WEBVTT 00:08.390 --> 00:13.310 I was sent a link to this website, and I found that it was really, 00:13.530 --> 00:14.390 really hard to read. 00:15.270 --> 00:20.770 And I did find there was some really great text here, but it was pretty much 00:20.770 --> 00:23.770 impossible for me to read it, so I wasn't going to do that. 00:24.830 --> 00:25.930 But I was shown this. 00:26.030 --> 00:34.410 I'm on Firefox, and you can go to View, enter Reader View, and then you can read 00:34.410 --> 00:35.430 it a lot better. 00:37.090 --> 00:41.490 So, I'm going to read some from this website, BewareDeception.com. 00:43.070 --> 00:49.830 And, you know, you can also do this in other browsers, but I'm not going to get 00:49.830 --> 00:52.770 into how to do that, but it does work in Firefox. 00:53.610 --> 00:58.970 So, there's a lot of good stuff here, but, you know, I know most people are just 00:58.970 --> 01:01.830 going to see the website, and they're not going to want to read it. 01:01.830 --> 01:06.870 I'll leave the link below if you want to check it out to see other pages on there, 01:06.950 --> 01:09.950 but I do suggest putting it into Reader View. 01:10.110 --> 01:12.110 It's much easier to read this way. 01:13.310 --> 01:19.810 And I'm going to read some of this stuff, but I'm just reading because I'm studying. 01:20.730 --> 01:25.510 I am not going to be putting in my beliefs, you know, I'm not saying that 01:25.510 --> 01:29.730 everything I read from this website and everything that I talk about is something 01:29.730 --> 01:30.810 that I believe. 01:31.310 --> 01:36.570 As in my faith, I'm just telling people that I'm studying, and I know a lot of 01:36.570 --> 01:39.830 people like to listen to me when they're at work or something like that. 01:40.330 --> 01:44.250 So, I just make these videos, and you guys can listen to it, and make up your own 01:44.250 --> 01:44.630 minds. 01:45.270 --> 01:49.570 Pray to not be deceived, and pray that God will guide you to the truth. 01:50.770 --> 01:53.330 Yeah, the whole truth, and have faith that He will. 01:54.330 --> 01:58.030 And so, I'm just going to read this, and I might interject once in a while. 01:58.030 --> 02:02.410 I think they talk about eternal souls and stuff like that. 02:02.470 --> 02:03.410 I don't believe in that. 02:06.450 --> 02:09.970 But, you know, for the most part, I'm just going to stay out of it and just 02:09.970 --> 02:11.150 read what's written here. 02:11.650 --> 02:18.310 And then I'm also going to put a video at the end of this, and I'll leave some links 02:18.310 --> 02:21.030 below so that you can study this for yourself. 02:24.030 --> 02:27.010 From BewareDeception.com Who were the Edianites? 02:27.010 --> 02:31.830 The natives of America are commonly called Indians, but strictly speaking, 02:31.970 --> 02:34.050 they are not Indians, and in fact, they never were. 02:34.650 --> 02:38.370 Christopher Columbus ignorantly labeled the natives of America Indians. 02:38.950 --> 02:42.470 He believed mistakenly that the land he discovered was part of the island of Asia, 02:42.810 --> 02:44.050 then called Indies. 02:45.050 --> 02:50.930 The Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedia, Volume 2, on page 20, candidly admits this 02:50.930 --> 02:51.270 fact. 02:51.270 --> 02:57.350 American Indians, indigenous peoples of the Americas, the name Indian was first 02:57.350 --> 03:01.310 applied to them by Christopher Columbus, who believed mistakenly that the mainland 03:01.310 --> 03:04.750 islands of America were part of the Indies in Asia. 03:06.290 --> 03:12.090 Collier's Encyclopedia, Volume 12, on page 642, further corroborates this 03:12.090 --> 03:12.410 fact. 03:12.410 --> 03:17.610 When Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492, he thought he had reached the 03:17.610 --> 03:22.270 islands off the eastern coast of Asia, then known as the Indies, and he called 03:22.270 --> 03:24.630 the villagers who greeted him Indians. 03:26.130 --> 03:28.590 Here we have it in the plain language. 03:28.930 --> 03:30.350 Columbus simply made a mistake. 03:30.810 --> 03:33.510 A mistake which was never corrected by later historians. 03:34.230 --> 03:38.690 The indigenous peoples of the Americas are not, and never were, Indians. 03:38.690 --> 03:41.150 They were known by their tribal names. 03:41.730 --> 03:45.930 The same historians who failed to correct the blunder of Columbus also referred to 03:45.930 --> 03:50.030 Yeshu as Jesus and his earliest followers as Christians. 03:50.710 --> 03:55.370 It is an irrefutable fact that Joseph and Mary and all the relatives of Yeshu never 03:55.370 --> 03:58.110 referred to him by the name Jesus or the title Christ. 03:58.750 --> 04:00.990 Jesus was known by his Hebrew name Yeshu. 04:01.930 --> 04:08.310 Anyway, Yeshu conversed with his relatives and disciples in either Hebrew or Aramaic, 04:08.890 --> 04:10.370 and not in Greek or English. 04:10.910 --> 04:14.450 Therefore, Yeshu never labeled his followers by the name Christians, 04:15.050 --> 04:21.050 since this name is derived from the Greek term christionai, devised in Antioch by 04:21.050 --> 04:22.410 the Paulinist followers. 04:23.410 --> 04:28.390 The teachings and the life of Yeshu, strictly speaking, should not even come 04:28.390 --> 04:33.070 under the heading Christianity, since the Jews in Galilee and Judea never 04:33.070 --> 04:37.670 regarded Yeshu as a Christian or a founder of a new religion, but rather they viewed 04:37.670 --> 04:42.690 Yeshu and his earliest followers as another deviationist sect within Judaism. 04:43.270 --> 04:47.830 The Jewish Encyclopedia, Volume 5, on page 506 corroborates this fact. 04:48.590 --> 04:52.990 Strictly speaking, the career and ministry of Jesus and his relations with his 04:52.990 --> 04:55.570 disciples do not come under the heading Christianity. 04:56.330 --> 05:01.230 They are rather part of the history of Jewish sectarian movements towards the end 05:01.230 --> 05:02.510 of the Second Temple Period. 05:03.470 --> 05:08.950 Before Yeshu even began his ministry, there already were three major sects 05:08.950 --> 05:15.010 within Judaism, Pharisees, Sodomites, Hestenes, and Nazarenes. 05:16.030 --> 05:20.710 Church father Epiphanius, who lived and wrote in the 4th century, testified that 05:20.710 --> 05:24.050 the earliest followers of Yeshu did not call themselves by the name Christian, 05:24.450 --> 05:27.470 but that they were rather identified by the name Nazarene. 05:28.530 --> 05:32.870 The Nazarenes did not apply to themselves the name of Christ or the name Jesus 05:32.870 --> 05:37.290 itself, but the name Nazarene, and all Christians were at that time 05:37.290 --> 05:39.130 similarly called Nazarenes. 05:39.550 --> 05:43.310 But in Antioch, the disciples and the whole Church of God began to be called 05:43.310 --> 05:43.950 Christians. 05:47.430 --> 05:51.870 We also know from the Jewish Talmud that the first followers of Yeshu were not 05:51.870 --> 05:56.050 regarded as followers of a new religion, but rather as members of a deviationist 05:56.050 --> 05:57.130 sect within Judaism. 05:57.710 --> 06:01.950 The Talmud also identifies the first followers of Yeshu as Nazarenes. 06:01.950 --> 06:06.370 Even the Arabs and the Koran refer to the first followers of Yeshu and the community 06:06.370 --> 06:10.070 which he led as Nazrani, that is, Nazarenes. 06:10.590 --> 06:14.890 Even in this day and age, Christians are simply known as Nazarenes among the Arab 06:14.890 --> 06:15.290 Muslims. 06:16.130 --> 06:21.430 Acts 24.5 irrefutably shows that as far as the Jewish populace of Judea and their 06:21.430 --> 06:24.850 leaders were concerned, the followers of Yeshu were simply members of the new sect 06:24.850 --> 06:28.430 within Judaism, which they identified by the name Nazarene. 06:28.430 --> 06:33.070 The Jewish leaders mistakenly assumed that Paul himself was one of the ringleaders of 06:33.070 --> 06:34.190 the Nazarene sect. 06:35.390 --> 06:39.810 It was in Antioch that those who accepted Paul's version of the gospel abandoned the 06:39.810 --> 06:43.850 original name Nazarene and instead began to call themselves by the new name 06:43.850 --> 06:46.230 Christiani, that is, Christians. 06:46.730 --> 06:51.010 At this time, Paul, whose original name was Saul, also abandoned his Hebrew name 06:51.010 --> 06:52.950 and adopted the Roman name Paulus. 06:53.610 --> 07:00.010 Eusebius says that he did so in honor of the proconsul whom he converted to his 07:00.010 --> 07:01.030 version of faith. 07:01.710 --> 07:05.990 The book of Acts clearly shows that Paul was originally always called by his Hebrew 07:05.990 --> 07:06.550 name Saul. 07:07.090 --> 07:11.830 The name change took place in a chapter where he meets the proconsul Sergius 07:11.830 --> 07:12.450 Paulus. 07:12.830 --> 07:16.670 From that point on, Saul is always referred to by his new name Paul. 07:16.670 --> 07:22.790 Acts 13 verses 6-12 It is imperative for you to realize that the new name 07:22.790 --> 07:27.490 Christians was never adopted by the twelve of whom James the Just was the chief. 07:28.130 --> 07:31.430 This is evident by the fact that the Jewish populace in general had no 07:31.430 --> 07:34.950 knowledge of the name Christian, even years after it was adopted by the 07:34.950 --> 07:36.250 Gentile followers of Paul. 07:36.830 --> 07:41.990 Acts 24.5 uses the term Nazarene sect towards the end of Paul's career. 07:41.990 --> 07:46.650 Even the Jews in Rome knew nothing of the new religion called Christianity, 07:47.170 --> 07:50.110 but only of the sect of which the Jews had a bad opinion. 07:50.410 --> 07:55.990 Acts 28 verse 22 The believers in Jerusalem and Galilee retained their 07:55.990 --> 08:00.550 original name and were later also known by their derogatory name, Evianites. 08:01.810 --> 08:06.190 There were many members in the Nazarene sect, as is evident from the book of Acts. 08:06.190 --> 08:13.230 The Nazarenes flourished in Judea and Galilee until in 66 CE when the Romans 08:13.230 --> 08:14.190 besieged Jerusalem. 08:14.750 --> 08:20.210 Just prior to the destruction of Jerusalem, Simeon the cousin of Yeshu was 08:20.210 --> 08:23.570 instructed in a vision to lead the Nazarenes out of the city. 08:24.290 --> 08:27.230 Simeon succeeded James the Just as the leader of the Nazarenes. 08:27.690 --> 08:32.790 A Catholic historian Philip Hughes in his book A History of the Church on page 57 08:32.790 --> 08:39.810 points out Some vision had warned the bishop, Simeon, of the coming troubles, 08:40.070 --> 08:44.610 and the faithful had left the city in time and settled at Pella, in the pagan country 08:44.610 --> 08:45.870 across the Jordan. 08:46.830 --> 08:51.650 Church father Epiphanius wrote, Apostles settled in Pella after the 08:51.650 --> 08:56.570 removal from Jerusalem in consequence of Christ's injunction to leave the city and 08:56.570 --> 08:58.930 emigrate in view of the impending siege. 08:59.490 --> 09:05.470 Teacher, Journal of the Jewish Studies The Encyclopedia of Early Christianity on page 09:05.470 --> 09:07.770 490 gives us the following information. 09:09.050 --> 09:13.650 At the beginnings of the Jewish war against Rome in AD 66, Jewish Christians 09:13.650 --> 09:18.010 in Jerusalem, and perhaps also in Galilee, escaped to Pella in Berea. 09:19.330 --> 09:23.550 As a matter of fact, Yeshu himself warned the disciples to leave Jerusalem when they 09:23.550 --> 09:24.750 see Jerusalem besieged. 09:25.690 --> 09:30.270 And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time 09:30.270 --> 09:31.810 of its destruction has arrived. 09:32.430 --> 09:34.470 Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. 09:35.010 --> 09:37.970 Let those in Jerusalem escape, and those outside the city should not 09:37.970 --> 09:38.930 enter it for the shelter. 09:39.850 --> 09:47.050 Luke 21 verses 20-22 Yeshu specified that the city of Jerusalem, and in particular 09:47.050 --> 09:49.830 its temple, would be destroyed, and that this would be the time of 09:49.830 --> 09:53.290 punishment, so that everything written concerning it could be fulfilled. 09:53.670 --> 10:01.370 Luke 21-22 The Essenes, Nazarenes, and Evianites believe that the destruction 10:01.370 --> 10:05.490 of the temple took place primarily because the Jewish hierarchy and the Sadducee 10:05.490 --> 10:09.330 priests refused to discontinue the sacrificial cults. 10:09.630 --> 10:15.370 In the Evianite Gospel, Yeshu is quoted as saying that unless the Jews abolished the 10:15.370 --> 10:19.550 sacrificial cult, the wrath of God would not depart from them. 10:19.550 --> 10:24.430 In the recognition of Clement, Apostle Peter points out that the 10:24.430 --> 10:28.670 destruction of Jerusalem and its temple was directly brought by God in order that 10:28.670 --> 10:30.290 the sacrificial cult could cease. 10:31.630 --> 10:35.570 Peter pointed out that all those who rejected the sacrificial cult and 10:35.570 --> 10:40.430 practiced vegetarianism would be preserved and would not perish with the rest in the 10:40.430 --> 10:40.670 city. 10:40.670 --> 10:44.450 It is significant to note that the believers who were led by Simeon, 10:44.790 --> 10:48.950 the successor of James the Just, actually escaped and settled in Pella of 10:48.950 --> 10:51.770 Perea, an area which was known as Transjordan. 10:52.730 --> 10:55.990 All historians agree that this was the area where the Jewish Christians, 10:56.230 --> 10:59.610 or the Christian Christians, did later flourish. 11:00.090 --> 11:03.250 The stronghold of the Evianites was in fact the Transjordan. 11:04.750 --> 11:05.430 Rev. 11:05.530 --> 11:06.390 A.F. 11:06.670 --> 11:12.450 Findley, in his book, Byways in Early Christian Literature, on page 87, 11:12.650 --> 11:17.570 says, We are probably correct in regarding these Evianites of Gnosticizing tendency 11:17.570 --> 11:22.670 as the descendants of the Palestinian Christians who fled to Pella before the 11:22.670 --> 11:23.630 destruction of Jerusalem. 11:24.490 --> 11:29.970 The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, on page 433, locates the Evianites 11:29.970 --> 11:31.290 east of the Jordan River. 11:32.450 --> 11:36.650 A sect of Jewish Christians which flourished in the early centuries of the 11:36.650 --> 11:40.790 Christian era, the sect flourished especially on the east of the Jordan. 11:41.590 --> 11:49.210 The Encyclopedia of Religion, volume 4, on page 576-577, states, It is possible 11:49.210 --> 11:53.230 that the Evianites go back to the earliest period of Christian history, when most 11:53.230 --> 11:54.090 Christians were Jews. 11:54.090 --> 11:59.410 If so, they would be the earliest example of a Christian movement within Judaism 11:59.410 --> 12:05.030 that was eventually left behind as Christianity adapted to the influx of 12:05.030 --> 12:06.010 Gentile converts. 12:06.930 --> 12:10.330 These Christians eventually became a distinct group that, along with other 12:10.330 --> 12:11.130 groups, e.g. 12:11.270 --> 12:15.830 the Gnostics, was rejected as heretical by the emerging, great, and quotations, 12:16.010 --> 12:16.250 Church. 12:16.990 --> 12:23.150 They are sometimes identified with the Minim, Heretics, and the Jewish Talmud. 12:23.730 --> 12:28.270 Information on the Evianites is gathered over three centuries, from the middle of 12:28.270 --> 12:32.270 the 2nd to the middle of the 5th, suggesting that the sect had a continuous 12:32.270 --> 12:35.110 history as a distinct group from the earliest period. 12:35.770 --> 12:40.550 The greatest strength of the Evianites was in Palestine and Syria, areas where 12:40.550 --> 12:41.750 Judaism flourished. 12:41.750 --> 12:46.010 One community of Evianites lived in Pella, east of the Jordan River, and claimed to 12:46.010 --> 12:49.290 be descended from the original group of Christians, who were thought to have fled 12:49.290 --> 12:52.250 Jerusalem at the time of the war with Romans in 70 CE. 12:54.290 --> 12:55.610 Encyclopædia Britannica, Vol. 12:55.770 --> 13:02.090 4, on page 344, says, Explicit mention of the Evianites is first found in the works 13:02.090 --> 13:04.530 of Irenaeus, p. 13:05.330 --> 13:09.170 185, and they were known to still exist in the 4th century. 