kind of disciples that would open their mouths to 01:10:10.600 --> 01:10:11.320 change feet. 01:10:12.600 --> 01:10:13.440 Especially Peter. 01:10:14.860 --> 01:10:19.640 He had disciples with 6 inch skulls. 01:10:21.540 --> 01:10:25.420 Imagine the night before you die, you know you're going to be crying on a 01:10:25.420 --> 01:10:27.220 cross, you know you're going to be beaten to a pulp. 01:10:27.220 --> 01:10:31.160 Here's your 12 disciples, 3 years of intense discipleship training. 01:10:31.600 --> 01:10:33.000 3 years of Bible study. 01:10:33.240 --> 01:10:35.720 3 years of Old Testament in-depth teaching. 01:10:35.960 --> 01:10:37.000 3 years of miracles. 01:10:37.400 --> 01:10:41.320 I'm the greatest, oh yeah, well let me get into the kingdom, I'll sit at the right 01:10:41.320 --> 01:10:42.680 hand, oh no, I'll sit at the left hand. 01:10:43.960 --> 01:10:46.180 I would have gone out and gotten 12 new disciples. 01:10:47.820 --> 01:10:48.520 Not Jesus. 01:10:49.020 --> 01:10:50.300 He got down and washed their feet. 01:10:51.600 --> 01:10:52.860 Shows you the heart of God. 01:10:54.080 --> 01:10:56.260 So he's got these numbskulls for disciples. 01:10:56.340 --> 01:11:01.160 Now you have to understand how this sentence sounds to the disciples. 01:11:02.140 --> 01:11:03.040 How does it sound? 01:11:03.460 --> 01:11:04.760 This sickness is not on the death. 01:11:05.060 --> 01:11:08.700 That means, very literally, vipers ain't going to die. 01:11:09.480 --> 01:11:10.900 How do you think it looked to the disciples? 01:11:13.240 --> 01:11:14.900 When he went there and they found him dead. 01:11:14.960 --> 01:11:17.480 It looked like Jesus gave up all prophecy, didn't it? 01:11:17.540 --> 01:11:18.260 On the surface. 01:11:19.620 --> 01:11:24.640 You have to understand that when Peter said, is that you Lord out there? 01:11:25.760 --> 01:11:26.980 Jesus said, uh-huh. 01:11:27.220 --> 01:11:28.940 If it's really you, bid that I come. 01:11:31.280 --> 01:11:35.160 And the disciples said, I've got to see this. 01:11:36.080 --> 01:11:38.380 Jesus said, alright, I've got to see this too, come on. 01:11:42.620 --> 01:11:45.620 Peter starts walking on the water, all the disciples go, I wish I would have 01:11:45.620 --> 01:11:46.060 done that. 01:11:47.060 --> 01:11:49.780 He starts to sink and I go, boy, I'm glad I didn't do that. 01:11:54.000 --> 01:11:57.780 Peter was eager to jump to conclusions. 01:11:58.480 --> 01:11:59.640 All the disciples were too. 01:12:00.920 --> 01:12:03.120 He says, beware of the eleven of the Pharisees. 01:12:03.380 --> 01:12:04.760 Maybe it's because we didn't take bread. 01:12:05.340 --> 01:12:07.220 I'm not talking about bread. 01:12:07.300 --> 01:12:08.480 I'm talking about their teaching. 01:12:09.460 --> 01:12:11.200 They're always taking everything literally. 01:12:11.320 --> 01:12:12.840 So how does this sound to the disciples? 01:12:12.840 --> 01:12:16.140 This sickness is not unto death, but to the glory of God, that the Son of 01:12:16.140 --> 01:12:17.540 God may be glorified by it. 01:12:18.540 --> 01:12:20.220 Well, maybe he's going to heal them from afar. 01:12:20.300 --> 01:12:21.140 He did that before. 01:12:22.040 --> 01:12:27.300 Maybe Jesus will just go around the bush and wave his hands and the Lazarus will 01:12:27.300 --> 01:12:27.780 get healed. 01:12:27.900 --> 01:12:28.900 And it's for the glory of God. 01:12:30.300 --> 01:12:33.200 Also, you have to understand, you'll find later in the chapter, they had just come 01:12:33.200 --> 01:12:37.160 out of Jerusalem, where Jesus had almost been killed and been taken, according to 01:12:37.160 --> 01:12:38.240 the disciples' view of it. 01:12:39.100 --> 01:12:41.900 So they don't want to go down to Bethany, which is a rite of stone served in 01:12:41.900 --> 01:12:42.200 Jerusalem. 01:12:42.840 --> 01:12:43.440 Verse 5. 01:12:43.880 --> 01:12:49.440 Now here's one of those verses that gets the Christian socialists very mad. 01:12:50.620 --> 01:12:51.600 I'll explain that in a minute. 01:12:51.840 --> 01:12:54.280 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 01:12:55.200 --> 01:12:57.360 And therefore he heard that he was sick. 01:12:57.800 --> 01:13:00.820 He stayed then two days longer in the place where he was. 01:13:01.780 --> 01:13:02.680 Verse 5. 01:13:03.740 --> 01:13:09.740 The people that say that Jesus loves everybody equally, they say, well of 01:13:09.740 --> 01:13:13.060 course he loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus and Fred and Mary and Ethel and so 01:13:13.060 --> 01:13:13.240 on. 01:13:14.560 --> 01:13:17.460 But that is one of those verses of special. 01:13:17.740 --> 01:13:19.700 Jesus had a special love for them. 01:13:21.400 --> 01:13:22.520 You better believe it. 01:13:23.940 --> 01:13:25.120 Jesus had a special love. 01:13:25.220 --> 01:13:27.500 It doesn't mean that he didn't have... 01:13:27.500 --> 01:13:31.180 That means that because he loves more, it doesn't mean he loves others less. 01:13:32.580 --> 01:13:34.180 You have to understand God's love. 01:13:34.980 --> 01:13:36.720 God can love you with his whole heart. 01:13:37.620 --> 01:13:40.440 And then the guy next to you, he can have a special love for him. 01:13:40.480 --> 01:13:43.580 And it doesn't mean he loves you any less than he can love you. 01:13:44.340 --> 01:13:45.280 You won't notice it. 01:13:45.780 --> 01:13:46.420 Remember Joseph? 01:13:47.440 --> 01:13:49.280 His father gave him a coat of many colors. 01:13:50.340 --> 01:13:51.720 Remember how jealous it made his brothers? 01:13:52.260 --> 01:13:55.300 His father gave them good things too. 01:13:55.560 --> 01:13:58.300 Their father was a rich man and shared among his brothers. 01:13:58.540 --> 01:14:01.080 But he desired to give a special blessing to Joseph. 01:14:03.100 --> 01:14:05.840 Remember the parable of the guy who worked in the vineyard? 01:14:06.220 --> 01:14:11.280 He said, can I do what I want with what is my own without you getting jealous and 01:14:11.280 --> 01:14:11.780 covetous? 01:14:14.360 --> 01:14:17.380 I want you to realize that because it is going to be an important story. 01:14:17.520 --> 01:14:19.800 Jesus loved Martha and his sister and wife. 01:14:19.920 --> 01:14:20.880 He had a special love for them. 01:14:21.760 --> 01:14:24.060 How many of the disciples were in the inner circle? 01:14:26.000 --> 01:14:26.440 Three. 01:14:26.660 --> 01:14:29.360 He had three disciples that only got to do certain things. 