13:09.170 --> 13:14.050 They evidently left Palestine and settled in Transjordan and Syria, and were later 13:14.050 --> 13:16.530 known to be in Asia Minor, Egypt, and Rome. 13:17.370 --> 13:18.950 New Age Encyclopedia, Vol. 13:19.090 --> 13:26.930 9, on page 309, says, Evianites, Hebrew, Evian, poor man, name probably 13:26.930 --> 13:32.010 applied at first to all Christians, later used particularly of an ultra-Jewish 13:32.010 --> 13:35.810 party who, though Christians, remained outside the Catholic Church. 13:36.130 --> 13:37.130 Catholic means universal. 13:37.870 --> 13:43.170 They flourished in the early centuries of the Christian era, particularly on the 13:43.170 --> 13:44.030 east side of the Jordan. 13:45.090 --> 13:50.130 The original followers of Yeshu were known as Essenes and Nazarenes, initially 13:50.130 --> 13:54.270 flourished in Transjordan, but soon afterwards, and especially after the 13:54.270 --> 13:59.270 rebellion of Bar Kochba, the Jewish Messiah, they were stigmatized by the 13:59.270 --> 14:05.630 rabbis of newly emerged Pharisaic Judaism as the deviationist sect, and were 14:05.630 --> 14:08.950 therefore expelled by the rabbis of Normative Judaism. 14:09.470 --> 14:11.230 Encyclopedia Judaica, Vol. 14:11.390 --> 14:17.810 5, on page 511, candidly admits, In due course, the Jewish Christians were 14:17.810 --> 14:21.870 included in the category of those sectarians whom the Jewish community 14:21.870 --> 14:23.870 rejected and anathematized. 14:23.870 --> 14:29.910 The male dictation of the Minim contained in the daily Amidah was introduced, 14:30.390 --> 14:35.570 these reformulated, in order to render impossible Jewish-Christian participation 14:35.570 --> 14:39.330 in the service of the synagogue and to compliment their separation. 14:40.550 --> 14:45.670 That Bar Kochba I mentioned just a few lines ago was the one I mentioned in the 14:45.670 --> 14:46.470 previous video. 14:47.030 --> 14:49.050 So you can see my previous video if you haven't already. 14:52.030 --> 15:00.470 The Nazarenes were lining up with this group of Jews who were fighting against 15:00.470 --> 15:08.530 the people who wanted to get rid of the circumcision, the physical circumcision. 15:08.530 --> 15:13.430 The Romans thought that that was horrible, that you should not do that. 15:14.030 --> 15:20.950 And the Nazarenes and the Jews were saying we have to keep it, so there was an 15:20.950 --> 15:21.370 uprising. 15:22.010 --> 15:27.410 But as soon as the Jews labeled Bar Kochba as the Jewish Messiah, and they forsook 15:27.410 --> 15:33.870 Jesus, then the Nazarenes who said Jesus was their only Messiah had to leave, 15:34.270 --> 15:35.730 so they left that fight. 15:36.410 --> 15:38.970 So that's around the same time period here. 15:40.390 --> 15:42.110 Continuing on on this page. 15:42.910 --> 15:46.250 The original believers and followers of Yeshu who were established by the Twelve 15:46.250 --> 15:49.850 were eventually excommunicated by the rabbis of normative Judaism. 15:50.690 --> 15:53.490 They were despised and rejected as a heretical sect. 15:54.070 --> 15:58.310 Encyclopedia Judaica, Volume 2, on page 3, says that Samuel HaKatan 15:58.310 --> 16:03.170 composed a benediction which targeted the Judeo-Christians, or more specifically, 16:03.370 --> 16:04.090 the Nazarenes. 16:05.010 --> 16:08.150 He did this by applying it to the Jewish heretics. 16:08.710 --> 16:12.550 It is generally assumed that this new formulation was meant to force the 16:12.550 --> 16:14.730 Judeo-Christians out of the Jewish community. 16:15.370 --> 16:19.950 In the Genesau version, the word Nazarim actually occurs. 16:20.590 --> 16:24.810 The Hebrew word Nazarim is the very word by which the first followers of Yeshu were 16:24.810 --> 16:28.650 called by the Jewish populace and the rabbis of normative Judaism. 16:28.650 --> 16:34.250 It is the very name by which those same believers were identified by the Jews in 16:34.250 --> 16:36.070 Acts 24, verse 5. 16:37.130 --> 16:41.450 Yeshu's followers were henceforth forced to abandon the Jewish synagogue since the 16:41.450 --> 16:45.350 new formula required them to pronounce a curse on themselves every time they would 16:45.350 --> 16:47.470 assemble with other Jews in a synagogue. 16:48.350 --> 16:55.050 The participants in the Jewish synagogue were henceforth required to pronounce the 16:55.050 --> 16:56.790 following words in their daily prayers. 16:56.790 --> 17:01.650 May the Nazarenes and the heretics be suddenly destroyed and removed from the 17:01.650 --> 17:02.230 book of life. 17:02.650 --> 17:04.770 Chadwick, The Early Church, page 21. 17:07.990 --> 17:13.110 Ravon Gamaliel II introduced the 18th benediction with the following words. 17:13.770 --> 17:16.610 Let the Nazarenes and the heretics perish in a moment. 17:17.010 --> 17:20.470 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living and let them not be ridden with the 17:20.470 --> 17:20.750 righteous. 17:21.390 --> 17:25.790 Ferguson, The Backgrounds of Early Christianity, pages 461-462. 17:28.650 --> 17:33.670 Henceforth, the Essenes, Nazarenes, Thevianites were no longer recognized by 17:33.670 --> 17:37.070 the Jewish rabbis and they were persecuted and ostracized. 17:37.390 --> 17:41.250 While the Jews were looking for a way to get rid of the Nazarenes, the Paulinist 17:41.250 --> 17:44.910 followers and Christians were transforming his movement into the emerging Catholic 17:44.910 --> 17:45.310 Church. 17:46.070 --> 17:49.990 Thus, the original true followers of Yeshu and the Twelve found themselves in a very 17:49.990 --> 17:50.970 peculiar position. 17:50.970 --> 17:55.750 They were excluded and rejected by the Jewish community as a whole, and at the 17:55.750 --> 17:59.170 same time the emerging Catholic Church refused to acknowledge them as true 17:59.170 --> 18:03.170 believers, but branded them as heretics and gave them a new derogatory name, 18:03.710 --> 18:04.270 Thevianites. 18:05.550 --> 18:09.450 The term in Hebrew simply means poor ones, but the Catholic bishops and the Church 18:09.450 --> 18:13.630 Fathers applied it sarcastically, implying that they had a poor intellect 18:13.630 --> 18:14.310 and understanding. 18:14.310 --> 18:18.870 Since according to them they were poor of intellect due to their damned doctrines 18:18.870 --> 18:23.130 and teachings, Hugh Smith, a Presbyterian writer, in his book, History of the 18:23.130 --> 18:28.850 Christian Church, on pages 69 and 72 states, These Judaizing Christians were 18:28.850 --> 18:33.530 first known by outside world as Nazarenes, abhorred and publicly execrated by the 18:33.530 --> 18:37.310 Jews for their attachment to Christianity, and despised by the Christians for their 18:37.310 --> 18:42.890 prejudice in favor of the Mosaic law they were peculiarly oppressed and unfortunate. 18:43.670 --> 18:49.390 The Encyclopedia of Early Christianity, on page 491, explicitly says concerning 18:49.390 --> 18:53.630 the Jewish Christians, that these groups should disappear is not surprising, 18:54.090 --> 18:58.610 since they did not fit either into post-Temple Judaism nor into the emerging 18:58.610 --> 18:59.470 Catholic Church. 19:00.490 --> 19:06.310 Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas, in their book, The Hiram Key, on page 335, 19:06.470 --> 19:11.990 say the following, A sect called the Evianites was a direct descendant of 19:11.990 --> 19:12.910 James' church. 19:13.330 --> 19:16.330 This sect held teachings of James the Just in high regard. 19:16.850 --> 19:21.370 For a long time after the death of Jesus and James, the terms Evianite and Nazarene 19:21.370 --> 19:26.050 were completely interchangeable and these people were condemned under both names by 19:26.050 --> 19:27.830 the Church of Rome as heretics. 19:29.190 --> 19:34.210 Keith Akers, in his book, The Lost Religion of Jesus, on page 174, 19:34.370 --> 19:40.070 says, Jewish Christians were finally excluded from the Jewish synagogues and 19:40.070 --> 19:41.610 condemned as Jewish heretics. 19:42.270 --> 19:46.310 Suddenly, within a space of a few decades, Jewish Christianity becomes a sect 19:46.310 --> 19:49.130 excluded by both Jews and Christians. 19:49.850 --> 19:54.310 It is during this time that the Evianites probably first emerged as a distinct group 19:54.310 --> 19:58.370 to preserve the religious views they felt had been passed down to them from Jesus 19:58.370 --> 20:01.110 himself through James and his spiritual descendants. 20:02.510 --> 20:07.330 Chadwick, a church historian in his book, The Early Church, on page 23, points out 20:07.330 --> 20:12.050 the following fact, From Irenaeus onwards, Jewish Christianity is treated as a 20:12.050 --> 20:13.190 deviationist sect. 20:13.690 --> 20:18.790 Rather than as a form of Christianity with the best claims to continuity with the 20:18.790 --> 20:22.570 practice of the primitive church at Jerusalem, the Jewish Christians call 20:22.570 --> 20:23.670 themselves Evianites. 20:24.390 --> 20:28.890 The most learned of the church father's origin, who was at the same time most 20:28.890 --> 20:32.970 sympathetic towards the Evianites, explicitly stated that the Jews who 20:32.970 --> 20:36.170 accepted Yeshua were called by the name Evianites. 20:37.070 --> 20:41.270 This is what Hastings Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics, Volume 5, 20:41.410 --> 20:43.910 on page 153, has to say on the subject. 20:44.550 --> 20:49.070 Origin says that these Jews who have received Jesus Christ were all called by 20:49.070 --> 20:50.090 the name Evianites. 20:51.270 --> 20:55.570 A Jewish scholar, Shlomo Pines, in his book, The Jewish Christians of the 20:55.570 --> 20:59.870 Early Centuries of Christianity, according to a new source on page 65, 21:00.130 --> 21:04.550 states, Quite clearly, these Jewish Christians believed that they preserved 21:04.550 --> 21:08.750 and continued the traditions of the first, not yet corrupted, Christian community of 21:08.750 --> 21:12.790 Jerusalem founded by immediate disciples of Jesus who professed his religion. 21:13.750 --> 21:18.930 Rabbi Philip Sigal, in his book, Judaism, the Evolution of a Faith, 21:19.110 --> 21:24.990 on pages 82-83, frankly states, Christian Judaism continued to survive 21:24.990 --> 21:29.150 west of Jordan River and south and east of the Dead Sea, and survived in the 21:29.150 --> 21:33.810 variegated sects known to patristic writers, most notably as Evianites. 21:34.310 --> 21:39.410 The Christian Jewish Church of James predominated until 70 CE, and while 21:39.410 --> 21:43.050 significance of James is diminished in canonical Christian literature, 21:43.330 --> 21:47.770 the now-available Nag Hammadi literature highlights the major role he played. 21:47.770 --> 21:51.810 It is clear that some Christians believe Jesus first appeared to James, 21:52.050 --> 21:55.950 and that the disciples chose James as their legitimate leader of the Church of 21:55.950 --> 21:56.290 Jesus. 21:56.750 --> 22:01.070 This movement, the Evianites, grew increasingly isolated from emergent 22:01.070 --> 22:05.150 Catholic, in quotes, Christianity in the 4th and 5th centuries. 22:05.550 --> 22:09.070 Like I said, Catholic means universal, so they're probably doing quotes because 22:09.070 --> 22:12.390 they're talking about the universal Christianity that's not quite universal 22:12.390 --> 22:13.710 because not everybody accepts it. 22:13.710 --> 22:20.030 Moving on, Leonard George, in Primes of Perception, an Encyclopedia of Heresies 22:20.030 --> 22:25.630 and Heretics, or Evianites, writes, Within a few decades of Jesus' death, 22:25.730 --> 22:29.170 the Christian movement split into two factions, the followers of Paul, 22:29.270 --> 22:32.630 who believed that Christianity was a new religion, completely separate from 22:32.630 --> 22:36.750 Judaism, and the Jewish Christians, who held that Christians should continue 22:36.750 --> 22:39.710 to adhere to the traditional religious practices of the Jews. 22:39.710 --> 22:43.370 The Pauline party developed into Orthodox Catholicism. 22:44.190 --> 22:47.630 A group of Jewish Christians who became known as the Evianites survived as a 22:47.630 --> 22:48.010 heresy. 22:48.650 --> 22:52.510 The doctrinal position of the Evianites overlapped the beliefs of the Jews and 22:52.510 --> 22:55.990 Orthodox Christians and caused them to be condemned by both. 22:56.710 --> 23:01.510 In turn, the Evianites regarded the Jews as unenlightened and damned Paul as the 23:01.510 --> 23:02.590 first Christian heretic. 23:03.350 --> 23:06.710 The sect proclaimed that most of the scriptures the Catholics revered were not 23:06.710 --> 23:07.190 authentic. 23:08.410 --> 23:12.830 Even though the Evianites were direct descendants of the Jerusalem and Galilean 23:12.830 --> 23:16.790 believers, the emerging Catholic Church and virtually all of the Church Fathers 23:16.790 --> 23:20.790 vigorously opposed them and regarded them as heretics, condemning them and 23:20.790 --> 23:21.710 ostracizing them. 23:23.010 --> 23:25.530 The Anglican scholar David L. 23:25.610 --> 23:30.750 Edwards, in his book The Real Jesus, on page 39, candidly admits that Evianites 23:30.750 --> 23:34.810 were direct descendants of Yeshu and his earliest followers, and explicitly states 23:34.810 --> 23:38.910 that both the Orthodox Jews and the Paulinist Christians despised them and 23:38.910 --> 23:40.170 condemned them as heretics. 23:40.890 --> 23:46.250 Early in the 4th century, the Church historian Eusebius recorded a tradition 23:46.250 --> 23:50.210 that the Christian had escaped from Jerusalem when the trouble began, 23:51.190 --> 23:54.570 but it is certain that they became a small group which was regarded by fellow 23:54.570 --> 23:58.090 Christians as well as by all Orthodox Jews as heretical. 23:58.710 --> 24:01.390 Their version of Christianity came to be called Evianite. 24:01.390 --> 24:06.210 Yet it was based on a count of Jesus given by his own family and by his earliest 24:06.210 --> 24:06.710 followers. 24:08.410 --> 24:12.210 Edwards, although Anglican, candidly admits and frankly states that the 24:12.210 --> 24:16.290 original believers who escaped from Jerusalem were regarded as heretics by the 24:16.290 --> 24:20.910 mainstream of Christianity, the Paulinist Christianity, which was then emerging into 24:20.910 --> 24:22.050 the Roman Catholic Church. 24:22.650 --> 24:26.250 Edwards is aware of the fact and actually says that it is certain that these 24:26.250 --> 24:30.890 believers who migrated to Transjordan called themselves Evianites and that they 24:30.890 --> 24:34.590 actually preserved their version of faith which was based on the testimony of the 24:34.590 --> 24:38.430 closest relatives of Yeshu and its earliest and closest associates, 24:38.690 --> 24:39.510 the Twelve Apostles. 24:41.330 --> 24:46.210 The Jewish scholar Chaim Maccabi in his book, The Mythmaker, Paul and the 24:46.210 --> 24:53.190 Invention of Christianity on pages 179 and 182 says, Thus, the Evianites, 24:53.630 --> 24:57.470 by their continued belief in Jesus as the prophet and Messiah, were increasingly cut 24:57.470 --> 25:00.150 off from the developing activity of rabbinical Judaism. 25:00.830 --> 25:05.250 Yet it was probably not until about 135 that the Evianites were finally declared 25:05.250 --> 25:07.670 heretics by the Pharisee rabbis. 25:08.430 --> 25:13.570 Gentile Christianity, however, unlike Evianite Christianity, was never 25:13.570 --> 25:18.050 declared heretical since it was too far removed from Judaism to be regarded as a 25:18.050 --> 25:18.930 heretical form of it. 25:19.750 --> 25:24.690 The Evianites were thus in the unhappy position of being ostracized both by what 25:24.690 --> 25:28.750 was now main body of Christians, the Catholic Church, and by the Jews. 25:29.770 --> 25:33.810 The pressure to join one or the other of these two religions was enormous and by 25:33.810 --> 25:38.090 the 4th century the Evianites had ceased to be a discernible separate community. 25:38.810 --> 25:43.430 Constantly they have tended to be disregarded and despised by historians. 25:43.430 --> 25:48.250 Yet what remains of their testimony about the origins of Christianity is of unique 25:48.250 --> 25:51.990 importance, for unlike the Catholic Church, they were directly linked to the 25:51.990 --> 25:53.990 Jerusalem Church, and thus to Jesus himself. 25:55.050 --> 25:58.810 Their testimony about Paul and the circumstances in which he broke with the 25:58.810 --> 26:03.190 Jerusalem Church deserves to be treated with respect, not with the usual scornful 26:03.190 --> 26:03.730 dismissal. 26:04.810 --> 26:08.390 The Evianites did not survive for the simple reason that they were persecuted 26:08.390 --> 26:10.410 out of existence by the Catholic Church. 26:10.410 --> 26:15.130 When this oppression was lifted for any reason, for example when an area changed 26:15.130 --> 26:18.650 from Christian to Muslim rule, they sometimes came out of hiding and 26:18.650 --> 26:20.110 resumed an open existence. 26:20.830 --> 26:28.010 There is even evidence from the works of the Jewish philosopher Zadaia that this 26:28.010 --> 26:29.750 happened as late as the 10th century. 26:31.070 --> 26:35.270 The Evianites suffered persecution by their countrymen, the Jews, just as Yeshua 26:35.270 --> 26:35.970 said they would. 26:36.670 --> 26:40.650 But they were also ostracized and damned by the fellow Christians, who allegedly 26:40.650 --> 26:42.690 believed in Yeshua in fall of the 12th. 26:43.310 --> 26:47.750 Yeshua did say to his disciples that a time would come that whomever kills them 26:47.750 --> 26:49.510 would think they would do God a service. 26:50.750 --> 26:54.930 Man, Myth, and Magic, the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Mythology, Religion, 26:55.070 --> 26:59.450 and the Unknown, Art, Evianites, states, Remnants of Jewish Christianity 26:59.450 --> 27:04.590 survived in various places in Palestine, Syria, and Egypt until the 5th century. 27:04.590 --> 27:07.890 Its members clung to the original tenets of their faith. 27:08.510 --> 27:12.110 They are known only through the garbled and prejudiced accounts of Orthodox 27:12.110 --> 27:14.650 Christian writers who regarded them as heretics. 27:15.350 --> 27:19.350 They are named either Evianites or Nazareans, and various strange beliefs and 27:19.350 --> 27:20.570 customs are ascribed to them. 27:22.590 --> 27:26.590 The church fathers and the bishops of the emerging Catholic Church condemned the 27:26.590 --> 27:28.310 Evianites and branded them as heretics. 27:28.310 --> 27:34.290 Andrew Welburn, who was originally a fellow at the Warburg Institute at the 27:34.290 --> 27:38.350 University of London, but is now fellow of New College, Oxford, argues that the 27:38.350 --> 27:41.770 church fathers got it all wrong and that the Evianites were not heretics, 27:42.130 --> 27:44.590 but rather those who preserved original and true faith. 27:45.150 --> 27:49.270 In his book, The Beginnings of Christianity, on pages 86-87, Welburn 27:49.270 --> 27:54.870 writes, The church fathers described the Evianites as a heretical sect, 27:55.330 --> 27:59.290 which they certainly were not, or at least were not until the later 27:59.290 --> 28:00.950 church thrust that role upon them. 28:01.970 --> 28:06.950 Yeshua said to his disciples that they can only expect to be treated as he was, 28:07.210 --> 28:11.470 since he was regarded as heretic by the mainstream Judaism of his day and in fact 28:11.470 --> 28:13.170 was killed for his heretical views. 28:13.170 --> 28:17.510 It was only to be expected that his immediate followers were to be also 28:17.510 --> 28:21.310 regarded as heretics and that for their views would have to pay with their lives. 28:22.110 --> 28:27.310 Yeshua never envisaged that his followers would comprise a large and powerful 28:27.310 --> 28:31.310 movement aligned with the secular kingdoms, as was the case with the 28:31.310 --> 28:32.630 emerging Catholic Christianity. 28:33.530 --> 28:35.230 So who were the Evianites? 28:35.710 --> 28:39.830 They were true believers who were directly linked to Jerusalem apostles and therefore 28:39.830 --> 28:40.590 to Yeshua. 28:41.470 --> 28:45.330 The second page I'll be reading from is called Evianite Beliefs and Practices. 28:46.550 --> 28:50.630 In this article I will only point out some major beliefs and practices of the 28:50.630 --> 28:55.570 Evianites which are known from patristic writings of the early centuries and some 28:55.570 --> 28:59.010 surviving documents which apparently stem from the Evianites themselves. 28:59.710 --> 29:03.370 In some of my other articles, these beliefs and practices are vindicated. 29:03.370 --> 29:07.370 The first thing I want to point out is the fact that the Evianites had a very 29:07.370 --> 29:11.750 peculiar attitude towards the Jewish Pentateuch and the Bible in general. 29:12.370 --> 29:16.170 They argued that the Jewish Pentateuch was falsified and that it contained many 29:16.170 --> 29:19.370 periscopes which were of diabolical origin. 29:20.630 --> 29:24.010 They likewise believed that the Old Testament as a whole was corrupted by the 29:24.010 --> 29:27.230 Jewish scribes and was not preserved in its original form. 29:27.230 --> 29:34.110 Of the canonical gospels, they only accepted Matthew in its original Hebrew 29:34.110 --> 29:34.490 form. 29:36.910 --> 29:39.750 They outrightly rejected all the epistles of Paul. 29:40.190 --> 29:44.350 The first Evianite doctrine therefore holds that the Bible is fallible and that 29:44.350 --> 29:47.830 not everything in the Bible is inspired or should be believed and practiced. 29:48.430 --> 29:50.730 The following references will demonstrate this fact. 29:50.730 --> 29:56.590 Church Father Epiphanius, who knew some Evianites personally, testifies that they 29:56.590 --> 30:00.690 did not accept the entire Jewish Pentateuch, but rather suppressed and 30:00.690 --> 30:01.870 rejected certain passages. 30:03.070 --> 30:06.650 They do not accept the whole of the Pentateuch of Moses, but suppress certain 30:06.650 --> 30:07.150 passages. 30:07.510 --> 30:14.850 Panarion 38 Epiphanius repeats this statement in Panarion 38. 30:16.070 --> 30:20.390 The Evianites believed that the original Pentateuch of Moses was corrupted by the 30:20.390 --> 30:23.790 lying scribes and contained many falsehoods which, according to them, 30:23.890 --> 30:25.970 were contrary to the nature and character of God. 30:26.510 --> 30:30.190 They claimed that it was the mission of Jesus to purge these falsehoods and 30:30.190 --> 30:31.550 restore the true Pentateuch. 30:31.550 --> 30:35.890 Rabbi Philip Segal, in his book, Judaism, the Evolution of a Faith, 30:36.030 --> 30:43.410 on page 83 states, They regarded him, Jesus, as the last and greatest of the 30:43.410 --> 30:47.090 prophets of Israel who restored a corrupted Torah of Moses to its original 30:47.090 --> 30:47.530 state. 30:48.790 --> 30:51.890 Professor Ferguson, in his book, The Backgrounds of Early Christianity, 30:52.290 --> 30:57.790 on page 578, says of the Evianites, They removed many passages from the Old 30:57.790 --> 31:02.090 Testament as false periscopes, claiming that passages about animal 31:02.090 --> 31:06.750 sacrifice and the monarchy and offensive stories about the patriarchs were 31:06.750 --> 31:07.830 interpolations. 31:08.490 --> 31:13.550 A Jewish encyclopedia, Our Jewish Christian Sex, on page 39 says, 31:14.130 --> 31:19.350 Similarly discarded were all passages of the Bible providing for kingship, 31:19.510 --> 31:21.430 an institution which they abhorred. 31:21.430 --> 31:27.510 All anthropomorphic expressions of God and unpraiseworthy stories about the 31:27.510 --> 31:32.970 representatives of true prophecy, e.g., Adam's sin, Noah's drunkenness, 31:33.310 --> 31:35.450 Abraham and Jacob's polygamy, etc. 31:36.850 --> 31:41.050 Catholic Cardinal Danilu, in his book, The Theology of Jewish Christianity, 31:41.310 --> 31:46.470 on page 64, says of the Evianites, They see Jesus as a reformer of the law 31:46.470 --> 31:48.950 who brings it back to the true ideas of Moses. 31:49.590 --> 31:54.390 As it exists in Judaism, the law seems to them to be mixed with elements of 31:54.390 --> 31:57.690 diabolical origin which are later than Moses'. 31:58.390 --> 32:02.410 From the preachings of Apostle Peter preserved in the Clementine homilies, 32:02.850 --> 32:06.410 where many ideas and beliefs of the Evianites are preserved, we find that 32:06.410 --> 32:09.130 Peter held a very negative opinion of the Jewish scriptures. 32:09.130 --> 32:15.170 In homily 2, chapter 38, Peter says, For the scriptures have had joined to them 32:15.170 --> 32:20.410 many falsehoods against God, after a little the written law had added to it 32:20.410 --> 32:23.250 certain falsehoods contrary to the law of God. 32:23.730 --> 32:30.110 In homily 3, chapter 9, Peter says, Worthy, therefore, of rejection is 32:30.110 --> 32:34.230 everyone who is willing so much as to hear anything against the monarchy of God. 32:34.750 --> 32:39.090 But if anyone dares to hear anything against God as trusting in the scriptures, 32:39.670 --> 32:44.890 let him first of all consider with me that if anyone, as he pleases, form a dogma 32:44.890 --> 32:49.130 agreeable to himself, and then carefully asserts the scriptures, he will be able to 32:49.130 --> 32:52.730 produce many testimonies from them in favor of the dogma that he has formed. 32:52.730 --> 32:58.170 How, then, can confidence be placed in them against God when what every man 32:58.170 --> 32:59.430 wishes is found in them? 33:00.750 --> 33:03.830 A side note is, I've actually said something similar to that before, 33:03.970 --> 33:08.550 where I'd say people can read into the Bible whatever they want to read. 33:08.670 --> 33:14.070 If they believe Jesus is God, then they will read verses to say that Jesus is God. 33:14.370 --> 33:18.170 If they don't believe Jesus is God, they will read verses and see that it does 33:18.170 --> 33:19.650 not say that Jesus is God. 33:19.650 --> 33:24.110 The same Bible, people are using the exact same Bible, it will say different things 33:24.110 --> 33:26.890 to them because people will cling to what they believe. 33:27.510 --> 33:31.470 You have to let go of what you think they should say and you have to trust the Holy 33:31.470 --> 33:32.950 Spirit to lead you to all truth. 33:33.790 --> 33:34.790 Back to the article. 33:35.810 --> 33:41.390 In Homily 2, chapter 52, Peter rejects several well-known passages of the Jewish 33:41.390 --> 33:45.810 Pentateuch which deal with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, and Moses. 33:45.810 --> 33:50.070 Peter states that these passages which he condemns and rejects are impious 33:50.070 --> 33:50.930 imaginations. 33:52.530 --> 33:56.430 Assuredly, with good reason, I neither believe anything against God nor anything 33:56.430 --> 34:01.130 against the just men recorded in the law, taking for granted that they are impious 34:01.130 --> 34:01.930 imaginations. 34:02.390 --> 34:06.870 For as I am persuaded, neither was Adam a transgressor, who was fashioned by the 34:06.870 --> 34:11.730 hands of God, nor was Noah drunken, who was found righteous above all the 34:11.730 --> 34:16.030 world, nor did Abraham live with three wives at once, who on account of his 34:16.030 --> 34:20.630 sobriety was thought worthy of innumerous posterity, nor did Jacob associate with 34:20.630 --> 34:24.870 four, of whom two were sisters, who was the father of the twelve tribes, 34:25.250 --> 34:27.930 and who intimated the coming of the presence of our Master. 34:28.490 --> 34:33.030 Nor was Moses a murderer, nor did he learn to judge from an idolatrous priest. 34:33.530 --> 34:37.830 He who set forth the law of God to all the world and for his right judgment has been 34:37.830 --> 34:40.190 testified to as a faithful steward. 34:41.290 --> 34:45.190 In Homily 2, Chapter 51, Peter explicitly says, 34:57.950 --> 35:01.350 Peter repeats this assertion in Homily 3, Chapter 50, 35:10.830 --> 35:16.770 And finally, Peter repeats this in Homily 18, Chapter 20, in more elaborate form. 35:40.190 --> 35:45.330 Peter also, he says, wishing to exhibit the cause of their error more distinctly 35:45.330 --> 35:49.730 to them, On this account ye do err, not knowing the true things of the 35:49.730 --> 35:53.210 Scriptures, on which account ye are ignorant also of the power of God. 35:53.730 --> 35:57.390 Wherefore every man who wishes to be saved must become, as the teacher said, 35:57.810 --> 35:59.910 a judge of the books written to try us. 36:00.310 --> 36:02.870 For thus he spake, become experienced bankers. 36:03.510 --> 36:07.130 Now the need of bankers arises from the circumstance that the spurious is mixed 36:07.130 --> 36:07.750 with the genuine. 36:09.050 --> 36:13.490 The statement of Jesus concerning experienced bankers was also known to the 36:13.490 --> 36:18.090 church father, Origen, who quotes it in his commentary on John 19, verse 7. 36:38.390 --> 36:42.990 The Ebionites vigorously repudiated and condemned these teachings, which for them 36:42.990 --> 36:44.290 were blasphemous doctrines. 36:45.010 --> 36:48.730 Catholic Cardinal Danilu, in his book, The Theology of Jewish Christianity, 36:49.030 --> 36:50.610 on page 63, points out, 37:07.750 --> 37:12.550 a point they make very clear, it was at his baptism that a power from God 37:12.550 --> 37:13.470 descended on him. 37:14.030 --> 37:16.530 The Ebionites are radically anti-Trinitarian. 37:17.710 --> 37:22.370 Church historian Eusebius, who lived and wrote in the 4th century, testified that 37:22.370 --> 37:26.130 Ebionites did not believe in the virgin birth of Jesus, and that they denied his 37:26.130 --> 37:26.430 deity. 37:27.590 --> 37:31.870 The heresy of the Ebionites, as it is called, asserts that Christ was born of 37:31.870 --> 37:35.130 Joseph and Mary, and supposes him to be a mere man. 37:35.990 --> 37:40.010 Rabbi Philip Segal, in his book, Judaism, Evolution of a Faith, 37:40.170 --> 37:41.650 on page 82, says, 37:56.310 --> 38:00.130 Encyclopedia of Religion, volume 4, on page 576, states, 38:05.130 --> 38:07.810 He was an exceptional man in the line of Jewish prophets, as described in 38:07.810 --> 38:11.410 Deuteronomy 1815, and denied the virgin birth. 38:12.350 --> 38:16.190 Professor James Dunn, in his book, Unity and Diversity in the New Testament, 38:16.450 --> 38:21.870 on pages 241 and 242, expressly states, One of the most frequently attested 38:21.870 --> 38:26.450 features of Ebionite Christology is their affirmation that Jesus' birth was wholly 38:26.450 --> 38:26.930 natural. 38:27.550 --> 38:29.510 He was the natural son of Joseph and Mary. 38:30.810 --> 38:36.150 Apostle Peter, in the Clementine Homilies, Homilies 16, chapters 15-17, says, 38:51.190 --> 38:57.030 It is the peculiarity of the Father not to have been begotten, but of the Son to have 38:57.030 --> 38:57.790 been begotten. 38:58.290 --> 39:04.090 He who is not the same in all respects as someone cannot have all the same 39:04.090 --> 39:06.690 appellations applied to him as that person. 39:07.270 --> 39:11.930 If the one happens to be self-begotten or unbegotten, they cannot be called the 39:11.930 --> 39:12.270 same. 39:12.270 --> 39:17.310 Nor can it be asserted of him who has been begotten that he is of the same substance 39:17.310 --> 39:19.430 as he is who has begotten him. 39:20.350 --> 39:21.270 Learn this also. 39:21.710 --> 39:25.710 The bodies of men have immortal souls which have been clothed with the breath of 39:25.710 --> 39:26.030 God. 39:26.430 --> 39:30.510 And having come forth from God, they are of the same substance, 39:30.710 --> 39:31.810 but they are not gods. 39:32.190 --> 39:36.450 But if they are gods, then in this way the souls of men, both those who have died and 39:36.450 --> 39:40.250 those who are alive, and those who shall come into being, are gods. 39:40.250 --> 39:44.430 But if, in the spirit of controversy, you maintain that these are also gods, 39:44.750 --> 39:47.390 what great matter is it then for Christ to be called God? 39:47.910 --> 39:50.090 For he has only what we all have. 39:50.610 --> 39:55.950 We call him God, who peculiar attributes cannot belong to the nature of any other. 39:56.390 --> 40:00.510 For as he is called the unbounded because he is boundless on every side, 40:01.050 --> 40:06.250 it must of necessity be the case that it is no other man's peculiar attribute to be 40:06.250 --> 40:07.670 called unbounded. 40:07.670 --> 40:12.470 As another cannot, in like manner, be boundless, but if any one says that is 40:12.470 --> 40:13.590 possible, he is wrong. 40:14.550 --> 40:17.250 For two things boundless on every side cannot coexist. 