01:14:29.460 --> 01:14:30.680 Nobody else got to do. 01:14:31.080 --> 01:14:32.240 They were there on the Mount of Transfiguration. 01:14:33.640 --> 01:14:36.420 Jesus took those three to... 01:14:39.040 --> 01:14:41.720 There is a special place in Stone's Throw where he took those three to pray and 01:14:41.720 --> 01:14:42.040 disseminate. 01:14:42.080 --> 01:14:43.540 There is another place where he just took them to. 01:14:43.960 --> 01:14:45.220 I can't think of the guy's name. 01:14:45.340 --> 01:14:48.080 Rahiel, the daughter of Jairus. 01:14:49.800 --> 01:14:50.980 He just took those three too. 01:14:53.800 --> 01:14:55.800 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 01:14:55.900 --> 01:14:56.100 Six. 01:14:56.220 --> 01:15:00.640 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he got on the next plane and went to 01:15:00.640 --> 01:15:00.940 Bethany. 01:15:01.820 --> 01:15:02.320 No. 01:15:02.660 --> 01:15:03.320 He stayed. 01:15:04.800 --> 01:15:05.980 Premeditatedly didn't go. 01:15:06.300 --> 01:15:07.120 That's what that says. 01:15:08.360 --> 01:15:10.420 He premeditatedly said, Hey, he's sick. 01:15:10.500 --> 01:15:11.280 Let's stay here. 01:15:13.800 --> 01:15:17.240 Now, that doesn't sound like a very loving thing to do if you have the power to heal 01:15:17.240 --> 01:15:17.780 somebody. 01:15:19.960 --> 01:15:21.210 God works in... 01:15:26.460 --> 01:15:28.160 in a mysterious way. 01:15:29.380 --> 01:15:34.160 God will withhold from us a blessing so that we can get a greater blessing later. 01:15:35.200 --> 01:15:40.320 God will withhold a small miracle so that he can do a greater miracle and get more 01:15:40.320 --> 01:15:40.680 glory. 01:15:42.000 --> 01:15:45.960 God always does the thing that gives him the most glory because it's the best thing 01:15:45.960 --> 01:15:48.760 for his universe and his kingdom for him to get the most glory. 01:15:49.040 --> 01:15:51.340 It's the healthiest thing for you, for God, to get the most glory. 01:15:51.860 --> 01:15:56.440 Therefore, God will withhold from you pennies so that you can get quarters, 01:15:57.220 --> 01:15:58.360 spiritually speaking. 01:15:58.820 --> 01:16:02.200 God will withhold from you those little things sometimes. 01:16:02.880 --> 01:16:08.200 He will premeditatedly not give you what you ask for immediately so that he can 01:16:08.200 --> 01:16:11.220 give you more than you bargained for later. 01:16:13.280 --> 01:16:18.620 Things that we have not heard or seen or even imagined in our hearts as God 01:16:18.620 --> 01:16:19.660 prepared for them in life. 01:16:20.860 --> 01:16:24.500 His sisters weren't thinking that Lazarus was going to die. 01:16:24.500 --> 01:16:25.800 They weren't even considering it. 01:16:25.820 --> 01:16:27.180 Now, we all know the end of the story, right? 01:16:28.140 --> 01:16:29.320 Lazarus is going to get raised from the dead. 01:16:29.440 --> 01:16:32.540 Every Christian in here knows that so I'm not going to act like you don't know the 01:16:32.540 --> 01:16:32.760 end. 01:16:32.840 --> 01:16:34.920 We're going to go through it as if we know the end already. 01:16:35.420 --> 01:16:36.340 From God's point of view. 01:16:36.420 --> 01:16:38.220 God knew he was going to raise Lazarus from the dead. 01:16:39.080 --> 01:16:40.740 He says it right there in verse 4. 01:16:42.480 --> 01:16:48.760 Jesus is planning God is planning to do something big. 01:16:49.760 --> 01:16:55.580 They just want him to get healed of the flu or the cold or the acne or whatever he 01:16:55.580 --> 01:16:55.920 had. 01:16:57.980 --> 01:17:02.920 They wanted an easy, quick, God gets a little glory, way out. 01:17:03.600 --> 01:17:06.660 God had other plans which caused them to doubt. 01:17:07.260 --> 01:17:11.440 Which caused them to fret and you'll find out later caused them to be a little 01:17:11.440 --> 01:17:13.440 bitter questioning of God's wisdom. 01:17:14.440 --> 01:17:16.500 At the end, nobody questioned God's wisdom. 01:17:16.960 --> 01:17:21.240 At the end, no one had a thing bad to say about Jesus and how much he loved or 01:17:21.240 --> 01:17:22.760 didn't love Lazarus. 01:17:28.250 --> 01:17:32.370 Then after this, he said to his disciples, let us go to Judea again. 01:17:33.730 --> 01:17:38.490 The disciples said to him, Rabbi, here, his board of directors came by. 01:17:39.910 --> 01:17:42.550 We really don't think this is a wise idea. 01:17:43.450 --> 01:17:46.910 Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you. 01:17:48.030 --> 01:17:49.670 And are you going there again? 01:17:50.250 --> 01:17:51.550 Have you flipped your noodle? 01:17:52.370 --> 01:17:53.330 I mean, can you imagine? 01:17:54.090 --> 01:17:58.810 You're the teacher, they're the students, they're the followers, and they're 01:17:58.810 --> 01:18:00.850 questioning your every move. 01:18:01.370 --> 01:18:03.670 Are you sure this is the right thing to do, Jesus? 01:18:04.350 --> 01:18:06.890 Last week, he told this wind to shut up and it did. 01:18:06.970 --> 01:18:08.170 And they're questioning him. 01:18:10.390 --> 01:18:14.030 A week before that, it made food stamps look crazy. 01:18:14.210 --> 01:18:17.530 He's just passing food out and five loaves of bread. 01:18:17.730 --> 01:18:19.010 They're questioning Jesus. 01:18:20.190 --> 01:18:23.030 They're giving him a political and social statement. 01:18:23.310 --> 01:18:25.850 They're giving him the ABC World News Tonight report. 01:18:25.850 --> 01:18:27.490 This is not good, Lord. 01:18:27.590 --> 01:18:28.790 It's not safe for you to go. 01:18:30.230 --> 01:18:33.070 He just saved them from drowning with the word out of his mouth and they're 01:18:33.070 --> 01:18:33.710 questioning him. 01:18:33.910 --> 01:18:35.050 Can you believe that? 01:18:36.270 --> 01:18:42.930 What God allows people, what God puts up with, what God allows people to go into in 01:18:42.930 --> 01:18:46.790 his presence and still very quietly says, nine. 01:18:47.430 --> 01:18:50.230 Jesus answered, are there not twelve hours in the day? 01:18:50.830 --> 01:18:51.850 Speaking of parables here, 01:18:55.850 --> 01:18:56.970 the light of this world. 01:18:58.370 --> 01:19:02.590 But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in 01:19:02.590 --> 01:19:02.850 him. 01:19:04.550 --> 01:19:05.670 What does all that mean? 01:19:05.750 --> 01:19:07.090 It has a whole bunch of different meanings. 01:19:09.870 --> 01:19:15.670 One of the meanings is, of course, the mystical or spiritual meaning is there 01:19:15.670 --> 01:19:18.630 is a time when I can walk and not be taken. 01:19:19.310 --> 01:19:21.030 Remember, he says, my hour has not yet come. 01:19:22.430 --> 01:19:25.130 He talked about a time when he will be allowed to be taken. 01:19:25.310 --> 01:19:27.990 He says, no one takes my life from me but I give it willingly. 01:19:28.270 --> 01:19:29.170 They can't take me. 01:19:29.270 --> 01:19:30.430 I don't have to worry about it. 01:19:31.110 --> 01:19:32.230 I'm going to walk in the day. 01:19:32.290 --> 01:19:34.750 This is the daytime of my ministry. 01:19:34.990 --> 01:19:38.710 There will come a night, the night of Gethsemane, when they'll come and take us 01:19:38.710 --> 01:19:39.650 like thieves and robbers. 01:19:40.030 --> 01:19:40.770 That's the other meaning. 01:19:40.910 --> 01:19:42.850 You don't have to worry, we're going to travel by day. 01:19:43.890 --> 01:19:45.670 When I get taken, it will be at night. 01:19:53.850 --> 01:19:54.630 Verse 11. 01:19:54.850 --> 01:20:03.670 Then he said, and after that, this he said, our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep 01:20:04.650 --> 01:20:08.010 but I go that I might awaken him out of sleep. 01:20:09.510 --> 01:20:10.530 Isn't that a nice way of putting it? 01:20:11.050 --> 01:20:13.030 Do you know why Jesus said that? 01:20:14.950 --> 01:20:18.510 Why did he say, Lazarus kicked the bucket, let's go raise him from the dead. 01:20:21.780 --> 01:20:23.020 He cast in his chips. 01:20:28.940 --> 01:20:35.000 The reason he said Lazarus has fallen asleep is because there is something of a 01:20:35.000 --> 01:20:36.300 finality in the word death. 01:20:37.140 --> 01:20:38.020 He died. 01:20:38.820 --> 01:20:41.960 You don't have any hope that someone is going to come back in your lifetime when 01:20:41.960 --> 01:20:42.800 they use the word die. 01:20:43.440 --> 01:20:47.560 Jesus was trying to explain spiritually to them, this is a temporary situation, 01:20:47.820 --> 01:20:48.040 kids. 01:20:49.120 --> 01:20:50.260 He's fallen asleep, I'm going to wake him. 01:20:50.620 --> 01:20:54.820 He said, it's going to be as easy as going and shaking your brother. 01:20:54.820 --> 01:20:56.740 He had to wake him up for school. 01:20:57.660 --> 01:20:58.780 That's the way Jesus looked at it. 01:20:59.000 --> 01:21:01.400 He was giving them a glimpse at the way he sees things. 01:21:02.460 --> 01:21:04.720 He was giving them a glimpse at what true faith is. 01:21:06.120 --> 01:21:09.740 He was giving them a glimpse of the vision of what resurrection really is to God. 01:21:09.820 --> 01:21:11.460 It's no great feat, it isn't even a miracle. 01:21:12.920 --> 01:21:14.140 It's natural to God. 01:21:17.640 --> 01:21:22.060 The disciples therefore said to him, now here's their medical advice to the 01:21:22.060 --> 01:21:22.560 Lord Jesus. 01:21:24.820 --> 01:21:27.400 First they gave him a political report, now they're giving him the American 01:21:27.400 --> 01:21:30.580 Medical Association opinion about Lazarus here. 01:21:31.480 --> 01:21:33.620 Lord, if he's fallen asleep, he'll recover. 01:21:34.220 --> 01:21:35.620 He's just a little tired. 01:21:37.800 --> 01:21:40.900 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he was speaking of 01:21:40.900 --> 01:21:41.400 literal sleep. 01:21:41.500 --> 01:21:42.080 Thank you John. 01:21:43.420 --> 01:21:49.180 Then Jesus therefore said to them plainly, Jesus therefore said to them plainly, 01:21:50.320 --> 01:21:52.300 Lazarus is dead. 01:21:55.020 --> 01:21:56.000 Thank you Lord. 01:21:56.720 --> 01:21:59.940 Sometimes God will just say, shut up. 01:22:01.760 --> 01:22:04.600 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there. 01:22:05.900 --> 01:22:08.040 I can see the Lord smiling through that. 01:22:09.060 --> 01:22:10.820 And I wasn't there. 01:22:12.560 --> 01:22:14.040 So that you may believe. 01:22:14.460 --> 01:22:15.220 Come on, let's go. 01:22:16.680 --> 01:22:17.740 But let us go to him. 01:22:19.020 --> 01:22:27.060 Thomas therefore, a man of faith, who is called Davidimus, which means the 01:22:27.060 --> 01:22:33.760 twin, said to his fellow disciples, let us go also, that we may die with him. 01:22:35.280 --> 01:22:38.040 Come on, he's going to get killed, let's go die too. 01:22:39.360 --> 01:22:41.140 There's a faithful man to have around. 01:22:42.400 --> 01:22:44.100 For your treasurer, you've got a thief. 01:22:44.560 --> 01:22:46.380 For your encourager, you've got a cynic. 01:22:47.220 --> 01:22:47.960 For your leader, 01:22:52.000 --> 01:22:52.440 you've got a thief. 01:22:52.440 --> 01:22:53.000 Verse 17. 01:22:54.180 --> 01:22:58.300 So when Jesus came, he found that he had already been in the tomb four days. 01:22:59.900 --> 01:23:04.040 Which probably means now, I don't know really where he was there, but they say 01:23:04.040 --> 01:23:06.540 it's a two day journey from there to Bethany. 01:23:06.940 --> 01:23:10.160 He waited two days, which means he probably died the same day they sent the 01:23:10.160 --> 01:23:10.400 message. 01:23:10.520 --> 01:23:14.600 Which means he probably couldn't even have gotten there before he died anyway. 01:23:17.060 --> 01:23:24.420 So Jesus probably knew that his sickness was not of the death, but he possibly had 01:23:24.420 --> 01:23:25.420 already died. 01:23:25.600 --> 01:23:29.400 Because you remember, if it took him two days to get there, how long would it take 01:23:29.400 --> 01:23:30.540 the message to get to him? 01:23:31.900 --> 01:23:33.080 They didn't have air mail. 01:23:34.140 --> 01:23:37.660 It took somebody just as long to get to you as it took you to get to them. 01:23:39.700 --> 01:23:45.540 So most likely, the message had been given to him two days before Lazarus died. 01:23:46.120 --> 01:23:48.640 When he got it, it was the day Lazarus died. 01:23:49.020 --> 01:23:50.360 So he couldn't have gotten there anyway. 01:23:51.620 --> 01:23:53.920 It took him two days, and then it took a two day journey to get there. 01:23:54.180 --> 01:23:55.580 He's been in the grave four days. 01:23:59.040 --> 01:24:02.340 Now the thing, it's probably obvious to everybody that he couldn't have gotten 01:24:02.340 --> 01:24:03.220 there before he died. 01:24:03.880 --> 01:24:06.780 But everybody here is going to be all bummed out that he didn't at least make an 01:24:06.780 --> 01:24:07.540 effort to get there. 