40:18.710 --> 40:20.410 For the one is bounded by the other. 40:21.070 --> 40:25.150 Thus it is in the nature of things that the unbegotten is one. 40:27.170 --> 40:30.770 And of course I don't believe in eternal souls, because that's a pagan belief and 40:30.770 --> 40:31.610 not found in the Bible. 40:32.910 --> 40:37.490 The Ebionites were strict Unitarians and vigorously opposed the Trinitary dogma. 40:38.150 --> 40:42.290 They believed that there is only one supreme and sovereign God who is truly and 40:42.290 --> 40:43.230 genuinely God. 40:44.030 --> 40:48.170 They argued that even Jesus, who was the greatest of all the prophets, acknowledged 40:48.170 --> 40:51.050 him as God and prayed to him and worshipped him. 40:51.570 --> 40:55.570 The Almighty God and Father of Jesus never prayed to Jesus or ever bowed down in 40:55.570 --> 40:56.350 worship before him. 40:56.350 --> 41:00.730 The Ebionites also rejected the Jewish sacrificial cultists and practiced 41:00.730 --> 41:01.750 vegetarianism. 41:02.410 --> 41:06.810 They also abstained from wine and other intoxicating beverages. 41:07.830 --> 41:12.430 They insisted that Adam was a true prophet and therefore rejected the original sin 41:12.430 --> 41:13.650 dogma of Catholic Christianity. 41:14.870 --> 41:18.950 They maintained that Jesus' mission was strictly to teach and it had nothing to do 41:18.950 --> 41:20.650 with Christian dogma of atonement. 41:21.530 --> 41:25.850 They believed and dogmatically taught that Jesus was murdered by the Jews simply 41:25.850 --> 41:29.650 because they could not accept his views and doctrines and that it had nothing to 41:29.650 --> 41:34.390 do with atonement or paying the penalty for the supposed sin of Adam or that of 41:34.390 --> 41:35.170 his posterity. 41:36.390 --> 41:40.950 When the Ebionites observed the so-called Lord's Supper or Eucharist commemorating 41:40.950 --> 41:45.630 Jesus' death, they did not use wine but only water, proving that they did not 41:45.630 --> 41:46.850 believe in the blood atonement. 41:46.850 --> 41:52.350 Cardinal Danilu, in his book, The Theology of Jewish Christianity, on pages 63-64, 41:52.510 --> 41:57.550 writes to the Ebionites, They also reject any aspect of Christianity which makes it 41:57.550 --> 41:58.590 a religion of salvation. 41:59.290 --> 42:01.450 For them, Christ's mission is simply of teaching. 42:01.990 --> 42:05.850 They see Jesus as a reformer of the law who brings it back to the true idea of 42:05.850 --> 42:06.130 Moses. 42:06.890 --> 42:12.190 As it exists in Judaism, the law seems to them to be mixed with elements of 42:12.190 --> 42:16.010 diabolical origin which are of later dates than Moses'. 42:16.730 --> 42:21.410 The elements to be rejected are primarily the temple worship and in particular the 42:21.410 --> 42:22.370 bloody sacrifices. 42:23.010 --> 42:27.390 Great scholar Dr. Larson, in his book, The Essene Heritage, points out, 42:27.950 --> 42:32.010 It was the basic Essene doctrine that sin did not derive from Adam but from the 42:32.010 --> 42:34.390 activities of the fallen angels known as the Watchers. 42:35.010 --> 42:37.730 Some of the lower angels came to this earth to give instructions. 42:38.270 --> 42:40.710 They became degenerate and could no more ascend to heaven. 42:41.270 --> 42:45.110 This was the Fall, precisely as we learn in Enoch and Jubilees. 42:45.110 --> 42:49.250 This, according to Essene, the Evianite doctrine, was the origin of that dreadful 42:49.250 --> 42:49.770 impiety. 42:50.430 --> 42:54.890 The eating of meat, blood, thus shed, polluted the air with noxious vapors. 42:55.350 --> 43:00.490 Mankind was filled with diseases and death came prematurely and in agony. 43:01.610 --> 43:07.870 The Dictionary of Historical Theology, Art, Evianites, on page 167, points out 43:07.870 --> 43:12.590 that the Evianites rejected Paul's teaching concerning Sodeurology and Blood 43:12.590 --> 43:13.070 Atonement. 43:13.630 --> 43:15.650 He, Jesus, was the true prophet. 43:16.470 --> 43:17.070 C.F. 43:17.190 --> 43:22.150 Deuteronomy 18, 15-22 A second Moses, a teacher and reformer. 43:22.270 --> 43:23.210 He was not a priest. 43:23.350 --> 43:27.730 Rather, he came to abolish the sacrificial cultus and to restore the true spiritual 43:27.730 --> 43:29.330 meaning of the Mosaic Code. 43:30.290 --> 43:35.030 The Pauline construal of the death of Jesus as sacrifice was therefore wrong. 43:35.030 --> 43:40.670 The name Christ was given to Jesus at his baptism when God adopted him as his 43:40.670 --> 43:41.610 messianic prophet. 43:42.810 --> 43:47.110 The Evianites maintained a strong eschatological hope the Son of Man 43:47.110 --> 43:51.310 transfigured into supra-angelic form would return in glory. 43:51.910 --> 43:59.310 The twin foci of Evianite Christology were thus, Baptism and Perugia, not Incarnation 43:59.310 --> 44:00.170 and Atonement. 44:00.170 --> 44:04.590 The Evianites maintained that living water was not the blood of the sacrificial 44:04.590 --> 44:09.970 victim, purified the convert, and was administered for the remission of sins. 44:10.990 --> 44:15.190 They therefore focused on two major doctrines, Baptism and Perugia, 44:15.410 --> 44:16.770 the return of Jesus in glory. 44:17.350 --> 44:22.030 The Catholic Christianity, and later also the Protestant Christianity, focused on 44:22.030 --> 44:27.610 Incarnation, God in the flesh theory, and Atonement, the human sacrifice of 44:27.610 --> 44:30.930 Jesus in order to appease the wrath of God and atone for the sin of Adam. 44:31.790 --> 44:36.430 The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Volume 2, Art Evianites, 44:36.570 --> 44:42.170 on page 10, says Jesus was for them the great reformer of the law, whereas Paul 44:42.170 --> 44:43.410 was its distorter. 44:43.890 --> 44:48.490 The Evianites also believed that the grace of baptism put an end to all sacrifices. 44:49.290 --> 44:53.030 The destruction of the temple was brought about by God because of the Jews' refusal 44:53.030 --> 44:55.510 to discontinue the temple's sacrificial system. 44:55.510 --> 44:58.690 Christianity for them was not a religion of salvation. 44:59.410 --> 45:01.350 Jesus came not to save, but to teach. 45:01.890 --> 45:04.410 He stood in a direct line with the great prophet. 45:05.050 --> 45:06.730 Prophetism climaxed in him. 45:07.190 --> 45:10.950 He came after Adam and Moses to reform and purify Judaism. 45:11.870 --> 45:16.390 Man, Myth, and Magic, the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Mythology, Religion, 45:16.570 --> 45:23.170 and the Unknown, Art St. Paul, on page 2152, points out He, Paul, 45:23.710 --> 45:29.750 imagines that before a series of world ages, aeonials, of which present is the 45:29.750 --> 45:35.970 last, God planned to save mankind from their subjection to the Archetones. 45:35.970 --> 45:40.410 The plan took the form of deceiving the Archetones by sending into the world a 45:40.410 --> 45:45.690 preexistent divine being designated the, quote, Lord of Glory, end quote, 45:46.010 --> 45:48.970 who was incarnated in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. 45:49.470 --> 45:54.110 Not recognizing his true nature, the Archetones crucified Jesus and thereby 45:54.110 --> 45:56.250 forfeited their hold over mankind. 45:57.170 --> 46:00.930 The implication of Paul's brief but pregnant statements were worked out by 46:00.930 --> 46:05.530 later Christian theologians into what became the classic form of the doctrine of 46:05.530 --> 46:05.970 salvation. 46:07.270 --> 46:13.330 Paul thus identified Jesus as the incarnation of the, quote, Lord of Glory, 46:13.890 --> 46:18.370 as he interpreted his crucifixion as the climax of God's plan of salvation. 46:18.370 --> 46:22.830 He makes the Archetones responsible for his crucifixion. 46:23.010 --> 46:28.250 By so doing, Paul transformed the original belief in Jesus as the Messiah of Israel 46:28.250 --> 46:32.910 into an esoteric doctrine of a divine savior whose death had delivered mankind 46:32.910 --> 46:35.250 from their enslavement to the planetary powers. 46:35.250 --> 46:40.950 Thus the presentation of Jesus was intelligible to Graco-Roman society. 46:41.730 --> 46:46.050 In thus interpreting Christianity, Paul believed, as we have seen, 46:46.470 --> 46:50.670 that he was inspired by God for the salvation of the Gentiles, to whom the 46:50.670 --> 46:54.390 gospel to the circumcised was both unintelligible and offensive. 46:55.090 --> 46:58.310 When, however, the original Jewish Christians at Jerusalem realized the 46:58.310 --> 47:01.530 nature of Paul's teaching, they were shocked and vigorously repudiated it. 47:01.530 --> 47:04.090 They refused to recognize Paul as an apostle. 47:04.730 --> 47:07.250 He had never been an original disciple of Jesus. 47:07.810 --> 47:11.350 And they sent emissaries of Paul's converse to present their own gospel as 47:11.350 --> 47:12.790 the authentic version of faith. 47:14.010 --> 47:20.130 Church father Epiphanius, in his Panarion 30.16, points out that the Ebionites did 47:20.130 --> 47:23.130 not use wine when they observed the memorial of Yahshua's death. 47:23.750 --> 47:28.070 They have a baptism of initiation and each year they celebrate certain mysteries in 47:28.070 --> 47:30.090 imitation of the Church of the Christians. 47:30.090 --> 47:34.210 In these mysteries they use unleavened bread and, for the other part, 47:34.290 --> 47:34.910 pure water. 47:36.050 --> 47:39.450 Catholic Cardinal Gene Danilu, in his book, The Theology of the Jewish 47:39.450 --> 47:45.210 Christianity, on page 57, comments on the statement of Epiphanius, the reference to 47:45.210 --> 47:49.830 mysteries as evidently concerned with the Eucharist and one detail in particular 47:49.830 --> 47:51.910 should be noticed, the exclusion of the wine. 47:52.610 --> 47:57.610 Church father Epiphanius also testified that the Ebionites rejected the Jewish 47:57.610 --> 48:00.750 sacrificial cultists and that they were in fact vegetarian. 48:01.390 --> 48:05.270 He points out that the Ebionites rejected the biblical passages where it said that 48:05.270 --> 48:09.250 any holy patriarch and therefore true prophet of God ever offered a bloody 48:09.250 --> 48:11.210 sacrifice or ate the flesh of an animal. 48:12.330 --> 48:16.710 They do not accept the whole of the Pentateuch of Moses but suppress certain 48:16.710 --> 48:17.150 passages. 48:17.150 --> 48:21.210 If, in regards to eating of meat, you raise the objection that Abraham 48:21.210 --> 48:25.230 offered a calf to the angels, they say that they do not believe that. 48:27.830 --> 48:32.530 They do not accept the entire Pentateuch of Moses but suppress certain passages 48:32.530 --> 48:37.110 that Abraham, for example, offered a calf with milk to the angels or that Noah, 48:37.310 --> 48:40.090 Isaac, Jacob, or Moses made sacrifice. 48:42.210 --> 48:42.730 Rev. 48:43.650 --> 48:47.930 Finlay, in his book, The Apocryphal Gospels from History of Christianity in 48:47.930 --> 48:51.570 the Light of Modern Knowledge, says of the Ebionites, in practice they 48:51.570 --> 48:55.870 were vegetarians, looking with abhorrence on flesh as food and slaying of animals 48:55.870 --> 48:56.610 for sacrifice. 48:57.870 --> 49:02.490 In his book, Byways in Early Christian Literature, on page 38, Rev. 49:02.650 --> 49:07.430 Finlay says that the Ebionites had an abhorrence of all bloody sacrifices and 49:07.430 --> 49:08.190 the eating of flesh. 49:08.870 --> 49:14.390 The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Volume 1, on page 184, 49:14.830 --> 49:19.110 says of the Ebionites, they rejected the Old Testament sacrificial laws and were 49:19.110 --> 49:20.210 vegetarians. 49:20.930 --> 49:25.390 The Catholic Encyclopedia, Art Ebionites, on page 29, says of the Ebionites, 49:25.990 --> 49:30.370 devoted to a life of strictest poverty and community of goods, they practiced 49:30.370 --> 49:31.310 vegetarianism. 49:32.170 --> 49:35.650 From the above references, it is clear that the Ebionites rejected the 49:35.650 --> 49:39.430 sacrificial cultists and that they condemned those who killed animals for 49:39.430 --> 49:42.910 either sacrifice or in order to set a feast on their flesh. 49:44.090 --> 49:48.750 It is also apparent that they rejected the Christian view on soderiology and blood 49:48.750 --> 49:53.030 atonement and the use of wine as an emblem of Jesus' blood, since in their view the 49:53.030 --> 49:56.910 fall did not originate with Adam but rather with the watchers who corrupted all 49:56.910 --> 50:00.650 flesh and introduced men to sacrificial orgies and the eating of animal flesh. 50:01.350 --> 50:05.010 There was another major doctrinal difference between the Ebionites and the 50:05.010 --> 50:06.590 Paulinists or Catholic Christianity. 50:07.570 --> 50:11.170 The Church Fathers and later the Bishops of the Catholic Christianity discarded 50:11.170 --> 50:15.690 God's law and taught that Jesus abolished and abrogated the Mosaic laws altogether. 50:16.630 --> 50:20.190 They maintained that Jesus nailed God's law to the cross and therefore we are no 50:20.190 --> 50:21.890 longer obligated to observe it. 50:21.890 --> 50:25.590 In fact, the Catholic Christianity and even its offshoots, Protestant 50:25.590 --> 50:30.370 denominations, insist that those who obey God's law revealed to Moses on Sinai are 50:30.370 --> 50:31.970 legalists and in bondage. 50:33.250 --> 50:36.410 The Ebionites, however, maintain that every priesthood God originally revealed 50:36.410 --> 50:40.710 to Moses must be observed and that those who reject and nullify the commands 50:40.710 --> 50:44.610 revealed to Moses are apostates from the law and therefore are not and cannot be 50:44.610 --> 50:45.170 God's children. 50:45.650 --> 50:50.290 There seemed to be a contradiction in the Ebionites' stance towards the law of God. 50:50.430 --> 50:54.810 On one hand, they rejected many commands of the Jewish Pentateuch as uninspired and 50:54.810 --> 50:58.950 in fact of diabolical origin, while on the other they maintained that every single 50:58.950 --> 51:02.510 precept of God's law given on Sinai must not be abrogated or discarded. 51:03.650 --> 51:07.070 The contradiction altogether disappears when we realize that the Ebionites 51:07.070 --> 51:10.750 maintained that the law which God gave through Moses did not contain all the 51:10.750 --> 51:13.950 diabolical commands against which they so vigorously argued. 51:14.610 --> 51:17.950 They maintained that the law which God revealed to Moses was the same and 51:17.950 --> 51:21.810 identical spiritual and universal law which God originally gave through Adam, 51:22.310 --> 51:24.230 the true prophet for all humanity. 51:25.230 --> 51:29.670 The Ebionites insisted that neither God changes nor His perfect and universal law. 51:30.190 --> 51:33.570 As far as they were concerned, only the corrupted commands and forgeries 51:33.570 --> 51:36.230 in the Jewish Pentateuch must be rejected and discarded. 51:36.230 --> 51:40.790 All the true and original precepts which originates with God must be observed out 51:40.790 --> 51:44.790 of love and respect towards God and His will, revealed through His eternal and 51:44.790 --> 51:45.390 holy law. 51:46.190 --> 51:50.450 Christian historian Eusebius of the 4th century confirms the fact that the 51:50.450 --> 51:56.110 Ebionites of his day emphasized the so-called Mosaic law, insisting that those 51:56.110 --> 52:00.690 who reject it and therefore keep on transgressing God's law are apostates. 52:01.710 --> 52:07.970 With them, the observance of the law was altogether necessary, as if they could not 52:07.970 --> 52:11.290 be saved only by faith in Christ and a corresponding life. 52:11.810 --> 52:19.050 Church father Hippolytus wrote that the Ebionians assert that the world is made by 52:19.050 --> 52:19.690 the true God. 52:19.890 --> 52:22.630 They live, however, in all respects according to the law of Moses, 52:22.770 --> 52:24.530 alleging that they are thus justified. 52:24.530 --> 52:27.070 The Anti-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 52:27.190 --> 52:27.770 5, p. 52:28.370 --> 52:34.210 147 When Hippolytus says that the Ebionites lived in all respects according 52:34.210 --> 52:38.050 to the law of Moses, he does not mean that they offered sacrifices and killed animals 52:38.050 --> 52:39.270 in order to eat their flesh. 