01:24:07.620 --> 01:24:10.400 Because he didn't know that he died, but Jesus did know, and they don't trust 01:24:10.400 --> 01:24:10.620 him. 01:24:11.840 --> 01:24:15.360 They worship him, they hosanna him, they say oh lord, they call him master, 01:24:21.620 --> 01:24:24.820 but it's obvious by everybody's attitude, including his own disciples, that they 01:24:24.820 --> 01:24:25.460 didn't trust him. 01:24:26.080 --> 01:24:30.320 You can sing praise songs, you can raise people from the dead, you can do all kinds 01:24:30.320 --> 01:24:33.380 of miracles, you can go to church until your face is blue, until the church is 01:24:33.380 --> 01:24:38.040 gorgeous, you can give all your money, but if you don't trust God, your religion 01:24:38.040 --> 01:24:39.800 is like all these people. 01:24:40.400 --> 01:24:40.760 Funny. 01:24:42.220 --> 01:24:45.320 It's really, it's either sad, it depends on which way you look at it. 01:24:46.920 --> 01:24:54.840 I mean, you can look at this and weep, it really is funny when Jesus falls in the 01:24:54.840 --> 01:24:57.300 water, I mean when Peter falls in the water, and he tries to walk. 01:24:58.800 --> 01:25:00.040 It's also kind of sad. 01:25:00.400 --> 01:25:01.240 Jesus didn't laugh. 01:25:01.660 --> 01:25:03.140 Jesus said, be a little faithful. 01:25:03.240 --> 01:25:04.080 Why didn't you laugh? 01:25:06.760 --> 01:25:13.540 Everybody's attitude here is judgmental, critical, untrusting, unbelieving, 01:25:14.000 --> 01:25:16.120 and they are all sounding so religious. 01:25:17.680 --> 01:25:19.540 It's a picture of you and me. 01:25:20.600 --> 01:25:26.480 It's a picture of Christians, who trust God a little bit, who believe because 01:25:26.480 --> 01:25:30.340 something that God did for them a long time ago, even last week, that's a long 01:25:30.340 --> 01:25:31.320 time in God's kingdom. 01:25:32.540 --> 01:25:34.380 Because remember, the manna only lasts one day. 01:25:36.360 --> 01:25:38.220 And I think it's real important you understand this. 01:25:39.320 --> 01:25:40.740 This is a picture of us. 01:25:41.000 --> 01:25:42.760 Every person in this chapter. 01:25:42.900 --> 01:25:44.180 This is an incredible story. 01:25:47.260 --> 01:25:47.700 17. 01:25:47.960 --> 01:25:50.500 So when Jesus came, he found that he had already been in the tomb for four days. 01:25:50.880 --> 01:25:53.200 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off. 01:25:53.900 --> 01:25:57.580 And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their 01:25:57.580 --> 01:25:57.820 brother. 01:25:58.220 --> 01:26:00.000 Have any of you ever been to a Jewish funeral? 01:26:02.380 --> 01:26:03.820 It is the loudest. 01:26:04.120 --> 01:26:04.740 The voice... 01:26:07.000 --> 01:26:10.080 They had professional mourners in Israel. 01:26:10.440 --> 01:26:11.120 They still do. 01:26:11.360 --> 01:26:13.920 At a synagogue, or at the doc's funeral. 01:26:14.020 --> 01:26:16.700 You can hire people to weep and wail and cry at your funeral. 01:26:17.480 --> 01:26:19.220 Or at your wife's funeral, your kid's funeral. 01:26:20.480 --> 01:26:21.680 Really get the tears flowing. 01:26:21.740 --> 01:26:24.020 You know how when people are crying, everybody else cries too? 01:26:25.160 --> 01:26:27.200 If you see somebody crying, it makes you... 01:26:27.200 --> 01:26:28.560 it's a chain reaction. 01:26:30.420 --> 01:26:31.200 They had professionals. 01:26:31.280 --> 01:26:35.060 They hired people that were so authentic in their tears. 01:26:37.180 --> 01:26:38.320 Because it was just... 01:26:38.320 --> 01:26:40.880 Remember when Jesus went to heal Jairus' daughter? 01:26:40.880 --> 01:26:41.900 And they were wailing. 01:26:42.920 --> 01:26:44.100 Why don't you guys leave? 01:26:44.160 --> 01:26:45.000 She is always asleep. 01:26:45.720 --> 01:26:47.580 We all sit in our laps in our sleep. 01:26:48.680 --> 01:26:50.040 Where did you get this clown? 01:26:56.250 --> 01:26:56.670 Okay. 01:26:57.030 --> 01:27:00.650 Many of the Jews, verse 19, come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their 01:27:00.650 --> 01:27:00.850 brother. 01:27:01.230 --> 01:27:04.530 Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet him. 01:27:04.630 --> 01:27:06.530 But Mary still sat in the house. 01:27:09.790 --> 01:27:12.190 Martha, therefore, said to Jesus, First words. 01:27:13.770 --> 01:27:14.610 First words. 01:27:16.030 --> 01:27:19.850 Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 01:27:21.510 --> 01:27:22.310 Hi, Lord. 01:27:22.410 --> 01:27:23.210 How have you been? 01:27:24.270 --> 01:27:24.630 No. 01:27:25.190 --> 01:27:26.330 Gee, it's good to see you. 01:27:26.610 --> 01:27:26.890 No. 01:27:27.830 --> 01:27:30.470 Hey, come over and raise my brother from the dead. 01:27:30.690 --> 01:27:30.990 No. 01:27:32.250 --> 01:27:33.690 How's the miracles been going? 01:27:34.290 --> 01:27:35.470 Leave more people to yourself? 01:27:36.150 --> 01:27:36.630 No. 01:27:39.690 --> 01:27:40.890 How's the kingdom of God doing? 01:27:40.990 --> 01:27:43.450 If you would be here, my brother wouldn't have died. 01:27:43.450 --> 01:27:43.650 No. 01:27:43.770 --> 01:27:45.530 Her sister didn't even come out. 01:27:46.690 --> 01:27:49.930 The one that was gazing at his feet, that was so enraptured in Jesus, 01:27:50.030 --> 01:27:50.790 she's sitting in the house. 01:27:51.710 --> 01:27:52.950 I hope this guy's a colony. 01:27:55.170 --> 01:27:57.690 She's so bitter, she won't even leave the house. 01:27:59.630 --> 01:28:03.350 Martha's so bitter, the first thing is, if you, if, if, if, what's this if 01:28:03.350 --> 01:28:04.190 business with God? 01:28:04.910 --> 01:28:09.430 If you would do this, if you had done this, then my life would be the way it 01:28:09.430 --> 01:28:09.670 was. 01:28:13.450 --> 01:28:14.310 Jesus wouldn't have died. 01:28:15.050 --> 01:28:16.610 That's what the whole world does with God. 01:28:17.210 --> 01:28:21.250 If God, if God is so good, then why does he allow this to happen? 01:28:21.450 --> 01:28:23.990 Jesus, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died. 01:28:32.800 --> 01:28:33.240 22. 01:28:34.280 --> 01:28:38.040 And here's her, I told you, here's her even sounding religion. 01:28:38.660 --> 01:28:41.720 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you. 01:28:42.060 --> 01:28:43.700 Now, do you think she means? 01:28:44.200 --> 01:28:45.900 Do you really think she means? 01:28:50.840 --> 01:28:53.260 You'll find out in the next few verses. 