52:39.690 --> 52:43.270 Nor does he mean that they practiced slavery or did some other Mosaic practices 52:43.270 --> 52:45.350 which, in fact, they abhorred and condemned. 52:45.350 --> 52:50.110 He simply means that the Ebionites embraced the Mosaic law, all the commands 52:50.110 --> 52:54.390 which they believed and argued originated with God and are therefore binding on all 52:54.390 --> 52:54.890 humanity. 52:55.650 --> 52:58.730 The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Art. 52:58.830 --> 53:04.370 Ebionites, on pages 9-10, clearly explains Ebionite position towards the Mosaic law. 53:05.290 --> 53:09.970 Although strict observance of the law was enjoined, not all of the law of Moses was 53:09.970 --> 53:10.870 accepted as valid. 53:10.870 --> 53:15.230 They held that the true law had been adulterated by the addition of certain 53:15.230 --> 53:17.250 falsehoods post-Mosaic in origin. 53:18.450 --> 53:22.010 These had to be purged, because they contained doctrines that were actually 53:22.010 --> 53:24.670 inimicable of Moses' teachings. 53:25.590 --> 53:28.070 Apostle Peter, in Clementine Homilies, Hom. 53:28.150 --> 53:33.850 3, chapters 51-52, explains the Ebionite position on the law which is based on the 53:33.850 --> 53:35.190 teachings of Yahshua. 53:36.270 --> 53:40.870 And also that He, Yahshua, said, I am not come to destroy the law. 53:41.290 --> 53:45.790 And yet that He appeared to be destroying it is the part of one intimating that 53:45.790 --> 53:48.290 things which He destroyed did not belong to the law. 53:48.750 --> 53:53.450 And His saying, The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but one jot or one tittle 53:53.450 --> 53:58.050 shall not pass from the law, intimated that things which pass away before the 53:58.050 --> 54:01.330 heaven and the earth do not belong to the law in reality. 54:02.770 --> 54:07.770 Since then, while the heaven and the earth still stand, sacrifices have passed away, 54:08.610 --> 54:13.850 and kingdoms, and prophecies among those who are born of women, and such like as 54:13.850 --> 54:15.490 not being the ordinances of God. 54:16.770 --> 54:21.090 Peter clearly explains that Jesus believed in and in fact upheld the true law which 54:21.090 --> 54:25.530 Moses originally gave and insisted that His followers must obey every single 54:25.530 --> 54:28.570 command of that law, even those very least. 54:28.570 --> 54:34.970 Matthew 5, 17-20 Jesus only condemned and discarded the commands which did not 54:34.970 --> 54:38.650 originate with God His Father, but were rather of diabolical origin, 54:39.010 --> 54:40.830 written by the lying pen of the scribes. 54:40.990 --> 54:46.930 Jeremiah 8, 8 In Homily 8, chapter 10, Peter says of Adam and the original law 54:48.130 --> 54:52.550 But thus the matter stands, the only good God, having made all things well, 54:52.930 --> 54:57.570 and having handed them over to man, who was made after his image, he who has 54:57.570 --> 55:01.690 been made breathing of the divinity of him who made him, being a true prophet, 55:01.830 --> 55:05.570 and knowing all things, for the honor of the Father who had given all things to 55:05.570 --> 55:11.130 him, and for the salvation of the son born of him, as a genuine father preserving his 55:11.130 --> 55:15.050 affection towards the children born of him, and wishing them for their advantage 55:15.050 --> 55:16.630 to love God and be loved of him. 55:16.630 --> 55:20.990 Showing them the way which leads to his friendship, teaching them by which deeds 55:20.990 --> 55:26.330 of men the one God and Lord of all is pleased, and having exhibited to them the 55:26.330 --> 55:29.990 things that are pleasing to him, appointed a perpetual law to all, 55:30.130 --> 55:35.130 which neither can be abrogated by enemies, nor is vitiated by any impious one, 55:35.530 --> 55:38.870 nor is concealed in any place, but which can be read by all. 55:39.670 --> 55:44.410 The Ebionites maintain that the true and eternal law, with universal implications, 55:44.670 --> 55:46.130 was originally given through Adam. 55:46.730 --> 55:49.650 This law was generally observed by the first seven generations. 55:50.670 --> 55:54.230 In the days of Enoch, the fallen watchers introduced wicked and lewd practices, 55:54.510 --> 55:59.110 and they influenced the vast majority of humanity to follow in their steps. 55:59.770 --> 56:02.950 The true law was rejected and the whole earth was filled with violence. 56:03.510 --> 56:06.770 All flesh corrupted their original ordinances and began to kill each other 56:06.770 --> 56:07.510 and eat one another. 56:07.510 --> 56:11.430 Noah eventually restored the true and eternal law, which was later again 56:11.430 --> 56:11.910 rejected. 56:12.610 --> 56:16.090 Among Sinai, this true and universal law was once again restored through Moses. 56:16.410 --> 56:19.710 However, the law was rejected by the Jews and Israelites, and they walked in the 56:19.710 --> 56:20.450 ways of the pagans. 56:21.670 --> 56:26.850 Jesus finally came as the last and greatest prophet, the prophet promised in 56:26.850 --> 56:30.850 Deuteronomy 18, who once again restored the true and original spiritual law. 56:30.850 --> 56:34.790 This was the law which the Ebionites observed and maintained that all humans 56:34.790 --> 56:39.890 are obligated to obey, especially those who claimed to be the followers of Jesus. 56:40.450 --> 56:43.810 Paul was the one who rejected this law and claimed that Jesus abolished this law, 56:44.210 --> 56:45.810 and then he nailed it to his cross. 56:46.190 --> 56:50.330 He argued that salvation was now apart from the law and was possible only and 56:50.330 --> 56:52.650 solely through faith in Jesus and his atoning blood. 56:53.190 --> 56:56.470 This was the position of Catholic Christianity and virtually all Protestant 56:56.470 --> 56:57.050 Christians. 56:58.290 --> 57:03.290 I found this article on the Ebionites after I recorded the rest of this stuff, 57:03.330 --> 57:05.230 so I'm just going to read this off real quick. 57:05.830 --> 57:08.890 It's on a blog, religionshistory.blogspot .com. 57:09.330 --> 57:12.470 Of course, use your own discernment, you know, pray to not be deceived and 57:12.470 --> 57:12.770 everything. 57:13.830 --> 57:17.650 I'm just reading what I'm studying, and then there's a lot of links here, 57:17.790 --> 57:21.610 so I'll leave the link below to this page, and then you can click on all the links if 57:21.610 --> 57:22.690 you want to study more. 57:23.670 --> 57:25.770 First century Christian Ebionites. 57:26.070 --> 57:27.070 The original Christians? 57:27.910 --> 57:28.270 1. 57:28.530 --> 57:32.430 The Nazarenes The very first followers of Jesus were called the Nazarenes. 57:32.930 --> 57:37.410 This was a general name for the Jewish followers of Christ, but it is unknown to 57:37.410 --> 57:39.130 what extent they were actually Christian. 57:39.710 --> 57:44.090 They must have known and understood many aspects of Jesus, who spoke Aramaic like 57:44.090 --> 57:46.490 the Nazarenes, which are now lost and misunderstood. 57:47.210 --> 57:52.550 From 70 CE, cataclysmic events led to the Nazarenes being dispersed and broken, 57:52.890 --> 57:56.750 which led to their demise, except for a brief resurgence in the second century. 57:57.390 --> 58:01.990 They were eclipsed by Roman converts to Christ, by the Pauline Christians mostly. 58:02.690 --> 58:07.630 Many Gentiles already called the Nazarenes Christians, but we still know little about 58:07.630 --> 58:07.890 them. 58:08.470 --> 58:12.250 The Ebionites are more distinct and had one of the first Christian documents, 58:12.730 --> 58:13.490 the Gospel Matthew. 58:13.490 --> 58:18.710 All Christians were sometimes called Ebionites, although later Christians moved 58:18.710 --> 58:22.850 so far from their roots that they came to no longer recognize them. 58:23.530 --> 58:23.830 2. 58:23.950 --> 58:28.990 Ebionites Initially a sect of Judaism, Christianity first organized itself in 58:28.990 --> 58:29.310 Jerusalem. 58:29.750 --> 58:34.030 However, although Jewish Christianity was dominant at first, within 20 years it had 58:34.030 --> 58:36.790 moved out into the Gentile, non-Jewish world. 58:37.250 --> 58:40.110 Encyclopedia of New Religions, Christopher Partridge, 2004. 58:40.870 --> 58:41.930 2.1. 58:42.330 --> 58:46.090 The First Recognized Christians in Antiquity The first Christians were the 58:46.090 --> 58:48.250 Jews, who believed that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah. 58:48.730 --> 58:52.950 They used an early Gospel Matthew, and their beliefs are in accordance with 58:52.950 --> 58:57.010 the earliest reports of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, and with Jewish 58:57.010 --> 58:57.450 prophecy. 58:58.690 --> 59:03.930 The term Ebionite was first a common name for all Christians, as Epiphanius 59:03.930 --> 59:09.970 testifies, and it was used by the Christian bishop, Irenaeus of Lyons, 59:10.370 --> 59:14.010 Gaul, in the late 2nd century to designate a Jewish Christian sect. 59:14.670 --> 59:18.270 Although some later Christians thought that it came from a person called Ebion, 59:18.490 --> 59:20.490 this is not the correct root of the word. 59:20.970 --> 59:26.470 Ebionites may mean austere ones, but the origin of the term is obscure. 59:27.610 --> 59:28.270 2.2. 59:28.530 --> 59:33.170 Ebionite Beliefs The Ebionites justified all their beliefs by the example of Jesus 59:33.170 --> 59:33.670 himself. 59:33.670 --> 59:37.690 He was circumcised, observed the Sabbath, and celebrated the Jewish festivals, 59:38.070 --> 59:40.490 and taught that all the precepts of the law should be observed. 59:41.710 --> 59:45.530 The Ebionite Christians believed that Jesus was the Jewish Messiah sent from the 59:45.530 --> 59:48.970 Jewish God to the Jewish people, in fulfillment of the Jewish scriptures. 59:49.610 --> 59:53.890 They also believed that to belong to the people of God, one needed to be Jewish. 59:54.810 --> 59:58.910 As a result, they insisted on observing the Sabbath, keeping kosher, and 59:58.910 --> 01:00:00.110 circumcising all males. 01:00:00.110 --> 01:00:05.010 An early source, Irenaeus, also reports that the Ebionites continued reverence to 01:00:05.010 --> 01:00:09.070 Jerusalem, evidently by praying in its direction during their daily acts of 01:00:09.070 --> 01:00:09.330 worship. 01:00:10.410 --> 01:00:14.910 Their insistence on staying, or becoming, Jewish should not seem especially peculiar 01:00:14.910 --> 01:00:18.550 from a historical perspective since Jesus and his disciples were Jewish. 01:00:19.070 --> 01:00:22.650 But the Ebionites' Jewishness did not endear them to most other Christians, 01:00:23.010 --> 01:00:26.170 who believed that Jesus allowed them to bypass the requirements of the law for 01:00:26.170 --> 01:00:26.570 salvation. 01:00:26.570 --> 01:00:30.470 The Ebionites, however, maintained that their views were authorized by the 01:00:30.470 --> 01:00:34.370 original disciples, especially by Peter and Jesus' own brother, James, 01:00:34.710 --> 01:00:37.310 head of the Jerusalem church after the resurrection. 01:00:38.010 --> 01:00:41.110 Last Christianites, by Bart Ehrman, 2003. 01:00:42.330 --> 01:00:43.070 2.3. 01:00:43.670 --> 01:00:44.270 Adoptionism. 01:01:01.810 --> 01:01:05.150 The very first Christians, the Ebionites, Nazareans, Gnostic Christians, 01:01:05.270 --> 01:01:06.810 and others, were all Adoptionists. 01:01:07.350 --> 01:01:10.790 In accordance with the first hundred years of Christian belief and with the oldest 01:01:10.790 --> 01:01:15.130 manuscripts of the Bible, Jesus was born in a normal way, like the rest of us, 01:01:15.270 --> 01:01:18.810 to his parents, Joseph and Mary, from the line of David as prophesied. 01:01:19.550 --> 01:01:25.110 Jesus kept God's laws so well that on his baptism, God adopted him as his son and 01:01:25.110 --> 01:01:31.090 sent him to the cross as a truly innocent, perfect sacrifice to atone for the sins of 01:01:31.090 --> 01:01:34.110 all mankind to fulfill promises made in the Jewish scriptures. 01:01:35.390 --> 01:01:39.330 God signaled to the world that this sacrifice had been accepted by raising 01:01:39.330 --> 01:01:42.290 Jesus from the dead and raising him up directly into heaven. 01:01:42.290 --> 01:01:46.830 The doctrine of the virgin birth, so popular amongst Roman mystery religions 01:01:46.830 --> 01:01:50.310 and paganism at the time, was never accepted by Adoptionists. 01:01:50.950 --> 01:01:55.710 It was only hundreds of years later when the concept of the Trinity was codified by 01:01:55.710 --> 01:01:59.870 the Pauline Cappadocian Christians, the Adoptionist beliefs became condemned. 01:02:00.630 --> 01:02:03.730 Yet, it represented the truer and original form of Christian belief. 01:02:04.550 --> 01:02:08.170 The Crucifixion Facade, by Vexen Crabtree, 2002. 01:02:08.170 --> 01:02:12.910 In Pauline Christianity, Jesus died for rather mystical reasons. 01:02:13.410 --> 01:02:17.410 It does not make sense to state that Jesus died so that people could know Jesus as 01:02:17.410 --> 01:02:20.550 people such as Moses existed before Jesus died on the cross. 01:02:21.490 --> 01:02:25.590 Nor does it make sense to say that Jesus died so God could forgive or lower the 01:02:25.590 --> 01:02:26.310 wages of sin. 01:02:26.850 --> 01:02:29.410 God could do that whatever it pleased. 01:02:30.610 --> 01:02:33.450 Evianite Christianity did not suffer these problems. 01:02:34.170 --> 01:02:38.230 Animal sacrifices were made to God, but were never perfect. 01:02:38.770 --> 01:02:44.350 Only when finally a human who followed the law perfectly sacrificed himself was the 01:02:44.350 --> 01:02:48.310 ultimate sacrifice made, thus ending the need for routine animal sacrifices. 01:02:48.870 --> 01:02:53.010 This simple and old Christian belief makes a lot of sense, without managing to 01:02:53.010 --> 01:02:56.670 introduce further complexities or scriptural contradictions, whereas the 01:02:56.670 --> 01:03:00.350 Christianity we know today struggles to explain why Jesus was sacrificed at all. 01:03:00.350 --> 01:03:05.150 I'll link Scripture Thoroughly and Clearly Endorses Adoptionism, see the verses here. 01:03:06.750 --> 01:03:09.030 And there's a link, like I said, you can check those out. 01:03:09.610 --> 01:03:13.430 I find it interesting that the previous stuff that I read to you says that the 01:03:13.430 --> 01:03:17.450 Evianites did not believe that there should be any sacrifices, and yet this 01:03:17.450 --> 01:03:21.150 person is saying that the Evianites did believe in sacrifices, but until you 01:03:21.150 --> 01:03:26.710 sacrificed yourself, then the other sacrifices would be taken away. 01:03:27.650 --> 01:03:32.870 I also find it interesting that the Holy Spirit has led me to read the Bible and 01:03:32.870 --> 01:03:35.650 understand that we are supposed to be the living sacrifices. 01:03:35.970 --> 01:03:39.750 We are supposed to be following after Jesus' own footsteps and be living 01:03:39.750 --> 01:03:40.990 sacrifices every day. 01:03:41.330 --> 01:03:44.190 We sacrifice our fleshy will and do God's will instead. 01:03:44.830 --> 01:03:49.170 So, that actually falls in line with what this is saying about us being the 01:03:49.170 --> 01:03:51.390 sacrifices instead of animals being the sacrifices. 01:03:56.210 --> 01:03:56.930 Continuing on... 01:04:08.490 --> 01:04:08.850 So, 01:04:12.130 --> 01:04:12.950 then you can click on that. 01:04:32.290 --> 01:04:38.090 The Evianites repeatedly condemned Paul as his preachings gained support because of 01:04:38.090 --> 01:04:42.450 his denigration of Jewish law, and the Evianites considered all of his 01:04:42.450 --> 01:04:44.810 writings to be dangerous sources of sinful living. 01:04:45.350 --> 01:04:49.230 Indeed, for them, Paul was not just wrong about a few minor points. 01:04:49.230 --> 01:04:54.230 He was the archenemy, the heretic who had led so many astray by saying that you 01:04:54.230 --> 01:04:58.530 could be saved even without keeping the Jewish law, and who forbade circumcision. 01:04:59.710 --> 01:05:03.630 Other Christian groups arose who rejected the Jewish foundation of Christianity. 01:05:04.130 --> 01:05:07.750 Bart Ehrman and Lost Christianities provide the detailed description of the 01:05:07.750 --> 01:05:10.010 history of many early Christian groups. 01:05:10.650 --> 01:05:15.490 We know of Christian groups taking stands on Judaism that were at polar ends of the 01:05:15.490 --> 01:05:15.770 spectrum. 01:05:15.770 --> 01:05:20.510 Some groups insisting that the Jewish law was to be followed for salvation, 01:05:20.730 --> 01:05:23.890 and others insisting that the Jewish law could not be followed if one wanted 01:05:23.890 --> 01:05:24.310 salvation. 01:05:25.010 --> 01:05:28.310 All of these groups claim to be representing the views of Jesus himself. 01:05:28.550 --> 01:05:30.970 Lost Christianities by Bart Ehrman, 2008. 01:05:35.810 --> 01:05:40.110 The success and popularity of these groups caused the Evianites to be eclipsed, 01:05:40.250 --> 01:05:43.170 and the beginnings of the Pauline Christianity as we know it today 01:05:43.170 --> 01:05:43.590 flourished. 01:05:43.590 --> 01:05:47.850 This developing church and its founders largely forgot and rejected the Jewish 01:05:47.850 --> 01:05:48.810 roots of their religion. 01:05:49.310 --> 01:05:52.630 But curious Christians later wanted to know things that they did not know. 01:05:52.930 --> 01:05:54.370 For example, when was Jesus born? 01:05:54.790 --> 01:05:55.650 And when did he die? 01:05:56.110 --> 01:05:57.470 So they went in search of their past. 01:05:58.510 --> 01:06:05.330 Indeed, when in 160, Bishop Mobito of Sardis went to Judea to discover what had 01:06:05.330 --> 01:06:08.550 become of the legendary Jerusalem church, to his dismay, he found not the 01:06:08.550 --> 01:06:11.930 descendants of the apostles, but instead a small group of Christians who called 01:06:11.930 --> 01:06:17.170 themselves the Evianites, or poor men, who had their own gospel of the Evianites, 01:06:17.250 --> 01:06:20.250 and also a gospel of the Hebrews, a gospel of the Twelve Apostles, 01:06:20.430 --> 01:06:21.730 and a gospel of the Nazarene. 01:06:22.210 --> 01:06:25.530 All of these gospels differed significantly from the gospels of the New 01:06:25.530 --> 01:06:25.870 Testament. 01:06:26.430 --> 01:06:30.030 The Jewish Mysteries by Timothy Freak and Peter Gandy, 1999. 01:06:30.030 --> 01:06:35.270 This is not the only time that church elders went in search of their history 01:06:35.270 --> 01:06:38.650 only to discover that what they found was not what they expected. 01:06:39.310 --> 01:06:43.510 They did not realize that over time their religion had changed, the same as with all 01:06:43.510 --> 01:06:45.330 other religious groups in history. 01:06:45.810 --> 01:06:48.870 They discovered that the beliefs of the early Evianite Christians differed from 01:06:48.870 --> 01:06:51.350 those of their own developing church. 01:06:52.590 --> 01:06:53.070 3. 01:06:53.250 --> 01:06:58.170 The Gospel of Matthew About the Gospel of Matthew on holybooks.info, there is a 01:06:58.170 --> 01:06:58.350 link. 01:06:59.170 --> 01:07:02.230 The Gospel of Matthew became the first book of the New Testament. 01:07:02.770 --> 01:07:04.470 Here are some important facts about it. 01:07:04.970 --> 01:07:05.910 Time of Authorship. 01:07:06.130 --> 01:07:10.430 The Gospel of Matthew was written about the fall of the Jewish Temple in 70 CE in 01:07:10.430 --> 01:07:14.330 Syria, probably at around the same time as the Gospel of Luke was written, 01:07:14.730 --> 01:07:16.570 as they were unaware of each other's writings. 01:07:17.250 --> 01:07:22.030 And almost definitely written before 100 CE, the first two chapters of Matthew, 01:07:22.110 --> 01:07:26.470 the virgin birth and the genealogy, were not contained in the first version of 01:07:26.470 --> 01:07:28.510 Matthew's Gospel and were added at a later date. 01:07:29.810 --> 01:07:30.510 A copy of Mark. 01:07:30.830 --> 01:07:33.910 Matthew's Gospel contains 92% of the text of Mark. 01:07:34.450 --> 01:07:37.890 This is almost a copy, but Matthew corrected many of Mark's blunders about 01:07:37.890 --> 01:07:38.850 Jewish ways of life. 01:07:39.230 --> 01:07:39.970 There is a link there. 01:07:40.430 --> 01:07:44.430 And proceeded a few versions later to add the chapters about the virgin birth. 01:07:45.250 --> 01:07:50.470 Matthew also uses a source that historians call Q, a completely unidentified source 01:07:50.470 --> 01:07:54.850 who was supposedly an original disciple of Christ or a friend of Paul, none of whose 01:07:54.850 --> 01:07:59.430 work has survived, but which was quoted, copied, used by Matthew and Luke. 01:08:00.730 --> 01:08:01.250 Anonymous. 01:08:01.730 --> 01:08:06.250 It was not until about 150 CE that the author of Matthew was assigned to the 01:08:06.250 --> 01:08:06.570 writing. 01:08:06.570 --> 01:08:13.130 In traditional pseudo-pyrographic fashion, the author was based on a historic 01:08:13.130 --> 01:08:18.590 character, in this case on Matai, a disciple of Yaishu ben Tanfira, 01:08:19.150 --> 01:08:24.610 who lived in Hashemonian times, and whose story has many similarities to 01:08:24.610 --> 01:08:25.390 that of Jesus. 01:08:25.670 --> 01:08:27.430 See the link there if you want to. 01:08:28.150 --> 01:08:29.990 Not written by an eyewitness of Jesus. 01:08:30.130 --> 01:08:32.270 We know this because it is a copy of Mark. 01:08:32.270 --> 01:08:37.410 No eyewitness of such an important person would have needed or wanted to simply copy 01:08:37.410 --> 01:08:38.790 someone else's memories about him. 01:08:39.850 --> 01:08:42.730 Matthew staked his writing career on the fact that Jesus was a great man, 01:08:43.170 --> 01:08:44.330 divine, and a messiah. 01:08:44.790 --> 01:08:47.410 He set out in his writings to prove that Jesus was all these things. 01:08:47.870 --> 01:08:50.650 The first two chapters of Matthew, the virgin birth and genealogy, 01:08:50.810 --> 01:08:57.370 were not contained in the first version of Matthew's gospel, but were added later by 01:08:57.370 --> 01:08:58.130 an unknown editor. 01:08:58.130 --> 01:09:01.530 The Ebionites had a very early version of the gospel of Matthew. 01:09:02.270 --> 01:09:06.690 There were many versions and editions of the gospels in the early years of 01:09:06.690 --> 01:09:07.110 Christianity. 01:09:07.810 --> 01:09:11.930 The Ebionites, being such an early group of Christians, had access to the earlier, 01:09:12.130 --> 01:09:13.370 less edited version of Matthew. 01:09:15.030 --> 01:09:19.510 Their own version of Matthew, however, may have been a translation of the text 01:09:19.510 --> 01:09:20.310 into Aramaic. 01:09:20.730 --> 01:09:24.290 Jesus himself spoke Aramaic in Palestine, as did his earliest followers. 01:09:24.290 --> 01:09:28.170 So it makes sense that a group of Jewish followers of Jesus that originated in 01:09:28.170 --> 01:09:31.810 Palestine would continue to cite his words and stories about him in his native 01:09:31.810 --> 01:09:32.150 tongue. 01:09:32.690 --> 01:09:36.690 It appears likely that this Aramaic Matthew was somewhat different from the 01:09:36.690 --> 01:09:37.810 Matthew now in the canon. 01:09:38.270 --> 01:09:42.330 In particular, the Matthew used by Ebionite Christians would have lacked the 01:09:42.330 --> 01:09:46.250 first two chapters which narrate Jesus' birth to a virgin, a notion that the 01:09:46.250 --> 01:09:47.450 Ebionite Christians rejected. 01:09:47.450 --> 01:09:52.390 There were doubtless other differences from our own version of Matthew's gospel 01:09:52.390 --> 01:09:52.710 as well. 01:09:52.790 --> 01:09:55.150 Lost Christianity by Bart Forman, 2003. 01:09:56.270 --> 01:09:56.910 Number four. 01:09:57.410 --> 01:10:00.830 Pauline Christians edited the gospels to make the Ebionites look wrong. 01:10:01.390 --> 01:10:05.570 Early scribes were not beyond editing the text in order to prove their own views or 01:10:05.570 --> 01:10:06.830 to disprove the views of others. 01:10:07.210 --> 01:10:10.910 When the later Pauline Christians went in search of their own history and discovered 01:10:10.910 --> 01:10:14.270 the Ebionites, they found that their Jewish and Adoptionist beliefs were 01:10:14.270 --> 01:10:15.150 different than their own. 01:10:15.150 --> 01:10:18.690 They could not accept that they were the ones who had deviated from the truth. 01:10:19.190 --> 01:10:22.290 So, first they set out to discredit and disprove the Ebionites in literature. 01:10:22.830 --> 01:10:24.830 Secondly, they burnt all the Ebionites' books. 01:10:25.710 --> 01:10:27.190 Luke was edited in three places. 01:10:27.710 --> 01:10:32.910 Luke 2.33 and Luke 2.48 both contain verses that state that Joseph was Jesus' 01:10:33.090 --> 01:10:33.410 father. 01:10:33.970 --> 01:10:36.730 At least, that is what is said in the older manuscripts. 01:10:37.410 --> 01:10:41.210 Verses such as Luke 2.33 supported Ebionite Christians' belief in 01:10:41.210 --> 01:10:41.810 Adoptionism. 01:10:42.770 --> 01:10:48.110 Strangely, in some later manuscripts, Luke 2.33 and Luke 2.48 both had the word 01:10:48.110 --> 01:10:52.450 Father edited out, although over half of our Bibles today have thankfully reverted 01:10:52.450 --> 01:10:53.410 to the original version. 01:10:54.070 --> 01:11:00.150 Luke 3.22, where God clearly says that He is adopting Jesus, was also edited so that 01:11:00.150 --> 01:11:01.050 it did not say so. 01:11:01.730 --> 01:11:05.530 This is one proto-Orthodox alteration that proved remarkably successful. 01:11:06.010 --> 01:11:09.450 Even though the potentially dangerous, heretical form of the text is found in 01:11:09.450 --> 01:11:13.690 virtually all of our oldest witnesses, it is the altered form of the text that is 01:11:13.690 --> 01:11:17.190 found in the majority of surviving manuscripts and reproduced in most of our 01:11:17.190 --> 01:11:18.010 English translations. 01:11:18.970 --> 01:11:20.630 There are a couple of links here. 01:11:21.310 --> 01:11:28.210 Later editors mistranslated Isaiah 7.14 in the Septuagint and handily turned the 01:11:28.210 --> 01:11:32.090 prophecy that a young woman would have a child to a prophecy that a virgin would 01:11:32.090 --> 01:11:32.590 have a child. 01:11:32.890 --> 01:11:35.930 This was used heavily in the debate against the Ebionites and other 01:11:35.930 --> 01:11:37.150 Adoptionists by later Christians. 01:11:38.010 --> 01:11:38.310 5. 01:11:38.950 --> 01:11:43.330 Conclusion and the Demise of the Ebionites The Ebionites were some of the original 01:11:43.330 --> 01:11:45.950 Christians, Jews who believed that Jesus was Messiah. 01:11:46.410 --> 01:11:48.650 They populated the legendary Jerusalem church. 01:11:48.990 --> 01:11:51.990 Ebionite was sometimes used as a term to describe all Christians. 01:11:52.850 --> 01:11:56.470 Those who we now know of as Pauline Christians opposed the Ebionites, 01:11:56.590 --> 01:11:59.430 after discovering them and realizing that their beliefs differed. 01:11:59.770 --> 01:12:03.650 Authors such as Tertullian or Ginnida Alexandria and many other intolerant 01:12:03.650 --> 01:12:06.130 heresy hunters wrote at great length against the Ebionites. 01:12:06.130 --> 01:12:09.750 Many of the claims made against them were based on misunderstandings of their 01:12:09.750 --> 01:12:12.930 beliefs, and many anti-Ebionite claims were plainly ridiculous. 01:12:13.550 --> 01:12:16.530 Pauline Christians eradicated the Ebionites, burning all of their books, 01:12:16.790 --> 01:12:20.370 none survived, and harassing and arresting the people until none were left. 01:12:20.770 --> 01:12:25.310 They edited Luke 2.33 and Luke 2.48 where Joseph was twice called the father of 01:12:25.310 --> 01:12:29.550 Jesus so that it did not say so, and they also edited Luke 3.22 where it 01:12:29.550 --> 01:12:33.010 plainly stated in accordance with Ebionite beliefs that God adopted Jesus. 01:12:33.010 --> 01:12:37.770 Pauline Christians, as non-Jewish Romans, handily came across a mistranslated 01:12:37.770 --> 01:12:41.950 prophecy that said Jesus would be born of a virgin, like other Roman sons of God, 01:12:42.310 --> 01:12:45.350 adding a whole two chapters to the beginning of Matthew to prove their point. 01:12:45.790 --> 01:12:49.790 These edits, when they were uncovered, have shown that the Ebionites were treated 01:12:49.790 --> 01:12:54.150 very cruelly and unfairly, and that the original readings of Matthew and Luke both 01:12:54.150 --> 01:12:58.610 support Ebionite Christianity, rather than the Pauline Christianity that 01:12:58.610 --> 01:12:59.570 the West has inherited. 01:13:00.130 --> 01:13:04.070 If we were to guess which group was the more austere, holy and godly, we would 01:13:04.070 --> 01:13:07.090 have to guess it was the Ebionites rather than the Pauline Christians, who 01:13:07.090 --> 01:13:08.930 slaughtered, slandered, and oppressed them. 01:13:09.410 --> 01:13:12.630 Unfortunately, the victors get to write history, and it is Pauline Christianity 01:13:12.630 --> 01:13:14.730 that became the legacy of the Roman Empire. 01:13:15.190 --> 01:13:17.710 After the 4th century, the Ebionites were vanquished. 01:13:19.190 --> 01:13:23.530 I'm now going to play a video, this is a mirror of somebody else's video, 01:13:23.790 --> 01:13:26.810 and I'll leave the link below. 01:13:27.410 --> 01:13:28.510 Nazarene Acts playlist. 01:13:28.770 --> 01:13:32.750 That's where you can find everything that he's going to get into, because at the end 01:13:32.750 --> 01:13:35.530 of this video, then he's going to get into the next videos. 01:13:35.830 --> 01:13:39.690 And if you're as interested as I am, then you might want to check it out. 01:13:40.330 --> 01:13:43.930 So I put them all in a playlist, and like I said, the link will be below. 01:13:44.710 --> 01:13:48.310 The channel is David H. 01:13:50.050 --> 01:13:50.530 Natsari. 01:13:51.670 --> 01:13:54.370 Sorry if I didn't pronounce the name very well. 01:13:55.050 --> 01:13:59.490 But the link will be below, like I said, and you can check out his channel and that 01:13:59.490 --> 01:13:59.870 playlist. 01:14:02.210 --> 01:14:05.490 And he discusses the Nazarene Acts. 01:14:05.830 --> 01:14:06.670 It's a book. 01:14:07.190 --> 01:14:10.030 And if you guys want to check out the book, the link will be below. 01:14:11.430 --> 01:14:12.870 There's a PDF for it. 01:14:13.370 --> 01:14:20.250 And on that webpage, there's also a book of Enoch and another book, which I haven't 01:14:20.250 --> 01:14:21.270 looked at any of these things. 01:14:23.050 --> 01:14:29.970 So anyway, I put together the playlist from this channel, and I haven't watched 01:14:29.970 --> 01:14:31.070 everything, obviously. 01:14:32.350 --> 01:14:35.630 I just put it together because I watched the first video, which is the 01:14:35.630 --> 01:14:39.410 introduction, and then I wanted to watch the next video, so I put it in a playlist. 01:14:39.410 --> 01:14:40.890 I didn't realize how many there were. 01:14:41.050 --> 01:14:41.510 There's a lot. 01:14:43.310 --> 01:14:46.570 And I clicked on one random video, so I did watch one of the videos in the 01:14:46.570 --> 01:14:50.170 playlist concerning the virgin birth. 01:14:50.830 --> 01:14:54.950 He says, the Ebionites did not believe in the virgin birth, but the Nazarenes did 01:14:54.950 --> 01:14:56.310 believe in the virgin birth. 01:14:58.230 --> 01:15:01.010 So anyway, he does give some commentary on things. 01:15:01.250 --> 01:15:03.590 I don't know what he's going to say in all the videos. 01:15:03.690 --> 01:15:04.690 I mean, I haven't watched them. 01:15:04.690 --> 01:15:09.190 I'm just doing this to study, and I hope that you guys also study to show 01:15:09.190 --> 01:15:10.490 yourselves approved to God. 01:15:11.050 --> 01:15:15.590 We are supposed to test everything and hold fast to what is true. 01:15:16.650 --> 01:15:21.730 And basically, I'm just being led to study, study, study, like I studied the 01:15:21.730 --> 01:15:22.630 Trinity last year. 01:15:23.190 --> 01:15:27.950 So I'm just kind of in that pattern right now of studying, and so I can't be firm on 01:15:27.950 --> 01:15:29.470 what I know and what I don't know. 01:15:29.470 --> 01:15:35.170 I just find it interesting that this past year, I was led to vegetarianism. 01:15:35.450 --> 01:15:39.090 I was led to following the law, the Moses law. 01:15:40.110 --> 01:15:45.230 I know the Bible says that in the end times, we're going to remember ye the law 01:15:45.230 --> 01:15:45.690 of Moses. 