01:28:54.560 --> 01:28:56.460 Jesus is a little hopeful, that's what she means. 01:28:58.940 --> 01:29:01.600 Now, this is a little complicated here, but check it out. 01:29:02.340 --> 01:29:05.620 She says to him, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 01:29:05.780 --> 01:29:08.180 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you. 01:29:08.260 --> 01:29:10.920 That is just a bunch of religious hogwash that she's saying. 01:29:11.820 --> 01:29:13.580 You'll find out two verses later. 01:29:14.020 --> 01:29:17.780 So Jesus replies to that statement with, your brother shall rise again. 01:29:19.500 --> 01:29:20.180 You're right. 01:29:20.480 --> 01:29:23.140 She says, even now, whatever you ask, I'll give you. 01:29:23.180 --> 01:29:25.020 So Jesus is saying, okay, I'll raise him from the dead. 01:29:25.460 --> 01:29:26.700 That's what she's saying. 01:29:26.880 --> 01:29:32.620 So she says to him, I know that he'll rise again in the resurrection on the last day. 01:29:33.920 --> 01:29:35.320 I've got my doctrine right. 01:29:35.700 --> 01:29:37.320 I sat under the best teacher, you. 01:29:37.700 --> 01:29:40.640 I know all the theological points of doctrine. 01:29:41.060 --> 01:29:42.240 I know there's going to be a resurrection. 01:29:43.020 --> 01:29:46.080 Martha, Martha, listen. 01:29:46.540 --> 01:29:48.040 I'm the resurrection and the life. 01:29:50.040 --> 01:29:52.080 The resurrection day isn't a part for me. 01:29:52.260 --> 01:29:53.100 Hey, here I am. 01:29:53.160 --> 01:29:54.120 I'm resurrection day. 01:29:54.300 --> 01:29:55.280 Who do you want me to raise from the dead? 01:29:55.340 --> 01:29:55.660 Your brother? 01:29:55.800 --> 01:29:56.320 Here I am. 01:29:58.900 --> 01:30:01.740 He who believes in me shall live even if he dies. 01:30:02.840 --> 01:30:05.120 And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. 01:30:05.200 --> 01:30:05.900 Do you believe this? 01:30:07.100 --> 01:30:08.420 Here's her catechism question. 01:30:08.640 --> 01:30:09.820 That's the way she's taking it. 01:30:10.460 --> 01:30:11.940 She says to him, yes, yes, Lord. 01:30:12.020 --> 01:30:14.560 I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God. 01:30:18.040 --> 01:30:19.540 I believe in this and that and everything. 01:30:19.860 --> 01:30:21.120 I've got my doctrine down. 01:30:24.280 --> 01:30:27.960 And when she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, saying 01:30:27.960 --> 01:30:28.700 secretly. 01:30:29.800 --> 01:30:30.560 Why secretly? 01:30:31.520 --> 01:30:33.340 The Lord is here and he's calling for you. 01:30:37.640 --> 01:30:40.520 Because Mary was stewing. 01:30:41.840 --> 01:30:43.960 Mary's in the house and she's stewing. 01:30:45.420 --> 01:30:47.440 So she takes her aside to talk to her. 01:30:47.540 --> 01:30:48.080 Listen, man. 01:30:48.220 --> 01:30:49.120 Jesus is here. 01:30:50.180 --> 01:30:51.480 He's calling for you. 01:30:53.500 --> 01:30:56.440 She can't say it out in the open because she may turn around and say, so what? 01:30:56.500 --> 01:30:57.280 He should have been here. 01:30:59.060 --> 01:31:02.140 You know how if somebody is in one of those moods, you've got to take them aside 01:31:02.140 --> 01:31:03.760 and talk to them privately? 01:31:06.900 --> 01:31:09.480 Jesus, the Lord is here and he's calling for you. 01:31:09.580 --> 01:31:11.160 The teacher is here and he's calling for you. 01:31:11.600 --> 01:31:14.660 When she heard it, she rose quickly and was coming to him. 01:31:15.740 --> 01:31:19.280 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where 01:31:19.280 --> 01:31:19.440 she had met him. 01:31:19.860 --> 01:31:24.860 The Jews then, who were with her in the house and consoling her, when they saw 01:31:24.860 --> 01:31:28.700 that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going 01:31:28.700 --> 01:31:29.940 to the tomb to weep there. 01:31:30.580 --> 01:31:31.540 Part of the Jewish custom. 01:31:32.780 --> 01:31:33.920 Go to the tomb and you weep. 01:31:35.560 --> 01:31:39.860 Therefore Mary came where Jesus was, she saw him, fell at his feet, 01:31:40.300 --> 01:31:49.720 saying to him, hallelujah, saying to him the exact same words Now, have you ever 01:31:49.720 --> 01:31:51.500 heard a story about yourself with two different people? 01:31:52.080 --> 01:31:53.600 Same words, guess who's been talking? 01:31:54.140 --> 01:31:56.420 The two people that told you the same story about yourself. 01:31:57.940 --> 01:32:01.160 Gossip, backbiting, bad mouth, bad attitude. 01:32:02.420 --> 01:32:04.700 Well, I heard that you said this. 01:32:05.680 --> 01:32:08.180 And the next person to next, I heard that you said this. 01:32:08.480 --> 01:32:09.280 Well, guess where they heard it? 01:32:09.360 --> 01:32:09.900 From each other. 01:32:10.840 --> 01:32:13.040 How do people come out with the same exact words? 01:32:13.660 --> 01:32:15.540 They get together and grumble together. 01:32:16.100 --> 01:32:17.260 Guess who was grumbling together? 01:32:19.200 --> 01:32:21.380 She says the same exact words. 01:32:22.300 --> 01:32:25.180 Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 01:32:27.040 --> 01:32:31.140 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her, 01:32:31.460 --> 01:32:35.700 also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled. 01:32:36.440 --> 01:32:39.560 Does anybody have a footnote on what deeply moved in spirit is? 01:32:41.520 --> 01:32:41.740 No? 01:32:42.940 --> 01:32:43.500 What? 01:32:43.720 --> 01:32:44.120 Troubled. 01:32:44.980 --> 01:32:45.880 Troubled himself. 01:32:46.760 --> 01:32:47.320 Where? 01:32:49.700 --> 01:32:50.140 Here. 01:32:50.140 --> 01:32:51.820 Oh, here it is. 01:32:54.120 --> 01:32:56.500 What do you think deeply moved in spirit means? 01:32:56.880 --> 01:32:57.500 It was troubled. 01:32:58.620 --> 01:33:00.000 You think he was touched? 01:33:00.800 --> 01:33:03.760 If you know you are about to raise somebody from the dead, you are not going 01:33:03.760 --> 01:33:05.820 to get all caught up in the fact the guy is dead. 01:33:07.020 --> 01:33:07.160 Right? 01:33:07.880 --> 01:33:11.320 Say you know, say somebody is blind. 01:33:11.820 --> 01:33:13.140 He has just been struck blind. 01:33:13.360 --> 01:33:16.600 A battery blew up in his face and battery acid has made him blind. 