01:15:48.470 --> 01:15:51.810 So I just think it's interesting, some of the stuff that lines up. 01:15:53.150 --> 01:15:56.710 Obviously, I was led to find out Jesus wasn't God, because I always believed he 01:15:56.710 --> 01:15:58.470 was before this past year. 01:15:58.810 --> 01:16:02.710 So I just find it interesting. 01:16:04.770 --> 01:16:07.270 I'm going to spend some time, I think, watching the playlist. 01:16:09.170 --> 01:16:11.810 You can also check out the PDF, like I said, it's free. 01:16:12.850 --> 01:16:14.970 So if you want to check that out, you can. 01:16:16.670 --> 01:16:17.310 Shalom. 01:16:17.770 --> 01:16:22.170 Today we're going to be talking about a document known as the Recognitions of 01:16:22.170 --> 01:16:22.490 Clement. 01:16:23.370 --> 01:16:30.610 It's also gone by the name of the Nazarene Acts of the Apostles, or the Teachings of 01:16:30.610 --> 01:16:30.950 Peter. 01:16:31.590 --> 01:16:34.470 I've also seen it referred to as the Travels of Peter. 01:16:36.370 --> 01:16:39.290 So, I'm going to start off by asking a question. 01:16:39.390 --> 01:16:42.290 Have you ever wondered this question? 01:16:43.750 --> 01:16:45.470 What about the twelve apostles? 01:16:46.130 --> 01:16:47.370 What happened to them? 01:16:48.210 --> 01:16:50.030 Why don't we know anything about them, really? 01:16:50.470 --> 01:16:56.450 We have apostle lists in the New Testament, in the Gospels, that tell us 01:16:56.450 --> 01:17:00.670 how Yeshua personally hand-picked his apostles. 01:17:00.910 --> 01:17:05.930 He went throughout the countryside of Judea and Galilee, and he found these 01:17:05.930 --> 01:17:11.650 particular men that he picked out to be his apostles, his sent ones. 01:17:11.650 --> 01:17:17.750 And they were to go out and teach his doctrine and his gospel to the nations. 01:17:18.450 --> 01:17:20.930 But we don't know a whole lot about them. 01:17:22.270 --> 01:17:23.810 We know a lot about Paul. 01:17:24.450 --> 01:17:26.210 We've got a bunch of letters from Paul. 01:17:26.530 --> 01:17:27.450 Very long letters. 01:17:28.990 --> 01:17:32.760 But the only thing we have from the actual twelve is... 01:17:33.730 --> 01:17:37.450 We've got some very short epistles from John. 01:17:38.250 --> 01:17:40.210 We've got one epistle from James. 01:17:40.850 --> 01:17:47.430 We've got two from Peter, although 2 Peter is widely regarded not to have been 01:17:47.430 --> 01:17:48.170 written by Peter. 01:17:48.790 --> 01:17:53.330 And that belief goes back as far as the 200's AD. 01:17:53.890 --> 01:17:59.630 So it's not a new doctrine or anything that atheist scholars have come up with. 01:17:59.650 --> 01:18:03.650 It's something that the church was saying 1,800 years ago. 01:18:04.010 --> 01:18:05.970 That 2 Peter was not genuine. 01:18:07.090 --> 01:18:10.250 We have the book of Revelation which is written by John. 01:18:10.550 --> 01:18:13.050 But for the most part we don't have a whole lot. 01:18:14.230 --> 01:18:15.550 We don't know much about them. 01:18:16.870 --> 01:18:23.690 We don't really know where they went aside from some Catholic histories that may or 01:18:23.690 --> 01:18:24.430 may not be true. 01:18:25.850 --> 01:18:29.970 But when it comes to really understanding their doctrine and what did Yeshua... 01:18:30.750 --> 01:18:33.770 What was the message that Yeshua gave them to preach? 01:18:34.850 --> 01:18:36.670 All we really have is Paul. 01:18:38.670 --> 01:18:41.070 So, why don't we know much about them? 01:18:42.170 --> 01:18:47.590 Well, for one reason, the original followers of Yeshua were not Christian. 01:18:48.890 --> 01:18:51.550 They were, some people say, Jewish. 01:18:51.970 --> 01:18:57.930 Although, what exactly Jewish means today is much different than what Jewish may 01:18:57.930 --> 01:19:00.670 have meant 2,000 years ago. 01:19:01.510 --> 01:19:04.670 They were Hebraic, certainly. 01:19:05.590 --> 01:19:06.890 They kept the Torah. 01:19:07.050 --> 01:19:08.730 They kept the commandments of Elohim. 01:19:09.650 --> 01:19:11.690 And they had the testimony of Yeshua. 01:19:13.610 --> 01:19:17.050 But the church, the church itself, rejects the Torah. 01:19:17.970 --> 01:19:19.990 Now, they do keep the testimony of Yeshua. 01:19:21.090 --> 01:19:26.050 However, they teach that his testimony had to do in a way with the law and freeing us 01:19:26.050 --> 01:19:28.690 from the burden of Yeshua's father's commandments. 01:19:30.010 --> 01:19:33.810 But, that wasn't the doctrine that was taught by the original followers of 01:19:33.810 --> 01:19:34.130 Yeshua. 01:19:35.430 --> 01:19:37.030 So, what name did they go by? 01:19:38.710 --> 01:19:43.530 Well, most people in the Hebraic Roots Movement knows that they went by the title 01:19:43.530 --> 01:19:44.670 of the Nazarenes. 01:19:47.310 --> 01:19:52.470 But that's not the only cognomen that they answer to. 01:19:53.330 --> 01:19:57.630 They were known as followers of the Way. 01:19:59.370 --> 01:20:02.270 They called themselves the Sons of Light. 01:20:03.730 --> 01:20:07.450 They saw themselves as the Sons of Righteousness. 01:20:09.090 --> 01:20:14.230 Incidentally, many of the same titles that the earliest followers of Yeshua went by 01:20:14.230 --> 01:20:19.490 is also the same titles that the group that wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls called 01:20:19.490 --> 01:20:20.070 themselves. 01:20:21.010 --> 01:20:23.230 And I believe there's a reason for that. 01:20:24.690 --> 01:20:28.330 Because the scrolls themselves, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the secretarian 01:20:28.330 --> 01:20:34.470 works contained there, were most likely written by the original apostles and their 01:20:34.470 --> 01:20:35.810 immediate disciples. 01:20:36.650 --> 01:20:40.670 There's a teacher of righteousness that's mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls. 01:20:41.150 --> 01:20:44.090 And there's lots of theories as to who exactly he is. 01:20:44.090 --> 01:20:50.730 But there's only one person in history that they absolutely fit perfectly based 01:20:50.730 --> 01:20:53.090 upon all the information we know about this person. 01:20:53.850 --> 01:20:56.510 And that person is James, the brother of Yeshua. 01:20:57.990 --> 01:21:03.870 And it's highly likely that the teacher of righteousness was, in fact, the brother of 01:21:03.870 --> 01:21:04.310 the Master. 01:21:05.510 --> 01:21:07.730 So why don't we know more about these twelve apostles? 01:21:08.050 --> 01:21:09.330 What other names do they go by? 01:21:10.390 --> 01:21:13.290 Well, the one I want to focus on today is the Ebionites. 01:21:13.290 --> 01:21:16.730 Or, in English, it would be the poor. 01:21:18.130 --> 01:21:20.690 Ebionim being the Hebrew word for poor. 01:21:21.530 --> 01:21:25.090 The Ebionites, we don't know a whole lot about them. 01:21:25.990 --> 01:21:30.350 Most of the information that we have comes from heresiologists. 01:21:30.830 --> 01:21:38.690 They were men that wrote against the groups that believed in Yeshua who were 01:21:38.690 --> 01:21:39.770 not part of the church. 01:21:40.610 --> 01:21:45.090 So basically, for instance, we've got a lot of information about the Ebionites 01:21:45.090 --> 01:21:51.230 from a church historian known as Epiphanius in his work, the Panarion. 01:21:52.290 --> 01:21:58.290 Now, keep in mind, Epiphanius was a... essentially, he was a company man. 01:21:58.790 --> 01:22:04.750 He was a Catholic, or at least he was a member of the church that eventually 01:22:04.750 --> 01:22:06.690 evolved into the Catholic Church. 01:22:06.690 --> 01:22:14.590 The purpose of his writing was not necessarily to teach truth so much as it 01:22:14.590 --> 01:22:16.690 was to protect the orthodoxy. 01:22:17.770 --> 01:22:23.410 And so, in his writings, anything that does not fit with the official church line 01:22:23.410 --> 01:22:27.250 or the official church doctrine, in his mind, is a heresy. 01:22:27.970 --> 01:22:30.090 So, I'm going to read through some of his quotes. 01:22:30.270 --> 01:22:34.170 He has an extensive chapter on the Ebionites in his book. 01:22:34.170 --> 01:22:37.490 But I'm just going to go over a few key pieces of information. 01:22:38.190 --> 01:22:42.030 Mostly because if we go through too much of this information, it's hard to really 01:22:42.030 --> 01:22:44.850 understand what he's writing about. 01:22:44.970 --> 01:22:49.850 Because in his writings, he is trying so hard to demonize this group. 01:22:50.510 --> 01:22:52.250 But he makes several key admissions. 01:22:53.430 --> 01:22:56.990 Now, you'll notice here, this is the beginning of chapter 30 of the Panarion. 01:22:58.330 --> 01:23:00.370 Chapter 29 was about the Nazarenes. 01:23:01.070 --> 01:23:04.670 So, he's flowing right into the Ebionites. 01:23:04.830 --> 01:23:09.390 And he says at the beginning of the chapter, Following these, which is the 01:23:09.390 --> 01:23:14.390 Nazarenes, and holding views like theirs, Ebion, the founder of the Ebionites, 01:23:14.550 --> 01:23:19.170 arose in the world in his turn as a monstrosity with many forms, and 01:23:19.170 --> 01:23:23.730 practically represented on himself the snake-like form of the mythical 01:23:23.730 --> 01:23:25.230 many-headed Hydra. 01:23:25.230 --> 01:23:30.270 He was of the Nazarene school, but preached and taught other things than 01:23:30.270 --> 01:23:30.510 they. 01:23:30.870 --> 01:23:39.010 So, right away you see the tone of his letter, or his book, is completely against 01:23:39.010 --> 01:23:40.190 the Ebionites. 01:23:40.490 --> 01:23:48.950 He calls this person, their founder Ebion, a snake like a many-headed Hydra. 01:23:49.550 --> 01:23:51.870 Now, in reality, there was no Ebion. 01:23:52.550 --> 01:23:56.970 The Ebionites are not named after a man named Ebion. 01:23:58.150 --> 01:24:04.150 But, for whatever reason, Epiphanius is asserting that they are. 01:24:04.690 --> 01:24:06.790 And he is attacking this person, Ebion. 01:24:07.470 --> 01:24:13.390 However, as we go on, you'll see that he admits who the Ebionites say founded them. 01:24:14.110 --> 01:24:15.610 And it's very revealing. 01:24:16.670 --> 01:24:19.110 So, we'll jump down a couple of paragraphs. 01:24:19.110 --> 01:24:20.670 And he says, 01:24:38.310 --> 01:24:40.510 Okay, so what does this mean? 01:24:40.870 --> 01:24:47.410 Well, every time that you read a historical reference to James, 01:24:47.410 --> 01:24:58.790 whether it's Hegasypis, or Epiphanius, or Eusebius, Hippolytus, there's this 01:24:58.790 --> 01:25:01.490 association with James and the poor. 01:25:02.230 --> 01:25:09.670 Now, using translations, they pick and choose how they're going to translate this 01:25:09.670 --> 01:25:13.510 word, the poor, because they want to disassociate James with the Ebionites. 01:25:14.910 --> 01:25:21.410 So, when they say that in their writings, they, of course, translate the word 01:25:21.410 --> 01:25:27.550 Ebionim into Greek, so it shows up as the poor, not the Ebionim. 01:25:28.110 --> 01:25:29.150 Same thing with English. 01:25:29.250 --> 01:25:33.670 They translate it into English as the poor, rather than leaving it as the 01:25:33.670 --> 01:25:34.330 Ebionites. 01:25:35.190 --> 01:25:37.810 Because they don't want to associate James with this group. 01:25:38.990 --> 01:25:45.830 However, here you can see this admission by Epiphanius that the Ebionites were very 01:25:45.830 --> 01:25:47.410 much associated with James. 01:25:47.990 --> 01:25:53.510 So, James, according to several historical references we have, was a lifelong virgin. 01:25:56.070 --> 01:26:04.130 And, originally, the Ebionites practiced celibacy, but once they moved out of 01:26:04.130 --> 01:26:10.390 Jerusalem, they actually forbid celibacy, because they realized that if they did not 01:26:10.390 --> 01:26:13.890 have children, then their movement was eventually going to die out. 01:26:14.990 --> 01:26:17.050 So, we'll go on to the next reference. 01:26:18.770 --> 01:26:23.530 He says that their origin, the Ebionites' origin, came after the fall of Jerusalem, 01:26:24.170 --> 01:26:28.410 for since practically all who had come to faith in Christ had settled in Perea, 01:26:28.770 --> 01:26:30.990 then in Pella, a town in the Decapolis. 01:26:30.990 --> 01:26:38.210 The Gospel mentions, which is near Botania and Bishantas, as they have moved there 01:26:38.210 --> 01:26:39.170 and were living there. 01:26:39.330 --> 01:26:42.050 Now, this is a very well-known event. 01:26:42.610 --> 01:26:49.210 Just prior to the destruction of Jerusalem, in or around 66 Common Era, 01:26:50.550 --> 01:26:57.270 the early church, we'll call them church, the early assembly in Jerusalem were 01:26:57.270 --> 01:27:00.870 warned by a prophet to flee the city. 01:27:00.870 --> 01:27:06.370 And so, at their first opportunity, they left the city of Jerusalem, 01:27:06.670 --> 01:27:09.150 because they knew it was about to be destroyed. 01:27:09.750 --> 01:27:11.070 And they went to Pella. 01:27:11.430 --> 01:27:16.490 So, if you were to go to Google and type in the flight to Pella, you'll get all 01:27:16.490 --> 01:27:17.630 kinds of information about this. 01:27:17.690 --> 01:27:24.790 This is a well-known historical event, that the original followers of Yeshua fled 01:27:24.790 --> 01:27:27.290 to Pella before the destruction of Jerusalem. 01:27:28.410 --> 01:27:35.570 Now, notice that he's admitting that the Ebionites originated out of Pella, 01:27:35.970 --> 01:27:41.470 which was the same area where the original apostles went to. 01:27:43.710 --> 01:27:48.790 Moving on, he says, they too accept the Gospel according to Matthew, like the 01:27:48.790 --> 01:27:51.600 Corinthians and the Morinthians. 01:27:52.050 --> 01:27:53.470 They too use it alone. 01:27:54.110 --> 01:27:55.750 They call it according to the Hebrews. 01:27:55.750 --> 01:27:59.930 And it is true to say that Matthew expounded and preached the Gospel in the 01:27:59.930 --> 01:28:02.570 Hebrew language, and Alphabet in the New Testament. 01:28:02.730 --> 01:28:06.370 So, okay, this is a bit of a legendary book. 01:28:06.710 --> 01:28:08.490 The Gospel according to the Hebrews. 01:28:09.310 --> 01:28:11.770 We've got several references to it. 01:28:12.230 --> 01:28:14.150 Jerome quotes out of it. 01:28:15.150 --> 01:28:17.790 Supposedly, he even translated it into Latin. 01:28:18.570 --> 01:28:23.590 It's also mentioned by Origen, and several other historians. 01:28:23.590 --> 01:28:25.070 I mean, it's a well-known book. 01:28:25.130 --> 01:28:26.350 However, it's been lost. 01:28:29.310 --> 01:28:32.250 Or some may say it was destroyed by the church. 01:28:32.630 --> 01:28:39.590 But what this was, it was a Hebrew Gospel, very similar to the Gospel of Matthew. 01:28:40.690 --> 01:28:45.490 In fact, many people who look into the Gospel according to the Hebrews believe it 01:28:45.490 --> 01:28:47.550 to be the original Gospel. 01:28:48.050 --> 01:28:50.950 And that it was translated into Greek. 01:28:53.790 --> 01:28:58.030 And somewhat changed, and that became what we know as the Gospel of Matthew. 01:28:59.490 --> 01:29:04.570 So, here's an admission that the Ebionites used the Gospel according to the Hebrews. 01:29:05.150 --> 01:29:11.170 Which is widely regarded to be the original, very first of the Synoptic 01:29:11.170 --> 01:29:11.710 Gospels. 01:29:14.590 --> 01:29:17.270 And he says, but they used certain other books as well. 01:29:17.510 --> 01:29:20.790 Supposedly, the so-called Travels of Peter, written by Clement. 01:29:20.790 --> 01:29:24.470 Though they corrupt the contents while leaving a few genuine passages. 01:29:24.670 --> 01:29:29.710 So, here you see that this is the book that we're going to be studying in this 01:29:29.710 --> 01:29:36.170 series of studies I'm going to try to put together. 01:29:37.490 --> 01:29:43.790 He's speaking about what has become known as the Nazarene Acts of the Apostles. 01:29:44.330 --> 01:29:46.930 Or the Pseudo-Clementine Recognitions. 01:29:47.090 --> 01:29:48.810 This is the book that we're going to be reading. 01:29:48.810 --> 01:29:53.870 But he admits here that this is actually an Ebionite document. 01:29:55.170 --> 01:30:01.530 And in fact, in the Recognitions of Clement in the Nazarene Acts, it in itself 01:30:01.530 --> 01:30:05.070 says that it's written by Clement. 01:30:05.290 --> 01:30:07.410 And that Clement was sending this information. 01:30:07.570 --> 01:30:10.090 He was sending his writings to James. 01:30:10.790 --> 01:30:17.090 So, we have within the Nazarene Acts of the Apostles, Clement tells us that he's 01:30:17.090 --> 01:30:18.030 sending it to James. 01:30:18.030 --> 01:30:20.650 And that James is associated with the Ebionites. 01:30:21.290 --> 01:30:26.990 And then, a couple hundred years later, when Epiphanius was writing about this, 01:30:27.070 --> 01:30:28.950 he mentions that they have this book. 01:30:30.130 --> 01:30:35.470 So, you can see how the whole series of possession goes. 01:30:35.610 --> 01:30:39.830 From Clement, sent to James, from James to the Ebionites, and now it's being 01:30:39.830 --> 01:30:41.090 mentioned by Epiphanius. 01:30:43.110 --> 01:30:50.790 He says, Nor are they ashamed to accuse Paul here with certain fabrications of 01:30:50.790 --> 01:30:53.450 their false apostles' villainy and imposture. 01:30:53.730 --> 01:30:58.510 They say he was a Tarsian, which he admits himself and does not deny, and they 01:30:58.510 --> 01:31:03.150 suppose that he was of Greek parentage, taking the occasion for this from the same 01:31:03.150 --> 01:31:08.110 passage because of his frank statement, I am a man of Tarsus, a citizen in no mean 01:31:08.110 --> 01:31:08.510 city. 01:31:10.090 --> 01:31:13.830 They then claim that he was a Greek and a son of a Greek mother and Greek father, 01:31:14.390 --> 01:31:18.950 and that he went up to Jerusalem and stayed there for a while, desired to marry 01:31:18.950 --> 01:31:22.590 a daughter of the high priest, and had therefore become a proselytite and 01:31:22.590 --> 01:31:23.450 been circumcised. 01:31:23.730 --> 01:31:28.350 But since he still could not marry that sort of girl, he became angry and wrote 01:31:28.350 --> 01:31:31.410 against circumcision and against the Sabbath and the legislation. 01:31:31.410 --> 01:31:38.210 So, this in itself is probably, to most of you, a very controversial 01:31:38.210 --> 01:31:39.770 statement. 01:31:41.130 --> 01:31:45.830 And this is something that I hope to get into somewhat throughout this study. 01:31:47.810 --> 01:31:55.030 There are many people out there on YouTube and Facebook that spend a lot of time 01:31:55.030 --> 01:31:58.370 bashing Paul and calling him a false apostle. 01:32:00.550 --> 01:32:06.010 And the majority of what they say is really nothing other than slander. 01:32:08.770 --> 01:32:11.130 I'm personally not interested in slander. 01:32:11.290 --> 01:32:21.710 I'm not interested in, you know, just going out vindictively to destroy 01:32:21.710 --> 01:32:22.730 Paul's reputation. 01:32:23.830 --> 01:32:30.390 That being said, if Paul is a false apostle, do we not need to know that? 01:32:32.850 --> 01:32:34.030 And that's the key. 01:32:34.330 --> 01:32:36.050 You know, most people don't even want to look at it. 01:32:36.110 --> 01:32:39.250 They don't want to think about the fact that Paul might be a false apostle. 01:32:39.650 --> 01:32:40.830 But how would we know? 01:32:41.530 --> 01:32:47.690 Well, I would say that the best way to know would be to know what do the original 01:32:47.690 --> 01:32:49.370 apostles feel about Paul. 01:32:50.830 --> 01:32:57.330 In the book of Acts, we're given the impression that things were favorable 01:32:57.330 --> 01:33:00.230 between himself and the other apostles, including James. 01:33:01.230 --> 01:33:07.350 However, if you look at Paul's epistles, you begin to think that maybe there was a 01:33:07.350 --> 01:33:08.310 different story there. 01:33:10.610 --> 01:33:14.070 Personally, after coming to this information about the Abianites and 01:33:14.070 --> 01:33:18.390 studying it, and studying a number of different historical documents, 01:33:18.790 --> 01:33:23.710 what I believe happened was, I believe that initially, Paul was part of their 01:33:23.710 --> 01:33:24.050 movement. 01:33:24.470 --> 01:33:28.930 That at first, when he first had his conversion, they accepted him. 01:33:29.530 --> 01:33:34.010 They believed that he was teaching the same doctrine that they were. 01:33:34.010 --> 01:33:41.150 But over time, I think that either Paul changed his doctrine, or possibly they got 01:33:41.150 --> 01:33:44.770 to know a little bit more about Paul, and realized he was teaching something 01:33:44.770 --> 01:33:46.090 contrary to what they were. 01:33:47.050 --> 01:33:49.890 And I'll let you make your decision yourself about that. 01:33:50.090 --> 01:33:54.330 I do think, though, if there is a possibility that Paul was a false apostle, 01:33:54.830 --> 01:33:57.250 you owe it to yourself to study that out. 01:33:58.170 --> 01:34:05.130 Now, Paul is not mentioned in the recognitions of Clement by name. 01:34:05.630 --> 01:34:07.050 He does appear in there. 01:34:07.550 --> 01:34:09.110 He's not mentioned by name. 01:34:10.150 --> 01:34:20.450 But, the recognitions of Clement gives you another version of the incident where 01:34:20.450 --> 01:34:22.430 there was a riot started in the temple. 01:34:22.430 --> 01:34:27.310 And in the book of Acts, it ends with the stoning of Stephen. 01:34:27.830 --> 01:34:33.810 And immediately afterwards, Paul is sent with letters after the assembly to chase 01:34:33.810 --> 01:34:35.150 them down in Damascus. 01:34:35.650 --> 01:34:40.630 In the Nazarene Acts of the Apostles, you have the same story, only more 01:34:40.630 --> 01:34:41.190 detailed. 01:34:41.190 --> 01:34:48.690 And instead of attacking and stoning Stephen, there is an injury done to James 01:34:48.690 --> 01:34:52.730 by this unnamed person, who is clearly Paul. 01:34:54.190 --> 01:34:59.230 Based upon the comparison between the story in Acts and the story in the 01:34:59.230 --> 01:35:00.090 Nazarene Acts. 01:35:00.370 --> 01:35:03.290 It's obviously Paul that attacks James. 01:35:04.210 --> 01:35:10.770 And immediately after that, this unnamed person is sent with letters to pursue the 01:35:10.770 --> 01:35:12.630 Apostles to Damascus. 01:35:12.750 --> 01:35:14.970 Again, perfectly fits Paul. 01:35:15.350 --> 01:35:16.750 So, we know that it is Paul. 01:35:17.570 --> 01:35:24.070 In fact, if you were to go and buy this book, it will probably tell you in the 01:35:24.070 --> 01:35:26.690 footnotes that the unnamed person is Paul. 01:35:28.810 --> 01:35:34.690 So, Paul appears in the Nazarene Acts, but he is never mentioned by name. 01:35:35.230 --> 01:35:40.150 But a lot of the doctrines that Peter argues against in the Nazarene Acts of the 01:35:40.150 --> 01:35:42.090 Apostles are clearly Pauline doctrine. 01:35:44.090 --> 01:35:50.370 So, before you shut this off and say, I'm not going to listen to this because I 01:35:50.370 --> 01:35:51.010 like Paul. 01:35:52.110 --> 01:35:58.310 Again, I ask you to please think about it and ask yourself, if Paul was false, 01:35:58.910 --> 01:36:02.150 do I have a duty to study that out for myself? 01:36:03.010 --> 01:36:04.510 I'm not here to bash Paul. 01:36:04.590 --> 01:36:09.410 I'm not here to try and come up with different ways to slander him and 01:36:09.410 --> 01:36:12.050 different unfounded arguments. 01:36:12.050 --> 01:36:18.890 However, I really feel like the remedy for the argument is not to debate it 01:36:18.890 --> 01:36:23.650 endlessly, but to honestly go back and study history and to look at what the 01:36:23.650 --> 01:36:24.670 other Apostles said. 01:36:24.770 --> 01:36:26.890 What literature do we have from there? 01:36:27.310 --> 01:36:29.450 What references do we have from historians? 01:36:31.950 --> 01:36:40.230 And then use all the evidence to form your conclusion, not just based upon slander 01:36:40.230 --> 01:36:41.450 and opinions. 01:36:41.450 --> 01:36:47.310 And honestly, if you really want to study it out, I think you can come to a pretty 01:36:47.310 --> 01:36:51.610 good picture of what's going on in the New Testament between Paul and the other 01:36:51.610 --> 01:36:52.190 Apostles. 01:36:53.790 --> 01:36:57.990 So, one final slide before we get into the Nazarene Acts. 01:36:58.910 --> 01:37:05.410 Epiphanius says that he, being an Ebion, this fictitional founder of the Ebionites, 01:37:05.730 --> 01:37:09.990 that he is making a completely false accusation that accusation is against 01:37:09.990 --> 01:37:10.290 Paul. 01:37:10.290 --> 01:37:15.410 This horrid serpent with his poverty of understanding, for Ebion translated from 01:37:15.410 --> 01:37:16.750 Hebrew to Greek means poor. 01:37:17.610 --> 01:37:21.490 For truly he is poor in understanding, hope, and actuality, since he regards 01:37:21.490 --> 01:37:25.510 Christ as a mere man, and thus has come to hope with him in the poverty of faith. 01:37:26.010 --> 01:37:30.030 They themselves, if you please boastful, claim they are poor, because they sold 01:37:30.030 --> 01:37:33.250 their possession in the Apostles' time and laid them at the Apostles' feet, 01:37:33.650 --> 01:37:38.830 and went over to a life of poverty and renunciation, and thus they say they are 01:37:38.830 --> 01:37:39.990 called poor by everyone. 01:37:40.870 --> 01:37:46.690 So, again you see that Epiphanius is making sure that he is constantly bashing 01:37:46.690 --> 01:37:47.970 Ebion and the Ebionites. 01:37:48.310 --> 01:37:57.730 However, he admits pretty openly here that the Ebionites themselves claim, 01:37:57.830 --> 01:38:01.710 in his word, that they are poor because they sold their possessions to the 01:38:01.710 --> 01:38:02.630 original Apostles. 01:38:03.630 --> 01:38:08.810 So again, there is no proof, there is no evidence anywhere, aside from what 01:38:08.810 --> 01:38:12.410 Epiphanius is saying, that there was ever this person named Ebion. 01:38:13.090 --> 01:38:13.550 Ever. 01:38:14.190 --> 01:38:18.430 But even in the Epistle of James, you see him associating himself with the 01:38:18.430 --> 01:38:20.210 poor, with the Ebionites. 01:38:20.410 --> 01:38:24.730 And you hear Paul is told to make sure he remembers the Ebionites. 01:38:25.650 --> 01:38:31.270 So, we got these references to the poor in the New Testament. 01:38:32.390 --> 01:38:37.710 And the Ebionites themselves are telling Epiphanius, he is having some sort of a 01:38:37.710 --> 01:38:42.910 communication with Ebionites, and they are telling him that no, we were not founded 01:38:42.910 --> 01:38:45.150 by Ebion, we were founded by the Apostles. 01:38:45.610 --> 01:38:49.310 And that is why we are called Ebionites, not because of Ebion, some guy named 01:38:49.310 --> 01:38:49.690 Ebion. 01:38:50.330 --> 01:38:53.230 So, that is what we have from Epiphanius. 01:38:53.230 --> 01:38:59.590 You can also find information on them from Hippolytus, and Eusebius, and other 01:38:59.590 --> 01:39:00.970 heresiologists. 01:39:01.270 --> 01:39:06.610 Just keep in mind, whatever you read about them, you have got Catholic, Christian, 01:39:06.870 --> 01:39:10.990 the official church is not going to have anything favorable to say about the 01:39:10.990 --> 01:39:14.650 Ebionites, or the Nazarenes, or any of the original followers of Yeshua. 01:39:15.370 --> 01:39:17.570 Because they have got an agenda to protect. 01:39:18.890 --> 01:39:21.470 Alright, so, Hidden Truth. 01:39:21.810 --> 01:39:25.010 This is in the Recognitions of Clement. 01:39:25.630 --> 01:39:27.890 It tells the story of Clement meeting Peter. 01:39:28.850 --> 01:39:31.830 It contains authentic teachings of Simon Peter. 01:39:33.050 --> 01:39:37.150 It also contains authentic letters between James, Peter, and Clement. 01:39:39.390 --> 01:39:44.510 Peter is portrayed as debating Simon Magus, and I will let you be the judge of 01:39:44.510 --> 01:39:46.730 this, but I think he was actually debating Paul. 01:39:46.730 --> 01:39:52.570 Because a lot of the doctrines of Simon Magus seem to be very Pauline. 01:39:55.430 --> 01:39:57.930 It contains lost Ebionite doctrines. 01:39:58.170 --> 01:40:02.770 Some of these lost doctrines that you hear mentioned by people like Epiphanius, 01:40:02.910 --> 01:40:07.650 there is a belief called the Primal Atom Doctrine. 01:40:08.890 --> 01:40:15.830 Which basically is that Yeshua was going to be like a second atom. 01:40:16.510 --> 01:40:20.570 And of course you see that mentioned and alluded to in the New Testament a couple 01:40:20.570 --> 01:40:21.050 of times. 01:40:22.370 --> 01:40:25.910 And that is what is meant by the Son of Adam, or the Son of Man. 01:40:26.510 --> 01:40:30.170 Is that he was a type and shadow of like a repeat of Adam. 01:40:31.550 --> 01:40:36.890 He was sent to restore what Adam had destroyed. 01:40:37.730 --> 01:40:41.530 There is also a doctrine known as the Standing One, or the Standing Man 01:40:41.530 --> 01:40:41.990 Doctrine. 01:40:41.990 --> 01:40:45.930 Where Messiah, one of the titles for Messiah is the Standing Man. 01:40:46.470 --> 01:40:51.510 And when you see a character, you see this in the New Testament, you even see it back 01:40:51.510 --> 01:40:52.410 in the Torah. 01:40:52.970 --> 01:40:57.970 That when someone is said that they stand up, or they straighten themselves up. 01:40:58.070 --> 01:41:02.070 That what they are doing is they are essentially doing some sort of act of 01:41:02.070 --> 01:41:02.650 righteousness. 01:41:04.950 --> 01:41:07.810 Righteousness or restoration or redemption. 01:41:08.770 --> 01:41:11.210 And so this is what you would expect from the Messiah. 01:41:11.210 --> 01:41:16.830 You expect him to be, by standing up, he is there to restore righteousness and 01:41:16.830 --> 01:41:17.330 justice. 01:41:18.210 --> 01:41:23.970 Now this Ebionite Doctrine, they are all contained within the Nazarene Acts of the 01:41:23.970 --> 01:41:24.490 Apostles. 01:41:24.650 --> 01:41:29.470 Which is proof that it is a genuine document. 01:41:29.650 --> 01:41:32.450 It is not something that was written in the 300's or 400's. 01:41:32.450 --> 01:41:37.650 Or in the medieval time, like some people say. 01:41:37.970 --> 01:41:42.250 But it was actually written right after the destruction of Jerusalem. 01:41:45.050 --> 01:41:48.050 And some of the story line is likely fictional. 01:41:48.870 --> 01:41:54.210 I think somebody took the teachings of Peter and took the letters of Clement. 01:41:54.970 --> 01:41:59.990 And put them together and then added a bit of a story line to it. 01:42:00.330 --> 01:42:01.670 Especially later in the book. 01:42:03.090 --> 01:42:05.330 To basically turn it into a novel. 01:42:06.150 --> 01:42:10.870 But because they did that, they were able to preserve these teachings that we have 01:42:10.870 --> 01:42:11.570 from Peter. 01:42:12.130 --> 01:42:15.670 And I really think that if they had not put this into the novel form. 01:42:15.750 --> 01:42:21.050 And had not added the story line to it to make it sound like some kind of romantic 01:42:21.050 --> 01:42:22.690 novel. 01:42:23.690 --> 01:42:27.630 Then we probably wouldn't have this work today. 01:42:27.630 --> 01:42:32.210 But because they did that, they were able to preserve and protect the teachings of 01:42:32.210 --> 01:42:32.470 Peter. 01:42:34.010 --> 01:42:40.110 If you want to get a copy of this document, you can go to the web address at 01:42:40.110 --> 01:42:41.090 the top of your screen. 01:42:43.170 --> through and refer back to. 01:43:27.270 --> 01:43:31.290 This book is going to bless you tremendously if you will actually take the 01:43:31.290 --> 01:43:32.070 time to read it. 01:43:33.190 --> 01:43:35.230 It has so much information in it. 01:43:35.510 --> 01:43:40.310 It answers so many questions about what Yeshua taught and what Peter taught and 01:43:40.310 --> 01:43:41.430 what the apostles believed. 01:43:42.410 --> 01:43:46.710 I highly, highly, highly recommend getting a print copy of this. 01:43:46.710 --> 01:43:52.130 But, like I said, the PDF version is there for free. I put up, I am just going to start from 01:44:03.650 --> 01:44:04.510 chapter 1. 01:44:05.070 --> 01:44:08.890 And we will make our way through the book and we will take it one chapter at a time. 01:44:09.990 --> 01:44:12.210 A chapter in this book is just a paragraph. 01:44:12.210 --> 01:44:18.490 So we will go paragraph after paragraph and we will read it and see what sticks 01:44:18.490 --> 01:44:19.510 out in the reading. 01:44:20.050 --> 01:44:23.690 And if you get yourself a copy of the PDF, you can read along too. 01:44:24.270 --> 01:44:27.830 So, thank you for listening and I hope you choose to continue. 01:44:28.210 --> 01:44:28.610 Shalom.