01:33:19.120 --> 01:33:22.160 He was such a great father and he is such a great husband and he is not going to be 01:33:22.160 --> 01:33:23.000 able to do his job. 01:33:23.340 --> 01:33:26.940 And you know without a shadow of a doubt that you are going to touch his eye and he 01:33:26.940 --> 01:33:27.320 is going to see. 01:33:28.380 --> 01:33:31.600 Does it make any sense that you are going to walk in and start wailing and crying 01:33:31.600 --> 01:33:32.520 that he is blind? 01:33:33.740 --> 01:33:39.400 That deeply moved and troubled Jesus is disappointed. 01:33:40.460 --> 01:33:46.180 He is extremely hurt that though he has come with good news telling them your 01:33:46.180 --> 01:33:47.240 brother is going to rise again. 01:33:49.120 --> 01:33:50.580 They ask me and I am going to heal this guy. 01:33:50.600 --> 01:33:51.500 I am going to raise him from the dead. 01:33:51.840 --> 01:33:52.540 They are still weeping. 01:33:52.740 --> 01:33:53.220 They are still crying. 01:33:53.320 --> 01:33:57.800 They don't see five inches in front of their nose that the Lord of life the 01:33:57.800 --> 01:34:00.420 creator of human bodies is right in front of them. 01:34:02.420 --> 01:34:07.040 And he has come on the earth in a human body to come and touch them from God from 01:34:07.040 --> 01:34:11.960 heaven with resurrection with healing with new life 01:34:22.920 --> 01:34:28.340 okay and he said the first thing he said he is not trying to talk some sense into 01:34:28.340 --> 01:34:31.380 Mary like he did Martha hey look the brother is going to rise again he is just 01:34:31.380 --> 01:34:35.680 verbulative he realized words are not going to do any good they failed last time 01:34:35.680 --> 01:34:38.120 I am just going to go raise him from the dead and stop all this stuff. 01:34:39.280 --> 01:34:43.020 They said to him Lord come and see verse 35 01:34:52.880 --> 01:34:53.160 he is sweating 01:34:57.280 --> 01:35:03.280 I believe it is the shortest verse in the bible because it is like a bullet and 01:35:03.280 --> 01:35:11.500 Jesus is really he is weeping his heart is broken they look at him and say oh behold 01:35:11.500 --> 01:35:17.540 how he loves you he is weeping for Lazarus I wouldn't weep for somebody I am going to 01:35:17.540 --> 01:35:22.160 raise him from the dead in five seconds who is he weeping for the people around 01:35:22.160 --> 01:35:26.760 him He is coming to bring resurrection. 01:35:27.160 --> 01:35:29.120 They are still holding funeral services. 01:35:29.560 --> 01:35:32.080 Don't you realize, folks, I'm going to raise this guy from the dead. 01:35:32.120 --> 01:35:33.820 He said it plainly in verse 23. 01:35:34.120 --> 01:35:35.480 Your brother is going to rise again. 01:35:36.120 --> 01:35:36.540 Rejoice! 01:35:41.540 --> 01:35:45.280 Verse 36, And so the Jews were saying, Behold how I love him. 01:35:45.360 --> 01:35:45.900 Set up 37. 01:35:46.060 --> 01:35:50.320 But some of them said, Could not this man who opened the eyes of him who was blind 01:35:50.320 --> 01:35:55.280 and kept this man also from dying put salt in the wound? 01:35:56.000 --> 01:36:01.160 They keep blaming him for something beautiful that God has allowed to happen. 01:36:01.900 --> 01:36:03.120 He sees the end. 01:36:03.500 --> 01:36:05.560 They are just blaming him, rubbing it in. 01:36:05.900 --> 01:36:06.780 He saved others. 01:36:06.880 --> 01:36:07.960 Could he not have saved himself? 01:36:08.180 --> 01:36:10.820 They are doing the same thing they did to him on the cross, right there. 01:36:11.720 --> 01:36:16.280 He is carrying his cross all the way through to the grave of Lazarus. 01:36:16.900 --> 01:36:19.080 They are making fun of him as he does a good deed. 01:36:20.380 --> 01:36:22.080 They are putting a knife in him and turning him. 01:36:22.540 --> 01:36:23.540 They are blaming him. 01:36:23.900 --> 01:36:27.880 They are making him sound like a bad friend, a poor steward, an uncaring 01:36:27.880 --> 01:36:33.160 person, when he is the most caring, compassionate, loving, planning to do a 01:36:33.160 --> 01:36:34.920 wonderful deed to glorify his Father. 01:36:35.680 --> 01:36:41.560 And meanwhile they are putting blame and putting a false impression on his deeds 01:36:41.560 --> 01:36:42.860 and motives. 01:36:42.940 --> 01:36:47.420 Verse 38, Jesus therefore again being deeply moved within, that is what they 01:36:47.420 --> 01:36:49.480 said, came to the tomb. 01:36:50.040 --> 01:36:52.180 Now it was a cave and a stone was lying against it. 01:36:53.020 --> 01:36:55.240 Jesus says, remove the stone. 01:36:57.520 --> 01:37:01.280 I think Martha and Mary ought to get the picture by now of what he is going to do. 01:37:02.620 --> 01:37:06.380 Martha, the sister of the deceased said to him, Lord by this time there will be a 01:37:06.380 --> 01:37:08.400 stench for he has been dead four days. 01:37:10.060 --> 01:37:13.700 Does that leave any doubt that Martha does not have any idea of what he is planning 01:37:13.700 --> 01:37:14.140 to do? 01:37:16.480 --> 01:37:20.200 Either that or maybe she wants to have a sanitary resurrection. 01:37:21.860 --> 01:37:23.040 One without smell. 01:37:23.360 --> 01:37:27.760 Why don't you raise him first through the stone and then we will spray some blade 01:37:27.760 --> 01:37:29.340 air freshener and he can come out. 01:37:33.290 --> 01:37:34.650 She has no concept. 01:37:34.790 --> 01:37:39.630 He says, if your brother is going to rise again, show me where you laid him. 01:37:39.850 --> 01:37:40.850 Remove the stone. 01:37:41.230 --> 01:37:41.650 What does she want? 01:37:41.730 --> 01:37:42.230 A drum roll? 01:37:42.810 --> 01:37:44.450 I mean what does she need? 01:37:44.610 --> 01:37:48.690 Everything is being set up for a most incredible miracle and she is still 01:37:48.690 --> 01:37:49.990 talking about stink. 01:37:52.270 --> 01:37:54.790 They think he just wants to see him one last time. 01:37:54.990 --> 01:37:55.990 Poor guy loves leather. 01:37:56.210 --> 01:37:56.670 So what? 01:38:09.840 --> 01:38:13.100 Did I not say to you, if you believe you will see the glory of God? 01:38:14.300 --> 01:38:15.200 Didn't I tell you? 01:38:16.340 --> 01:38:21.940 So they removed the stone and Jesus raised his eyes and said, Father I thank thee 01:38:21.940 --> 01:38:23.100 that thou hurtest me. 01:38:24.160 --> 01:38:27.960 And I knew that thou hurtest me always, but because of the people standing around 01:38:27.960 --> 01:38:28.500 I said it. 01:38:29.240 --> 01:38:31.000 That they may believe that thou didst send me. 01:38:31.940 --> 01:38:34.360 Now what Jesus is saying is one of the most odd prayers. 01:38:35.040 --> 01:38:37.580 It is a very interesting and odd and unusual prayer. 01:38:38.880 --> 01:38:40.280 God I thank you to hear me. 01:38:40.480 --> 01:38:43.380 Now look, I know you can hear me, but because of them I said it, 01:38:43.560 --> 01:38:44.800 so they will know it is believable. 01:38:46.840 --> 01:38:47.920 I mean that is what he is saying. 01:38:48.820 --> 01:38:50.600 I am not praying to you for my sake. 01:38:51.680 --> 01:38:53.600 I am praying to you for their sake. 01:38:53.700 --> 01:38:58.200 So they realize that you sent me and that you are doing this and that you are 01:38:58.200 --> 01:38:58.860 getting the glory. 01:39:00.200 --> 01:39:05.420 Before he did one of the greatest feats on earth, he brings his father into it in the 01:39:05.420 --> 01:39:06.300 people's eyes. 01:39:06.380 --> 01:39:07.580 And he says why he is doing it. 01:39:08.120 --> 01:39:10.520 He doesn't have to be reminded it is his father doing it. 01:39:10.860 --> 01:39:12.720 He doesn't have to be reminded who is getting the glory. 01:39:13.020 --> 01:39:14.280 He says I am not doing this for me. 01:39:14.800 --> 01:39:16.660 And he said that in front of them to make a point. 01:39:17.360 --> 01:39:19.740 I don't need to give my father glory. 01:39:19.900 --> 01:39:21.620 I live to give my father glory. 01:39:21.840 --> 01:39:26.360 I don't need to say I am giving him glory or point to him, but I am doing it for 01:39:26.360 --> 01:39:26.820 your sake. 01:39:27.400 --> 01:39:29.240 I don't need to be reminded of what Jesus is saying. 01:39:29.300 --> 01:39:30.080 I don't need to be humble. 01:39:30.320 --> 01:39:30.940 I am humble. 01:39:35.690 --> 01:39:41.470 And when he said these things he cried out with a loud voice Lazarus come forth. 01:39:43.170 --> 01:39:49.370 Now Leonard Raimond always says that the reason he said Lazarus come forth is 01:39:49.370 --> 01:39:52.430 because if he would have just said come forth everybody in the cemetery would have 01:39:52.430 --> 01:39:52.770 come out. 01:39:59.070 --> 01:40:01.370 You have to take responsibility for that. 01:40:04.610 --> 01:40:07.250 Lazarus, this great great great grandfather comes out. 01:40:07.770 --> 01:40:19.170 And he who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings and his 01:40:19.170 --> 01:40:21.210 face was wrapped around with cloths. 01:40:21.290 --> 01:40:22.370 He looked like he was in a cocoon. 01:40:23.090 --> 01:40:26.370 Jesus said to them, unbind him and let him go. 01:40:27.410 --> 01:40:36.190 Leonard also points out that people that don't believe So this is the proof that 01:40:36.190 --> 01:40:37.410 there needs to be a second blessing. 01:40:37.790 --> 01:40:39.470 Because new life is not enough. 01:40:40.870 --> 01:40:41.870 New life isn't enough. 01:40:41.950 --> 01:40:44.490 You have to be unbound and let go too. 01:40:45.450 --> 01:40:49.670 He was alive, but he was still all wrapped up in his grave clothes, his stinky grave 01:40:49.670 --> 01:40:50.210 clothes. 01:40:51.610 --> 01:40:54.190 All they could need, he couldn't move, he would have died again. 01:40:54.290 --> 01:40:56.390 If they would have said, Halleluiah, here's a man that's got a party, 01:40:56.510 --> 01:41:00.230 and left him, he would have died again. 01:41:01.210 --> 01:41:05.450 That's how come so many new believers, when Jesus touches them, and they get 01:41:05.450 --> 01:41:09.630 saved, everybody goes, Halleluiah, and they just rejoice, and they forget to 01:41:09.630 --> 01:41:14.790 unbind him from the world, and unbind him from his sins, and unbind him from the 01:41:14.790 --> 01:41:17.150 effects of a life lived to serve self. 01:41:17.770 --> 01:41:20.930 People come out of the grave of the old life all bound up like that. 01:41:22.890 --> 01:41:24.150 And this is a type of that. 01:41:25.050 --> 01:41:28.970 They need to be let go, and unbound, and unwrapped, and washed off. 01:41:29.350 --> 01:41:32.290 Don't think they sat down to eat with this guy while he took a bath. 01:41:43.370 --> 01:41:46.270 He did a great commercial, he did one for Dial Soap. 01:41:50.830 --> 01:41:54.930 Many, therefore, of the Jews who had come to Mary, and beheld what he had done, 01:41:55.390 --> 01:41:56.150 believed in him. 01:41:57.330 --> 01:42:04.130 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them, Can you imagine 01:42:04.130 --> 01:42:06.850 having such a hard, satanic heart? 01:42:07.130 --> 01:42:09.230 You see this, and you go and tell on Jesus? 01:42:11.370 --> 01:42:13.650 That to me, I've never met any. 01:42:13.770 --> 01:42:14.650 Well, maybe I have. 01:42:16.090 --> 01:42:19.930 I've met very few people that have that much evil, that they can see a 01:42:19.930 --> 01:42:24.790 resurrection of a guy that's been dead four days, and the first thing they think 01:42:24.790 --> 01:42:26.450 of is, Oh, I've got to go tell Caiaphas. 01:42:27.990 --> 01:42:29.590 What would be the first thing you'd think of? 01:42:31.710 --> 01:42:35.030 Therefore, the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were 01:42:35.030 --> 01:42:36.690 saying, What are we doing? 01:42:36.790 --> 01:42:38.390 For this man is performing many signs. 01:42:38.670 --> 01:42:42.350 If we let him go on like this, all men will believe in him, and the 01:42:42.350 --> 01:42:46.010 Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. 01:42:47.350 --> 01:42:51.570 In other words, if he keeps doing stuff like this, they're going to crown him 01:42:51.570 --> 01:42:54.750 king, and the Romans are going to get all upset, because people are going to make 01:42:54.750 --> 01:42:55.270 him king. 01:42:56.110 --> 01:42:59.170 Which they do in another chapter, they go riding in Hosanna and the whole 01:42:59.170 --> 01:42:59.550 thing. 01:43:01.670 --> 01:43:05.470 And the Romans are going to take away our place and our nation. 01:43:05.990 --> 01:43:08.550 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, 01:43:08.670 --> 01:43:10.430 said to them, You know nothing at all. 01:43:11.730 --> 01:43:16.730 Nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man should die 01:43:16.730 --> 01:43:19.190 for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish. 01:43:19.190 --> 01:43:23.490 Now this he did not say on his own initiative, but being high priest that 01:43:23.490 --> 01:43:26.610 year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation. 01:43:27.510 --> 01:43:31.050 It's a very interesting narrative by John, isn't it? 01:43:32.070 --> 01:43:33.550 John finds good in everything. 01:43:35.490 --> 01:43:40.610 I think it's a very interesting narrative, because the guy is saying, Hey look, 01:43:41.170 --> 01:43:43.490 let's grub him out and save our nation. 01:43:44.450 --> 01:43:49.090 John is saying, but even though he was high priest, the Holy Spirit still is 01:43:49.090 --> 01:43:51.010 going to give some meaning to that. 01:43:51.550 --> 01:43:55.030 Some spiritual meaning that he was going to die for the sins of the whole nation. 01:43:57.290 --> 01:44:01.230 And not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one. 01:44:01.250 --> 01:44:02.230 This is John still speaking. 01:44:02.870 --> 01:44:06.810 Might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 01:44:07.270 --> 01:44:09.670 So from that day on they plan together to kill him. 01:44:09.670 --> 01:44:13.770 So one resurrection produced one death plot. 01:44:16.770 --> 01:44:20.870 Jesus therefore no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went 01:44:20.870 --> 01:44:23.790 away from there to the country near the wilderness into a city called Ephraim. 01:44:24.210 --> 01:44:25.530 And there he stayed with his disciples. 01:44:26.090 --> 01:44:30.210 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the 01:44:30.210 --> 01:44:32.210 country before the Passover to purify themselves. 01:44:32.530 --> 01:44:36.090 Therefore they were seeking for Jesus and were saying to one another as they stood 01:44:36.090 --> 01:44:37.250 in the temple, What do you think? 01:44:38.050 --> 01:44:39.930 That he won't come to the feast at all? 01:44:40.510 --> 01:44:41.790 Everybody always came to the feast. 01:44:42.030 --> 01:44:43.070 Is he going to be that chicken? 01:44:43.950 --> 01:44:49.050 Because you know he comes to the feast on donkey back with crowds cheering as he 01:44:49.050 --> 01:44:49.930 walks through the town. 01:44:50.810 --> 01:44:52.910 Now the sheep, I mean think about that. 01:44:54.310 --> 01:44:55.570 Is he going to sneak in? 01:44:57.750 --> 01:44:59.670 The king of the zoo, here he comes. 01:45:00.070 --> 01:45:01.610 Who thinks he is going to come in like that? 01:45:02.630 --> 01:45:05.250 Who thinks he is going to come in with floats? 01:45:09.230 --> 01:45:13.630 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where 01:45:13.630 --> 01:45:15.910 he was, he should report it and that they might seize him. 01:45:16.730 --> 01:45:19.690 Then he had his big week before his horrible couple nights. 01:45:21.510 --> 01:45:27.110 Ok, so this chapter is so incredibly simple. 01:45:27.210 --> 01:45:28.170 It is a very simple chapter. 01:45:28.290 --> 01:45:32.170 I mean it is hard to read it and not understand that Jesus is interested in one 01:45:32.170 --> 01:45:33.310 thing, giving his father glory. 01:45:33.410 --> 01:45:36.230 Everybody else is interested in blaming him for the death of his friend. 01:45:37.650 --> 01:45:39.450 Grieving his holy heart. 01:45:41.130 --> 01:45:44.270 And this created of course the beginning and the end for him. 01:45:44.750 --> 01:45:49.130 The Jews began their horrible plots because of this. 01:45:49.470 --> 01:45:55.510 In fact in another couple of verses it says that people were starting to believe 01:45:55.510 --> 01:45:57.210 in Jesus, they had come to see Lazarus. 01:45:57.550 --> 01:46:00.890 And the Jews were planning on putting Lazarus to death because he was living 01:46:00.890 --> 01:46:01.370 proof. 01:46:01.930 --> 01:46:03.750 They were planning to put Lazarus to death. 01:46:06.880 --> 01:46:09.840 So imagine that being one of Jesus' resurrectees. 01:46:10.280 --> 01:46:13.160 People were trying to kill you so they could prove you never did it. 01:46:14.640 --> 01:46:15.780 Get rid of the evidence. 01:46:17.440 --> 01:46:18.420 Alright, any questions? 01:46:21.820 --> 01:46:23.020 Questions or comments? 01:46:27.940 --> 01:46:30.500 Yes, is there anything more in the scriptures about what happened to Lazarus 01:46:30.500 --> 01:46:31.120 after that? 01:46:33.120 --> 01:46:34.220 I mean did he die again? 01:46:34.600 --> 01:46:35.620 I think he did. 01:46:40.740 --> 01:46:43.700 I guess the scripture on the second death didn't apply to him though. 01:46:48.100 --> 01:46:49.220 Yeah, I think he did. 01:46:50.220 --> 01:46:53.000 He might not have, he might still be around hanging out in Bethany, 01:46:53.080 --> 01:46:53.480 I don't know. 01:46:55.700 --> 01:46:57.140 Only one resurrection, right? 01:46:57.280 --> 01:46:58.040 Just waiting around. 01:46:59.140 --> 01:47:00.700 He runs a Bible bookstore in Jerusalem. 01:47:03.460 --> 01:47:05.280 He sells tickets to all the crash concerts. 01:47:10.720 --> 01:47:11.720 Any other questions? 01:47:15.780 --> 01:47:18.700 There is one other place where it says that Jesus went and had dinner there and 01:47:18.700 --> 01:47:19.660 Lazarus was at the table. 01:47:20.580 --> 01:47:22.180 It's in John, I think. 01:47:22.520 --> 01:47:23.560 Next chapter. 01:47:23.740 --> 01:47:27.340 People are coming to believe in Jesus by seeing Lazarus. 01:47:27.860 --> 01:47:28.780 Are you the guy who raised him? 01:47:28.860 --> 01:47:29.840 Yeah, in four days. 01:47:32.100 --> 01:47:34.620 He said come forth and all his stuff was all around him. 01:47:35.280 --> 01:47:36.220 The whole thing is stuff. 01:47:37.360 --> 01:47:37.700 Yes? 01:47:39.100 --> 01:47:43.840 After three days, his body started to decay. 01:47:44.640 --> 01:47:46.970 So Jesus would have to do two miracles. 01:47:48.040 --> 01:47:51.950 To bring him back to life and to restore what part of his body was decayed. 01:47:53.780 --> 01:48:00.740 Well, I think the greatest miracle that has ever been done was Joshua commanding 01:48:00.740 --> 01:48:01.640 the Son to stand still. 01:48:02.580 --> 01:48:06.140 I don't think Joshua realized what he was bargaining for. 01:48:06.140 --> 01:48:10.040 Because he didn't realize that telling the Son to stand still meant telling the earth 01:48:10.040 --> 01:48:10.860 to stand still. 01:48:11.200 --> 01:48:12.380 Because the sun doesn't move. 01:48:14.420 --> 01:48:17.560 How about the sun backing up? 01:48:18.980 --> 01:48:20.520 Yeah, that's a nice idea. 01:48:21.620 --> 01:48:22.860 It has to revert. 01:48:22.860 --> 01:48:22.940 It has to revert. 01:48:30.980 --> 01:48:34.400 Everybody knows if the earth suddenly stood still, we'd be in Milwaukee. 01:48:38.500 --> 01:48:39.760 Sitting in your chair.
